What is Alopecia? Learn About Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Hair Loss Condition

After the viral incident of ‘King Richard’ actor Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock for his joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair,  a curiosity surrounding alopecia, a hair loss condition, has peaked.

By Brooks Welch

After the viral incident of ‘King Richard’ actor Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock for his joke about Jada Pinkett Smith‘s hair during the Oscars,  a curiosity surrounding alopecia, a hair loss condition, has peaked.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s condition is called alopecia areata, a disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles, often on the scalp or face, but sometimes on other parts of the body,” reports AP News.

Jada first revealed her diagnosis in 2018 on her Facebook show Red Table Talk, according to CNN. She said it was “terrifying” when her hair started falling out in clumps.

Alopecia areata can arise in childhood, adolescence or adulthood. People who have the condition tend to lose hair in clumps which causes round bald spots (via NY Times).

With early treatment, alopecia areata can be reversible. About 80 percent of people with the condition find that their hair regrows without treatment within a year, according to Medical News Today.

Yale Medicine reported steroid injections among traditional treatments for regrowing hair. The steroids suppress the immune system cells, so hair can regrow. There are also topical treatments, steroid tablets, immunotherapy, Dithranol cream, UV light treatment, and Minoxidil.

Besides Pinkett-Smith, other celebrities who have battled with alopecia and hair loss are Viola Davis, Tyra Banks, Christina Milian, and Naomi Campbell.

Study: Music Is As Effective As Exercise For Improving Mental Health

Your favorite song might be aiding in your overall well-being.

By Brooks Welch

Your favorite song might be aiding in your overall well-being.

According to a new study reported by Science Alert, the mental health boost from music is “within the range, albeit on the low end” of the same sort of impact seen in people who commit to physical exercise or weight loss programs.

According to AARP, research shows that music can have a beneficial effect on brain chemicals such as dopamine, which is linked to feelings of pleasure, and oxytocin, the so-called “love hormone.”

“Music seems to selectively activate neurochemical systems and brain structures associated with positive mood, emotion regulation, attention and memory in ways that promote beneficial changes,” Kim Innes, a professor of epidemiology at West Virginia University’s School of Public Health, told TIME .

A technique widely used by music therapists, that you can try at home, to relieve a patient’s stress is to practice “deep listening.” By meditating on the words, sounds, and feelings of a song, one can get in tune with their mental state and improve it.

“We can do that even when we’re feeling at our most isolated and sad,” says Suzanne Hanser, president of the International Association for Music & Medicine (IAMM) and a professor of music therapy at Berklee College of Music, “We can take control, we can be empowered by the music to feel differently.”

Oscars Recap: A Conversation about Will Smith and Chris Rock

Will Smith, Chris Rock and the Oscars that sent shock waves around the world.

The day after the Academy Awards the conversation normally is about who should have won the best picture Oscar, who deserved the best actor or actress award, or who looked best on the red carpet. Well, not this time.
Last night was one for the books.

Will Smith taking to the stage to smack Chris Rock after the comedian joked about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head.   But was Smith’s act that of chivalry or of someone unable to control his anger, which in another setting, say on the street, could have cost him, as it has other black men, dearly. And what of Rock’s joke aimed at the looks of women, especially in this case, a black women? Those issues and more part of our conversation tonight.

Tax Relief For Marylanders

Maryland’s governor and the state legislature agree on a massive tax relief legislation.

Tax relief is coming for Maryland retirees, small businesses and low-income families.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and state legislatures have agreed on a near two-billion dollar tax relief package over the next five years.  Hogan called the bipartisan deal “the largest tax cut package in state history with major and long-overdue relief for Maryland’s retirees.”  The new tax relief agreement comes as the state has collected billions of dollars in surplus resulting from large amounts of COVID-19 pandemic federal aid.

Will Smith Apologizes To Chris Rock

A day after slapping Chris Rock at the Academy Awards ceremony, Will Smith apologizes to Rock.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The day after slapping Chris Rock on the stage of the 94th Academy Awards, Will Smith issued an apology to the comedian, the academy and viewers at home, saying he was “out of line” and that his actions are “not indicative of the man I want to be.”

The fallout of Sunday’s show continued Monday as the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences condemned Smith’s onstage assault and said it would launch an inquiry into it. Later in the day, Smith gave a stronger apology than he did in his best actor acceptance speech, which notably didn’t include apologizing to Rock.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” said Smith. “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Smith added apologies to the film academy, producers of the telecast, attendees, viewers and the Williams family. Smith was honored for his role as Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena.

“I am a work in progress,” added Smith.

Earlier Monday, the film academy said: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.”

The fallout from Smith’s onstage assault continued Monday, as Hollywood and the public continued to wrestle with a moment that stunned the Dolby Theatre crowd and viewers at home, and may have passed all others — even that gold-standard flub, EnvelopeGate — in Academy Awards infamy.

Smith shocked the Dolby Theatre crowd and viewers at home when he took the stage during Rock’s remarks after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith’s wife. Rock said, “Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it.”

The joke touched a nerve. Pinkett Smith, whose head is shaved, has spoken publicly about her alopecia diagnosis. Smith strode on stage and slapped Rock across the face. Back in his seat, Smith twice shouted for Rock to “get my wife’s name out your (expletive) mouth.” His words echoed clearly throughout the Dolby, though broadcaster ABC cut the audio for about 15 seconds. Within an hour, Smith won best actor. During his acceptance speech, Smith apologized to the academy.

After the show Sunday night, the academy posted a statement condemning violence. The Los Angeles Police Department said Sunday it was aware of the incident but not pursuing an investigation because the person involved declined to file a police report.

Some academy members, like writer-producer Marshall Herskovitz, called for the academy to take disciplinary action against Smith.

“He disgraced our entire community tonight,” wrote Herskovitz on Twitter.

Whoopi Goldberg, a member of the Academy’s board of governors, said Monday on “The View”: “We’re not going to take that Oscar from him. There will be consequences, I’m sure.”

The Screen Actors Guild also weighed in. The film, television and radio union called the incident “unacceptable” and said “violence or physical abuse in the workplace is never acceptable.” SAG said that it had been in contact with the academy and ABC, and it doesn’t comment on the guild’s own disciplinary process.

A sense of disbelief hung in the air at the Dolby Theatre after Smith’s assault, and it didn’t dissipate Monday. Not only was it a hard-to-fathom break with decorum on live national television — an incident so dramatic, even movie-like, that many initially assumed it was a staged bit — it seemed wildly out of character for one of Hollywood’s most relentlessly upbeat stars.

All of this less than an hour before Smith reached possibly the climactic moment of his career, winning his first Oscar, for best actor.

“In a way, I feel bad for Will Smith, too, because I think he let his emotions get the better of him, and this should have been one of the great nights of his life,” said former Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel on Bill Simmons’ podcast. “And now it’s not. Was there anyone who didn’t like Will Smith an hour ago in the world? Like no one, right? Now he doesn’t have a single comedian friend — that’s for sure.”

Some questioned whether Smith should have been allowed to continue to sit front and center after smacking Rock. Several stars rushed to counsel and calm Smith, including Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Tyler Perry. But the timing was also awkward because the best actor category was due up soon after, and Smith had long been considered a lock for the award.

“I know we’re all still processing, but the way casual violence was normalized tonight by a collective national audience will have consequences that we can’t even fathom in the moment,” wrote Janai Nelson, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, on Twitter.

The joke that provoked Smith was not part of Rock’s routine during the rehearsals leading up to the show, according to two sources close to production who were not authorized to speak publicly.

Rock had joked about Pinkett Smith before. He hosted the 2016 Oscars, when some were boycotting the ceremony over the #OscarsSoWhite group of nominees, including the Smiths. Said Rock: “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.”

The drama overshadowed some historical wins at an Oscars. The deaf family drama “CODA” became the first film with a largely deaf cast to win best picture. For the first time, a streaming service, Apple TV+, took Hollywood’s top honor, signaling a profound shift in Hollywood and in moviegoing. Ariana DeBose of “West Side Story” became the first Afro-Latina and the first openly LGBTQ actor to win best supporting actress.

Study Reports New Male Birth Control Pill Is ‘99% Effective’ In Mice

According to Fortune, the first male birth control pill, which has shown significant results in lab trials, could begin human testing before the end of the year.

By Brooks Welch

According to Fortune, the first male birth control pill, which has shown significant results in lab trials, could begin human testing before the end of the year.

This compound has no apparent side effects and “greatly reduced mice sperm counts and ended up being 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy (on a par with the pill’s effectiveness in women),” The Daily Beast reported.

In new findings presented at the spring meeting of the American Chemical Society on Wednesday, researchers at The University of Minnesota created a brand new drug, called YCT529, that targets not the male hormone testosterone, but a protein called retinoic acid receptor alpha (via The Daily Beast).

This new compound is a promising addition to pre-existing male contraceptives, condoms and vasectomies.

Md Abdullah Al Noman, a UM graduate student involved in the research project, recently spoke with The Daily Beast about these findings.

“Birth control is a critical health-care issue,” Al Noman said. “Because about more than half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unintended pregnancies. And that can lead to very poor outcomes, whether in terms of the child’s health or maternal health and also financial and career advancement of women. We need to have more investment in the research and development of the male birth control pill.”

According to Indy 100, there is controversy about whether men will take the pill.

“People cited a general lack of trust as the main reason an everyday male birth control pill may not work,” writes the publication.

The “Our Kind Of People” actor continued, “So first and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me and allowing me to be able to do that, to be able to go outside of myself and be in an industry where you have to go outside of yourself and be these characters. … Friendship is very important to me. By Brooks Welch

Influential figures including multimedia mogul and TV personality Charlamagne tha God are advocating for Colon Cancer prevention in the Black community, a heinous disease that took the life of ‘Black Panther’ Chadwick Boseman.

“Too many of us have had friends or family that have been affected by colorectal cancer, so it’s important for me to speak out and help eliminate any embarrassment surrounding colorectal cancer screening,” said Charlamagne tha God.

According to statistics just released by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined, and Black Americans are about 20% more likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer and 35% more likely to die from it. Despite the recent lowering of the minimum screening age to 45 from 50, many in the Black community will not get screened. (via Black Enterprise)

Alongside Charlamagne Tha God, other ambassadors for Alliance’s “They Didn’t Say” campaign include journalist, TV and podcast host, Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, award-winning photographer, Mel D. Cole, and director, DJ, and designer, Vashtie.

The campaign’s primary aim is to bring attention to the disparities affecting the Black community and colon cancer. The initiative also wants to combat the misconception of colon cancer only affecting those later in life. (via Ebony)

The “They Didn’t Say” campaign is in collaboration with leading influencer and digital marketing agency Team Epiphany. The creative agency  founder, Coltrane Curtis, feels strongly about the initiative.

“As a Black American, and someone who has a platform for change, I am committed to reaching our community with this important call to action. There are so many issues facing us that we can’t control. Preventing colon cancer is one thing we can do. We aim to shift the scales on health equity with this campaign.”

Supreme Court Nominee Ketanji Jackson Moved To Tears By Senator Corey Booker’s Words

On Wednesday night, a video of Senator Corey Booker went viral as he gave a passionate speech to honor Ketanji Jackson.

By Brooks Welch

On Wednesday night, a video of Senator Corey Booker went viral as he gave a passionate speech to honor Supreme Court Nominee, Ketanji Jackson.

During the third day of Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, the New Jersey senator spoke to the greatness in Ketanji Jackson, the first Black woman in the Supreme Court.

“I want to tell you when I look at you, this is why I get emotional,” said Booker through tears, “I’m sorry — you’re a person that is so much more than your race and gender.”

Booker noted that Jackson is a Christian, a mother and an intellect and that she has a love of books. Jackson and others in the audience wiped away tears as Booker spoke. He also became emotional at times, reports NPR.

According to Yahoo! News and NPR, Booker is the fourth Black person elected to the U.S. Senate, the only Black member of the Senate committee and one of only three Black senators. In a position where identifying with one’s fellow Black colleagues can be seen as unwise or biased, Booker completely identified with Jackson’s presence in the Supreme Court.

“You faced insults here that were shocking to me — well, actually not shocking,” he said.

Republican senator Ted Cruz recently asked Supreme Court Nominee Jackson her thoughts on book “Anti-Racist Baby” by author Ibram X. Kendi,  “Do you agree with this book that is being taught to kids that babies are racist?” To which she responded with a long pause, followed by grace and poise. This was one example of the absurd interactions she has navigated during her confirmation hearings.

“It’s hard for me not to look at you and not see my mom. Not to see my cousins, one of them who had to come here and sit behind you. She had to have your back. I see my ancestors and yours,” Booker said. “But don’t worry, my sister. Don’t worry. God has got you. And how do I know that? You’re here, and I know what it’s taken for you to sit in that seat.

“You have earned this spot,” Booker said. “You are worthy. You are a great American.”

The committee will resume the confirmation hearings again Thursday, the fourth and final day, to hear from witnesses. (via Yahoo! News)

By Brooks Welch

Beyoncé is not only nominated for an Oscar this year, but the Academy confirmed her name among the performers this Tuesday.

According to the LA Times, Queen Bey will sing “Be Alive” from the Will Smith film “King Richard,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday in announcing the live performance. The song is also nominated for an Oscar this year.

“Beyoncé’s camp has been in deep talks with producers to mount a satellite performance of the song — one that would possibly open the show, and broadcast live from tennis courts in Compton, California,” reported Variety on Monday.

The performance being set on a tennis court would support the premise of ‘King Richard,’ a film that tells the story of Venus and Serena William’s journey to tennis domination.

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts about ‘Homecoming’ performer’s comeback via the Oscars stage. Many with humorous posts about only watching the Oscars for her performance. Other fans have shared their inability to handle the flawlessness that will ensue.

Children, Trauma and the Long-Term Effects

Can we do anything about it?

Earlier this month, 42-year-old Sedrick Miller was shot to death in Northeast DC.  But he was not alone.  He was holding a car seat with one of his children in it.  He was also holding the hand of his five year old.  The children were not hurt.  Or were they? We take a look at how traumatic events witnessed by the very young impact them now and much later in life.  Can we do anything about it?

(Washington, DC) — Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is dead at the age of 84 from cancer. She was the first woman U.S. secretary of state, under former President Bill Clinton. Prior to that, she was the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Her family said she died surrounded by family and friends.

Albright immigrated with her family to the United States in 1948 from Czechoslovakia and she became a U.S. citizen in 1957. By 1976, she had received a Ph.D. from Columbia University and was working for former President Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser. Keke Palmer Partners With Amazon To Highlight Black Women-Owned Businesses

Keke Palmer recently worked with Amazon for a themed series to uplift woman business owners during Women’s History Month.

By Brooks Welch

The award-winning actress, entertainer, and entrepreneur Keke Palmer is spending Women’s History Month in like-minded company.

Palmer recently worked with Amazon for a themed series to uplift woman business owners during Women’s History Month. On March 8th, Palmer hosted a sit down conversation between Eunique Jones Gibson, the founder and CEO of #CultureTags, and Obia Ewah, the founder and CEO of OBIA Naturals, to discuss their experiences as self-made Black women and entrepreneurs, and how they are all championing more diverse leadership in business. (via About Amazon)

Entrepreneurship is a cause close to Palmer’s heart. “She became an entrepreneur herself in 2018, heading her own record label, Big Boss Entertainment,” reports Essence.

In a recent interview with Essence, Palmer mentioned Amazon’s new Black Business Accelerator, a program dedicated to helping build sustainable diversity and provide growth opportunities for Black-owned businesses. The financial support needed for mentoring, marketing, and strategic business guidance is not always afforded to Black businesses.

“It’s extremely important and generally stuff like that is expensive,” Palmer stated. “So the fact that Amazon wants to not only give a platform for sellers to sell, but also help them learn how to sell is necessary.”

The selected brands featured in Palmer’s Amazon series are Culture Tags, Obia Naturals, EPIC Everyday, Orijin Bees, Darlyng and Co., LIVE BY BEING, author Crystal Swain-Bates, Kanda Chocolates, and Bossy Cosmetics.

“My work to uplift other women who look like me is something I’m committed to every single day,” said Palmer. “As I evolve as a businesswoman and leader, I am inspired by the opportunity to connect with the women growing small businesses in Amazon’s store, and their work to represent themselves and their communities through their amazing ideas.”

Gabrielle Union Talks New Role In Disney Film ‘Cheaper By The Dozen’

Actress Gabrielle Union is the mom of blended family with 12 children in the reimagined, updated version of ‘Cheaper by the Dozen,’ originally a 1950s film starring Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy.

By Brooks Welch

Actress Gabrielle Union is the mom of blended family with 12 children in new reimagined, updated version of ‘Cheaper by the Dozen,’ originally a 1950s film starring Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy.

The Nebraska-born actress grew up watching the original ‘Cheaper By the Dozen’, and classic musicals ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ and ‘Meet Me in St. Louis.’ She recently told CinemaBlend about her observations concerning those films.

“The thing about all of those movies is they were all devoid of color,” Union stated. “No people of color, no different, you know, cultures, languages, there is zero diversity at all.”

The casting for this remake does not go unnoticed, as Union, a Black American actress is casted as the wife of Zach Braff, a white male actor.

“I wanted to make sure that we understood that she is a beautiful, amazing, accomplished black woman that wasn’t running away from blackness, she ran towards love, which is a big distinction in my eyes,” Union told Screen Rant. “I wanted her to be her full black self, which is why there are probably 87 hair changes, but I wanted to really showcase the textures, and how we as black women love our hair, and that it’s a daily part of our life and our identity.”

From director Gail Lerner and co-written by Kenya Barris & Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry, the family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen follows the Bakers, a blended family made up of one mom, one dad, nine kids, two dogs (cleverly named Bark Obama and Joe Biten), one cousin, and two exes, who are just trying to get it all done and hold it all together, albeit in a louder and more hectic way. (via Collider)

‘Cheaper by the Dozen is available to stream at Disney+.

Britney Spears Working On New Music, Last Album Released In 2016

For the first time in six years, since the release of ‘Glory,’ Britney Spears is set to ‘do it again’ and release new music.

By Brooks Welch

For the first time in six years, since the release of ‘Glory,’ Britney Spears is set to ‘do it again’ and release new music.

A source told The Sun, “It is very early days and Britney isn’t putting any pressure on herself to release an album right away or anything, but her team are putting feelers out about the prospect of new music.”

The legendary pop star’s return to music is a following her recent freedom from a 13-year-long conservatorship. In 2019, it was reported that Spears was against releasing any new music as a way to protest.

Before deactivating her Instagram account, Spears wrote in a caption: “I guess it seems odd to most now why I don’t even do my music any more . . .  that’s just the surface issues. People have no idea the awful things that were done to me personally . . .  and after what I’ve been through, I’m scared of people and the business. Not doing my music any more is my way of saying, [expletive], in a sense when it only actually benefits my family by ignoring my real work.”

After the outpour of love from fans and celebrities in support of her breaking free from her father, Jamie Spears, the ‘Baby One More Time’ singer is looking forward to this next chapter.

“She has been through an incredibly tough few years but deep down she does love making music and performing so to have some new music out there could really help her turn over a new leaf,” said the music insider.

Senators Question Brown-Jackson

Jackson pushes back at GOP critics, defends record

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing Republican senators’ pointed questions, Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson forcefully defended her record as a federal judge Tuesday and declared she will rule “from a position of neutrality” if confirmed as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson responded to Republicans who have questioned whether she is too liberal in her judicial philosophy, saying she tries to “understand what the people who created this law intended.” She said she relies on the words of statutes but also looks to history and practice when the meaning may not be clear.

She pushed back strongly against suggestions that she has given light sentences to child pornographers.

Could her rulings have endangered children? “As a mother and a judge,” she said, “nothing could be further from the truth.”

She described looking into the eyes of defendants and emphasizing the lifelong effects on victims. She said it is “important to me to represent that the children’s voices are represented.”

By Brooks Welch

There is talk of daytime television host Wendy Williams returning to the air.

Recently in an interview with Good Morning America via telephone, Wendy Williams addressed health concerns, lawsuit with Wells Fargo Bank, and her eventual return to television.

“I am very comfortable,” Williams told GMA’s T.J. Holmes when asked if she’s ready to get back on air. “Give me about 3 months. There are private things that I have to deal with and then I’ll be ready to come back.”

“[My] health is very well, and I’ve actually had a few appointments. I’m 57 now, and I have the mind and body of a 25-year-old,” says the media personality.

The legendary host even hinted at a surprise for fans. “This is what I would love to say to my Wendy watchers: Keep watching, because I’m going to be back on the Wendy show bigger and brighter than ever.”

The ongoing battle with Wells Fargo occurred after the bank froze Williams’ accounts for two months. According to Williams, the bank sees her as unfit to manage her personal finances. “They say that I need somebody to handle my account and I don’t want that. I want all my money,” says Williams.

In July of 2021, Williams made a last appearance on her show after complications with Graves disease, a thyroid condition, testing positive for COVID-19, and being psychologically evaluated (via Sun).

In a recent interview with the Breakfast Club, ‘King Richard’ actress Aunjanue Ellis, who starred as Williams, the mother of Serena and Venus Williams, gave the full story of why Will Smith gave bonuses to the main actors in November.

In a recent interview with the a popular New York radio station, ‘King Richard’ actress Aunjanue Ellis, who starred as Williams, the mother of Serena and Venus Williams, gave the full story of why Will Smith gave bonuses to the main actors in November.

“He did, but I think what’s important to say about that … and I think it’s important that I say this. As I said, after you get the job, the fight is not over. You know you have to fight for equal pay and that kind of thing. I did that job, and I’m thankful for it, but I could have gotten paid better. So I told him this, and he did something about it,” Ellis explained.

“As a result of his doing, his responding to the letter that I wrote to him, not only did he address that with increasing my pay, but the other actors in the movie also got their pay increased, which is the proof of when the Black women do well, everybody does well,” the actress stated.

According to Insider, Will Smith gave personal cash bonuses to the stars of ‘King Richard’ to compensate for the HBO Max release last November.

Ellis used her radio show appearance to highlight the issue of pay inequality for Black woman actors within the Entertainment industry.

“I think it’s important that first of all, people know who this man is and what he did, and also that Black women still have to fight to get paid equally,” Ellis stated.

You can stream ‘King Richard’ on HBO Max.

Historic Supreme Court Nomination Hearings Begin

Ketanji Brown Jackson would be the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice if confirmed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson pledged on Monday to decide cases “without fear or favor” if the Senate confirms her historic nomination as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson, 51, thanked God and professed love for “our country and the Constitution” in a 12-minute statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee at the end of her first day of confirmation hearings, nearly four hours almost entirely consumed by remarks from the panel’s 22 members.

Republicans promised pointed questions over the coming two days, with a special focus on her record on criminal matters. Democrats were full of praise for President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee.

With her family sitting behind her, her husband in socks bearing George Washington’s likeness, Jackson stressed that she has been independent, deciding cases “from a neutral posture” in her nine years as a judge, and that she is ever mindful of the importance of that role.

“I have dedicated my career to ensuring that the words engraved on the front of the Supreme Court building — equal justice under law — are a reality and not just an ideal,” she declared.

Barring a significant misstep, Democrats who control the Senate by the slimmest of margins intend to wrap up her confirmation before Easter. She would be the third Black justice, after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, as well as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson’s sternest Republican critics as well as her Democratic defenders all acknowledged the historic, barrier-breaking nature of her presence. There were frequent reminders that no Black woman had been nominated to the high court before her and repeated references to another unique aspect of her nomination: Jackson is the first former public defender nominated to be a justice.

“It’s not easy being the first. Often, you have to be the best, in some ways the bravest,” Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the committee chairman, said in support.

Democrats sought to preemptively rebut Republican criticism of her record on criminal matters as a judge and before that as a federal public defender and a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

Jackson “is not anti-law enforcement,” and is not “soft on crime,” Sen. Pat Leahy, D-Vt., said, noting that members of Jackson’s family have worked in law enforcement and that she has support from some national law enforcement organizations. ”Judge Jackson is no judicial activist.”

The committee’s senior Republican, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, promised Republicans would “ask tough questions about Jackson’s judicial philosophy,” without turning the hearings into a ”spectacle.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., noted that Democrats had opposed some past Republican judicial nominees who were Black or Hispanic, and he said that he and his GOP colleagues wouldn’t be deterred by Jackson’s race from asking probing questions.

He said of some criticism from the left: “It’s about, ‘We’re all racist if we ask hard questions.’ That’s not going to fly with us.”

Graham was one of three Republicans to support Jackson’s confirmation, 53-44, as an appellate judge last year. But he has indicated over the past several weeks that he is unlikely to vote for her again.

While few Republicans are likely to vote for her, most GOP senators did not aggressively criticize Jackson, whose confirmation would not change the court’s 6-3 conservative majority. Several Republicans used their time to denounce Senate Democrats instead of Jackson’s record.

The Republicans are trying to use her nomination to brand Democrats as soft on crime, an emerging theme in GOP midterm election campaigns. Biden has chosen several former public defenders for life-tenured judicial posts. In addition, Jackson served on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, an independent agency created by Congress to reduce disparity in federal prison sentences.

With Jackson silently taking notes, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said in his opening statement that his research showed that she had a pattern of issuing lower sentences in child pornography cases, repeating comments he wrote in a Twitter thread last week. The Republican National Committee echoed his claims, which Hawley did not raise when he questioned Jackson last year before voting against her appeals court confirmation.

The White House, along with several Democrats at the hearing, has rejected Hawley’s criticism as “toxic and weakly presented misinformation.”

Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones, who is guiding Jackson as she navigates the Senate process, told reporters afterward that “she will be the one to counter many of those questions” from Hawley and others on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hawley is one of several committee Republicans, along with Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who are potential 2024 presidential candidates, and their aspirations may collide with other Republicans who would prefer not to pursue a scorched-earth approach to Jackson’s nomination.

Her testimony will give most Americans, as well as the Senate, their most extensive look yet at the Harvard-trained lawyer with a broader resume than many nominees. She would be the first justice with significant criminal defense experience since Marshall.

Jackson appeared before the same committee last year, after Biden chose her to fill an opening on the federal appeals court in Washington, just down the hill from the Supreme Court.

The American Bar Association, which evaluates judicial nominees, has given her its highest rating, “well qualified.”

Biden chose Jackson in February, fulfilling a campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court for the first time in American history. She would take the seat of Justice Stephen Breyer, who announced in January that he would retire after 28 years on the court.

Jackson once worked as a law clerk to Breyer early in her legal career. She had special praise for her former boss, saying she could never fill his shoes. “But if confirmed, I would hope to carry on his spirit,” Jackson said.

She also expressed her thanks and love to her husband, Patrick Jackson, a surgeon in Washington who wiped away tears. Their two daughters, one in college and the other in high school, sat in the audience beside him. Her parents and in-laws also were in attendance.

Democrats are moving quickly to confirm Jackson, even though Breyer’s seat will not officially open until the summer. They have no votes to spare in a 50-50 Senate that they run by virtue of the tiebreaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.

While the focus was on the Senate hearings, the court was in session Monday, but one chair was was empty. The 73-year-old Thomas, the longest-serving justice, was in the hospital being treated for an infection, but he does not have COVID-19, the court said.

Kevin Durant talked about Kanye’s Jeen-Yuhs documentary on his ETC with Kevin Durant podcast.
He said two things stuck out to him while watching the documentary.
#1 how important Kanye is to his life. He said it was Kanye’s struggles of trying to get on and become a rapper and nobody taking him seriously.
The other thing that stuck out to him was the way Kanye predicted his life. He knew what he was about to do and he was calling everything out.
I get why Kanye is the way he is. We always talk about we want the old Kanye-he was just like this back then too-ranting, real confident.
What did you learn about Kanye while watching his documentary? What is the last documentary you watched?
