Jimmy Kimmel Comes Out Swinging In Monologue That Tackles Will Smith’s Oscars Slap

Jimmy Kimmel addressed the elephant in the room several times during Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony.

Jimmy Kimmel addressed the elephant in the room several times during Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony.  The late-night talk show host opened his monologue with a joke about Will Smith’s Oscar slap from last year, saying, “Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage went way up,” joked Kimmel.

The host joked that Smith was allowed to take his best actor Oscar for King Richard last year after slapping Rock, the 2022 presenter, for best documentary feature.  “So we have strict policies in place. If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute-long speech,” said Kimmel.

As he exited the stage for the night, Jimmy passed a sign that read: “Number of Oscars telecast without incident,” He then flipped up a card with the numeral one on it.

Many would agree to disagree if this was funny versus an overkill on the jokes that so many have done over the time.

Oscars 2023: Angela Bassett’s Reaction To Losing Goes Viral

Of course, cinema’s biggest night set trends across social media on Sunday night (March 12).  One of the viral moments came after Angela Bassett lost Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Jamie Lee Curtis received the award after a long wait to hold a gold statuette.

As she celebrated, the camera panned to Bassett, who stared blankly. “Angela Bassett’s reaction was for real,” one fan wrote, tweeted: “This woman has given so much to all her films for the Oscars to rob her yet again?!?” “Don’t get me wrong, Jamie Lee Curtis has phenomenal work, but Angela’s Oscars is LONG overdue, and it’s upsetting to see her get played in the face,” another viewer tweeted.

“The emotion when she lost, she had a blank face. She is amazing. She was SNUBBED.”

Biden Will Not Veto DC Criminal Code Law

The overhaul passed the D.C. Council late last year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Thursday he would sign a Republican-sponsored resolution blocking new District of Columbia laws that overhaul how the nation’s capital prosecutes and punishes crime.

City officials have spent nearly two decades trying to redo Washington’s criminal laws, including redefining crimes, changing criminal justice policies and reworking how sentences should be handed down after convictions. The overhaul passed the D.C. Council late last year.

But the Republican-controlled House has decided to wade into city matters, claiming the district’s changes will contribute to already-rising crime in Washington — the number of murders in 2021 was the highest in nearly 20 years — and make it easier for some criminals to get out of prison or evade punishment all together.

The resolution passed the House with some Democratic support and appears poised to clear the Senate on a bipartisan basis as well, perhaps as early as next week.

The settlement relates to a lawsuit over deputies and firefighters sharing grisly photos of the NBA star, his 13-year-old daughter and other victims killed in a 2020 helicopter crash.

The figure includes a newly agreed upon payment from the county of $13.5 million along with the $15 million a federal jury awarded Bryant’s widow, Vanessa Bryant, at a trial in August.

Today marks the successful culmination of Mrs. Bryant’s courageous battle to hold accountable those who engaged in this grotesque conduct, Luis Li, Bryant family attorney, via statement. She fought for her husband, her daughter, and all those in the community whose deceased family were treated with similar disrespect, Luis Li, Bryant family attorney, via statement.

The attorney representing L.A. County referred to the settlement as “fair and reasonable.”. We hope Ms. Bryant and her children continue to heal from their loss, Mira Hashmall, attorney representing L.A. County, via statement.

The agreement also resolves any future claims by Bryant’s three surviving daughters.

National Park Service says cherry blossoms will likely peak at the Tidal Basin near the end of March.

Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, March 1, 2023) – The National Park Service is out with its prediction on when the cherry blossoms will likely peak at the Tidal Basin.  The time frame is March 22nd through March 25th.

The peak blossom is defined as the point when 70 percent of the blossoms have flowered.  District officials are already gearing up for the peak season.  Today,  Mayor Muriel Bowser, the National Cherry Blossom Festival, and the National Park Service kicked off DC’s cherry blossom season by welcoming the Cherry Blossom Bus. SCOTUS To Hear Arguments In Biden Loan Forgiveness Program

The program would cancel 10-thousand dollars in student loan debt for those earning less than 125-thousand dollars per year, and up to 20-thousand for those who received Pell Grants.

(Washington, DC)  —  The Supreme Court will hear arguments Tuesday on President Biden’s plan to forgive an estimated 400-billion dollars in student loan debt.
Biden’s plan has been blocked by several legal challenges, stopping the government from canceling debt for the 26 million borrowers who have applied for relief since the program was rolled out in August.  The program would cancel 10-thousand dollars in student loan debt for those earning less than 125-thousand dollars per year, and up to 20-thousand for those who received Pell Grants.  Those challenging the plan in court, including several Republican-led states, argue the move is an abuse of executive authority.

Helping Hands Radiothon Raises $106K

Washington, D.C. (Sunday, March 26, 2023) – Hundreds of Howard University students are preparing to make their way to communities in crisis around the country and abroad to render service.  Their efforts are made possible thanks to the more than $106,000 donated Sunday to the 2023 WHUR Helping Hands Radiothon.

The 12-hour radiothon, hosted at the studios of 96.3 WHUR, is part of an annual effort to help defray the costs of Howard students who forgo their traditional spring break to instead participate in the University’s Alternative Spring Break Program (ASB).  WHUR listeners stepped up in a big way Sunday showing their support by donating on-line at whur.com, dropping off cash and checks at the radio station, and placing donations in the bucket-brigade of students who were fanned out along Georgia Avenue and Bryant Street, NW.

“Given all that’s going on with our youth in communities across the country, I was just so moved by the stories the Howard University students were sharing,” said Jennifer Carson of SE, D.C.  Ms. Carson stopped by the station to make her donation after attending services at a nearby church.  “I thought about all the things these students could be doing and instead they want to help others.  I wanted to help them make that possible.”

More than 1,200  Howard students will be spending a week away in 25 U.S. cities and in Ghana from March 4th through March 11th to provide over 250,000 hours of community service. The students will be mentoring, tutoring, addressing poverty and homelessness, restoring schools and community centers, and tacking social justice, along with a host of other issues.  Janiah Bowers is the Executive Student Director of ASB 2023.  Janiah is a junior broadcast journalism major.  This is her 2nd time participating in ASB. “I just feel like it’s so important for me to go into communities to interact with youth who sometimes feel left out or forgotten.  They need to know we see them and we want to give them hope and provide them with the tools for a real future,” said Janiah.

WHUR has been hosting the Helping Hands Radiothon to support ASB since 2005.  “The WHUR Radiothon is our extension of continuing efforts to operate within the Howard University motto of ‘Truth and Service.’ If the students can do their part, we can do our part in lending our airwaves to help make their volunteer effort possible,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.  We are very proud of our HU students and we are thankful to have the best listeners on planet Earth who time and time again will respond to the call to donate.  The Helping Hands Radiothon is another example of our listeners’ generosity,” added Plater.

This year the Howard University Alternative Spring Break (HUASB) program is celebrating 29 years of continued service. Since 1994, HUASB has offered service learning opportunities in marginalized communities around the nation and the world. HUASB has been committed to serving communities in need and involving students in meaningful service projects in order to develop the next generation of servant leaders. The theme this year is #BackToOurRoots #TruthAndServiceForever.

WNBA player Brittney Griner cheekily sports the uniform of the Phoenix Mercury in a social media post after resigning from the team nearly a week ago, following her long-awaited return from a 10-month-long detainment in Russia last year.

Griner was detained in February of last year at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on drug possession charges when authorities found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. The 32-year-old was brought back home on December 10th, ten months later, after months of negotiations in a high-profile prisoner swap between her and Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout.

Now back home, she will be playing with the Phoenix Mercury once again after about a year, as the last time she played for them was in 2021. The WNBA star resigned on a one-year deal worth $165,100.

She was initially drafted by the Mercury in 2013, with the No. 1 overall pick out of Baylor, and continues her nine-year career with them this upcoming season.

“We missed BG every day that she was gone and, while basketball was not our primary concern, her presence on the floor, in our locker room, around our organization, and within our community was greatly missed,” says Mercury GM Jim Pitman on her return.

“We will continue to use the resources of our organization to support her, on and off the floor, and we are thrilled for her that she gets to return to basketball, which she loves so dearly. This is a special signing and today is a special day for all of us.”

On Friday, the Mercury posted a behind the scenes look into her photoshoot back in uniform, where she’s seen smiling and sporting a new short hair cut in between dribbles and passes. Her first game back will be on May 19th in Los Angeles against the Sparks.

A powerful earthquake at a devastating magnitude of 7.8 hit the country of Turkey, officially The Republic of Türkiye, in the southeastern region as well as northwest Syria earlier this month on February 6th.

Additionally, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey yet again on February 20th. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), numerous aftershocks hitting the thousands have plagued the region since the first earthquake.

Orhan Tatar, the General Manager of Turkey’s disaster management agency (AFAD), says, “This will continue for a long time… we expect these aftershocks to last for at least two years.”There is still no final death toll, as the number continues to rise above 50,000 daily as search and rescue teams continue to recover survivors and bodies still trapped under the rubble.

Reports say that there are over 87,000 injuries. More than 600 people have been investigated in relation to the 173,000 buildings that collapsed or sustained serious damage due to the earthquakes. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag says that 184 of these suspects have been detained as the structural integrity of these beings is being questioned.

Those detained include construction contractors, building owners or managers, and the mayor of the Nurdagi district which is a town close to the earthquake’s epicenter. The President’s administration has also been accused of failing to enforce building regulations.

According to experts, many fallen buildings and structures were built with inferior materials and
in ways that failed to meet government standards.

You’ve been canceled. What does it all mean?

Shunned, admonished, dismissed.  You’ve been canceled. No, not from your subscription to your favorite streaming service or magazine, but by cancel culture.
Celebrities, folks in the public eye like Don Lemon, Rhianna and ASAP Rocky, they, of late, know of it all too well.
Punishment, accountability? What are the merits and consequences of cancel culture, if any?

R. Kelly Sentenced To Additional Year In Prison In Illinois Sex Crimes

R. Kelly recently received a 20-year jail sentence in Chicago for his federal sex offenses prosecution.

R. Kelly recently received a 20-year jail sentence in Chicago for his federal sex offenses prosecution.

On Thursday (February 23), the scandalized singer appeared in federal court in Illinois. The final year will be served consecutively after serving the first 19 years concurrently with the term he’s already serving.

Prosecutors had suggested that he receive a 25-year term on top of the time he’s already serving. R. Kelly is currently incarcerated for 30 years after being found guilty of federal racketeering in New York.

U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber for the Northern District of Illinois  stated, “sentencing should be sufficient but not greater than necessary,” continuing “everybody agrees that the nature of this offense is horrible, horrific.”

“No matter what I do Mr. Kelly is not going out the door in the next 10 years, in the next 20 years,” Leinenweber said. “One of the things we should bear in mind, he is 56 years old and as Ms. Bonjean points out, he has a life expectancy of not a helluva lot more.”

Halle Bailey, who is playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid, recently addressed the racist backlash she has received online and said she expected it.

Halle Bailey, who is playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid, recently addressed the racist backlash she has received online and said she expected it.

Bailey said, “As a Black person, you just expect it, and it’s not really a shock anymore.” She continued, “Honestly, when the teaser came out, I was at the D23 Expo [ Disney’s largest fan-centric event], and I was so happy. I didn’t see any of the negativity.”

The director of The Little Mermaid said, “We just were looking for the best actor for the role, period. The end.” He continued, “Production wanted someone incredibly strong, passionate, beautiful, smart, clever with a great deal of fire and joy. Bailey fit the bill perfectly.”

Halle continued, “As a Black woman, hair is spiritual, especially locs. It was really cool for them to make Ariel a version of me with my locs. I feel like that’s what mermaid hair would be anyway.”
