No Release of Videos Showing Deputies Shooting Black Man

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — A judge has denied requests to release body camera video in the case of a Black man who killed by North Carolina deputies. The decision came Wednesday shortly after a North Carolina prosecutor said that Andrew Brown Jr. had hit law enforcement officers with his car before they opened fire. District Attorney Andrew Womble told a judge at a hearing that he viewed body camera video and disagreed with a characterization by attorneys for Brown’s family that his car was stationary when the shooting started. Womble said the video shows that Brown’s car made contact with law enforcement twice before shots could be heard on the video.

NEW YORK (AP) — A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that federal investigators have executed search warrants at Rudy Giuliani’s Manhattan residence and office. The former New York City mayor has been under investigation for several years over his business dealings in Ukraine. Details of the reasons for Wednesday’s searches were not immediately available. The officials who confirmed the execution of the search warrants did not have approval to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. Giuliani accused federal authorities of a “corrupt double standard” in a statement released through his lawyer.

Grammy Museum in Los Angeles to Reopen on May 21

NEW YORK (AP) — The Grammy Museum will reopen next month after being closed for more than a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The museum in downtown Los Angeles announced Tuesday that it will be open to the public on May 21. The museum will launch with three new exhibits — “Motown: The Sound of Young America,” “Dave Matthews Band: Inside and Out” and “Y Para Siempre… Marco Antonio Solís.” The museum will open at limited capacity to maintain social distancing, following guidelines provided by L.A. County. Attendees will be required to wear face masks and have their temperatures checked.

R&B artist Trey Songz will not face charges in an alleged altercation with police officers at the AFC championship game in Kansas City. Jackson County prosecutor’s office spokesman Mike Mansur said Tuesday that there was “insufficient evidence.” He declined to comment further. Songz, whose real name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was arrested and jailed overnight in January. Police have said he had scuffled with officers during his arrest for allegedly not following coronavirus protocols and other rules at the game. Police subsequently shared video from a camera inside Arrowhead Stadium that showed a scuffle. Songz’s representative, Sydney Margetson, declined to comment.

Carmelo Anthony Memoir Coming Out in September

NEW YORK (AP) — Carmelo Anthony’s life story includes a great deal besides basketball. The 10-time NBA All-Star has a memoir coming out September 14 that publisher Gallery Books is calling “raw and inspirational.” It traces his rise from housing projects in New York City and Baltimore to becoming an Olympic gold medalist and one of the NBA’s top scorers. The book is called “Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised” and is co-written by D. Watkins. Anthony is currently with the Portland Trail Blazers. He previously played for the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks among other teams.

Chauvin Juror Says Guilty Verdicts Could Have Come Quicker

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A juror who cast one of the unanimous votes to convict a white former Minneapolis police officer of killing George Floyd said deliberations were primarily spent trying to convince one person who was uncertain about part of the jury instructions. Brandon Mitchell is the first juror that deliberated in Derek Chauvin’s trial to talk publicly about his experience. He says he felt like deliberations “should have been 20 minutes.” The 31-year-old Mitchell, who is Black, says the one juror was “kind of hung up with a few words in the instructions,” but “wanted to make sure they got it right.” Chauvin was convicted April 20 on all counts: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

DC Police Dept. Hit by Extortion Attack

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington, D.C., police department says its computer network has been breached. The department says a Russian-speaking ransomware syndicate claims to have stolen sensitive data, including on informants, and is threatening to share it with local criminal gangs if the department does not pay an unspecified ransom. The cybercriminals posted screenshots on their website supporting their claim to have stolen more than 250 gigabytes of data. The District’s Metropolitan Police Department says it has asked the FBI to investigate the “unauthorized access.” There is no indication that any police operations were affected.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — An independent autopsy shows that a Black man killed by deputies in North Carolina was shot five times, including in the back of the head. That’s according to attorneys for Andrew Brown Jr.’s family. The death certificate lists a head wound as the cause of death. In other developments Tuesday, the FBI announced a federal civil rights investigation into last week’s shooting by deputies serving drug-related search and arrest warrants in the North Carolina town of Elizabeth City. A court hearing scheduled for Wednesday will consider making the the video public.

CDC: Americans Can Go Maskless Outdoors… Sometimes

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says wearing a mask outside can be eliminated in some cases for those who are fully vaccinated and for those who are not.

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, April 27, 2021) – As expected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is out with new guidance for mask wearing for fully vaccinated Americans and those who are not vaccinated.  Federal health officials say those who have received either the one shot J&J vaccine or the two shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines can now go without masks outdoors.  But there are some exceptions.

The guidance is the latest set of recommendations for persons who are at least two weeks past their final dose of the COVID-19 vaccinations.  Americans can go without masking up while outdoors when walking, jogging, biking, or dining with friends at outside venues.

Meantime, those new guidelines even apply to unvaccinated people.  But the CDC is cautioning both groups to still wear masks when attending large events outdoors like sporting, performances, protests, and parades.

The new guidelines come as more and more Americans are rolling up their sleeves to take their shots.  The latest figures show that 52 percent of Americans have now had at least one shot.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — A family attorney says a Black man killed by authorities in North Carolina had his hands on his car steering wheel when he was shot. Attorney Chantel Cherry-Lassiter watched a 20-second portion of body camera video with family of Andrew Brown Jr. on Monday. She says Brown did not appear to be a threat to officers as he backed his vehicle out and tried to drive away. Brown was shot and killed by deputies serving a search warrant last week. Protesters have demanded the video to be released publicly.

3 Arrested In Murder of Pregnant PG Woman

Prince George’s County police are still searching for a motive in the murder of a pregnant woman. Three suspects in custody charged with the brutal crime.

(Monday, April 26, 2021) – Prince George’s County police have arrested three people in the shooting death of 18-year-old J’Lyn Quinones of Suitland.  The pregnant woman was fatally shot last Tuesday and another woman was injured as they crossed a road in Capitol Heights.

Charged with murder is 21-year-old Malik Johnson of SE, DC.  He is accused of being the gunman and faces first and second degree murder charges.  His brother Michael Johnson, thought to be the baby’s father, was charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly helping Malik Johnson avoid arrest.  23-year-old Bianca McDuffie is also facing the same charge.  The trio was arrested at McDuffie’s SW, DC home.  They are pending extradition.

Police are still searching for the motive in the shooting.  While Quinones died of her injuries, the doctors were able to save her baby girl who remains in critical condition.  The other woman injured in that shooting is said to be out of the hospital.

Meantime, family members and friends held a vigil last evening to remember Quinones and to pray for her baby girl.

Rededication Day For Fairfax County School

(Springfield, VA) — A rededication ceremony is scheduled for today to rename the Robert E. Lee High School. A 4:30 p.m. ceremony is scheduled to rename the school in honor of late Congressman John Lewis. The process to rename the school started more than a year ago following Lewis’ death, but was sidetracked by the COVID pandemic. The school, which opened to students in 1958, is one of the first schools in the D.C. metropolitan area tied to confederate history to complete its name change.

(New Brunswick, NJ) — Johnson and Johnson is agreeing to put a warning label on its COVID-19 vaccine. The drug maker negotiated a deal as a C-D-C advisory panel considers lifting the pause on the vaccine after reports of blood clots in rare cases. The panel is expected to vote on that issue later today. The panel learned today two more people died from blood clotting syndrome soon after receiving the shot. That brings the number of deaths in America to three. Nearly eight-million Americans have received the shot. Seven others were hospitalized, including four who ended up in intensive care.

Ladies Night is always fun with the Ladies of WHUR… But, this is one for the books.

It all started when Angela suggested to Nina Brown that they were gonna “hook her up” with a dating profile.

She and Autumn Joi asked Nina what her preferences are in a guy… Okay… everything was going smoothly…

Nina said she’s 6 ft tall and doesn’t mind dating someone taller or shorter. As long as they have confidence.

But then, our very own “shock jock” Autumn took the reigns and said there were some other… very specific requirements the man should most definitely have. LOL

Hawaii To Begin Vaccine Passports For Travel Between Islands

Hawaii is ensuring that people traveling between islands are safe.
Governor David Ige announced Hawaii would begin accepting a vaccination exemption on May 11 for interisland travelers who received their vaccination in Hawaii. They will also have to have completed the required 14-day waiting period.
Also, the state’s vaccination exemption allows qualifying interisland travelers to bypass the state’s 10-day travel quarantine. And those travelers will not have to go through the Safe Travels Hawaii pre-testing program or post-arrival testing.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hundreds gathered to remember Daunte Wright Thursday, 11 days after the young Black man was shot by police during a traffic stop and two days after Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder in George Floyd’s death. Hundreds of mourners filled Shiloh Temple International Ministries for the funeral of Wright, who died April 11 after a white Brooklyn Center police officer shot the 20-year-old. Her chief said it appeared the officer mistakenly used her gun instead of her Taser. Wright’s killing came amid increasing tension during the weekslong trial of Derek Chauvin, the white former police officer who killed Floyd.

House Approves Bill Granting Statehood To Washington, DC

(Washington, DC) — A bill granting statehood to Washington, DC is headed to the Senate after passage by the House. The vote was 216-208. The measure faces a tough climb in the tightly-divided Senate, which has a 60-vote threshold for the passage of bills. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called it long overdue and noted that the roughly 700-thousand residents of Washington, DC have no voting representation in Congress. Republicans are fiercely opposed to DC statehood because it would likely add more Democrats to Congress. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy called it a “power grab” and an effort to further a Democratic “socialist agenda.”

The singer shared various looks from the campaign on social media.
She wrote, “Badu for BURBERRY. Congratulations Ricardo. We adore you. Beautiful Show. It’s an honor.”
Riccardo Tisci is the chief creative officer of Burberry. The pair worked together in 2014 on a Givenchy campaign.

Rihanna continues to make money moves as she purchases the mansion next door to her current $13.8 million Beverly Hills mansion that she bought three months ago.

Rihanna plopped down $10 million for the four-bedroom, four-and-a-half baths, formal living and dining rooms, an eat-in kitchen, and a family room.

Both mansions sit in the neighborhood where Madonna, Mariah Carey, and Sir Paul McCartney have lived in recent years.

Rihanna also owns a $6.8 million Hollywood Hills villa, a $5.5 million penthouse in “The Century” skyscraper, a high-floor flat in L.A.’s Wilshire Corridor, and another mansion in her native Barbados.

Cardi B is looking to break into the multi-billion dollar beauty industry.

The “Up” rapper filed a trademark for “Bardi Beauty” under the company Washpoppin, Inc.

According to the trademark documents, Cardi would be able to use “Bardi Beauty” for cosmetics, fragrances, haircare, skincare, nail polish, and nail enamel.

Previously Cardi has teamed up with Fashion Nova for her own curated fashions and her latest collaboration with Reebok is on the way.

However, Ultimate Classic Rock has ranked the top 25.
Coming in at number one was Marvin Gaye, “What’s Going On.”
Other artists on the list include Stevie Wonder, Al Green, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, The Isley Brothers, and Donny Hathaway.

As far as fan votes go, there is one clear leader in this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees.
Tina Turner has garnered over 500,000 votes to take the lead in fan votes for this year’s nomination process.
While some say the recent documentary on Tina Turner has helped, it is clear that she has been a longtime favorite for fans.
Following Turner are Fela Kuti, the Go-Gos, Iron Maiden, and Foo Fighters.

This is according to Page Six.
The memorial will take place on April 24th. It is a private ceremony, but fans will be able to tune in via a live stream.

Man Returns to His $6M Home To Find Someone Had Borrowed It To Get Married

Guests were invited to a beautiful Florida estate called the Wilson’s Estate.
They were invited to the $6 million mansion for the wedding of Shenita Jones to Courtney Wilson–hence the name The Wilson’s Estate.
One problem-more like a $6 million problem, Courtney nor Shenita had ANY claims to the mansion.
The home was not theirs, they had not paid to use the home and the owner knew nothing about it.
But the owner found out when he returned home to the wedding.
Police were called, the couple and guests left and no charges were brought against the couple.
If you were the home owner, how would you have handled the situation? Do you think you would have let the wedding continue then call the police?

Jobless Claims Hit Pandemic Low

The U.S. economy is gaining steam with more and more Americans filing fewer jobless claims.

Washington, D.C. (April 22, 2021) – New signs this morning that the economy is on the comeback.  Jobless claims filed last week hit a new pandemic low at 547,000.  The Labor Deported reported today it is the second week in a row that claims dropped significantly.

Experts say the new figures show the nation’s recovery is gaining steam fueling the economy is rebounding as coronavirus vaccinations pick up and stimulus chicks continue to hit bank accounts.

On a less than bright note, poverty rose to 11.7 percent in March.  Researchers from the University of Chicago say that’s the highest level of the pandemic. 

Additionally, the economy has not been as kind to women.  Figures show although the U.S. economy added 916,0000 positions last month, only one third of those jobs were gained by women.  The National Women’s Law Center says women would need as much as 15 months of job gains at last month’s levels to recover the nearly 5 million net jobs lost since last February.

When it comes to black and white wealth, the injustice is glaring.  The gap in wealth between black and white households is nothing knew.  The financial disparity reflects accumulated inequality and discrimination that span across all aspects of black life. Greece to Reopen Tourism Services on May 15

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece’s prime minister says the country’s tourism industry will open on May 15 when a ban on travel between different regions in the country will also be lifted. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made the announcement in a televised address Wednesday, adding that restaurants and cafes will be allowed to reopen in outdoor areas starting on May 3. Restrictions, many of which have been in effect since early November, will remain in place over the Orthodox Easter on May 2.
