Serena Williams Admits She Didn’t Feel A Connection With Daughter While Pregnant

In a personal essay for Elle, tennis star Serena Williams penned an account of her near-death birthing experience and revealed that she initially didn’t form a connection with her daughter, now 4, until after she gave birth.

“I was nervous about meeting my baby. Throughout my pregnancy, I’d never felt a connection with her,” Williams wrote. “While I loved being pregnant, I didn’t have that amazing ‘Oh my God,’ this is my baby moment, ever. It’s something people don’t usually talk about, because we’re supposed to be in love from the first second.”

“Yes, I was a lioness who would protect her baby at any cost, but I wasn’t gushing over her,” she continued. “I kept waiting to feel like I knew her during pregnancy, but the feeling never came. Some of my mom friends told me they didn’t feel the connection in the womb either, which made me feel better, but still, I longed for it.”

As reported by People, Williams’ birth experience wasn’t an easy one. The tennis champion was rushed into an emergency cesarean section, and after the delivery, a coughing fit made her wound reopen and led doctors to discover multiple, life-threatening blood clots in her body.

Williams said the connection finally came after giving birth to Olympia in September 2017.

“When I finally saw her — and I just knew it was going to be a girl, that was one thing I knew about her before we even had it confirmed — I loved her right away,” Williams wrote in her essay. “It wasn’t exactly instantaneous, but it was there, and from that seed, it grew. I couldn’t stop staring at her, my Olympia.”

“Despite my body’s wreckage—and the fact that I couldn’t get in much breastfeeding—connecting with Olympia at long last was amazing; it was both the reward and the validation for all I’d been through,” she told Elle. “I went from not being able to really imagine her in the womb to us being completely inseparable. I still feel like I have to be around her for every day of her life, as much as possible. I’m anxious when I’m not around her. Honestly, it’s a little much.”

“Don’t Mute DC” Three Years Later

Where is the “Don’t Mute DC” movement now?

It is the sound that is so DC.  TheGo-Go syncopated beat, born and raised in Chocolate City.  But it was also the rallying cry for a cultural protest three years ago named “Don’t Mute DC”, after new-comers to the quickly gentrifying U-Street corridor complained about local business playing it.  There is a new battle brew in the district now.  What is it and where is the “Don’t Mute DC” movement now?

Will Smith Banned From Academy For Ten Years

“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said in a statement.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The motion picture academy on Friday banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars or any other academy event for 10 years following his slap of Chris Rock at the Academy Awards.

The move comes after a meeting of the academy’s Board of Governors to discuss a response to Smith’s actions.

“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage,” the academy said in a statement.

Smith pre-preemptively resigned from the academy last week during the run-up to the meeting and said he would accept any punishment the academy handed down.

“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said in a statement.

The academy also apologized for its handling of the situation and allowing Smith to stay and accept his best actor award for “King Richard.”

“During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry,” the academy said. “This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented. ”

In a statement in the days following the Oscars, the academy said Smith was asked to leave the ceremony but refused.

But it’s not clear how the message was delivered to Smith or what form it took, and several media outlets reported that he was never formally told to leave the Dolby Theatre. The Los Angeles Times reported in a story Thursday that Oscars producer Will Packer told Smith: “Officially, we don’t want you to leave. We want you to stay.”

The ban means Smith will not be presenting one of the major awards at next year’s Oscars, as is tradition for the best actor winner.

The academy in its Friday statement also expressed “deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”

The academy’s statement did not address whether Smith could be nominated for Oscars during his 10-year ban. Nor did it take any action to revoke Smith’s Academy Award.

The academy has not revoked Oscars from expelled members Harvey Weinstein or Roman Polanski.

Jackson Confirmed As First Black Female High Court Justice

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court on Thursday, shattering a historic barrier by securing her place as the first Black female justice and giving President Joe Biden a bipartisan endorsement for his effort to diversify the court.

Jackson, a 51 year-old appeals court judge with nine years experience on the federal bench, was confirmed 53-47, mostly along party lines but with three Republican votes. Presiding was Vice President Kamala Harris, also the first Black woman to reach that high office.

Jackson will take her seat when Justice Stephen Breyerretires this summer, solidifying the liberal wing of the 6-3 conservative-dominated court. She joined Biden at the White House to watch the vote, embracing as it came in.

During the four days of Senate hearings last month, Jackson spoke of her parents’ struggles through racial segregation and said her “path was clearer” than theirs as a Black American after the enactment of civil rights laws. She attended Harvard University, served as a public defender, worked at a private law firm and was appointed as a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

Conditions Affecting Black Women This National Minority Health Month

As reported by Essence, April is National Minority Health Month, a time of year dedicated to boosting awareness around the health disparities and illnesses that disproportionately impact individuals of racial and ethnic minority groups.

By Brooks Welch

As reported by Essence, April is National Minority Health Month, a time of year dedicated to boosting awareness around the health disparities and illnesses that disproportionately impact individuals of racial and ethnic minority groups.

The month’s origins date back to 1915, when Booker T. Washington established National Negro Health Week. There are several often overlooked or most pressing health conditions and diseases that impact Black women and our community at large. Here’s a list compiled by Essence:

Heart Disease

Currently, heart disease is the leading cause of death for Black women in the U.S. and according to cardiologist, Dr. LaPrincess Brewer, this is a direct result of the lack of awareness around the condition, “Each year, more African American women die from heart disease than breast cancer, lung cancer and strokes combined, which makes heart disease the No. 1 killer of African American women in our nation,” she shared in a Mayo Clinic report. “However, studies have also revealed that less than half of African American women are aware that heart disease is their No. 1 cause of death.”

Heart disease is shown to come in many forms such as clogged arteries, heart failure and stroke, which can be linked to other health factors like obesity, hypertension and diabetes that can increase the risk of developing these conditions.

Dr. Brewer also shared in the study how preexisting health disparities that impact the Black community reflect the source of these issues. “Unfortunately, African American women are faced with an overwhelmingly high burden of negative social determinants of health, and these include chronic stress related to factors like food insecurity, systemic racism, the wealth gap, and socioeconomically disenfranchised communities. These challenges really prevent African American women from following a healthy lifestyle and controlling many of the heart disease risk factors.”

Cancer

In the U.S., Black Americans are reported by the Office of Minority Health Resource Center to have the highest “mortality rate of any racial and ethnic group for all cancers combined and for most major cancers.” Between 2014 and 2018, studies showed that while Black American women were just as likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer to non-Hispanic white women, they are almost 40 percent more likely to die from breast cancer, as compared to non-Hispanic white women. While these numbers are jarring, they speak to a wider issue in the disparities that result in health outcomes from one group of people to another.

Suicide

In 2019, suicide became the second leading cause of death for Black Americans, ages 15 to 24, with socioeconomic factors such as poverty levels, which disproportionately impact the mental well-being of Black women and youth. As we’ve seen from the untimely passing of public figures like Miss USA 2019, Cheslie Kryst, the space for dialogue around mental health is still crucial.

A 2021 research study found that there was a 30 percent increase in the suicide rates among Black people in the U.S., while rates among white people saw a decline in that same time period.

According to a 2021 study by the CDC, rates of anxiety and depression among people of color increased from 2020 to 2021. The data found that between January and February 2021, nearly 45 percent of the Black participants reported having experienced episodes of depression or anxiety.

Diabetes

More than 37 million Americans live with diabetes and studies have found that Black women are more often impacted by type 2 diabetes than any other racial group. Diabetes had been linked to other health complications such as kidney damage, heart disease, and can worsen the symptoms of COVID-19.

A study by The Black Women’s Health Imperative Agenda found that Black adults “are 60% more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to be diagnosed with diabetes — and twice as likely to die of the condition.”

While type 2 diabetes is a common condition among Black women, we can be comforted by the fact that with proper measures, exercise and healthy eating, it can be prevented. Dr. Angela Ford, Chief Programs Officer at the Black Women’s Health Imperative, says they can help. “There are thousands of Black women who can actually make the necessary changes to prevent [type 2 diabetes] and potentially save their lives if they have access to the opportunity, resources, and support offered through our lifestyle change program,” she tells ESSENCE. Although these health conditions may run in our families and can be attached to generations of going undiagnosed, Dr. Ford assures women that even if diabetes is a part of one’s family health history, it doesn’t have to be your destiny.

How to take action and advocate for your health.

Tammy Boyd, MPH, JD, Chief Policy Officer and Counsel for the Black Women’s Health Imperative shares that closing the gap between health disparities comes through presenting Black women with the full realm of options that are available to them. “There still needs to be a lot of education and awareness about participating in clinical trials and why it’s important for us to do that,” she tells ESSENCE. “A lot of times, we hear about these studies out there and [Black women] aren’t even offered participation in clinical trials for proper treatment options. But a lot of doctors haven’t been pushed to empower Black women to ask, ‘what is the complete tip continuum of health options for me?’”

Additionally, while it’s important for patients to feel empowered to advocate for themselves, doctors must also have the proper education on how to engage, speak to, and care for their Black patients given their cultural backgrounds in order to combat implicit biases.

“For doctors, how do you engage with a multicultural community?” Boyd asks. “Make sure that we have health providers who look like the people who actually come into your office and can speak to them in a way that they understand.”

National Tax Day Is Around The Corner!

National Tax Day is inevitable, but it always seems to creep up on you. It’s around the corner, on April 18, and here’s what you need to know!

April 18th is the deadline to file and pay your income taxes for most individuals! Not doing so could result in penalties and interest on the amount owed.

“Taxpayers should file their tax return by the deadline even if they cannot pay their full tax bill. Taxpayers who owe tax and don’t file on time, may be charged a failure-to-file penalty. This penalty is usually five percent of the tax owed for each month, or part of a month that the tax return is late, up to 25%,” the IRS says.

However, it is possible to request a filing extension ahead of the April 18th date, according to the IRS website. When you’re ready to file, you may be looking for a reputable tax preparer. Be sure to check the prepares reputation with the Better Business Bureau, ask about fees upfront and be skeptical of a preparer claiming to get you a larger than usual amount.

Once you file, stay alert for scammers fishing to steal your personal information.

An IRS tip sheet reminds Americans that the IRS will never:

  • Send text messages or contact people through social media to get personal information or collect a tax debt.
  • Demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer.
  • Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.
  • Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.
  • Call unexpectedly about a tax refund.

CBS Money Watch analyst Jill Schlesinger also recently shared tips for those who have yet to file. Schlesinger suggested that people file electronically instead of on paper to save time. If filing an extension, Schlesinger said that people should be looking for Form 4868 at IRS.gov. This will give people a chance to extend their time to October 17.

Kandi’s Ex Doesn’t Want To Pay Back Child Support Due To Entrepreneur’s Success

The father of Kandi Burruss’ daughter Riley, Russell ‘Block’ Spencer, recently spoke to Vlad TV about his relationship with his daughter.

By Brooks Welch

The father of Kandi Burruss‘ daughter Riley, Russell ‘Block’ Spencer, recently spoke to Vlad TV about his relationship with his daughter.

“Every last one of my kids lives with me from when they’re born until they graduate except Kandi’s [daughter],” Block explained.

He continued, “I’ve got an accomplished name, [and I gave my kids who lived with me] a lot of stuff. And I think it’s a lot of jealousy because Riley wasn’t in that situation because her mom put me on child support.”

Block didn’t seem to understand why Burruss wanted child support for Riley because, according to him, her net worth exceeds his.

Kandi responded with an Instagram story that addressed him directly.

“I don’t care how well I’m doing, I still need that money you owe me,” Burruss wrote. “Don’t BLOCK your blessings not by doing right by your children.”

As reported by Bravo, during the April 25 episode of ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta,’ Kandi Burruss offered an update on where things stand with Riley Burruss’ dad, Russell “Block” Spencer. The RHOA cast member confirmed that she had won her child custody case involving Riley’s dad, which was first discussed at the beginning of the season.

“They basically say he got to pay his back child support, so they’re giving him some time to give a lump sum now, and then he has to start paying the monthly back,” she said during Part 1 of the Season 13 reunion, which aired Sunday.

In response to fans who wondered why she pursued the case, she added, “Riley wanted it. She said that’s her money, and it was owed to her. It’s not like I was going to get new money or something.”

In a tweet released by Kandi last year, she responded to concerns about who the child support belonged to.

New Research Reveals Women Outearning Men

According to a new finding by the Pew Research Center, Women in the United States continue to earn less than men, on average. Among full-time, year-round workers in 2019, women’s median annual earnings were 82% those of men.

By Brooks Welch

According to a new finding by the Pew Research Center, Women in the United States continue to earn less than men, on average. Among full-time, year-round workers in 2019, women’s median annual earnings were 82% those of men.

The New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles metropolitan areas are among the cities where young women are earning the most relative to young men. In both the New York and Washington metro areas, young women earn 102% of what young men earn when examining median annual earnings among full-time, year-round workers.

More cities, as reported by Essenceinclude Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA, Barnstable Town, MA, Bremerton-Silverdale, WA, Champaign-Urbana, IL, Chattanooga, TN-GA, Erie, PA, Flagstaff, AZ, Gainesville, FL, Iowa City, IA, Lebanon, PA, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL, Morgantown, WV, Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island, FL, New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA, Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, CA, Richmond, VA, Sacramento–Roseville–Arden-Arcade, CA and San Angelo, TX.

There’s also acknowledgment in the report that generational norms also play a role in the wage gap shift as well. Researchers noted that Gen-Z women are more transparent about their salaries with peers, so women aren’t starting from ground zero when negotiating pay.

NPR recently reported that earlier this year, the Biden administration said it was set on ending the gender pay gap for federal workers and contractors, with the president issuing an executive order preventing federal agencies from asking about an applicant’s salary history in the process.

“Pay transparency creates accountability and accountability, well that drives progress,” said Vice President Harris about the order, adding that it will help “build a more fair, more efficient, and more equitable economy.”

Biden Announces Extension to Student Loan Repayment

The Biden administration on Wednesday announced that it will extend the pause on federal student loan payments to August 31, 2022, reports Forbes.

By Brooks Welch

The Biden administration on Wednesday announced that it will extend the pause on federal student loan payments to August 31, 2022, reports Forbes.

According to Fox Business, forbearance was previously set to expire May 1, which means about 41 million borrowers will have an additional four months to financially prepare for repayment.

“If loan payments were to resume on schedule in May, analysis of recent data from the Federal Reserve suggests that millions of student loan borrowers would face significant economic hardship, and delinquencies and defaults could threaten Americans’ financial stability,” Biden said.

Biden promised that there would be “additional flexibilities and support for all borrowers” when repayment does resume, and he said that the extension of the payment pause through August would allow the Department of Education to “continue improving student loan programs.” He did not specifically mention student loan forgiveness. However, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain recently said that Biden would explore “executive action student debt forgiveness” before monthly payments resume.

As advised by Fox Business, here’s how you can prepare for the end of forbearance:

  • Get in touch with your student loan servicer. Millions of borrowers have had their loan balances transferred to a new servicer during the forbearance period. Reach out to your loan servicer for more information about your payment due date, monthly payment amount, remaining loan balance and current interest rate.
  • Re-enroll in automatic payments. Borrowers who have been moved to a new servicer will need to re-enroll in autopay before forbearance expires to avoid missing their first payment. Federal Student Aid (FSA) offers information on how to sign up for automatic payments through your loan servicer.
  • Sign up for an income-driven repayment plan (IDR). Federal student loan borrowers may be able to limit their monthly payment to between 10% and 20% of their disposable income through an IDR plan. After a period of 20 or 25 years of making payments, the remainder of your student loan debt will be discharged.
  • Apply for additional federal deferment. The Education Department offers several federal student loan deferment programs that allow borrowers to suspend their loan payments for up to 36 months, depending on eligibility requirements. However, interest may accrue during deferment, which can add to the total cost of borrowing.
  • Consider student loan refinancing. Refinancing to a private loan at a lower interest rate may help you reduce your monthly payments, get out of debt faster and save money over the life of the loan. A Credible analysis found that well-qualified borrowers who refinanced to a longer-term student loan were able to save more than $250 per month, on average.

Cardi B Wins Order For Tasha K To Delete Videos Defaming Her

Rapper Cardi B has won a $4 million defamation verdict against the Georgia-based YouTuber Tasha K.

By Brooks Welch

Rapper Cardi B has won a $4 million defamation verdict against the Georgia-based YouTuber Tasha K. The order requires her to pull down 21 videos within the next five days, and to forever avoid certain statements, reports Billboard.

Tasha Kebe runs the YouTube channel, “UnWine With Tasha K,” with over 1 million followers. She also hosts the celebrity drama and gossip, the Wino Gang Podcast.

The outlet also reported that the banned statements include that “Cardi B had prostituted herself and that she has herpes, among several others.”

According to an earlier article from Billboard, Cardi said on the stand that she felt “suicidal” from the videos and that  “only an evil person could do that s—.”

According to Vibe, In 2019, Cardi filed a lawsuit against Tasha K for libel, defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress due to the YouTuber spreading lies about Cardi B’s personal life in her content. In January, a federal judge sided with Cardi in her suit, awarding the rapper more than $2.5 million in damages and another $1.3 million in legal fees.

Tasha has already filed an appeal of the verdict to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. If her appeal is granted, she will be able to keep all of her content online and be able to comment on Cardi publicly.

As reported by Yahoo!, Cardi’s legal victory comes days ahead of her latest milestone, which is becoming the first female rapper to have an album remain on the Billboard 200 chart for four consecutive years. Her debut album, ‘Invasion of Privacy,’ was released on April 6, 2018, with its four-year anniversary falling on Wednesday (April 6).

Black Lives Matter Founder Bought $6 Million Mansion With Donations

By Brooks Welch

As reported by New York Magazine, Black Lives Matter Movement leaders Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Melina Abdullah recorded a video last June outside of their $6 million mansion.

Their 2020 purchase was supposed to remain a secret despite being featured as the setting for a video series. The Post reported that the property was purchased in October 2020 with funds that had been donated to the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation.

The home is said to be “6,500-square-foot spread with more than six bedrooms and bathrooms, fireplaces, a pool and parking for more than 20 cars,” according to a real estate listing cited by The Post.

Cullors, who resigned as executive director in May, said the coverage of their extravagance were “right-wing media attacks” because the organization is “threatening the establishment.”[W]e’re threatening white supremacy,” Cullons said to The Post. Cullors resigned after receiving criticism over buying three homes in the Los Angeles area and another outside Atlanta.

New York Magazine asked the organization for comment about the $6 million purchase. After receiving the email asking, BLM officials reportedly circulated internal emails ranging from ‘Can we kill the story?’ to, ‘Our angle – needs to be to deflate ownership of the property,’ the magazine reported.

The organization announced a fellowship on April 2 and notified New York Magazine in an email the day before that the house AKA the “Campus” was bought ‘with the intention for it to serve as housing and studio space for recipients of the Black Joy Creators Fellowship.’

In February, the foundation was hit with a 60 day notice by the Department of Justice “asserting that members could be held personally liable if they fail to disclose financial records about the charity’s $60 million in donations within the next 60 days,” reports the Daily Mail.

The heat is turning up for BLM to practice financial transparency after a record of shady donations to foundations that are closely associated with leaders of the organization. “The organization donated hundreds of thousands to the nonprofits which then made payments to Cullors and her business partners,” the Daily Mail also reported.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker Got Hitched In Vegas?

The inseparable couple, television personality Kourtney Kardashian and artist Travis Barker pretended to get hitched after the Grammys held in Las Vegas on Sunday.

By Brooks Welch

The inseparable couple, television personality Kourtney Kardashian and artist Travis Barker pretended to get hitched after the Grammys held in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Although there are speculations about if the marriage is legal, TMZ confirmed that a source close to Travis and Kourtney told the outlet they didn’t have a marriage license, which wouldn’t make it legal.

According to People, the pair walked into One Love Wedding Chapel at 1:45am on Monday, still dressed in Grammy Award looks.

“I didn’t know who it was until they pulled up,” One Love Wedding Chapel owner Marty Frierson told People. I advertise as 24-hours but they wanted to make sure I was still there. They paid and they requested Elvis Presley, that was mandatory. I called back 5 minutes later and was like, I got an Elvis, and there they were,” he said.

As detailed by Yahoo!, the newlyweds paid in advance and requested that owner Marty Frierson secure an Elvis impersonator to officiate. They also brought their own photographer and didn’t allow the venue to photograph them.

Frierson said the ceremony lasted about 30 minutes.

TMZ reported that Travis popped the question back in October at a beachside hotel in Montecito, CA. Once the pair are married, it will be Kourtney’s first marriage and Travis’ third.

White House To Extend Student Loan Pause

Student loan payments were scheduled to resume May 1 after being halted since early in the pandemic.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration plans to freeze federal student loan payments through Aug. 31, extending a moratorium that has allowed millions of Americans to postpone payments during the coronavirus pandemic, according to an administration official familiar with the White House’s decision-making.

Student loan payments were scheduled to resume May 1 after being halted since early in the pandemic. But following calls from Democrats in Congress, the White House plans to give borrowers additional time to prepare for payments.

The action applies to more than 43 million Americans who owe a combined $1.6 trillion in student debt held by the federal government, according to the latest data from the Education Department. That includes more than 7 million borrowers who have defaulted on student loans, meaning they are at least 270 days late on payments.

Borrowers will not be asked to make payments until after Aug. 31, and interest rates are expected to remain at 0% during that period

There have been James Bond rumors swirling around with Idris Elba’s name for years.

While Idris has expressed a desire to play the iconic character, he says that ship may have sailed off without him.

“I am 50 this year. Let’s say you sign up for three films-nobody wants to see Bond giving chase or beating up guys when he is 60. I am probably too old to take on the role now,” the actor said.

Do you agree or disagree that Idris Elba is too old to play James Bond?

Mo’Nique & Lee Daniels Publicly Make Amends After Decades of Conflict

“I am so sorry for hurting you in any way that I did,” he said.

By Brooks Welch

Actress Mo’Nique and director Lee Daniels‘ longstanding and public feud has been squashed after 13 years.

In a video posted to Twitter, Daniels joined Mo’Nique on stage Friday night during her comedy show at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island, New York, as reported by NBC.

“I am so sorry for hurting you in any way that I did,” he said.

“She was my best friend,” he continued, addressing the crowd. “My best friend. Y’all think that ‘Precious’ was just … that was God working through both of us. And we gonna f—ing do it again. I love you. I love you. I love you.”

“I love you,” Mo’Nique responded.

The two were seen embracing one another in a photo posted on Mo’Nique’s Instagram with the caption, “NO CAPTION NEEDED I LOVE US 4REAL”

As reported in an exclusive from Deadline, the ‘Precious’ actress who won an Oscar for her role, accused Daniels, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry of “blackballing” her because she would not promote the film during awards season. They denied blackballing her, but sources said the actress and the director didn’t speak for 13 years because of the disagreement.

The feud became more intense once Mo’Nique separately filed a lawsuit in 2019 against Daniels. She charged him of racial and gender discrimination for trying to drastically underpay her for a stand-up special after offering other stars, like Amy Schumer, tens of millions of dollars.

After not speaking to one another for over a decade, the two will make magic again for Netflix film ‘Demon House.’ Mo’Nique will replace Octavia Spencer  in the exorcism film due to a scheduling conflict with her upcoming project with Apple+ show ‘Truth Be Told.’

Mo’Nique will play the role of a social worker who helps a family through a series of exorcisms. The movie will also star Andra Day, Glenn Close, Caleb McLaughlin and Aunjanue Ellis.

TV personality, actor, singer, and entrepreneur Ray J is launching a digital network.

By Brooks Welch

TV personality, actor, singer, and entrepreneur Ray J is launching a digital network.

Specific details about the platform haven’t been reported, however it’s been clarified that the digital network will offer original content.

This is a development that further establishes the entrepreneur in the tech space.

In an exclusive interview with Afrotech in 2021, Ray J spoke about his earbud brand RAYCON, which he showed off during the Super Bowl in an Instagram video.

“Three years ago, the earbud business wasn’t as booming as it is now,” Ray J said. “But now, it’s on fire. And I think our price point is what says it all. People are paying way too much for earbuds — they’re overpriced. When RAYCON came in with our prices, and our styles, I think we set ourselves apart from all the competition.”

He also founded an electronics company called Raytroniks and began shipping an electric bike called the Scoot-E-Bike in 2016, as reported by Venture Beat.

Sources of the Jasmine Brand report that the entertainer is already filming content for his upcoming network.

Kanye Agrees To Go Away ‘To Get Help’

Rapper Kanye West has agreed to stop harassing ex-wife Kim Kardashian.

By Brooks Welch

Rapper Kanye West has agreed to stop harassing ex-wife Kim Kardashian.

A source told Entertainment News that West has informed Kardashian that he’s “going away to get help” and agreed to stop harassing her and cyber bullying her boyfriend, Pete Davidson.

The source also said, “for the sake of their kids, Kanye told Kim he’s not making any public appearances or inflammatory social media statements, and he will go away somewhere to get better.”

As reported by Screen Rant, West’s social media meltdowns of cyberbullying Davidson, attacking Kim’s parenting, and insulting comedian Trevor Noah led to his Instagram account was shut down for 24 hours, a “fair punishment” from Kim’s perspective. Kanye’s 2022 Grammy Awards appearance was also canceled as a result of his nonstop cyberbullying.

Kim has reached a “breaking point” and publicly released a statement about the way Kanye was hurting their family.

“Kanye’s constant attacks on me in interviews and on social media is actually more hurtful than any TikTok North might create,” wrote Kardashian in an Instagram story addressing Kanye being displeased with their oldest child creating a TikTok account with Kim’s supervision.

“As the parent who is the main provider and caregiver for our children, I am doing my best to protect our daughter while also allowing her to express her creativity in the medium that she wishes with adult supervision — because it brings her so much happiness,” the statement continued. “Divorce is difficult enough on our children and Kanye’s obsession with trying to control and manipulate our situation so negatively and publicly is only causing further pain for all.”

Yahoo! spoke to Kanye’s newly hired head of media and partnerships, Jason Lee of Hollywood Unlocked, who issued  a statement of denial.

“Ye monitors all headlines pertaining to him and his family daily. Most all are being fed to media by ‘sources close to the Kardashians,’ which have been creating a false narrative that not only is untrue but further compromises his goal of creating a healthy environment for the beautiful children he shares with Kim,” he said.

He continued, “[Kanye]’s been focused on taking care of himself, being a present and loving father and a creative genius well before all the false headlines we’ve seen as recent. … If you don’t hear it from his mouth, read it from his social media, or get it from a press release he approved it’s simply false,” Lee said.

Kim and Kanye married in 2014, Kim filed for divorce in 2021. They have four children together.

‘Bad Boys 4’ Release Postponed Due to Oscars Slap

Consequences continue to unfold for actor Will Smith  after his public attack on Chris Rock during the Oscars.

By Brooks Welch

Consequences continue to unfold for actor Will Smith  after his public attack on Chris Rock during the Oscars.

According to Vulture, Smith has made several apologies: one while onstage accepting his Oscar and one afterward to Chris Rock via Instagram. The most recent being his resignation from the Academy.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, Smith said in a statement, “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” the actor said. “The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

The Academy’s president David Rubin responded to Smith’s statement by saying, “We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.”

According to THR, Smith has responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice and “will fully accept any and all consequences” for his conduct.

However, actions are still being taken from the production companies and distributors of his upcoming projects.

“Netflix has slowed development on its upcoming action-thriller “Fast and Loose,” which Will Smith has been attached to star in,” reports Variety.

‘Fast and Loose’ was to tell the story of a crime boss who loses his memory after an attack. Piecing together clues, he discovers that he has led a double identity as a wealthy kingpin and a broke CIA agent. (via The Hollywood Reporter)

‘Bad Boys 4’ had been in “active development,” The Hollywood Reporter also reported. Smith received 40 pages of the script before the Oscars, but the production will now pause.

Apple+ also had a project with Smith titled ‘Emancipation’ in post-production. The streaming service planned to have the movie released this year, but now the release date is unknown.

Vigil To Be Held At MLK Jr. Memorial In DC

King was assassinated 54 years ago today in Memphis, Tennessee.

(Washington, DC) — A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC. The vigil is being held on the 54th anniversary of Reverend King’s murder. King was assassinated while standing on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis in 1968. The civil rights leader was in Memphis to support striking African-American sanitation workers.
