‘Maury’ Canceled After Three Decades On Air

NBC Universal syndicated talk show ‘Maury’ will wrap its 30 year run on air after its current season.

By Brooks Welch

NBC Universal syndicated talk show ‘Maury’ will wrap its 30 year run on air after its current season.

The mutual agreement between the talk show host and the studio was made when it was renewed in 202o for a 2021-2022 season.

In a recent statement to Deadline, Maury stated,”Six years ago when I was ready to retire, my NBCUniversal family asked me to continue the show,” says the legendary TV host. “Even though I told them I was ready for assisted living, out of loyalty to NBCUniversal and my more than 100 staff and crew members, Tracie Wilson and I agreed to one more deal. I’m so proud of my relationship with NBCUniversal and all those who worked on the Maury show but as I occasionally tell my guests on Maury, ‘Enough, already!’”

Tracie Wilson, the EVP of NBC Universal added, “Maury and I decided two years ago that this season would be the farewell season for the show, and while his retirement is bittersweet, we are so happy for him to be able to spend more time on the golf course.”

According to TV Line, Maury Povich began his career as a radio reporter in Washington D.C. before achieving national fame as the host of A Current Affair in 1986.

The legendary daytime television show, originally called ‘The Maury Povich Show,’ premiered in 1991 by Paramount Domestic Television. The name was shortened to Maury in the mid-1990s. In 1998, Studio USA took over the program, then acquired by NBCUniversal.

According to BET, new episodes will air through September 2022, which will then be followed by repeats of Maury which will air in syndication.

Tamron Hall Honors Wendy Williams For A Job Well Done

Tamron Hall, the host of the Tamron Hall Show, recently commended Wendy Williams for her daytime television career following Wendy Williams’ recent interview with T.J. Holmes of Good Morning America.

By Brooks Welch

Tamron Hall, host of the Tamron Hall Show, recently commended Wendy Williams for her daytime television career following Wendy Williams’ recent interview with T.J. Holmes of Good Morning America.

Before beginning her regular program, Hall spoke kindly of Williams to her audience.

“Wendy is another mom,” the daytime TV host said. “Another woman who created, executive produced and hosted her show. Wendy and I are currently the only two Black women who created, executive produce and solo host daytime shows on right now. And so when I saw her interview with T.J. [Holmes], it took my breath away because there’s been a lot of stories out there.” Hall went on to say that hearing Wendy share about her health was “powerful.”

According to Tamron’s official website, Hall and Williams are “the only two Black women who created, solo host, and executive produce their own shows on TV right now.”

While concluding her segment of gratitude for the legendary TV host, Hall added, “Wendy says that she needs about three months and she feels she will be back on TV. I know all of her co-hosts, her fans, like the Tam Fam, would root for me, are rooting for her.”

Historic Supreme Court Nomination Hearings Begin

Ketanji Brown Jackson would be the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice if confirmed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson pledged on Monday to decide cases “without fear or favor” if the Senate confirms her historic nomination as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson, 51, thanked God and professed love for “our country and the Constitution” in a 12-minute statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee at the end of her first day of confirmation hearings, nearly four hours almost entirely consumed by remarks from the panel’s 22 members.

Republicans promised pointed questions over the coming two days, with a special focus on her record on criminal matters. Democrats were full of praise for President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee.

With her family sitting behind her, her husband in socks bearing George Washington’s likeness, Jackson stressed that she has been independent, deciding cases “from a neutral posture” in her nine years as a judge, and that she is ever mindful of the importance of that role.

“I have dedicated my career to ensuring that the words engraved on the front of the Supreme Court building — equal justice under law — are a reality and not just an ideal,” she declared.

Barring a significant misstep, Democrats who control the Senate by the slimmest of margins intend to wrap up her confirmation before Easter. She would be the third Black justice, after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, as well as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson’s sternest Republican critics as well as her Democratic defenders all acknowledged the historic, barrier-breaking nature of her presence. There were frequent reminders that no Black woman had been nominated to the high court before her and repeated references to another unique aspect of her nomination: Jackson is the first former public defender nominated to be a justice.

“It’s not easy being the first. Often, you have to be the best, in some ways the bravest,” Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the committee chairman, said in support.

Democrats sought to preemptively rebut Republican criticism of her record on criminal matters as a judge and before that as a federal public defender and a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

Jackson “is not anti-law enforcement,” and is not “soft on crime,” Sen. Pat Leahy, D-Vt., said, noting that members of Jackson’s family have worked in law enforcement and that she has support from some national law enforcement organizations. ”Judge Jackson is no judicial activist.”

The committee’s senior Republican, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, promised Republicans would “ask tough questions about Jackson’s judicial philosophy,” without turning the hearings into a ”spectacle.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., noted that Democrats had opposed some past Republican judicial nominees who were Black or Hispanic, and he said that he and his GOP colleagues wouldn’t be deterred by Jackson’s race from asking probing questions.

He said of some criticism from the left: “It’s about, ‘We’re all racist if we ask hard questions.’ That’s not going to fly with us.”

Graham was one of three Republicans to support Jackson’s confirmation, 53-44, as an appellate judge last year. But he has indicated over the past several weeks that he is unlikely to vote for her again.

While few Republicans are likely to vote for her, most GOP senators did not aggressively criticize Jackson, whose confirmation would not change the court’s 6-3 conservative majority. Several Republicans used their time to denounce Senate Democrats instead of Jackson’s record.

The Republicans are trying to use her nomination to brand Democrats as soft on crime, an emerging theme in GOP midterm election campaigns. Biden has chosen several former public defenders for life-tenured judicial posts. In addition, Jackson served on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, an independent agency created by Congress to reduce disparity in federal prison sentences.

With Jackson silently taking notes, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said in his opening statement that his research showed that she had a pattern of issuing lower sentences in child pornography cases, repeating comments he wrote in a Twitter thread last week. The Republican National Committee echoed his claims, which Hawley did not raise when he questioned Jackson last year before voting against her appeals court confirmation.

The White House, along with several Democrats at the hearing, has rejected Hawley’s criticism as “toxic and weakly presented misinformation.”

Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones, who is guiding Jackson as she navigates the Senate process, told reporters afterward that “she will be the one to counter many of those questions” from Hawley and others on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hawley is one of several committee Republicans, along with Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who are potential 2024 presidential candidates, and their aspirations may collide with other Republicans who would prefer not to pursue a scorched-earth approach to Jackson’s nomination.

Her testimony will give most Americans, as well as the Senate, their most extensive look yet at the Harvard-trained lawyer with a broader resume than many nominees. She would be the first justice with significant criminal defense experience since Marshall.

Jackson appeared before the same committee last year, after Biden chose her to fill an opening on the federal appeals court in Washington, just down the hill from the Supreme Court.

The American Bar Association, which evaluates judicial nominees, has given her its highest rating, “well qualified.”

Biden chose Jackson in February, fulfilling a campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court for the first time in American history. She would take the seat of Justice Stephen Breyer, who announced in January that he would retire after 28 years on the court.

Jackson once worked as a law clerk to Breyer early in her legal career. She had special praise for her former boss, saying she could never fill his shoes. “But if confirmed, I would hope to carry on his spirit,” Jackson said.

She also expressed her thanks and love to her husband, Patrick Jackson, a surgeon in Washington who wiped away tears. Their two daughters, one in college and the other in high school, sat in the audience beside him. Her parents and in-laws also were in attendance.

Democrats are moving quickly to confirm Jackson, even though Breyer’s seat will not officially open until the summer. They have no votes to spare in a 50-50 Senate that they run by virtue of the tiebreaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.

While the focus was on the Senate hearings, the court was in session Monday, but one chair was was empty. The 73-year-old Thomas, the longest-serving justice, was in the hospital being treated for an infection, but he does not have COVID-19, the court said.

Kevin Durant Shares ‘Profound’ Kanye West Revelations From ‘Jeen-Yuhs’ Documentary

Kevin Durant talked about Kanye’s Jeen-Yuhs documentary on his ETC with Kevin Durant podcast.
He said two things stuck out to him while watching the documentary.
#1 how important Kanye is to his life. He said it was Kanye’s struggles of trying to get on and become a rapper and nobody taking him seriously.
The other thing that stuck out to him was the way Kanye predicted his life. He knew what he was about to do and he was calling everything out.
I get why Kanye is the way he is. We always talk about we want the old Kanye-he was just like this back then too-ranting, real confident.
What did you learn about Kanye while watching his documentary? What is the last documentary you watched?

Final Goodbye to Former WHUR PD Jesse Fax

Former WHUR Program Director Jesse Fax will be remembered tomorrow at a special memorial service in Clinton, Maryland.

Washington, D.C. (Friday, March 18, 2022) – Family, colleagues, and friends are set to gather Saturday, March 19th at 12:30 p.m. at Wiseman Funeral Home & Chapel in Clinton, Maryland to say a final farewell to former 96.3 WHUR Program Director and Radio Personality Jesse Fax.  Fax passed away Monday, February 21st at the age of 78 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

“We were very sad to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Jesse Fax.  At WHUR, we consider all who have worked here to be forever family members.  Mr. Fax was a major contributor to the rich history and legacy of WHUR.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all those who loved him,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

Fax was a mainstay at WHUR in the late 1970s and 1980s.  He could be heard weekday mornings from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. helping to keep listeners informed, entertained, and engaged about the latest happenings locally, nationally, and globally.   An avid reader and movie buff, Fax was a story teller and would have his listeners glued to the radio as he shared his views on music, politics, relationships, and the latest Hollywood movie.

A native Washingtonian and graduate of Howard University, Fax loved learning and teaching.  You would often find him “holding court” with a small crowd of people standing around him to simply absorb the wisdom he would impart on anyone listening.  His keen sense of business and radio eventually propelled Fax to the position of Program Director where he managed all of the on-air talent and placed WHUR on the pathway to broadcasting excellence.

Fax was known for his interviewing techniques too.  He would chat it up with all the stars like they were old friends, including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Parliament Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye, and many more.  He also had a way with the politicians too.  DC Mayor Marion Barry was a frequent guest.

Fax would later take his gifts and talents to the education system, which really didn’t surprise many because he was always teaching.  Fax became an English teacher at Suitland High School and went on to become the assistant principal at Bowie High School where he retired in 2017.

If you really wanted to get Fax talking non-stop, ask him about a Western.  “He knew every scene from every movie ever produced.  His wisdom was vast and legendary.  Plus he just had a commanding voice that made you want to pay attention,” said WHUR producer Bobby Adams.

Fax is survived by his wife Dr. Theresa Ann Moseley-Fax, daughter Allison Haynes, grandchildren Tre Moseley, Shawn Gates, Jaide Howard, Aliyah and Amaris Love, and a host of other family members and friends.

Jesse Fax gone.  But never forgotten.  Take your forever seat at the Mic our Radio Brother.

Race, Racism and Public School Education

Addressing race and racism after hate crime charges are filed against students in Frederick County, Maryland.

Last week… three eighth graders at Middletown Middle School in Frederick County were charged with hate crimes.  They posted video threats of deadly violence against black students on social media.  One of the three boys is also facing a gun charge.  This incident has frightened and galvanized students and parents.  But it raises a lot of questions about racism and how children view race in school.

NC School District Updating Policies After ‘Slave Auction’

Students said they witnessed a “slave auction” at a school.

PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina schools superintendent has apologized for a mock “slave auction” in which white middle-schoolers pretended to sell their Black classmates.

“Actions such as these, they just do not reflect who we are as a school system,” Chatham County Schools Superintendent Anthony Jackson said after parents raised an outcry. “And I say, unapologetically, will not be tolerated in the school system.”

The school board adopted some policy changes and will also review the student code of conduct and discipline policies involving acts of racism, Jackson said. Some parents complained that several students involved were given just a one-day suspension.

J.S. Waters School, Chatham, North Carolina

A coalition of local groups called on the board Monday to address the situation at the J.S. Waters School in Goldston and require the instigators to apologize, news outlets reported

The mock auction happened in the presence of staff and faculty and was recorded on video, according to a Chatham Organizing For Racial Equity press release. The K-8 school about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Raleigh has 195 students, and 68% are white.

The move is designed to beef-up waning immunity against the coronavirus that apparently occurs several months after the first booster.

Meantime, reports indicate the Food and Drug Administration plans to convene outside advisors early next month to mull over whether or not there should be an October or November campaign to push for all adults to get additional boosters.

Gas Prices, Inflation and You

What can you do to blunt the impact of the economic crisis?

Have you checked out the price of gas lately?  I bet you have and nobody is happy about it.  The cost of a gallon of regular gas is creeping expensively and disrespectfully close to five dollars a gallon in the DMV. In other parts of the country prices are well over six dollars per gallon.  That’s not all.  Inflation is at a 40-year-high with no signs of slowing.  What’s going on and what can you do to blunt the sting of more money going out than you can afford?

We talk to Maryland State Senator Arthur Ellis about how the county is changing.

If you’re over 30 and grew up in the DMV, you’ve known Charles County as a sleepy, distant rural county down there somewhere.  It is far from that now.  The population has exploded.  According to U.S. census reports, the population has grown by 20-thousand people every ten years since 1990. With that growth has come growing pains.  We talk to Maryland State Senator Arthur Ellis about how the county is changing.

New Quarterback For Washington Commanders

Colts agree to trade Carson Wentz to Commanders

The Indianapolis Colts are moving on from Carson Wentz after one season, sending him to a team he’s familiar with from his days in the NFC East.

The Colts agreed to trade Wentz to the Washington Commanders, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the deal cannot be finalized until the start of the new league year next week.

It was not immediately clear what the Commanders gave up in their latest attempt to get a franchise quarterback. ESPN reported two third-round picks were involved.

Wentz, 29, has three years remaining on his contract with salary cap hits of $28.3, $26.2 and $27.2 million consecutively. The 2016 second overall pick of the Philadelphia Eagles spent just the 2021 season with Indianapolis, with the team going 9-8 and missing the playoffs.

Henry “Enrique” Tarrio charged with conspiracy in Capitol riot.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A leader of the far-right Proud Boys extremist group was arrested Tuesday on a conspiracy charge for his suspected role in a coordinated attack on the U.S. Capitol to stop Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral victory.

Proud Boys Leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio

Henry “Enrique” Tarrio wasn’t there when the riot erupted on Jan. 6, 2021. Police had arrested Tarrio in Washington two days before the riot and charged him with vandalizing a Black Lives Matter banner at a historic Black church during a protest in December 2020. The day before the Capitol was attacked, a judge ordered Tarrio to stay out of Washington.

But Tarrio didn’t leave town as he should have, the indictment said. Instead, he met with Oath Keepers founder and leader Elmer “Stewart” Rhodes and others in an underground parking garage for approximately 30 minutes.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the blockbuster trade, which is pending Wilson passing a physical, can’t become official until the start of the new league year on March 16.

Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers

Denver was seen as the front-runner for Aaron Rodgers before the two-time reigning MVP agreed to stay in Green Bay as the highest-paid player in NFL history. Then the Broncos landed a Super Bowl-winning quarterback anyway, and one who’s five years younger than Rodgers, who is 38.

But Rodgers is pushing back on reports that he has agreed to a massive new contract. The Super Bowl champion tweeted those reports aren’t true.

The NFL Network reported the Seahawks agreed to send Wilson and a fourth-round pick to Denver in exchange for two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-rounder, along with quarterback Drew Lock, defensive end Shelby Harris and tight end Noah Fant.
