Could DC Decriminalize Prostitution?

DC To Hold Public Hearing On Bill To Decriminalize Sex Trade

(Washington, DC) — The Washington DC City Council will hold a public hearing Thursday to consider fully decriminalizing the sex trade in the District. The Community Safety and Health Amendment Act of 2019 was introduced by independent DC council member David Grosso on June 4th. According to reports, the act would remove all criminal penalties for commercial sexual exchanges, such as prostitution, for those 18 years and older. If passed, it would make DC the first city in the U.S. where prostitution and sex work is decriminalized.

Rapper DMX reported Saturday that he would be cancelling all of his upcoming concerts to return to rehab.

DMX was scheduled to perform Sunday at New York’s Rolling Loud festival, but when the festival unveiled the schedule, DMX was not listed on the itinerary. DMX also did not attend his scheduled appearance Thursday at Def Jam’s 35th anniversary party in Brooklyn.

DMX shared that he has been struggling with substance abuse for years. In 2017, he also cancelled a series of shows in order to go to rehab.

In an Instagram post to fans made this weekend, DMX announced, “In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility. He apologizes for his cancelled shows and thanks his fans for their continued support.”

“It is important right now that he take some time off to focus on his health so that he can be a better father, friend and entertainer,” DMX’s manager Pat Gallo said in a statement at the time. “We are eternally grateful for the outpouring of concern and support that has poured in. We ask that you please keep X in your prayers as he embraces your support.”

Cyntoia Brown Would Apologize To The Family Of The Man She Murdered

“They’ve lost a loved one and I took that person from them,” she said. “Of course I would tell them that I apologize, If they’s ever want an opportunity to speak with me, I’d be more than happy to.”

Cyntoia Brown-Long  did an interview with Craig Melvin of the Today Show to promote her new book and talk about her life after her release from prison. Melvin read a statement from the family of the man she murdered where they said that they felt the justice system failed because of her release. Brown said if they had a chance to speak with them, she would apologize for her actions.

“They’ve lost a loved one and I took that person from them,” she said. “Of course I would tell them that I apologize, If they’s ever want an opportunity to speak with me, I’d be more than happy to.”

Brown was serving a life sentence the received at 16 until the public caught wind of her story. She was released for prison in August of this year after serving 15 years for murdering a man who solicited sex from her. Celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Kim Kardashian West and Rihanna were champions for her release from prison. She became a symbol for unfair sentencing for sex trafficking victims.

Originally, she was sentenced to life, but Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granted her clemency.

In prison, Brown earned both her high school and college degree and also mentored other inmates. Since her release, Brown married recording artist J. Long and is currently promoting her new book, “Free Cyntoia,” where she is sharing her story.

Pharrell No Longer Stands By ‘Blurred Lines’

Pharrel says, “I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women. And I was like, Got it. I get it. Cool. My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel.”

In 2013 Pharrell co-wrote and was featured on the song “Blurred Lines” alongside T.I and Robin Thicke. Now, he says it’s a song he doesn’t believe in anymore.

The “Happy” singer told GQ “Some of my old songs, I would never write or sing today. I get embarrassed by some of that stuff. It just took a lot of time and growth to get to that place.”

The hit song spent 33 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 but it wasn’t without controversy. It was criticized by listeners for being sexually predatory. The Daily Beast even called it out for being “kind of rapey.”

Pharrell looking back now says he didn’t understand that at first, especially because women seemed to like the song. He defended the song back in 2013 to Pitchfork stating “When you pull back and look at the entire song, the point is: She’s a good girl, and even good girls want to do things, and that’s where you have the blurred lines.

Now, he says, “I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women. And I was like, Got it. I get it. Cool. My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel.”

The producer and artist is on a new path since discovering the power behind his music. He says he finally understands that we live in a chauvinistic society and that he doesn’t want to play into that anymore.

According to The Source, Bassett began her speech saying she “thanks God for sanctuaries like the Rape Treatment Center and Stuart House.” Bassett admits, when she was a young teen her mother’s boyfriend used to come into her room at night. She says, “Fortunately, it wasn’t a complete assault, it was fondling, but it was devastating enough for a child who’s 12 or 13.”

The Rape Foundation focuses on providing support and treatment “for victims of rape, sexual assault and other forms of sexual abuse.” Bassett speaks on how she’s raising her children to understand that no means no. She goes on to say, “You just want them to be aware, they’ll be in situations one day, and when a girl says no, both to him and to her, she means no.”

The 9-1-1 actress wishes that we didn’t live in a world with sexual assault, but thankful to have sanctuaries like the Rape Foundation that are here to support.

“Having a compound that is a beautiful place – right here that is somewhere in this 330 acres – where they’re trained in the business, and they become self-sufficient, they live in nice apartments, there’s daycare, theres all of these wonderful things that allow them to reenter society.”

Tyler Perry’s new studio will have a housing complex for displaced LGBTQ teens and homeless women.

Being the first black person in the United States to own a major film studio outright is a legacy in itself, but he wants his legacy to be more than the studio. In an interview with Gayle King for CBS this morning, Perry said he want his legacy to be the people that said shelter will help.

“Having a compound that is a beautiful place – right here that is somewhere in this 330 acres – where they’re trained in the business, and they become self-sufficient, they live in nice apartments, there’s daycare, there’s all of these wonderful things that allow them to reenter society,” he told King.

The shelter will be for homeless women, trafficking survivors and LGBTQ youth that have been kicked out of their homes.

Perry, who had to sleep in his car when he first moved to Atlanta, experienced homelessness.

“When I moved to Atlanta, I moved off of Syvlan [road] with my cousin and got put out, had no money, that kind of thing.”

In the same interview, the entertainment mogul discussed how it was important to him that black people are employed and celebrated in all parts of production. He said that as recently as 2019, he’s been the only black face on a set and his studio

“So when I come to work here, and every black person that comes to work here, they go “oh my God! It’s heaven! Here we are. We’re represented. Where everyone is represented,” he said.

Kevin Hart Returns To Work This Week

He’s slowly continuing to work, as a TMZ source reveals that, “he’s reported to work this week to promote the upcoming ‘Jumanji’ sequel in a new marketing campaign, which clearly required his presence, because he’s nowhere near 100 percent yet.”

After a near fatal car crash in September, Kevin Hart is slowly easing back into work.

Last Thursday, Hart released a statement through his attorney acknowledging the other two passengers involved in the accident. In his statement to PEOPLE, Hart says, “I have nothing but love for Jared and wish him and Rebecca a speedy recovery.”

Hart isn’t expected to fully return back to work until early 2020. He’s slowly continuing to work, as a TMZ source reveals that, “he’s reported to work this week to promote the upcoming ‘Jumanji’ sequel in a new marketing campaign, which clearly required his presence, because he’s nowhere near 100 percent yet.

The accident caused Hart to have three spinal fractures and undergo surgery. With the help of a physical therapist and outpatient care, Hart is making progress and headed towards a full recovery.

Although he hasn’t made a complete come back, it is without a doubt that he will be back in his ‘Hustle Hart’ mindset.

Ft. Worth Officer Resigns After Shooting Death Of Unarmed Black Woman

“Any neighborhood would be proud to have her as a neighbor and any city would be proud to have her as a citizen,” Carr said.

***UPDATE***

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Fort Worth police chief says a white officer who fatally shot a black woman in her home has resigned.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — The family of a 28-year-old black woman who was shot and killed by a white police officer in her Fort Worth home as she played video games with her 8-year-old nephew expressed outrage Monday that the officer has not been arrested or fired.
The Fort Worth Police Department said officers responded about 2:25 a.m. Saturday after a neighbor called a non-emergency line to report the home’s front door had been left open. The responding officer fired a shot through a window, killing Atatiana Jefferson.
“Why this man is not in handcuffs is a source of continued agitation for this family and for this community,” family attorney Lee Merritt said at a news conference in Dallas on Monday.
Interim Police Chief said later Monday that the officer, Aaron Dean, has resigned. He said if Dean had not stepped down, he would have been fired.
Merritt said the officer’s firing was “the least we should expect.”
Fort Worth is about 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Dallas, where another high-profile police shooting occurred last year. In that case, white Dallas police officer Amber Guyger fatally shot her black neighbor Botham Jean inside his own apartment after Guyger said she mistook it for her own. Guyger, 31, was sentenced this month to 10 years in prison.
On Monday, family members described Jefferson as a smart, nurturing woman who recently moved in with her mother to help care for her in her declining health. A sister, Ashley Carr, said Jefferson embodied, honor, integrity, commitment and service.
“Any neighborhood would be proud to have her as a neighbor and any city would be proud to have her as a citizen,” Carr said.
In a statement, Fort Worth police said that officers saw someone near a window inside the home and that one of them drew his duty weapon and fired after “perceiving a threat.” The body camera video released by police shows two officers searching the home from the outside with flashlights before one shouts, “Put your hands up, show me your hands.” One shot is then fired through a window.
In the video, the officer does not identify himself as police.
A single bullet hole was visible in the window of the single-story, freshly painted purple home and floral tributes and stuffed animals piled up in the street outside Jefferson’s home.
According to a demographics report released by the Fort Worth Police Department, nearly two-thirds of its 1,100 officers were white, as of June 30. Just over 20% were Hispanic or Latino and about 10% were black.
Relations with the public have been strained after other recent Fort Worth police shootings. In June, the department released body camera footage of officers fatally shooting a man who ignored repeated orders to drop his handgun. He was the fourth person Fort Worth police had fired upon in 10 days.
Ed Kraus took as interim police chief in the city in May after the previous chief was fired.
The Fort Worth Police Officers Association issued a statement Sunday calling for “a thorough and transparent investigation” into the shooting.
Fort Worth police said it released the bodycam footage soon after the shooting for transparency, but that any “camera footage inside the residence” could not be distributed due to state law.
The bodycam video included blurred still frames showing a gun inside a bedroom. It’s unclear if the firearm was found near Jefferson, and police have not said that the officer who shot her thought she was holding a gun. The police statement released Saturday said only that officers who entered the residence after the shooting found a firearm, and Lt. Brandon O’Neil would not answer reporters’ questions Sunday on why police released images of the gun.
O’Neil said the officer would meet with investigators from the Fort Worth Police Department on Monday about the shooting. Police previously said the officer, a white man, joined the department in April 2018.
A large crowd gathered outside Jefferson’s home Sunday night for a vigil after earlier demonstrations briefly stopped traffic on part of Interstate 35.
Jefferson was a 2014 graduate of Xavier University in New Orleans and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, the university said. Merritt told the Star-Telegram that Jefferson was working in pharmaceutical equipment sales and was considering going back to medical school.

Simone Biles Is The Most Decorated Gymnast Ever

“She’s just above anything else that we have seen in the sport,” five-time Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci said of Biles on Sunday, praising “the domination that she has toward all the other gymnasts that competed here.”

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Next stop Tokyo for Simone Biles.

With Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps both retired since the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the U.S. gymnast will be the face of the games for much of the world.

In gymnastics, no one else comes close. Biles won five of the six gold medals at last week’s world championships and broke the all-time record of 25 medals by any gymnast, male or female.

“She’s just above anything else that we have seen in the sport,” five-time Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci said of Biles on Sunday, praising “the domination that she has toward all the other gymnasts that competed here.”

Biles has not just got the talent. She’s got the character of an Olympic star.

There’s the laser-like focus on training, the same easygoing humor which endeared the world to Bolt, and — crucially in the modern era — a savvy social-media style.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said Sunday that Biles’ star status would make gymnastics a must-see event at the Tokyo Olympics.

“You can have legends confirming their status as we have just seen with Simone Biles, this amazing performance there on the beam, but you also have new stars,” he said. “Gymnastics has all the ingredients to be top another time, I must say. A top Olympic event in Tokyo.”

Despite its dispute with Biles over the scoring for her new double-double beam dismount — its grade was lessened in part so as not to encourage less-skilled gymnasts to attempt the risky move — the International Gymnastics Federation knows Biles is crucial to the sport.

Labeling her “wonder woman” and “a hero,” FIG president Morinari Watanabe is keen for Biles not to retire after the Tokyo Olympics. “I hope she will continue after 2020, because she is an excellent athlete,” he said Sunday.

Biles is certainly the only athlete who could pull off her look in training at the U.S. nationals in August. She caused a stir with a leotard bearing her surname and a goat’s head picked out in sequins, a nod to “Greatest Of All Time.”

Few disagree, but Biles hasn’t yet won everyone over.

“There’s no need to turn her into some unbeatable queen. If I was 15 years younger, I’d definitely take the fight to the American,” the Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina said in comments on the Russian Olympic Committee website Thursday.

Khorkina won 20 world championship medals between 1994 and 2001 and held the women’s record until Biles overtook her Tuesday.

One record is likely to remain out of Biles’ reach, however. Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina won a record 15 Olympic medals between 1956 and 1964. Biles won five Olympic medals in Rio de Janeiro, and could add six more next year in Tokyo, but appears highly unlikely to stick around until the 2024 Olympics.

However, there’s another record to aim for. Matching her world championship performance from last week would make Biles the first female gymnast to win five gold medals at a single Olympics, and the first female athlete to do so in any sport since East German swimmer Kristin Otto in 1988.

After Biles pioneered a new beam dismount and triple-double on the floor this season, her coach Laurent Landi says he favors refining her existing routines for the Olympics over adding yet more upgrades.

“I can find plenty of (upgrades), but you need to be realistic and only the medals count at the end,” he said. “We don’t need to show off everything we can do.”

White TX Police Officer Shoots And Kills AA Woman In Her Own Home

Jefferson was watching her 8-year-old nephew and playing video games with him at the time. The child was not injured. The unidentified officer will be interviewed sometime today. Over the weekend residents took to the streets demanding justice for Jefferson.

It has happened again. Another white police officer in the state of Texas has shot and killed a black person who was doing nothing illegal in their own home.

The most recent incident happened around 2 a.m. Saturday morning in Fort Worth. Officers responding to a welfare check fatally shoot and kill the homeowner within seconds of arriving at the home.

28-year-old Atatiana Koquice Jefferson was killed Saturday after a neighbor concerned that her front door had been open for several hours. The neighbor James Smith called a nonemergency number to get someone to check on Jefferson. According to reports the officers parked near the home and began searching the outside of the home. At some point, they saw someone inside standing near a window and one of the officers opened fired without identifying himself. A police spokesman and the chief of police verified that it was all caught on bodycam footage.

Jefferson was watching her 8-year-old nephew and playing video games with him at the time. The child was not injured. The unidentified officer will be interviewed sometime today. Over the weekend residents took to the streets demanding justice for Jefferson.

This shooting comes some two weeks after former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison for mistakenly walking into the apartment of her black neighbor and shooting and killing him.

The attorney for the Jefferson family, Lee Merritt says this matter is far from over. The family is devastated and they are calling this simply murder.

The 60-day measure is a lot like the campaign that the department does every summer.

The 60-day measure is a lot like the campaign that the department does every summer. This program will focus on putting more officers in known crime areas, working to get illegal guns off the streets, targeting repeat offenders and creating more outreach opportunities with young people.

Here are the numbers for this District. There have been 140 homicides this year. MPD says they saw a 26% drop in overall crime and a 22% decline in violent crime.

Some of the areas on the radar for police include Southwest, the U Street corridor, Columbia Heights, Shaw, Saratoga, Greenway, Congress Heights, and Washington Highlands.

Howard University Doing Big Things With Amazon Studios

Washington, D.C. – (Friday, October 11, 2019) – Howard University is joining forces with Amazon Studios to create Howard Entertainment, a program designed to diversify the entertainment industry.  The announcement was made today as Howard President Dr. Wayne Frederick delivered his State of Howard Address during Homecoming celebration week.  Amazon Studios is the lead sponsor of this year’s Annual Yardfest.

WHUR Reporter Bremante Bryant spoke with Latasha Gillespie, Amazon Studio’s Global Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion about the new partnership.

Howard Entertainment will act as a pipeline for African-American students and other marginalized populations to train and study alongside entertainment executives, offering students a unique interdisciplinary curriculum, coupled with hands-on work experiences and networking with Amazon’s industry partners.  “The vision of Howard Entertainment is to offer a one-of-a-kind experience for students interested in all aspects of entertainment, from project greenlighting, to PR and marketing, to entertainment law and finance,” said President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA. “This relationship aligns with Howard’s strategic goals of enhancing academic excellence and inspiring new knowledge. Collaborating with Amazon Studios will enable us to marry academia and industry efforts to build a robust workforce of diverse entertainment industry leaders. With Howard’s proven track record of developing some of Hollywood’s most notable actors, comedians and musicians, this next level collaboration will enable us to have even greater impact.”

The Howard Entertainment program is an immersive two semester experience located in Los Angeles, California that offers Howard University students the opportunity to take academic courses during the spring semester and participate in a fellowship imbedded in the entertainment industry during the summer semester. The coursework will be applied toward the student’s graduation requirements and the fellowship provides much needed hands-on experience and an opportunity to make invaluable networking connections.  Students will have to engage in a competitive process to be selected for the program. To qualify, students must be enrolled as a Howard University student, must be an upperclassman or graduate student and will have to complete an application and interview to be considered for the program. Students will be taught by Howard faculty who will be supported by Amazon Studios employees and other industry professionals invited by Amazon. This model will provide the opportunity for students to be engaged in projects that offer “real world” application and will help students develop “work ready” skills prior to graduating. Additionally, students will benefit from an innovative application of academic coursework, and also hone entrepreneurial skills through the project-based approach. Participating schools or colleges at the University will provide additional details on the program and competitive application process at future townhall meetings.

Latasha Gillespie, Amazon Studio’s Global Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion said: “This program is all about intentionality – being intentional about increasing and preparing the next generation of African American, Latinx and Native American storytellers, casts, crew, and executives working on these projects.”

Hogan Supports Impeachment Inquiry

Maryland’s republican governor supports the impeachment inquiry of President Trump. Larry Hogan ways he wants the inquiry, controlled by Democrats in the House of Representatives, to be fair and objective.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is the latest elected Republican official to say he supports the impeachment inquiry of President Trump. In an interview with PBS’s Firing Line, Hogan said he thinks there needs to be an investigation because he doesn’t see any other way to get to the facts. The governor said he’s not ready to support impeachment or removal of the president, but thinks an inquiry of his conduct is warranted. He did say however, he’s concerned about whether the inquiry could be fair and objective in the Democrat-controlled House.  Hogan said the claim by the White House that it will not cooperate with the inquiry doesn’t sit well with him or a lot of other people.  The Republican said “we’ve got to get the facts,” and step back from crazy politics.

FORWARD: 2019 HOMECOMING

It’s a time where everyone comes together – students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends – to show Bison pride. An experience like none other, Howard Homecoming is a time to celebrate the many things that make Howard so special: the community, excellence, and experience!

Each year alumni near and far return to the Mecca to honor tradition, reminisce about their Howard experiences and make new memories. It’s a time to connect with old friends and make new ones.

“Forward” is the concept of Howard’s recently unveiled strategic plan called Howard Forward: 2024, which outlines the University’s vision to advance the mission over the next five years. As the Bison community returns to campus with fond memories and proud reflections of the rich Howard legacy, Homecoming is also an opportunity to look ahead at the new generation of scholars and celebrate the future accomplishments and milestones to come. This year’s theme reflects this sentiment.

Officials In Prince George’s Co. Are Looking To See If Too Much Homework Is Given Out

Soon parents will receive the survey via email. You can actually go online and get the survey for yourself starting on or around October 16th.

School officials are reviewing the Prince George’s County School Systems policy and procedures on homework assignments. They are looking to answer the question if too much is given to students.

A committee made up of school administrators, teachers, parents, and students will review surveys and then present the outcome in 2021.

Soon parents will receive the survey via email. You can actually go online and get the survey for yourself starting on or around October 16th.

The study follows a number of national studies on this very topic of what is too much and where it no longer benefits children learning. A study conducted by Duke University professor Harris Cooper states that a student should only have 10 minutes of homework a night for every grade level achieved.

If you want more information on this effort you can email gradingandreporting@pgcps.org.

Florida Parking Space Killer Sentenced

Killer of black man in parking dispute gets 20 years

A white Florida man who told detectives he was irritated by people who illegally park in handicapped spots was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man outside a convenience store.
Circuit Judge Joseph Bulone called 49-year-old Michael Drejka a “wanna-be” law enforcement officer and a self-appointed “handicapped parking space monitor.”
Jurors found Drejka guilty of manslaughter in August. Drejka showed no emotion when the judge sentenced him.
Drejka confronted Markeis McGlockton’s girlfriend Britany Jacobs in July 2018 for parking in a handicapped space at a Clearwater convenience store. McGlockton had gone inside the store with his 5-year-old son to buy drinks. As the confrontation continued, a customer went into the store and alerted McGlockton.
Security video shows McGlockton leaving the store and shoving Drejka to the ground. Seconds later, Drejka pulls out a handgun and shoots the 28-year-old McGlockton as he backs away.
Initially, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said he wouldn’t arrest Drejka, saying the shooting was not a crime under the state’s ‘stand your ground’ law, which allows someone to use deadly force if they believe it necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm.
A security video from the store, however, shows McGlockton appearing to step back and turn away as Drejka fires the shot, which strikes McGlockton in the side.
McGlockton’s family hired a lawyer and held a news conference demanding justice, while U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate. Authorities later decided to charge Drejka.
The judge said he found it most ironic that Drejka drove up, illegally parked next to Jacobs’ car and then confronted her about parking illegally in a handicapped space.
“He just seems to come out of nowhere, kind of like a superhero, to see that he enforces the handicapped parking spot,” Bulone said.
Jacobs, along with McGlockton’s parents, spoke before the sentencing.
“There are no words to fully describe what his loss has done to our family,” said Jacobs, who had four children with McGlockton. “Our youngest two children will never have memories of their daddy.”
Defense attorney Theresa Jean-Pierre Coy read a letter from Drejka’s wife in which she defended her husband, saying he was not a bad person. She also wrote that she and other family and friends had received threats and decided to stay away from the courtroom.

Taraji P. Henson Creates ‘Peace Rooms’ For Students Coping With Anxiety And Trauma

The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation is named after her father who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), after his service in the Vietnam war.

Contributed by Amber Cooper

Earlier this year Taraji P. Henson announced the founding of the Boris Lawrence Henson foundation that partners with schools to assist African American children that seek mental health support.

The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation is named after her father who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), after his service in the Vietnam war. In an interview with NBC, Henson recalls friends and family saying, “You know Boris, he crazy.” Henson addresses the stigma around mental health and says, “In the African American community, it’s taboo. For so long, it’s been looked upon as a weakness in our community.” She is now on a mission to create a new perspective.

Henson has begun two of her initiatives associated with the foundation. The foundation has partnered with The Chicago High School for the Arts, where students can now verbally come together and speak on how they feel about issues on anxiety, depression and trauma. According to Today.com, the foundation has created ‘Peace Rooms,’ that “are painted with encouraging quotes to help students with anxiety who need to step away.” Henson says, “We’re letting them know that they are worthy, and that they matter in a world that’s telling them they don’t right now.” In an Instagram post from Henson, students are seen coming together to paint their vision.

The foundation also offers scholarships to African American students that would like to enter the mental health field and interested in decreasing the gap of African American therapists.

While continuing to push her initiatives and spread awareness on changing the narrative of mental health in the black community, Henson has completed filming for the hit T.V show, Empire, as the series is officially coming to an end.

Activists Demand Prince George’s Co. Officers Wear Body Cams

Community activists say they will continue to push for it until it mandatory for every officer on the police force to have one.

It’s been four years since Prince George’s County Police in conjunction with the University of Maryland began an impact study on the issue.

Today activists say enough time has passed and they want the county council to take up legislation making it a requirement for all officers to do so.

Right now, only 80 of the forces 1,500 officers are wearing body cameras as apart of a 3-year old pilot program. Council Chair Todd Turning is calling for more review versus legislation. the Police Department reportedly supports it and so does County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. Supporters point to other areas that have already made it mandatory like DC and Montgomery County.

Money seems to be a factor for the department says Jennifer Donelan, spokesperson for the Prince George’s County Police Department. She remains hopeful that eventually, they will have the money they need to make sure all officers have the cameras.

A Gang Related Fight At Northwestern Prompts School Leaders To Bring In Police

School officials and the police gang unit are working to hold a parent meeting sometime early next week.

There will be a noticeable police presence at Prince George’s County Northwestern High School in Hyattsville. The precautionary move follows yesterday’s fight at school between two gangs.

Reports indicate that brawl started with one student using a sharp object against another student from a rival gang. It all happened in a stairwell at the school. Two students had to be hospitalized. a 19-year-old who was cut in the chest and a 16-year-old who was injured by his own knife on his hand. Three students were taken into custody. No charges had been filed as of this morning.

Robocalls from the principle went out to parents. It did not, however, mention that it was gang-related. It simply said there had been an “altercation” between several students. An update letter is expected to be sent out today to parents.

Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones supported removing the entire plaque and voted against the plan to alter it.

A Look Inside Tyler Perry Studios

Contributed by Amber Cooper

Saturday Tyler Perry hosted a grand opening celebration to the official Tyler Perry Film Studios in Atlanta.

The 330 acre film studio consist of sound studios, a white house, a hospital set and a long list of other notable features. This studio location carries great significance as it formally served as a Confederate Army Base. The confederates were in favor of continuing slavery and now this location is owned by one black man.

Stars from every part of the industry came out to celebrate Perry’s great accomplishment. There are 12 sound studios named after a significant actor in the community. Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, and the late Diahann Carroll are amongst a few stars that were honored.

Perry even went as far as honoring celebs with their own star on the grounds of his studio that were a part of his films. China Anne McClain can be seen in an Instagram post smiling and saying, “I think my huge smile says it all.. To receive this in front of Oprah, Denzel Washington, and multiple others that I have so much respect for… it’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

According to Curbed Atlanta, the location consist of several replicated sets that include a trailer park, luxury hotel lobby, a 16,000-square-foot mansion, a diner and as previously stated, a white house and hospital set. However, the studio is not just for film production. Perry is hoping to start initiatives that will help combat human trafficking, create retail options, and use the venue for large concerts and events.

11 Alive: Where Atlanta Speaks highlight parts of the studio during construction in 2018 and a closer look at the finished product is featured across social media

Perry is officially the only black man in America to outright own their own film studio. Perry will continue to provide opportunities for stars as he stamps his name in the industry.

For the first time democrat Joe Biden says Donald Trump must be impeached

ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is saying for the first time that President Donald Trump must be impeached for abusing the powers of his office to help his own reelection.
Biden made the remarks campaigning Wednesday in New Hampshire.
Biden said Trump is “shooting holes in the Constitution” by asking foreign powers to interfere in the 2020 election. Trump in a July phone call to Ukraine’s leader had asked for “a favor” of investigating Biden and his son, Hunter.
House Democrats have begun impeachment proceedings against Trump based on a rough transcript of the July 25 telephone call.

Biles Sets Record As US Wins World Gymnastics Team Gold

“Every year it feels better and better just because we’re adding to the legacy,” Biles said. “I feel like I never think of records. I just go out there and do what I came to do, which is compete for the country.”

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Simone Biles won a record 21st medal at the world gymnastics championships on Tuesday as the United States retained its women’s team all-around title.

It was Biles’ 15th career gold and broke a tie with Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina for the most medals overall by a woman at the world championships. She’s now two short of Vitaly Scherbo’s all-time record of 23 among men or women.

“Every year it feels better and better just because we’re adding to the legacy,” Biles said. “I feel like I never think of records. I just go out there and do what I came to do, which is compete for the country.”

The U.S. team scored 172.330 points to beat second-place Russia by 5.801 points and win its seventh consecutive team title at an Olympics or world championships.

The reward for winning was a battery-powered medal that lights up when it senses movement. Biles called it “the sickest medal we’ve ever had.”

Biles posted the best individual scores on the vault, balance beam and floor.

“I think if I do the routine that I did tonight I’ll be more than happy” in Thursday’s individual all-around final, she said.

A fall for Sunisa Lee on balance beam in her world championship debut and a fumbled routine from Grace McCallum on the uneven bars left the U.S. with room for improvement, though both were strong on other apparatus.

“It’s just so surreal to come out here and end up on top with the strength of the team that we have, even after having a couple falls out there,” Biles said.

Russia became the first team to get within six points of the U.S. since China at the 2015 world championships, something which pleased Russian gymnast Angelina Melnikova.

“We’re happy that we got second because we can’t battle the Americans just yet, but today the gap was significantly lower than at the last few world championships,” Melnikova said.

Biles said other teams were “most definitely” closing in on the U.S.

“All of the teams have improved their difficulty over the last quad, and I think that’s really exciting to see the strength that they have.”

Italy ended its 69-year wait for a women’s team medal with bronze, as China failed to make the podium for the first time since the 2003 world championships.

China was fourth after a tough day for Liu Tingting, who fell twice on the uneven bars and again on the balance beam.

A fall on the beam mount by Italy’s last gymnast, Elisa Iorio, made for a tense finish but she recovered to score enough to stay ahead of China by 0.536 points.

It was a big recovery for Italy, which qualified in last place for the final.

“The goal for today was just to do better than qualification and how it goes, it goes,” Italian gymnast Giorgia Villa said through a translator.
