Washington Nationals Win 1st World Series Title

“What a story,” said Ryan Zimmerman, the only player who’s been a part of every Nationals team.

HOUSTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg paraded the MVP trophy for delirious fans packed behind the dugout. Max Scherzer tearfully hugged his teammates. Gerardo Parra did the Baby Shark chop, Sean Doolittle flapped snow angels next to the mound.

Almost out of contention in May, champs in October.

Howie Kendrick, Anthony Rendon and the Washington Nationals completed their amazing comeback journey — fittingly with one last late rally on the road.

In Game 7 of the World Series, no less.

Kendrick and Rendon homered in the seventh inning as the Nationals overcame a two-run deficit, rocking the Houston Astros 6-2 Wednesday night to win the first title in franchise history.

With all eyes on Scherzer and his remarkable recovery after a painkilling injection, these Nationals truly embraced their shot in the only Series when the road team won every game.

Even more against the odds: Juan Soto and Washington came from behind to win five elimination games this postseason, an unprecedented feat.

“What a story,” said Ryan Zimmerman, the only player who’s been a part of every Nationals team.

“The way this game went is the way our whole season went.”

Strasburg, new lefty Patrick Corbin and the Nats brought the first World Series championship to the nation’s capital since ol’ Walter Johnson delivered the crown for the Senators in 1924.

This franchise started out as the Montreal Expos in 1969 when the major leagues expanded beyond the border, putting a team with tricolor caps at jaunty Jarry Park. They moved to D.C. in 2005, ending Washington’s three-decade-plus wait for big league baseball after the Senators skipped town to become the Texas Rangers.

But the incredible path these wild-card Nationals with the curly W logo took, well, no one could have imagined.

Because in one topsy-turvy week, they put aside the pain of past playoff failures and upended heavily favored Houston. Quite an ending to a season that began back in February with the Nationals and Astros working out side-by-side at the spring training complex they share in Florida.

“Resilient, relentless bunch of guys,” manager Dave Martinez said. “They fought all year long.”

Having lost star slugger Bryce Harper in free agency and beset by bullpen woes, Washington plummeted to 19-31 in late May. It got so bad there was talk the Nationals might fire Martinez and trade away Scherzer.

Instead, they stuck with the mantra that sprung up on T-shirts — Stay In The Fight.

“That was our motto,” Scherzer said.

And months later they finished it, indeed.

Shut out on one hit by Zack Greinke going into the seventh, they still found a way to win.

“Guess what? We stayed in the fight. We won the fight!” Martinez shouted during the trophy celebration on the field.

“We were down and out. We were 19-31. We didn’t quit then, we weren’t going to quit now,” he said.

Strasburg earned the World Series MVP award with a pair of wins, including Game 6.

“It’s almost like we’ve done it so many times that we have to get punched in the face to kind of wake up,” he said.

As pitcher Aníbal Sánchez told Scherzer while hugging him in the middle of the diamond: “We won one. We finally won one.”

For the 43,326 revved-up fans at Minute Maid Park, it was a combination of shock and disappointment. So close to seeing José Altuve, Alex Bregman, George Springer and their Astros add to the title they won in Game 7 at Dodger Stadium two years ago, they watched this chance suddenly vanish.

“I’ve got a group of heartbroken men in there that did everything they could to try to bring a World Series championship to this city. And we fell one win shy,” Astros manager AJ Hinch said.

“Let’s be honest, there’s 28 other teams that would love to have our misery today,” he said. “And I just told our team, it’s hard to put into words and remember all the good that happened because right now we feel as bad as you can possibly feel,” he added.

President Donald Trump, greeted with chants of “Lock him up!” when he attended Game 5 in Washington, tweeted his congratulations to the Nationals from the White House.

“Game 7 was amazing!” Trump tweeted.

Washington kept pulling away after taking the lead, with the sensational Soto hitting an RBI single in the eighth and Adam Eaton adding a two-run single in the ninth off rookie José Urquidy.

Acquired from Arizona at the July trade deadline, Greinke was in complete control until Rendon — a Houston prep and college star — hit a solo homer with one out in the seventh that trimmed it to 2-1.

“Just gave us a little bit of hope,” Nationals leadoff man Trea Turner said.

When Soto followed with a one-out walk, Hinch decided to make a move. He’d had ace starter Gerrit Cole warming up earlier, but left him in the bullpen.

“I wasn’t going to pitch him unless we were going to win the World Series and have a lead,” Hinch said. “He was going to close the game in the ninth.”

Instead, Hinch signaled for reliable reliever Will Harris.

Kendrick connected on the second pitch, slicing a drive that hit the screen attached to the right field foul pole for a 3-2 lead. Just like that, everything had changed for the team in orange that led the majors with 107 regular-season wins, and the ballpark fell silent.

For Kendrick, another timely blow. At 36, playing on the oldest team in the majors, he was the NL Championship Series MVP against St. Louis after hitting the winning grand slam in the 10th inning of the deciding Game 5 in the Division Series at Dodger Stadium.

Then again, this was nothing new for the Nationals.

Washington rallied in the eighth to beat Milwaukee in the wild-card game and took the last two to beat Los Angeles in the NLDS, setting up a sweep of the Cardinals in the NLCS.

“This is now the most 2019 Nats thing to ever happen,” Doolittle said. “Another elimination game, another come-from-behind win.”

Far away, a sizable crowd poured into Nationals Park for a watch party. That was the stadium where Houston hammered the Nats for three games last weekend in taking a 3-2 edge, but their luck changed in Texas.

They won the last two against a team that posted the best home record in the majors (60-21) over the last two decades. Houston earned home-field advantage throughout the postseason, but it didn’t help in the end as the Astros went a stunning 0-4 in their own ballpark during the Series.

Martinez said Soto, who turned 21 last week, celebrated with his first beer. Meanwhile, the skipper, who had a heart procedure six weeks ago and can’t resume his six-cups-a-day coffee habit, headed back to the clubhouse for a special treat.

“I am,” he said, “going to smoke a cigar.”

With Greinke and Scherzer grunting on every pitch, Game 7 started as a classic duel.

Yuli Gurriel put the Astros ahead with a home run in the second and Carlos Correa added an RBI single off Scherzer that made it 2-0 in the fifth.

Scherzer was done after the fifth. Only a few days earlier, the three-time Cy Young Award winner had been unable to lift his right arm due to nerve irritation near his neck.

Corbin, the $140 million starter, threw three scoreless innings in relief.

Daniel Hudson, released by the Angels in March, closed for the Nationals, who made Houston pay for stranding so many runners all game. Hudson struck out Michael Brantley for the last out, then threw his glove to start the celebration.

The Astros breezed to the AL West title, edged Tampa Bay in a five-game ALDS and topped the Yankees in the ALCS. They had a front-office fiasco in October, which led to the firing of an executive for a boorish rant at female reporters during a clubhouse celebration.

“Yeah, the ultimate goal is to win the World Series, and we fell short to a great team. You can’t hang your head low about that,” Springer said. “You move on and start getting ready for spring training.”

GOING WILD

The Nationals became the first wild-card team to win the Series since Madison Bumgarner and the Giants in 2014. The last six champs have clinched on the road.

UP NEXT

The Astros and Nationals open exhibition play with a World Series rematch on Feb. 22 at Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. They met in their Grapefruit League opener this year and Scherzer gave up a home run to the first batter of the game.

Washington, D.C. – (Wednesday, October 30, 2019) – Howard University students will be fanning out across the District of Columbia  this weekend to help DC Fire and EMS to install dozens of fire and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in the homes of at-risk families.  It is all part of an effort to raise awareness about fire and CO safety in the community and on campus.

Howard is the only HBCU to participate in the 3rd Annual Town/Gown Fire Safety Community Service Project. The partnership between Howard University, DC Fire and EMS, First Alert, Campus Firewatch and the Michael H. Minger Foundation will result in 100 families in the District’s Wards 1, 7, and 8 receiving the free alarms, donated by First Alert.

It is estimated that on any given day in the United States a Fire Department responds to a five every 24 seconds and 3 out of every 5 home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no working smoke alarms.

“We are excited to be a part of the Town/Gown Project. This is a great opportunity to further educate our community and Howard University students about the importance of fire and CO safety, and equip many homes with needed alarms,” said Valarie G. Turner, Ph.D., director of Off-Campus Housing and Community Engagement at Howard University.  “Our goal is to assist and educate students, the elderly and families throughout the D.C. community to help reduce the risk of fatal fires. This helps make the community stronger and safer for everyone.”

‘Friday’ Actor-Comedian John Witherspoon Dies At 77

“Life won’t be as funny without him,” Ice Cube said in a Twitter post late Tuesday, adding that he was devastated by news of Witherspoon’s death.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor-comedian John Witherspoon, who memorably played Ice Cube’s father in the “Friday” films, has died. He was 77.

Witherspoon’s manager Alex Goodman confirmed late Tuesday that Witherspoon died in Los Angeles. No cause of death was released.

The actor had a prolific career, co-starring in three “Friday” films, appearing on “The Wayans Bros.” television series and voicing the grandfather in “The Boondocks” animated series. His film roles included “Vampire in Brooklyn” and “Boomerang,” and he was a frequent guest on “Late Show with David Letterman.”

For many his most recognizable role was “Pops,” Ice Cube’s father in the stoner comedy “Friday” and its two sequels, a crude but affectionate father trying to guide his son to be better.

“Life won’t be as funny without him,” Ice Cube said in a Twitter post late Tuesday, adding that he was devastated by news of Witherspoon’s death.

Regina King, who appeared as Witherspoon’s daughter in “Friday” and also voiced both of his grandsons in the animated series “The Boondocks” called him her “comedic inspiration” on Twitter.

Goodman referred to a family statement issued to the website Deadline that said the family was in shock over Witherspoon’s death.

The statement says Witherspoon, who was born on Jan. 27, 1942, is survived by his wife, Angela, and sons JD and Alexander.

JD Witherspoon tweeted that he was happy for all the great times he and his dad had together.

“We’d roast each other like homies more than Father & Son, and I really liked that. He was my best friend & my idol,” JD Witherspoon posted. “Love U Dad…I’ll miss u.”

A Register Sex Offender Kidnaps Two Children From A DC School

The schools’ aftercare program at Rocketship Rise Academy is operated by Springboard Education. That is the same company DC Public Schools terminated this year after a sexual abuse incident at Capitol Hill Montessori School in Logan Circle this summer.

It is shocking to most that hear the story. On October 11th a man followed a woman into Rocketship Rise Academy in Southeast. The woman was getting her child from the school’s aftercare area. The man reportedly walked up to a boy and started playing with him. He did so for about 15 minutes before convincing the boy and his brother to leave with him.

A resource officer feeling that something was not right followed the man. The man was later identified as 30-year-old Antonio Burnside of Southeast. When questioned Burnside claimed that he was the father of the boys and continued to walk out of the school.

The resource officer separated the children from Burnside and detained him for police. The children were not injured.

Court documents show Burnside was involved in another attempted child abduction in 2018. The chargers were later downgraded to sexual abuse of a minor in a plea deal.

The other big shocker was the fact that parents say they were not notified until some two weeks later. Officials at Rocketship say they are grateful that a front office staffer was able to prevent the abduction of two students from their aftercare program. As a result, they are reviewing and stepping up their security procedures to include all guests will have to show ID at all times if they wish to enter the building, even when school is not in session.

The schools’ aftercare program at Rocketship Rise Academy is operated by Springboard Education. That is the same company DC Public Schools terminated this year after a sexual abuse incident at Capitol Hill Montessori School in Logan Circle this summer.

The Deputy Mayor for Education has launched an investigation into the incident at Rocketship. A statement from the office reads, “The safety and well being of all students across DC public and public charter schools is our priority. With the incident at Rocketship, we are extremely relieved that no children where physically harmed. We are currently investigating the incident and continue to work with the school and the Public Charter School Board to review and ensure strong policies are in place for student safety, and to ensure consistent and timely communication with families and school communities.”

The suspect Burnside remains in jail until his next hearing. That date has not been set.

Eddie Murphy Ready To Say No To Movies And Do Stand Up Only

Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy is giving up movies in pursuit of more family-time and his passion of only doing stand up comedy.

Contributed by Nadira Jamerson

In an interview for his feature in WSJ. Magazine‘s 2019 Entertainment Innovator of the Year, Eddie Murphy announced that he was thinking of giving up movies completely to only focus on continuing his stand up comedy career.

Murphy said, “Once I get back onstage, I kind of feel like that’s what I was born to do more than anything. When I get back on the stage, I can’t imagine wanting to do movies again.”

Murphy continued to explain that acting in movies has always been difficult for him because it has kept him from his large family of 10 children.

“What I like to do more than anything is just be home with my family, chilling,” Murphy said. “It’s really easy to feel like you’re working when you make a movie. You’ve got to get up at five, six in the morning. I started making movies when I was 20 years old, when I made 48 Hrs. That’s f—ing 38 years. You’ve been on a movie set, you see how this sh– is. It’s not a fun process.”

Murphy also expressed excitement for his upcoming Netflix special, which he believes will give him the opportunity to be back on the comedy stage where belongs. Being older and after raising 10 children, Murphy says that fans should not expect his routines to be the same as they were in the past. However, his goal remains to still be funny in as many ways as possible.

“Last time I did stand-up I was 27 years old. I look at some of my old stuff and cringe. Sometimes I’m like, I can’t believe I said that! I’m 58 now so I don’t think I’m gonna approach it the same way,” he said.

If you are a long-time Eddie Murphy fan, make sure to stay on the lookout for his new show!

Virginia Officials Issue Warning As Wildfire Season Approaches

Wildfire season has begun in Virginia. Residents are advised to take extra precautions to prevent tragedy.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced that wildfire season has begun in the state and will last through November 30.

Virginia’s dry weather conditions, high temperatures and low rainfall this year put it at an increased risk for wildfire. Fires are also at risk to spread faster and be more difficult to contain says the Virginia Department of Forestry.

The Department of Forestry also states that most wildfires in Virginia are caused by human activity. Residents should take extra precautions to prevent the spread of fires, including:

  • Check the weather conditions before you start to burn
  • Have a water source at the ready
  • Have tools like a shovel or rake on hand
  • Keep the burn pile small
  • Clear the burn spot and surrounding areas down to mineral soil

Some places have initiated burn bans. Virginia residents should check with their local law enforcement before having an outdoor fire.

John Conyers, Longest Serving Black Congressman, Dies At 90

Throughout his career, Conyers used his influence to push civil rights. After a 15-year fight, he won passage of legislation declaring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s birthday a national holiday, first celebrated in 1986. He regularly introduced a bill starting in 1989 to study the harm caused by slavery and the possibility of reparations for slaves’ descendants. That bill never got past a House subcommittee.

DETROIT (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. John Conyers, one of the longest-serving members of Congress whose resolutely liberal stance on civil rights made him a political institution in Washington and back home in Detroit despite several scandals, has died. He was 90.

Conyers, among the high-profile politicians toppled by sex harassment allegations in 2017, died at his home on Sunday, said Detroit police spokesman Cpl. Dan Donakowski. The death “looks like natural causes,” Donakowski added.

Known as the dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, which he helped found, Conyers became one of only six black House members when he won his first election by just 108 votes in 1964. The race was the beginning of more than 50 years of election dominance: Conyers regularly won elections with more than 80% of the vote, even after his wife went to prison for taking a bribe.

That voter loyalty helped Conyers freely speak his mind. He took aim at both Republicans and fellow Democrats: He said then-President George W. Bush “has been an absolute disaster for the African-American community” in 2004, and in 1979 called then-President Jimmy Carter “a hopeless, demented, honest, well-intentioned nerd who will never get past his first administration.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Sunday that without Conyers there would be no King holiday — “no doubt about that.”

“He was one of the most consequential congressmen,” Jackson said.

His district office in Detroit employed civil rights legend Rosa Parks from 1965 until her retirement in 1988. In 2005, Conyers was among 11 people inducted to the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame.

But after a nearly 53-year career, he became the first Capitol Hill politician to lose his job in the torrent of sexual misconduct allegations sweeping through the nation’s workplaces. A former staffer alleged she was fired because she rejected his sexual advances, and others said they’d witnessed Conyers inappropriately touching female staffers or requesting sexual favors.

He denied the allegations but eventually stepped down, citing health reasons.

“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we’re going through now,” Conyers told a Detroit radio station from a hospital where he’d been taken after complaining of lightheadedness in December 2017. “This, too, shall pass. My legacy will continue through my children.”

Conyers was born and grew up in Detroit, where his father, John Conyers Sr., was a union organizer in the automotive industry and an international representative with the United Auto Workers union. He insisted that his son, a jazz aficionado from an early age, not become a musician.

The younger Conyers heeded the advice, but jazz remained, he said, one of his “great pleasures.” He sponsored legislation to forgive the $1.6 million tax debt of band leader Woody Herman’s estate and once kept a standup bass in his Washington office.

Before heading to Washington, Conyers served in the National Guard and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War supervising repairs of military aircraft. He earned his bachelor’s and law degrees from Wayne State University in the late 1950s.

His political aspirations were honed while working as a legislative assistant from 1958 to 1961 to U.S. Rep. John Dingell, a fellow Michigan Democrat who, when he retired in 2014 at age 88, was Congress’ longest-serving member. That mantle then was passed onto Conyers.

Dingell died in February.

Soon after being elected to Congress, Conyers’ leadership at home — in the segregated streets of Detroit — would be tested. Parts of the city were burned during riots in July 1967 that were sparked by hostilities between black residents and Detroit’s mostly white police force, and by the cramped living conditions in black neighborhoods.

Conyers climbed onto a flatbed truck and appealed to black residents to return to their homes, but he was shouted down. His district office was gutted by fire the next day. But the plight of the nation’s inner cities would remain his cause.

“In Detroit you’ve got high unemployment, a poverty rate of at least 30%, schools not in great shape, high illiteracy, poor families not safe from crime, without health insurance, problems with housing,” he told The Associated Press in 2004. “You can’t fix one problem by itself — they’re all connected.”

He was fiercely opposed to Detroit’s finances being taken over by a state-appointed emergency manager as the city declared bankruptcy in 2013. Conyers, whose district included much of Detroit, sought a federal investigation and congressional hearings, arguing it was “difficult to identify a single instance” where such an arrangement, where local officials are stripped of most of their power, succeeds.

Conyers was the only House Judiciary Committee member to have sat in on two impeachment hearings: He supported a 1972 resolution recommending President Richard Nixon’s impeachment for his conduct of the Vietnam War, but when the House clashed in 1998 over articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, Conyers said: “Impeachment was designed to rid this nation of traitors and tyrants, not attempts to cover up an extramarital affair.”

Conyers also had scandals of his own.

In 2009, his wife Monica Conyers, a Detroit city councilwoman largely elected on the strength of her husband’s last name, pleaded guilty to bribery. The case was related to a sludge hauling contract voted on by the City Council, and she spent nearly two years in prison.

Three years earlier, the House ethics committee closed a three-year investigation of allegations that Conyers’ staff worked on political campaigns and was ordered to baby-sit for his two children and run his personal errands. He admitted to a “lack of clarity” with staffers and promised changes.

But he couldn’t survive the last scandal. An ethics committee launched a review after a former longtime staffer said Conyers’ office paid her more than $27,000 under a confidentiality agreement to settle a complaint in 2015. She alleged she was fired because she rejected his sexual advances, and other said they’d witnesses inappropriate behavior.

Conyers initially said he looked forward to vindicating himself and his family, but he announced his immediate retirement in December 2017 after fellow Democrats called for his resignation. The chorus included Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the House’s top Democrat.

Conyers became chairman of the House Judiciary Committee when Democrats regained the House majority in 2006. He oversaw 2007 hearings into the White House’s role in the firings of eight federal prosecutors and 2009 hearings on how the NFL dealt with head injuries to players.

Conyers frequently swam against the prevailing political currents during his time in Congress. He backed, for example, anti-terrorism legislation that was far less sweeping than a plan pushed by then-Attorney General John Ashcroft in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

He was also an early supporter in 2007 of then-Sen. Barack Obama, who was expected by some in the Congressional Black Caucus to push public health insurance, sharp funding increases for urban development and other initiatives long blocked by Republicans.

“We want him to stand strong,” Conyers said in 2009.

Conyers enjoyed his greatest support back home in Detroit — except when he tried to venture into local politics. Conyers took on 16-year incumbent Mayor Coleman A. Young in 1989, launching his bid with the statement: “Look out, Big Daddy, I’m home.” But a poorly organized campaign helped him finish a mere third in the primary. He ran again for mayor when Young retired in 1993, and lost again.

Along with his wife, Conyers is survived by two sons, John III and Carl.

The nation mourns another great civil rights leader and lawmaker. Michigan Democratic Congressman John Conyers has died. He passed away in his sleep at his home in Detroit. Conyers was 90. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Conyers was the only member of the Judiciary Committee that oversaw the impeachment inquiries of both presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. He was a vocal critic of the Iraq War and spoke out often against the Patriot Act. He called for President George W. Bush to be impeached for the anti-terrorism law, but dropped it because of lack of support by other Democrats. Conyers became chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in 2007.

He resigned in 2017 following allegations of sexual harassment, which he denied.

Barack Obama and Steph Curry Remind Young Men of Color, “You Matter”

President Obama continues the conversation saying, “If you are really confident about your financial situation, you’re probably not going to be wearing an 8-pound chain around your neck” and “If you’re very confident about your sexuality, you don’t have to have eight women around you twerking.”

Earlier this year marked the fifth anniversary of Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBK).

Stephen Curry, an ambassador for MBK, joined Obama in Oakland, Calif. to offer advice and encouragement to the young men. According to The Hill, Curry spoke on issues affecting young men and boys of color in the U.S., that included conversations around masculinity, self-confidence and law enforcement.

The MBK focuses on creating opportunities in the community for boys and young men of color where they are both welcomed and included. They stand by the belief “that every young person deserves the opportunity to achieve their dreams, regardless of their race, gender, or socioeconomic status” according to their website.

Diddy Changes His Name Again

Rapper and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has decided to change his name once again, this time legally.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

Diddy has been known to change his stage name a few times.  We’ve heard Puffy, Puff Daddy and P. Diddy make appearances over the decades.

The rapper who’s real name is Sean Combs filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday to change his middle name from John to Love.

However this name change is a throwback to something we’ve seen before. Back in 2017 Diddy went through another name change where he wanted everyone to call him Love or Brother Love.

https://twitter.com/Diddy/status/926915432556015616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E926915432556015616&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fpitchfork.com%2Fnews%2Fdiddy-changes-his-name-again%2F

He later revealed he was only joking about the name change and told fans to feel free to call him whatever they choose. “It was just part of one of my alter egos, and one of my alter egos is Love,” he said in an Instagram video. Now it appears he’s made that moniker official.

The Bad Boys Records founder has yet to comment on the name change.

All Clear Is Given At St. Elizabeth Hospital

The site was ordered to use bottled water for everything until the bacteria could be cleared from the system. After four weeks and a second round of treatment officials at the Department of Behavioral health say it is now safe to drink and use the water from the faucets at the site.

Good News the all-clear has been given for residents and staff members at St. Elizabeth Hospital regarding their water system. Test earlier came up positive for the deadly legionella and pseudomonas bacteria. This bacteria can cause Legionnaires disease or compromise a person who has a weak immune system.

“I am very pleased to learn that after the second round of chlorination of the water system at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, the water system has been successfully treated and all bacteria has been eliminated.”
