(Newport News, VA)  —  An administrator at a Virginia school reportedly failed to act and prevent a six-year-old student from shooting his teacher.  First grade teacher Abby Zwerner was seriously injured after a boy shot her in the chest of her classroom at Richneck Elementary in Newport News back in January.  A letter expressing Zwerner’s intent to sue identifies Assistant Vice Principal Dr. Ebony Parker as the school official who was allegedly told three times that the student was armed and failed to call police, evacuate students, or lock down the school.  The letter also claims Parker knew about the student’s behavioral issues dating back to his time as a kindergarten student, when he allegedly choked a different teacher.

NBC reports that the record-breaking points came during the 20th season of his career in front of a home crowd against the Oklahoma City Thunder. James surpassed a milestone that stood for almost 39 years and was previously held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

With 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter, James broke the record with a fadeaway shot. Following the shot, the crowd erupted, and the game was paused to celebrate James’ achievement. To commemorate the moment, Abdul-Jabbar handed James a basketball on the court and shook his hand.

An emotional James thanked his family, fans and the NBA. “I would never ever in a million years dreamt of this even better than what it is tonight,” LeBron James, via NBC. In 2003, James was the NBA’s number-one pick coming out of high school.

Over his two-decade career, James has averaged about 27 points per game. The four-time league MVP has won four NBA titles with three teams. On January 24, he broke another NBA record, becoming the only player in history to score 40 or more points against every NBA franchise.

 An Ohio-based children’s clothing company is recalling 5,000 children’s robes over a possible fire risk.

An Ohio-based children’s clothing company is recalling 5,000 children’s robes over a possible fire risk.

ChildLikeMe says the 100% polyester fleece hooded robes do not meet federal flammability standards and should be returned immediately for a full refund. The robes were sold exclusively on Amazon between June 2021 and August 2022.

The robes are for children five to twelve years of age and priced at $11-17. If you’ve purchased one of these robes please be advised, immediately take the recalled robes away from the children, destroy the item, and contact ChildLikeMe for a full refund.

According to Consumer Affairs, if the “destroy the robes you should cut them in half and email a photo of the destroyed garment to ChildLikeMe at mtiinns@163.com. Upon receipt of the photo, consumers will be issued a full refund of the purchase price.;

ChildLikeMe and Amazon are contacting all known purchasers directly.

At this time, no injuries have been reported.

Two school districts are meeting with members of their communities to address the growing opiod epidemic.  One meeting being held at High Point High School in Prince George’s County where there have been more than 30 overdoses this school year.  The other, a work session, being held by the Arlington County School Board.  The meeting comes one week after a Wakefield High School 14-year-old died last week.  School systems are sounding the alarm and trying to address the crisis. We talk about what parents need to know.

(Atlanta, GA)  —  Today is National Black HIV-AIDS Awareness Day and the statistics tell an alarming story.  The CDC says while Blacks and African-Americans make up 13-percent of the U.S. population, they account for 40-percent of those with HIV.  Dr. Laura Cheever, AIDS expert at the Health Resources and Services Administration, estimates a quarter-million people know they have HIV in America and aren’t seeking regular medical care.  She also says many Black and African-American clients aren’t taking advantage of prevention options because of stigma and fear.

Tristan Thompson finally broke his silence after the unexpected death of his mother, Andrea, last month. He took to Instagram to share several photos, including one with his ex Khloé Kardashian.

He captioned the post, “Dearest mommy in heaven, It has been one month since you’ve been gone. I’m in disbelief. Im in the deepest part of sorrow and grief.

Andrea Thompson, mother of Tristan died in January 2023, it was confirmed to her cause of death was a heart attack.

He continued, “All I can say is, Im sorry mommy for the wrong decisions Ive [sic] made in my life. Im [sic] sorry for the embarrassment and pain,” he wrote, alluding to his numerous instances of infidelity.

According to healthline.com , “Grief is universal. Many people tend through 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.”  Understanding that it may be too late to share with his mother physically, his desire to apologize gives a sense that he wants to channel his grief in the best way possible.

DC House Fire Kills 2 Women

Deadly fire in NW DC has claimed the lives of two elderly women. Fire officials are still looking for the cause of the blaze.

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, February 7, 2023) – An early morning fire in NW DC has claimed the lives of two elderly women.  DC Fire officials say it took 50 firefighters to bring the blaze under control around 3am Tuesday in the 7200 Block of 8th Street.

It is not clear what started the fire.  But officials say the fire was contained to one room on the 2nd floor of the home.  The name of the victims have not yet been released. Fire Chief John Donnelly reminded residents to check their smoke alarms and to check on elderly neighbors to make sure they are safe.

Two Charged With Conspiring to Destroy MD Energy Plants

Justice Department charges two with conspiracy to damage energy facilities in Baltimore.

(Monday, February 6, 2023) – The U.S. Justice Department has charged two people with conspiracy alleging the pair was preparing a racist inspired plan to shoot multiple electrical substations in Maryland.

The DOJ unveiled the scheme today in announcing the arrests of Sarah Beth Clendaniel of Catonsville, Maryland and Brandon Clint Russell of Orlando, Florida.  Authorities say the plot was driven by ethnically or racially motivated extremist beliefs.

The individuals “conspired and took steps to shoot multiple electrical substations” in the Baltimore area, said U.S. Attorney Maryland Erek Barron.  The announcement was made at a press conference.

Earthquake Kills Thousands In Turkey and Syria

2,300 persons are feared dead after two powerful earthquakes rocked parts of Turkey and Syria. Officials believe the death toll will climb significantly as search and rescue efforts continue.

(Monday, February 6, 2023) – A powerful earthquake rocked Turkey and neighboring Syria early Monday killing over 2,300 persons and injuring thousands of others.  Officials estimate the death toll will likely rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

The 7.8 magnitude quake toppled hundreds of buildings, trapping residents underneath mountains of rubble. The earthquake was centered on Turkey’s southeastern area which sits on top of major fault lines and is frequently rattled by earthquakes.  In 1999, more than 18,000 people were killed when powerful earthquakes hit northwest Turkey.

Hours after the first quake today, a second jolted the area at a 7.5 magnitude about 60 miles away.

“About Damn Time” won Grammy Record of the Year for Lizzo. The artist gave a heartfelt speech about Prince and Beyoncé.

A shocked Lizzo took to the stage and told the audience she didn’t expect to win as she and Adele were just having a good time and “rooting for our friends.”

Lizzo said after Prince died, she dedicated her life to making positive music, something that wasn’t popular at the time in the mainstream.

After thanking her team and fans, she told Beyoncé she had skipped school in the 5th grade to see her perform and said, “You changed my life, you sang that gospel medley and the way you made me feel, I was like, ‘I want to make people feel this way with my music.’ Thank you so much; you clearly are the artist of our lives.”

Lizzo was so excited, her joyful speech amazed fans and the audience.

A couple flying from Israel to Belgium left their baby at the check-in counter after an employee told them the infant couldn’t fly without a ticket. One would think, they knew this before planning their trip.

A couple flying from Israel to Belgium left their baby at the check-in counter after an employee told them the infant couldn’t fly without a ticket. One would think, they knew this before planning their trip.

The incident happened Tuesday at Ben Gurion Airport, where the unidentified couple showed up with tickets for themselves, but not for their baby, says a spokeswoman for Ryanair.

“The couple also arrived late for the flight, once the check-in for the flight was closed,” the spokeswoman says. “The couple left the infant seat with the baby and ran toward the security checks at Terminal One in an attempt to reach the boarding gate for the flight.”

Although the couple boarded the flight, they didn’t actually go anywhere. “The check-in agent at Ben Gurion Airport contacted airport security, who retrieved these passengers,” the spokeswoman says. “And this is now a matter for local police.” It’s unclear whether charges have been filed against the couple.

“First of all, I’d like to thank God, because without God blessing me throughout my career, you know, guiding me on this path. I don’t know where I would’ve been, to be honest with you guys. Thank you for my parents and the sacrifices that they have made for me.” He continues to thank everyone that collectively came together; Briggs recalls his love for football,”I learned the importance of family; your team becomes your family.”

While officially announcing his choice of school live from The Museum D.C., “Without further ado, I’d like to keep my talents at home and be a part of the legacy at Howard University. Go Bison!”

According to FOX5DC, “The 2x Maryland football state champion is taking his talent to Howard University in the fall.”  Late December Briggs mentioned that he received an offer from HU, and on Tuesday the quarterback with a 3.45 GPA officially commit to becoming a Bison.

The dual-threat also plays for the Quince Orchard Cougars basketball team and leads his team to an impressive 28-0 record and back-to-back state championships.

Beyoncé officially announced her Renaissance world tour this morning, February 1. Just a day after Louisiana rapper Lil Wayne announces his, Tha Carter Tour.

Beyoncé released her album Renaissance in July of 2022, with top hits like Cuff It, Break My Soul, and Alien Superstar. Many fans anticipated visuals for this project as Mrs. Carter did with previous projects like Lemonade and BEYONCÉ. Yet nothing was given, just hit songs made into viral dance crazes.

Maybe apart of her plan all along but while fans wait, they can view the dates listed on Beyoncé’s website at Beyonce.com. The “Beyoncé RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR” has a “Citi Verified Fan Presale” page.

Shows in several North American cities between July and September are included on the page. The tour will kick off on May 10th in Stockholm and wrap on September 27th in New Orleans. Currently, Beyoncé’s website states that tickets will be available “soon.”

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, January 31, 2023) – DC police have released the name of the DC government employee who authorities say fatally shot 13-year-old Karon Blake on January 7th.  Police have identified the gunman as 41 year old Jason Lewis of NE, DC.  He’s been charged with 2nd degree murder in the killing of Blake.  Lewis turned himself into police earlier today.

Police Chief Robert Contee held a press conference this morning making the announcement.  The shooting happened around 4am in the Brookland section of the city in the 100 block of Quincy Street, NE.  It brought outrage in the community when initial reports said Karon was shot as he was tampering with cars.  Community leaders and several lawmakers called it vigilante justice by a person more interested in protecting property than children.   Chief Contee confirmed that Karon and several other teens were attempting to break into cars.  But says there was no confrontation between the teen and Lewis prior to the shooting.  “Mr. Lewis exited his resident and fired a shot.  He was standing outside his door.  It appears the first shot was fired at a getaway vehicle.  It appears Karon was trying to make his way back to that vehicle ,” said Contee

Chief Contee says there was no confrontation and no real words exchanged between the teen and Lewis.  Contee says it was video that helped them come to a conclusion to charge Lewis who is said to be an employee in the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation.  He’s expected to make his initial appearance in DC Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.   According to the Washington Post, Lewis’s attorney is Lee Smith who is quoted as saying “the public will see, no crime was committed.”

Police say video from Lewis’s property shows Karon running in front of  Lewis’s condo as Lewis fires.  According to the warrant, the teen can be heard repeatedly yelling, ” I am sorry followed by, Please don’t and No.  I am a kid… I am only 12.”   “Here we have a kid who is dead and shouldn’t be.  Now we have to go through the course of judicial process,” added Contee.

Amazingly Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will make history the moment they step on the field at Super Bowl LVII (57) Sunday, February 12, 2023.

It will mark the first time in NFL history that two Black quarterbacks have faced off in the big game. Mahomes is one of just three Black quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl, along with Russell Wilson and Doug Williams.

If the Kansas City Chiefs win, he will be the first black quarterback to win more than one Super Bowl. Steve McNair, Donovan McNabb, Colin Kaepernick, and Cam Newton have also made Super Bowl appearances. If Philadelphia Eagles win, Jalen Hurts could be the fourth black quarterback to take home the  Vince Lombardi Trophy.

For the community seeing the NFL with two Black quarterbacks in the Super Bowl makes for a great change in the game as we know. The then-Washington Redskins win in 1988, earned Doug Williams the place as the first black quarterback with a Super Bowl trophy. The following wouldn’t be until 2014 Russell Wilson and Mahomes in 2020.

His stepfather, Rodney Wells, said, “Violence will not bring our son back.” Wells asked for peace and explained, “The people that are out there being violent are doing it on their own.”

The New York Post reported from protested Danny Gatewood , 47 “I don’t agree with the family. They call for peaceful protests…but when do we start fighting? When do we take action?”

As a father himself, Gatewood continued, “I pray for the family. But I believe if that happened to my son I wouldn’t be calling for peace.”

Nichols died on January 10, three days after the traffic stop near his mother’s home. Five officers of the Memphis Police Department were fired and, on Thursday, were each indicted with charges of second-degree murder.

Whitney Houston set a chart record almost 40 years ago with her song I Will Always Love You. A classic, as we all know, but now, entertainment singer SZA’s second album SOS is at the top of the Billboard 200 chart for the seventh week in a row.

In the last week, it sold about 111,000 album-equivalent units. Since Whitney Houston’s self-titled debut album Whitney in 1987 featured songs like, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and Didn’t We Almost Have It All,  SOS is the first R&B album to spend its first seven weeks at number one.

When it came out, Whitney was the first R&B album by a woman to go straight to the top of the chart. SZA’s SOS is the first album to spend seven consecutive weeks at number one since the Encanto soundtrack in March 2022, and it is the first female album to spend its first seven weeks at number one since Adele’s 25 in 2016.

Last Spring, Netflix said it intended to figure out a way to block password sharing with different households. ‘USA Today’ reports that the streamer plans to implement that change “more broadly later in Q1.”

Netflix previously conducted a pilot program in Latin American countries where a “sub-account” could be added for $3 a month. From our experience in Latin America, we expect some cancel reaction in each market when we roll out paid sharing, which impacts near-term member growth, Netflix, via letter to shareholders.

But as borrower households begin to activate their own standalone accounts and extra member accounts are added, we expect to see improved overall revenue, Netflix, via letter to shareholders. To detect password sharing, ‘USA Today’ says Netflix “uses IP addresses, device IDs and account activity.”

If a device is often used outside of a household, Netflix will ask for that device to be verified. The change in sharing accounts comes a year after Netflix raised the price of its basic plan from $8.99 a month to $9.99 a month. The company also rolled out a $6.99 monthly plan with advertisements.

The former University of Florida quarterback recruit who gained notoriety for rhyming the n-word was offered a new scholarship offer from an HBCU.

Marcus Stokes revealed on Tuesday (January 24) that Albany State University had offered him a scholarship.  In case you missed it, Stokes lost his scholarship to the University of Florida in November due to posting a video online in which he used the n-word while rapping.

He tweets,” Blessed to receive my first HBCU offer to play at Albany State University!”

Later, the four-star recruit expressed regret for his behavior, calling it “hurtful and offensive to many people,” but that wasn’t enough, and his scholarship was finally withdrawn. Stokes, one of the nation’s greatest high school quarterbacks, has led Nease High School for several seasons.

Stokes hasn’t committed at this moment. According to 247Sports, he is still shopping around and planning to West Florida. He is ranked the 24th quarterback per 247Sports for the class of 2023.

(Washington, DC) — D.C. lawmakers are looking to put a lid on noise in certain neighborhoods in the District. Council is set to consider the Vehicular Noise Reduction Act which is aimed at curtailing noise on D.C. streets. The law would help identify and repair noisy vehicles while creating a noise camera program to fine offenders. The proposed legislation would place two noise reduction cameras in each ward in the District, each with signage alerting drivers to the devices. The measure proposes test driving the cameras for a few years to see how effective they are in reducing noise on D.C. streets.

(Memphis, TN) — The five former Memphis police officers involved in the violent arrest of Tyre Nichols are facing murder charges. Nichols, a Black man, died in the hospital days after a January 7th traffic stop involving the police officers, who are also Black. Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy called the event a tragedy. He said the officers are behind bars and face second-degree murder and other charges. Mulroy said the body-cam footage of the arrest will be released Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Memphis police chief pleaded for calm before the expected release of body-cam footage showing Nichols’ arrest.

Can that happen?” He continued, “The final show that we are ever going to do is going to be at Madison Square Garden in April.” He added, “It’s going to be the last episode of the documentary we’re doing.

Run-D.M.C.’s last show ever. ‘Cause, it’s time for Run to go be Paul McCartney and me to be John Lennon. We done did what we could do.” He also shared that after the killing of Jam Master Jay, the iconic group could never be whole again.

Back in 1983 when the group was founded, the members were Joseph Simmons (RUN), Darryl McDaniels (DMC) and Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay). The group made classics throughout the 80s-90s.

In October 2002, Jam Master Jay was murdered in his Queens studio. The suspects, Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Tinard Washington have recently been indicted and arrested in 2020. Jay was 37 years-old.

An African American studies course that’s been banned in Florida is being revised.  The College Board says they’ll release the new advanced placement course on February 1st.  The original course was blocked by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who claimed it was “contrary to Florida’s Anti-Woke Act.”
Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump and members of the Florida legislature’s Black caucus announced a lawsuit against the state’s decision to reject the Advanced placement course. What’s going on here?  What’s behind the push back on Black cultural and educational issues in Florida?

(Washington, DC) — The U.S. will send tanks to Ukraine to aid in its war against Russia. President Biden announced the U.S. will provide Kyiv 31 M1-Abrams tanks, which are among the most powerful in the world. Biden said Ukrainian forces will need them to counter Russia’s evolving tactics. The U.S. will soon start training Ukrainian troops to operate the tanks, which Biden says will “take some time.” This, as Germany, France, and the U.K. have also agreed to send tanks to Ukraine. Biden said the U.S. and its European allies are fully united. The President also emphasized there will be no “offensive” threat to Russia, but the move will enable Ukraine to take back its territory from Russia.

Montgomery County Looking For Suspects Who Posed As Police

The suspects were reportedly armed when they broke into the home.

(Montgomery County, MD) — Montgomery County officials are searching for three people who broke into a Germantown residence and initially posed as police officers. The suspects were reportedly armed when they broke into the home, shouted they were Montgomery County police, and demanded cash and property. A fight then broke out and one of the four victims was hit in the back of the head, causing minor injuries. The suspects fled without money or property. As they were leaving, the same man who was struck allegedly chased the suspects down a stairwell, and one of the suspects fired a single shot. The man was not struck.

Anyone with information regarding these suspects or this crime is asked to please contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).

There is a reward of up to $10,000 being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. They’ve address that callers can remain anonymous.

During the year’s Super Bowl halftime performance, Abbott Elementary actress Sheryl Lee Ralph will perform the Black National Anthem.

The actress showed off her vocal chops during her acceptance speech after winning an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.  Ralph will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

She shared her excitement about the performance on Instagram, writing, “Come on now. Don’t you ever give up on you baby! I’ll be singing ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ at Super Bowl LVII. See you there.” Actress Wendy Raquel Robinson, quoting Ralph’s acceptance speech in a comment, “This is what believing looks like.”

Joining the Dreamgirl for the preshow will be the smooth sounds of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds performing “America the Beautiful.” Country singer, Chris Stapleton will sing the “National Anthem”, providing American Sign Language (ASL) will be Oscar award winner Troy Kotsur.

Classified Documents Found At Pence’s Home

Separate investigations are happening into classified documents found at the residencies of President Biden and former President Trump.

(Washington, DC) — Classified documents have been found at former Vice President Pence’s Indiana home. That’s according to CNN which cited multiple sources familiar with the manner. The outlet said a lawyer for Pence discovered around a dozen documents labeled as classified. The Department of Justice and FBI have launched a probe into how the documents wound up at Pence’s home. The discovery comes as separate investigations are happening into classified documents found at the residencies of President Biden and former President Trump.

The high price of eggs and the looming shortage is because an unprecedented epidemic of highly virulent avian influenza has killed millions of egg-laying chickens nationwide.

The biggest bird flu pandemic in US history killed approximately 60 million chickens by 2022. This extremely contagious avian flu virus kills 90 to 100 percent of hens within 48 hours. Health officials have preemptively killed millions of birds due to its ferocity.

Some states have taken a bigger hit than others, like California and Colorado have been hit due to production and California’s reliance on cage-free chickens to adhere to Prop. 12. Some people are paying up to $7.37 per dozen.

Although no word on how long this egg spike will continue, but according to Readers Digest, these things won’t be pricy in 2023:

  • Nonessential Items
