There have been James Bond rumors swirling around with Idris Elba’s name for years.

While Idris has expressed a desire to play the iconic character, he says that ship may have sailed off without him.

“I am 50 this year. Let’s say you sign up for three films-nobody wants to see Bond giving chase or beating up guys when he is 60. I am probably too old to take on the role now,” the actor said.

Do you agree or disagree that Idris Elba is too old to play James Bond?

Mo’Nique & Lee Daniels Publicly Make Amends After Decades of Conflict

“I am so sorry for hurting you in any way that I did,” he said.

By Brooks Welch

Actress Mo’Nique and director Lee Daniels‘ longstanding and public feud has been squashed after 13 years.

In a video posted to Twitter, Daniels joined Mo’Nique on stage Friday night during her comedy show at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island, New York, as reported by NBC.

“I am so sorry for hurting you in any way that I did,” he said.

“She was my best friend,” he continued, addressing the crowd. “My best friend. Y’all think that ‘Precious’ was just … that was God working through both of us. And we gonna f—ing do it again. I love you. I love you. I love you.”

“I love you,” Mo’Nique responded.

The two were seen embracing one another in a photo posted on Mo’Nique’s Instagram with the caption, “NO CAPTION NEEDED I LOVE US 4REAL”

As reported in an exclusive from Deadline, the ‘Precious’ actress who won an Oscar for her role, accused Daniels, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry of “blackballing” her because she would not promote the film during awards season. They denied blackballing her, but sources said the actress and the director didn’t speak for 13 years because of the disagreement.

The feud became more intense once Mo’Nique separately filed a lawsuit in 2019 against Daniels. She charged him of racial and gender discrimination for trying to drastically underpay her for a stand-up special after offering other stars, like Amy Schumer, tens of millions of dollars.

After not speaking to one another for over a decade, the two will make magic again for Netflix film ‘Demon House.’ Mo’Nique will replace Octavia Spencer  in the exorcism film due to a scheduling conflict with her upcoming project with Apple+ show ‘Truth Be Told.’

Mo’Nique will play the role of a social worker who helps a family through a series of exorcisms. The movie will also star Andra Day, Glenn Close, Caleb McLaughlin and Aunjanue Ellis.

By Brooks Welch

TV personality, actor, singer, and entrepreneur Ray J is launching a digital network.

Specific details about the platform haven’t been reported, however it’s been clarified that the digital network will offer original content.

This is a development that further establishes the entrepreneur in the tech space.

In an exclusive interview with Afrotech in 2021, Ray J spoke about his earbud brand RAYCON, which he showed off during the Super Bowl in an Instagram video.

“Three years ago, the earbud business wasn’t as booming as it is now,” Ray J said. “But now, it’s on fire. And I think our price point is what says it all. People are paying way too much for earbuds — they’re overpriced. When RAYCON came in with our prices, and our styles, I think we set ourselves apart from all the competition.”

He also founded an electronics company called Raytroniks and began shipping an electric bike called the Scoot-E-Bike in 2016, as reported by Venture Beat.

Sources of the Jasmine Brand report that the entertainer is already filming content for his upcoming network.

Kanye Agrees To Go Away ‘To Get Help’

Rapper Kanye West has agreed to stop harassing ex-wife Kim Kardashian.

By Brooks Welch

Rapper Kanye West has agreed to stop harassing ex-wife Kim Kardashian.

A source told Entertainment News that West has informed Kardashian that he’s “going away to get help” and agreed to stop harassing her and cyber bullying her boyfriend, Pete Davidson.

The source also said, “for the sake of their kids, Kanye told Kim he’s not making any public appearances or inflammatory social media statements, and he will go away somewhere to get better.”

As reported by Screen Rant, West’s social media meltdowns of cyberbullying Davidson, attacking Kim’s parenting, and insulting comedian Trevor Noah led to his Instagram account was shut down for 24 hours, a “fair punishment” from Kim’s perspective. Kanye’s 2022 Grammy Awards appearance was also canceled as a result of his nonstop cyberbullying.

Kim has reached a “breaking point” and publicly released a statement about the way Kanye was hurting their family.

“Kanye’s constant attacks on me in interviews and on social media is actually more hurtful than any TikTok North might create,” wrote Kardashian in an Instagram story addressing Kanye being displeased with their oldest child creating a TikTok account with Kim’s supervision.

“As the parent who is the main provider and caregiver for our children, I am doing my best to protect our daughter while also allowing her to express her creativity in the medium that she wishes with adult supervision — because it brings her so much happiness,” the statement continued. “Divorce is difficult enough on our children and Kanye’s obsession with trying to control and manipulate our situation so negatively and publicly is only causing further pain for all.”

Yahoo! spoke to Kanye’s newly hired head of media and partnerships, Jason Lee of Hollywood Unlocked, who issued  a statement of denial.

“Ye monitors all headlines pertaining to him and his family daily. Most all are being fed to media by ‘sources close to the Kardashians,’ which have been creating a false narrative that not only is untrue but further compromises his goal of creating a healthy environment for the beautiful children he shares with Kim,” he said.

He continued, “[Kanye]’s been focused on taking care of himself, being a present and loving father and a creative genius well before all the false headlines we’ve seen as recent. … If you don’t hear it from his mouth, read it from his social media, or get it from a press release he approved it’s simply false,” Lee said.

Kim and Kanye married in 2014, Kim filed for divorce in 2021. They have four children together.

‘Bad Boys 4’ Release Postponed Due to Oscars Slap

Consequences continue to unfold for actor Will Smith  after his public attack on Chris Rock during the Oscars.

By Brooks Welch

Consequences continue to unfold for actor Will Smith  after his public attack on Chris Rock during the Oscars.

According to Vulture, Smith has made several apologies: one while onstage accepting his Oscar and one afterward to Chris Rock via Instagram. The most recent being his resignation from the Academy.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, Smith said in a statement, “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” the actor said. “The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

The Academy’s president David Rubin responded to Smith’s statement by saying, “We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.”

According to THR, Smith has responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice and “will fully accept any and all consequences” for his conduct.

However, actions are still being taken from the production companies and distributors of his upcoming projects.

“Netflix has slowed development on its upcoming action-thriller “Fast and Loose,” which Will Smith has been attached to star in,” reports Variety.

‘Fast and Loose’ was to tell the story of a crime boss who loses his memory after an attack. Piecing together clues, he discovers that he has led a double identity as a wealthy kingpin and a broke CIA agent. (via The Hollywood Reporter)

‘Bad Boys 4’ had been in “active development,” The Hollywood Reporter also reported. Smith received 40 pages of the script before the Oscars, but the production will now pause.

Apple+ also had a project with Smith titled ‘Emancipation’ in post-production. The streaming service planned to have the movie released this year, but now the release date is unknown.

Committee Vote On Jackson-Supreme Court Pick Delayed

California Democrat Alex Padilla, experienced travel problems returning to DC.

(Washington, DC) — The vote for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s U.S. Supreme Court bid is being delayed by a vital Senate committee. One member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, California Democrat Alex Padilla, experienced travel problems while returning from his home state and is expected to be back at the Capitol later today. Republicans on the panel are opposing Jackson so there are no votes to spare in referring her to the full Senate.

The evenly-split committee is expected to deadlock on Jackson. Dems hold a razor thin majority in the full Senate and will pull procedural levers to call a confirmation vote later this week. Democrats on the committee have labeled Jackson an historic pick who is highly qualified. Republicans call her evasive and soft on crime in her sentencing practices. Jackson would be the first Black woman to ever serve on the Supreme Court.

Adrienne Bailon Reveals ‘Severe Anxiety’ While Hosting ‘The Real’

On a recent episode of the daytime television show ‘The Real,’ long-time co-host Adrienne Bailon, most known for being apart of the Cheetah Girls, opened up about her struggles with severe anxiety.

By Brooks Welch

On a recent episode of the daytime television show ‘The Real,’ long-time co-host Adrienne Bailon, most known for being apart of the Cheetah Girls, opened up about her struggles with severe anxiety.

During the second part of a truth telling segment on ‘The Real’ called “I’ve Always Wanted To Know,” co-host Jeannie Mai Jenkins asked Bailon, “What is the deepest secret that you have not spoken about on the show?”

Bailon answered, “I don’t know which season it was, probably two or three years ago,” the singer and actress confessed. “I was dealing with anxiety on a level that like….I had to have Sonya (producer for ‘The Real’) call the medic a few times.”

She admitted to feeling embarrassed or “stupid.”

“They would, like, rush me off and you’d be like ‘what’s happening?’ It would be that I was having panic attacks – like, really really bad panic attacks,” she continued.

After having a panic attack on the show, she educated the audience on how being in the same environment after having a panic attack can trigger another one while in the same place. For Bailon, this environment was the set of ‘The Real’

She told her co-hosts that every time they walked out for an entire season, she would focus on reading the prompter, although sometimes she could “barely see.”

In reflecting on those overwhelming and terrifying moments as a television personality, Bailon shared how she coped.

“I thank God for the power of our minds and recognizing. I just got to a point where I’m like, if my mind can convince me that I’m having a heart attack my mind can also convince me that I’m fine.”

Houses Passes Bill To Decriminalize Marijuana

The U.S. House of Representative passes legislation that would make the decriminalization of marijuana a federal law.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Marijuana would be decriminalized at the federal level under legislation the House approved Friday as Democrats made the case for allowing states to set their own policies on pot.

The bill is unlikely to become law since it is expected to die in the Senate. That would mirror what happened when a similar House-passed measure removing marijuana from the list of federally-controlled substances went nowhere in the Senate two years ago.

Still, Friday’s vote gave lawmakers the chance to state their view on a decriminalization push that appears to have broad support with voters across the country.

The 2020 election showed how broadly accepted marijuana has become, with measures to legalize recreational pot breezing to victory in progressive New Jersey, moderate Arizona and conservative Montana and South Dakota.

The House approved the bill Friday with a mostly party-line vote of 220-204. All but two voting Democrats backed the measure, while only three Republicans did.

The measure would require federal courts to expunge prior marijuana convictions and conduct resentencing hearings for those completing their sentences. It also authorizes a 5% sales tax on marijuana and marijuana products that would be used for grant programs focused on job training, substance abuse treatment and loans to help disadvantaged small businesses get into the marijuana industry.

Democrats said the nation’s federal prohibition on marijuana has had particularly devastating consequences for minority communities. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., cited statistics that showed Black Americans were four times more likely than white Americans to be arrested for marijuana possession, even though they use it at similar rates.

“Those criminal records can haunt people of color and impact the trajectory of their lives indefinitely,” Hoyer said. “I regret that there are some members of our Congress who apparently think that’s not worthy of attention.”

“Make no mistake, yes, it is a racial justice bill,” said Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif.

Republicans who opposed the measure said marijuana is a gateway drug that would lead to greater use of opioids and other dangerous substances. They also said the pot sold today is far more potent than what was sold decades ago, leading to greater impairment for those who use it. They said decriminalization is not the priority that lawmakers should be focused on now, with the war in Ukraine and inflation driving up the cost of gas, food and other essential items.

“Yet the priority of this Congress now turns to expanding access to addictive, behavior-altering recreational drugs at a time when our country is also experiencing increased addiction, depression and suicide,” said Rep. Bob Good, R-Va.

Thirty-seven states and District of Columbia allow the medical use of cannabis products while 18 states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

“If states are the laboratories of democracy, it is long past time for the federal government to recognize that legalization has been a resounding success and that the conflict with federal law has become untenable,” said the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

In the Senate, Democrats including Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York asked colleagues in early February for their input on a marijuana decriminalization bill. He said after the House vote that they were still working on crafting the legislation, but he hoped it would be introduced “very soon.”

“Of course, we will need Republicans to pass a legalization bill in the Senate, and we will be working hard to try and get them,” Schumer said.

5 Hilarious Pranks Involving Celebrities: Drake, LeBron James, Bruno Mars

By Brooks Welch

April is known for Easter bunnies and the beginning of Spring, but for pranksters, it’s the best time of the year.

April Fools is celebrated on the first every year. Some speculate that “the holiday began in 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, which indicated the beginning of the new year as April 1st. Those who failed to recognize the first of the year began in January where called “April fools,” reports History.com. The holiday also has ties to ancient Rome and the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Since then, the holiday has become the official day for shenanigans and buffoonery.

In celebration, here’s 5 videos of hilarious pranks involving celebrities.

President Biden Takes Measures To Lower Gas Prices

President Joe Biden ordered the release of millions of gallons of U.S. oil reserves in an attempt to lower gas prices in the U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Thursday ordered the release of 1 million barrels of oil per day from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve for six months, a bid to control energy prices that have spiked after the United States and allies imposed steep sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

The president said it was not known how much gasoline prices could decline as a result of his move, but he suggested it might be “anything from 10 cents to 35 cents a gallon.” Gas is averaging about $4.23 a gallon, compared with $2.87 a year ago, according to AAA.

“The bottom line is if we want lower gas prices we need to have more oil supply right now,” Biden said. “This is a moment of consequence and peril for the world, and pain at the pump for American families.”

The president also wants Congress to impose financial penalties on oil and gas companies that lease public lands but are not producing. He said he will invoke the Defense Production Act to encourage the mining of critical minerals for batteries in electric vehicles, part of a broader push to shift toward cleaner energy sources and reduce the use of fossil fuels.

The actions show that oil remains a vulnerability for the U.S. Higher prices have hurt Biden’s approval domestically and added billions of oil-export dollars to the Russian government as it wages war on Ukraine.

Tapping the stockpile would create pressures that could reduce oil prices, though Biden has twice ordered releases from the reserves without causing a meaningful shift in oil markets. Biden said Thursday he expects gasoline prices could drop “fairly significantly.”

Part of Biden’s concern is that high prices have not so far coaxed a meaningful jump in oil production. The planned release is a way to increase supplies as a bridge until oil companies ramp up their own production, with administration officials estimating that domestic production will grow by 1 million barrels daily this year and an additional 700,000 barrels daily in 2023.

The markets reacted quickly with crude oil prices dropping about 6% in Thursday trading to roughly $101 a barrel. Still, oil is up from roughly $60 a year ago, with supplies failing to keep up with demand as the world economy has begun to rebound from the coronavirus pandemic. That inflationary problem was compounded by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which created new uncertainties about oil and natural gas supplies and led to retaliatory sanctions from the U.S. and its allies.

Stewart Glickman, an oil analyst for CFRA Research, said the release would bring short-term relief on prices and would be akin to “taking some Advil for a headache.” But markets would ultimately look to see whether, after the releases stop, the underlying problems that led to Biden’s decisions remain.

“The root cause of the headache is probably still going to be there after the medicine wears off,” Glickman said.

Biden has been in talks with allies and partners to join in additional releases of oil, such that the world market will get more than the 180 million barrels total being pledged by the U.S.

Americans on average use about 21 million barrels of oil daily, with about 40% of that devoted to gasoline, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That total accounts for about one-fifth of total global consumption of oil.

Domestic oil production is equal to more than half of U.S. usage, but high prices have not led companies to return to their pre-pandemic levels of output. The U.S. is producing on average 11.7 million barrels daily, down from 13 million barrels in early 2020.

Republican lawmakers have said the problem results from the administration being hostile to oil permits and the construction of new pipelines such as the Keystone XL. Democrats say the country needs to move to renewable energy such as wind and solar that could reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and Putin’s leverage.

Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., blasted Biden’s action to tap the reserve without first taking steps to increase American energy production, calling it “a Band-Aid on a bullet wound.″

Daines called Biden’s actions “desperate moves″ that avoid what he called the real solution: ”investing in American energy production,″ and getting “oil and gas leases going again.”

The administration says increasing oil output is a gradual process and the release would provide time to ramp up production. It also wants to incentivize greater production by putting fees on unused leases on government lands, something that would require congressional approval.

Oil producers have been more focused on meeting the needs of investors than consumers, according to a survey released last week by the Dallas Federal Reserve. About 59% of the executives surveyed said investor pressure to preserve “capital discipline” amid high prices was the reason they weren’t pumping more, while fewer than 10% blamed government regulation.

In his remarks Thursday, Biden tried to shame oil companies that he said are focused on profits instead of putting out more barrels, saying that adding to the oil supply was a patriotic obligation.

“This is not the time to sit on record profits: It’s time to step up for the good of your country,” the president said.

The steady release from the reserves would be a meaningful sum and come near to closing the domestic production gap relative to February 2020, before the coronavirus caused a steep decline in oil output.

Still, the politics of oil are complicated with industry advocates and environmentalists both criticizing the planned release. Groups such as the American Petroleum Institute want to make drilling easier, while environmental organizations say energy companies should be forced to pay a special tax on windfall profits instead.

The administration in November announced the release of 50 million barrels from the strategic reserve in coordination with other countries. And after the Russia-Ukraine war began, the U.S. and 30 other countries agreed to an additional release of 60 million barrels from reserves, with half of the total coming from the U.S.

According to the Department of Energy, which manages it, more than 568 million barrels of oil were held in the reserve as of March 25. After the release, the government would begin to replenish the reserve once prices have sufficiently fallen.

By Brooks Welch

In his first show since the Oscars, comedian Chris Rock candidly told Boston audience that he’s “still processing” his attack from best actor winner Will Smith during the 94th Academy Awards.

As reported by The Guardian, Rock greeted his crowd by jokingly asking, “How was your weekend?” He then explained how he “did not have a lot to say” yet about that night.

“I’m still kind of processing what happened,” he continued. “If you came to hear that, I’m not … I had like a whole show I wrote before this weekend.”

Only two months before the Oscars, Rock spoke candidly on the podcast “Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade” about his traumatic experiences with being bullied “ridiculously.”

The comedian said, “Half of the bullying was because I was just a little guy. Then I got bused to school and the bullying was because I was a little guy and I was Black. I was getting double bullied.” (via People)

He outlined an incident that made him afraid of expressing his anger.

Today reported that, in 2020, Rock said he was attending 7 hours of therapy a week, received a diagnosis of nonverbal learning disorder, and has made strides to express his emotions more freely.

“In the last year, now I can get angry. I’m not scared of letting people know how I feel about certain things,” he said. “So now, I can tell you, ‘Hey, I didn’t like what you said to me … without losing my head.’”

Rock has yet to make a formal statement addressing the terrifying Oscars incident or Will Smith.

According to NBC, he declined to press charges, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

By Brooks Welch

Comedian Wanda Sykes, co-host of the 94th Academy Awards alongside Amy Schumer and Regina Hall, spoke candidly about her account of the Oscars.

In a recent interview on The Ellen Show, Sykes shared what comedian Chris Rock said to her at Gucci’s 14th Annual “The Party” after the award show, reports Today

“As soon as I walked up, the first thing he said to me was, ‘I am so sorry. It was supposed to be your night. You and Amy and Regina were doing such a good job. I’m so sorry this is going to be about this,'” Wanda told host Ellen. “That’s who Chris is.”

Sykes also spoke about her reaction to seeing actor Will Smith attack her friend, Chris Rock.

“I just felt so awful for my friend, Chris. It was sickening,” she said. “I physically felt ill and I’m still a little traumatized by it. For [the Academy] to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award. I was like, ‘How gross is this?’ This is just the wrong message,’ You assault somebody, you get escorted out the building and that’s it. But for them to let him continue, I thought it was gross,” Sykes expressed.

The comedian jokingly shared what she wanted to do after Smith was presented Best Actor for his role in ‘King Richard’ after his egregious behavior.

Will Smith Faces Possible ‘Suspension, Expulsion’ From Oscars

Serious consequences are underway for Will Smith’s violent attack on comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards.

By Brooks Welch

Serious consequences could be underway for Will Smith’s violent attack on comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards.

On March 27th, while presenting an award later given to Questlove, Chris Rock compared Jada Pinkett-Smith to fictional character “G.I. Jane,” which brought attention to her lack of hair. It was public information that the actress struggles with autoimmune disorder alopecia, which generates massive hair loss. Smith, after laughing at the joke initially, went on stage and striked Rock across the face. “Keep my wife’s name out your [expletive] mouth!” Smith shouted twice at Rock. Smith was still given his award for Best Actor following the altercation.

Variety reported that the Board of Governors held an emergency meeting to discuss disciplinary action for Smith’s behavior. The first time Oscar winner for his role in ‘King Richard’ is facing “suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted.”

According to the NY Times, the Academy asked Smith to leave the award ceremony after attacking Chris Rock, but he refused.

In a letter to board members, film academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said the leaders of the nonprofit organization were “upset and outraged” that the celebration of achievement in the film industry was “overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior on stage by a nominee,” as reported by NBC

The letter apologized to Chris Rock for what happened on the Academy’s stage and thanked him for his “resilience in that moment.” Nominees and viewers were also given an apology for “what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”

The Board gave Smith a 15 days notice of a vote regarding his violations and sanctions, and has the opportunity to provide a written response.

The next board meeting is scheduled for April 18, when the Academy may take disciplinary action.

Celebrity makeup artist, beauty expert, entrepreneur, and beauty influence, AJ Crimson has tragically passed away at 27 years old.

By Brooks Welch

Celebrity makeup artist, beauty expert, entrepreneur, and beauty influence, AJ Crimson has reportedly passed away at 27 years old.

According to Essence, Crimson was credited with being one of the first makeup artists to expertly enhance the beauty of women within all shades. He served celebrity clients including Lauren London, Missy Elliot, Regina King, Brandy, and Angela Bassett.

As reported by Dexerto, the Detroit-native built a substantial social media following, primarily on Instagram, with over 100,000 followers.

“AJ Crimson’s branding has been highlighted in industry-leading magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s BAZAAR, Glamour, InStyle, Esquire, Essence, and Marie Claire, as well as leading Japanese entertainment magazines Blenda and Luire,” writes Teal Mango.

In 2020, Crimson spoke to Yahoo! about his passion for the beauty industry and his mission within it.

“My vision for AJ Crimson Beauty was luxury cosmetics with Black women in mind first,” he said. “As a makeup artist, my entire career I gravitated to luxury products for my clientele. Yet there weren’t always products at that level that worked with some of my more melanin-rich clients.”

This led Crimson to his entrepreneurial ventures, AJ Crimson Beauty, and a new perspective on beauty.

“I thought it was a shame only drug store options [were] available, so I knew I had to change that,” he said. “I love beautiful things, people, fashion, architecture. The beauty industry sort of found me; I thought I’d be in politics, public speaking or artist management, which are all passions of mine [and] have been involved in, but beauty has taken me all over the world in a very interesting way.”

His cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

“Questlove” Won Oscar Only Minutes After Slap

Another award that was overshadowed at the Oscars

Legendary drummer of The Roots, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, won the award for his directorial role of Summer of Soul. Summer of Soul is a musical documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which celebrated African-American music and culture. Questlove accepted the award a few minutes after the slap. What Will Smith and Chris Rock did really stained what should have been the best moment for Questlove. He managed to get through that by going up on stage along with his producers, accept the award from Chris Rock, and gave out a meaningful speech.

Smith Refused To Leave Oscars After Hitting Rock

Officials with the Oscars say they tried to get Chris Rock to leave ceremony.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Wednesday said that Will Smith was asked to leave to Sunday’s Oscar ceremony after hitting Chris Rock but refused to do so.

The academy’s board of governors met Wednesday to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations against the group’s standards of conduct. The academy said disciplinary action for Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

Many have focused on why Smith was allowed to remain seated front row at the Academy Awards after the incident. On Wednesday, the academy suggested that it attempted to remove the actor from the audience.

“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated,” the academy said. “While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”

A representative for the academy declined to give specifics on how it tried to removed Smith. After Smith struck Rock in response to a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, several stars including Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Tyler Perry spoke with the 53-year-old Smith.

The academy said Smith has the opportunity to defend himself in a written response before the board meets again on April 18. The film academy earlier condemned Smith’s onstage assault of Rock, but it used stronger language Wednesday.

“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television,” the academy said. “Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”

On Monday, Smith issued an apology to Rock, the academy and to viewers, saying “I was out of line and I was wrong.”

A representative for Smith didn’t immediately respond to messages Wednesday regarding the academy’s latest moves.

The city of Baltimore has reached a $3.5 million settlement with local businesses damaged during protests and unrest over the 2015 death of Freddie Gray.
Nearly 70 businesses were part of the lawsuit, first filed in 2017. They claim police response was slow during the riots, and that then-Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake made things worse with comments about giving “those who wished to destroy space to do that”.
Gray died in police custody after he was arrested in April 2015. None of the six officers involved in his death were convicted of a crime.
Should the city be held liable here? Could this settlement impact similar lawsuits in other cities?

She’s gone but she was with us for 50 years. I try to relish in that moment and try to smile about it. Be grateful for the time you have and you have to always remember to be kind to one another. She said Traci loved the snow and when she died it was snowing in Virginia. She called Traci her ‘snowflake.’ She said Traci also loved Hummingbirds and she saw one the other day and thought it was Traci saying hi to her.

Have you lost someone close to you? What signs have you seen of your loved one saying ‘hi’ to you?
