What You Should Know About Elder Abuse

We take a look at elder abuse, what you should know about it and what to look for if you suspect it.

We all know of an older person in our family or in our community that needs help to take care of themselves.  You may be a caretaker for one of them.  But what if you’ve hired someone to help and are concerned about the care?  Maybe there’s a family member who isn’t meeting the best expectations of care or trust. We take a look at elder abuse, what you should know about it and what to look for if you suspect it.

House Fails To Overturn Biden Student Loan Veto

The Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling on loan forgiveness later this week.

(Washington, DC) — House Republicans have failed to overturn President Biden’s veto of the Congressional Review Act. The Congressional Review Act would have ended Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, and it passed in the House and Senate earlier this year before Biden vetoed the resolution. On Wednesday, the House failed to get the majority vote needed to overturn the veto. Biden’s student debt relief plan now faces the Supreme Court, which is expected to make a ruling on loan forgiveness later this week.

The FTC filed suit Wednesday in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington.  The suit accuses Amazon of using “manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs known as dark patterns’ to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically-renewing Prime subscriptions.”

Missing Titanic Sub Has Less Than 40 Hours Of Oxygen Left

While a number of news outlets are reporting the Titanic tourist submarine that went missing over the weekend has 40 hours of oxygen left, at least one expert is saying that’s a very generous estimate.

While a number of news outlets are reporting the Titanic tourist submarine that went missing over the weekend has 40 hours of oxygen left, at least one expert is saying that’s a very generous estimate. Bobby Chacon, a former team diver with the FBI, says odds are the five people inside the sub don’t have anywhere near that long before their oxygen runs out. “Those calculations are estimates based on normal working conditions,” Chacon says.

“If a person is injured, or they’re stressed, or they’re panicking, their air consumption increases. So those numbers of available hours go down. So if people are injured on that vessel, if they’re panicked on that vessel, they’re going to use more oxygen or more air more quickly.”

The OceanGates sub, which takes tourists underwater to catch a glimpse of the world’s most famous shipwreck, went missing about one hour, 45 minutes after it launched on Sunday morning, authorities say. It had enough oxygen to last 96 hours when it left, officials say.

Conversation With Maryland Governor Wes Moore

The governor discusses public safety, education and other Maryland issues.

We sit down with Maryland Governor Wes Moore.  The state’s first Black governor has hit the ground running during his first six months.  He enjoys a 55 percent approval rating in a Gonzalez poll released this week.  But he’s also facing challenges.  The rising homicide and crime rates in Baltimore and the suburbs around DC.  The NAACP is raising questions about the poor performance of black students in public schools. We’re going to talk about all of those things and more with the governor.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore is outlining what he calls a new approach to public safety, which he says is his administration’s top priority. While unveiling the “Safe Summer Initiative” today in Annapolis, Moore said he inherited a surge in violent crime that carried over from former Governor Larry Hogan’s administration. He said Maryland has fallen behind other states in addressing the problem and he’s committed to preventing crime, not just reacting to it. He says his approach focuses on supporting law enforcement, building strong communities, keeping guns off the streets and coordinating efforts across all agencies of the government.

PRIDE Month, The LGBTQ+ Community and Education

Explaining PRIDE issues to your children.

June is PRIDE Month.  It’s time for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies to celebrate and advocate.  But this is also a time of conflict and debate over the impact these issues have on public education. The “Don’t Say Gay” law in Florida prohibits discussion about LGBTQ+ issues for third grade classes and below.  Just yesterday… a popular school superintendent in Riverside County California was fired after the school board banded a social studies textbook that discussed assassinated San Francisco Supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk in 1978.  Tonight we’re talking about this important issue.

The United States vs Donald J. Trump DOJ Indictment

(Washington, DC) — The Department of Justice says former President Trump stored classified information including U.S. nuclear programs and defense and weapons capabilities. The DOJ unsealed the federal indictment of Trump a day after he announced he would become the first former President to face federal charges. The indictment also details two incidents in 2021 when Trump showed classified documents to others at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The indictment also provides pictures of the dozens of boxes the classified documents were allegedly stored in. The DOJ says the boxes were stored in various locations at Mar-a-Lago including a ballroom, a bathroom, a shower, an office space, Trump’s bedroom and a storage room.

Black Florida Mother Of Four Fatally Shot By Neighbor Over Her Children Playing

According to Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods in a news conference Monday, a Florida mother was shot in front of her 9-year-old child by a neighbor.

OCALA, Fla.- – According to Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods in a news conference Monday, a Florida mother was shot in front of her 9-year-old child by a neighbor.

Ajike Owens, 35, went to the door of her white female neighbor to address that the woman took her child’s iPad, threw it at him, and cracked the screen.

Police respond to what was labeled as a trespassing call, they found the mother of four suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she died.

“I wish our shooter would have called us instead of taking actions into her own hands,” Woods said. “I wish Ms. Owens would have called us in the hopes we could have never gotten to the point at which we are here today.”

Civil Rights Attorney Benjamin Crump made it clear that the white woman yelled racial slurs at Owen’s children in a prior confrontation,  before shooting and killing their mother.

Attorney Anthony D. Thomas, the family’s attorney said, “We need an arrest.” Thomas continues, “Make no mistake about it. We do support our sheriff. But at the same time, we want him to do the job that he promised that he would do, and we want swift justice.”

The Sheriff did mention that since 2021, deputies responded to over half a dozen calls in regards to a feud. Although the shooter has been identified, no arrest has been made yet.
