Toxic Friendships

How do you know if your friends are toxic? What do you do about them?

They are our ride or die. Some we talk to everyday. Others are there for us in a pinch. We’re talking about our friends.  Not all friends are created equal.  Sometimes, whether you know it or not, they don’t always have your best interests at heart.  Some of them could even be called toxic friends. How do you know?  How does that happen?  What do you do about toxic friends?

Cynthia Bailey Admits Friendship With Kenya Moore Needs Repairing

Real Housewives of Atlanta stars Cynthia Bailey and Kenya Moore are repairing their friendship after filming ‘The Ultimate Girls Trip.’

By Brooks Welch

Stars of Real Housewives of Atlanta Cynthia Bailey and Kenya Moore are repairing their friendship after filming ‘The Ultimate Girls Trip.’

According to People, Bailey made an appearance on Andy Cohen’s ‘Watch What Happens,’ where she stated, “We are not like we were before the girls trip. Again, I will always have love in my heart for Kenya. Relationships and friendships go up and down, and it’s really tough to — I’ve learned — to maintain healthy relationships when you work together on a platform like this sometimes.”

Bailey assured that she still loves Kenya and is cheering on the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ contestant, however they are “not where [they] used to be.”

‘The Ultimate Girls Trip’ was a cross-over of the Real Housewives franchises. In typical Real Housewives fashion, drama broke out amongst the women and Bailey felt that Moore did not defend her during multiple instances with the other cast members. This was contrary to Moore’s perspective, she believes she supported Bailey (via People).

Bailey stated that two friends have spoken recently and come to an agreement that their friendship needs some work.

Prince’s Estate Bars Use Of Name ‘Morris Day And The Time’

According to Pitchfork, The Prince Estate has barred Morris Day from using the band name ‘Morris Day And The Time’ in any capacity, a name that the Minneapolis funk artist has used for the last 40 years.

By Brooks Welch

The Prince Estate has barred Morris Day from using the band name ‘Morris Day And The Time’ in any capacity, a name that the Minneapolis funk artist has used for the last 40 years, Pitchfork reports.

According to Ultimate Prince, in 1981, The Time was Prince’s first venture of building a band and Prince did so around Day, a friend of his since high school. While Prince kept rights to the band name, The Time released four albums from 1981 to 1990. The group disbanded in the early 90s then returned as Morris Day And The Time with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis among the band members.

Day released this statement on Thursday regarding the devastating news, “I’ve given 40 years of my life building up a name and legacy that Prince and I came up with. A name that while he was alive, he had no problem with me using,” The artist said. “I literally put my blood, sweat, and tears into bringing value to that name. In fact, he booked me on several tours, and many jam packed nights at Paisley Park, under the name Morris Day & The Time. Not once ever saying to me that I couldn’t use that name configuration.”

He also stated that since the late Prince no longer has say, his estate holders desire to “rewrite history.” He noted that this will impact his income and his family, but he will be compliant.

The estate issued a statement saying they were “surprised and disappointed” by Day’s recent post and denied his claims. “The Estate is open to working proactively with Morris to resolve this matter. However, the information that he shared is not entirely accurate.”

According to Billboard, Day signed a 1982 agreement that gave Prince rights to his name.

There is a possibility for Day to make an agreement to license his name back from the estate.

Mary J Blige To Executive Produce Lifetime Film Inspired By ‘Real Love’

Mary J Blige is in the works with Lifetime to executive produce a movie inspired by her 90s R&B hit ‘Real Love.’

By Brooks Welch

GRAMMY Award winning Mary J. Blige is in the works with Lifetime to executive produce a movie inspired by her 90s R&B hit ‘Real Love.’

According to Variety, “Real Love” was Blige’s first song to hit the Top 10 and was certified gold two months after its release in 1992. The song was produced by Cory Rooney and Mark Morales.

According to Deadline, the film, written by Sonja Warfield and Rachel Ingram, is a coming-of-age romantic drama centering around Kendra, who sets off on her own for the first time to a college in upstate New York, determined to focus on her studies. But when she meets her film class partner Ben, she tries her hardest to keep things professional. Despite disapproving parents, financial hardship, and competition for the top spot in class, Kendra and Ben find themselves falling hard for each other and ultimately learn the meaning of real love.

In a statement released Wednesday, Blige said, “I wrote ‘Real Love’ based on my real life experiences and my fans connected to it in a deeply personal way. It’s exciting to now use this song and my music to create a new story by way of film, continuing to build on a pillar of the foundation of my production company, Blue Butterfly,” The singer stated. “My passions for acting and music now include developing diverse stories with music as the backdrop. I am grateful to Lifetime for their partnership in the story of ‘Real Love.”

This isn’t the first of Blige’s producer credits. Last year she joined Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot to executive produce the Clark Sister’s Lifetime biopic ‘The Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel’ in 2020. Also within the last year, Blige executive produced her acclaimed Amazon Prime documentary ‘Mary J. Blige’s My Life.’ Blige recently performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar.

The premiere date for ‘Real Love’ has yet to be released.

‘Cort Broadway Theater’ Renamed ‘James Earl Jones Theater’

According to CNBC, As of March 2nd, 2022, The Shubert Organization’s Cort Theatre on Broadway is renamed The James Earl Jones Theater after the 91 year old, EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) winner, legendary thespian James Earl Jones.

By Brooks Welch

According to CNBC, As of March 2nd, 2022, The Shubert Organization’s Cort Theatre on Broadway is renamed The James Earl Jones Theater after the 91 year old, EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) winner, legendary thespian James Earl Jones.

On Wednesday, The Shubert Organization issued a press release announcing their decision to name the 110 year old theatre after James Earl Jones, with remarks from the Shubert CEO and James Earl Jones.

“The Shubert Organization is so incredibly honored to put James—an icon in the theatre community, the Black community, and the American community—forever in Broadway’s lights,” said Robert E. Wankel, Shubert CEO and board chair. “That James deserves to have his name immortalized on Broadway is without question.”

Jones shared his gratitude for the honor, “For me, standing in this very building 64 years ago at the start of my Broadway career, it would have been inconceivable that my name would be on the building today,” said the legendary actor. “Let my journey from then to now be an inspiration for all aspiring actors.”

The press release reported, “Mr. Jones’s Broadway career began in 1957, and in 1958 Mr. Jones played his first role at the Cort Theatre in Sunrise at Campobello. Over the following six-and-a-half decades Mr. Jones rose to star in countless stage and screen productions (including twenty-one Broadway shows), becoming one of a small number of lifetime “EGOT” (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winners. Mr. Jones’s Tony awards include Best Actor in a Play for The Great White Hope (1969) and Fences (1987), as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. He has additionally won seven Drama Desk Awards and has been awarded the National Medal of Arts and the Kennedy Center Honor.”

According to New York Post, this honor is a full circle moment as The Cort is where Jones made his debut in 1958’s “Sunrise at the Campobello.”

The outlet reported that Jones joins a rare group of actors with Broadway theaters taking their names: Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, Ethel Barrymore and Edwin Booth. Most theaters named after producers and financial investors.

Apartment Explosion In Silver Spring

More than a dozen people are hurt.

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — Ten people were taken to hospitals, including several people with serious injuries, after an explosion and fire at a Maryland apartment building Thursday morning, a fire official said.

Firefighters responded around 10:30 a.m. after 911 callers reported an explosion at the four-story building in Silver Spring, less than a mile north of Washington, D.C., Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service Chief Scott Goldstein said during a news conference.

Charred rubble is seen after an apartment building collapsed after an explosion this morning in Silver Spring, Md., Thursday, March, 3, 2022. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service reports that multiple people were critically hurt in the fire that started at about 10:30 a.m. at a four-story building at the Friendly Garden Apartments in Silver Spring, Md. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

Crews arriving on the scene found significant fire and evidence of an explosion, Goldstein said. They immediately went to work battling the flames and helped several people get out before the building was completely consumed by fire and there was a collapse, he said. Crews brought 10 people to local hospitals, he said. Several people had serious injuries and others had injuries that were more minor, he said.

There were still pockets of fire in the building after noon, he said. People were evacuated from adjacent buildings and he said the structural damage could be significant. Crews were searching the buildings a second time to make sure no one was missed.

It’s not known how many people are unaccounted for and how many people will be displaced, Goldstein said.

It’s not clear where the fire began and too early to say how it started, he said.

About 150 personnel from across the region responded to battle the blaze, Goldstein said.

“It’s kind of scary looking at the extent of the explosion and it’s hard not to imagine the impact it’s had on people,” Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said. “It’s definitely a tough day.”

2022 Charter Day Convocation Orator: Congressman Gregory W. Meeks

https://youtu.be/XwvKa_rVFsE

WASHINGTON – Howard University is pleased to welcome alumnus Congressman Gregory W. Meeks as the orator for the 2022 Charter Day Convocation on Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m. in Cramton Auditorium. Charter Day Convocation is open to the public.

Each year, the Charter Day Convocation ceremony commemorates the signing of Howard’s federal charter on March 2, 1867, establishing Howard as a university. Meeks is focused on revitalizing the economy, creating jobs and enhancing the resiliency of New York’s 5th District’s transportation, housing and environmental infrastructure, which were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.

Throughout his tenure in Congress, Meeks has fought to make New York City accessible and full of opportunity for all New Yorkers. One result of Meeks’ tireless efforts came to fruition in April of 2017, at the groundbreaking ceremony of the “Crossing at Jamaica Station.” The housing and retail project, which will bring approximately 4,000 construction jobs to Jamaica, N.Y., includes hundreds of new affordable residential units. To make this crucial economic development possible, Meeks secured $21 million in federal tax credits.

Meeks, now in his 13th term, has devoted his energy and skill to serving one of the most diverse constituencies in the nation. His efforts on behalf of his district, New York City and New York state, and the nation as a whole have earned Meeks the respect of his constituents, New Yorkers, and Democrats and Republicans alike. He is known for being an effective, principled and common-sense leader. As a fervent supporter of the Affordable Care Act enacted under President Obama, Meeks believes that it should be enhanced. Meeks is also part of the forward-thinking, pro-growth Democratic members who comprise the New Democrat Coalition (NDC), the largest ideological caucus in Congress.

Additionally, Congressman Meeks is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the first black Member of Congress to serve as chair of that committee. Meeks is a multilateralist with decades of experience in foreign policy. He believes that the United States should build coalitions around our interests and work with other countries to build a stable and prosperous future.

Key provisions in the Wall Street reform law – including its stress testing requirement, the creation of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion at the financial regulatory agencies, and the requirement that U.S. public companies who use natural resources to report their due diligence in stamping out conflict minerals – were co-authored by Meeks and remain in the law today. Meeks introduced a bill that would require government contractors and public companies to submit data on the racial, ethnic and gender composition of their corporate boards.

Meeks is a member of the Allen AME Church in St. Albans, New York and a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. As a huge sports fan, Meeks enjoys watching the New York Knicks, the New York Giants and the New York Mets. He is married to Simone-Marie Meeks and has three daughters – Ebony, Aja and Nia-Aiyana.

The March 4 convocation sets the stage for this year’s Charter Day Virtual Celebration. Traditionally a black-tie gala, the virtual celebration will be a fundraising event with the proceeds supporting financial aid for Howard students.

In compliance with the District of Columbia’s Vaccination DC policy, all guests ages 12 years and older are required to show proof of vaccination to enter Cramton Auditorium.

Ketanji Brown-Jackson Meets With Senators

Senate hearings for high court nominee to begin on March 21

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate Judiciary Committee said Wednesday that confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson will begin March 21, keeping the Senate on track for a possible final vote next month.

Sen. Dick Durbin, the committee chairman, announced the hearing schedule on Wednesday as Jackson was holding her first meetings with senators on Capitol Hill. Jackson met in the morning with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. She planned to see Durbin and the committee’s top Republican, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, in the afternoon.

As is tradition, the hearings will last four days, with opening statements March 21 and testimony and questioning the next two days. The fourth day will include testimony from outside witnesses.

If confirmed, Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve as a justice in the court’s 200-plus year history. Breyer has said he won’t leave the bench until this summer, when the court’s session is over, but Democrats are still moving quickly, taking no chances in case there is any shift in a 50-50 Senate where Vice President Kamala Harris provides the deciding vote.

PG Family Waiting Son’s Return from Ukraine

The love of basketball sent a Prince George’s County man to Ukraine to live out his dream. But the Russian invasion briefly turned his dream into a nightmare.

Upper Marlboro, MD (Tuesday, March 1, 2022) – Mike and Pam Morgan are counting the hours until their 31-year-old son Maurice Creek makes a safe return home from war torn Ukraine.  He’s been in the Russian invaded country playing basketball, but his sports dream quickly turned into a nightmare last Thursday.

“We don’t watch a lot of news so when I got a call that the war was underway in Ukraine my heart sank,” said Pam Morgan.  She alerted her husband and they quickly called their son (Maurice) to tell him that he needed to get a flight and get out of Ukraine.  Unfortunately, it was too late.  The airports had already been targeted and roadways were flooded.

“He told us that his coach advised them to wait it out in their apartments.  I said we need a plan B and I started frantically making calls to get my son home.”  Creek was able to get a ride out of Mykolav,Ukraine on Tuesday.

While Maurice Creek, is still not back to his Upper Marlboro, Maryland home; he has been able to safely get to Budapest, Hungary.  Creek is scheduled to fly into Dulles International Airport Thursday.

The Morgans say they had been working for weeks to get their son out of Ukraine.  But the Municipal Basketball Club in Mykolav, Ukraine wanted Creek to stay because he was helping them to win games.  The Morgans believe the team focused more on winning games than her son’s safety.

While the Morgans are thankful for a happy ending to their nightmare, they say the ordeal has left them emotionally and financially drained.  They have set up a GoFund me page https://gofund.me/d8995725 and other accounts to help with expenses.  Their Zelle and CashApp account number  is 240-705-2933.

50 Cent Threatens To Leave STARZ

If you’ve seen 50 Cent’s social media lately, he’s not happy with the Starz network. The rapper, factory, and producer indicated that things were so bad that he was leaving the network.
“They renewed High Town, and FORCE is the highest-rated show they have in limbo,” 50 said in a recent Instagram post. “If I told you how much dumb sh*t I deal with over here, you would think they all went to school on a small yellow bus.” He later posted for his team to pack up everything and take the G-Unit Film and TV sign down from their offices.
Fif’s G-Unit Films and TV company produce the Top 4 programs in African-American households with Force, Raising Kanan, BMF, and Power: Ghost.
Do you believe that 50 will really leave Starz?

Disney Plus Is Now to Home to Former Netflix MCU Shows

Former Marvel shows that were once seen on Netflix will be moving over to Disney Plus.
On March 16, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Defenders, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be moving to Disney Plus.
Before you ask, I don’t know whether that means new episodes are on the way.

By Brooks Welch

Today is National Read Across America Day. In celebration, here’s five books written by contemporary Black authors that you should check out:

How Stella Got Her Groove Back by Terry McMillan

“How Stella Got Her Groove Back” is full of Terry McMillan’s signature humor, heart, and insight. More than a love story, it is ultimately a novel about how a woman saves her own life—and what she must risk to do it.”

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

“From The New York Times-bestselling author of The Mothers, a stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white.”

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

“A striking and surprising debut novel from an exhilarating new voice, Such a Fun Age is a page-turning and big-hearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both.”

Memorial by Bryan Washington

“A funny and profound story about family in all its strange forms, joyful and hard-won vulnerability, becoming who you’re supposed to be, and the limits of love.”

The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates

“This is the dramatic story of an atrocity inflicted on generations of women, men, and children—the violent and capricious separation of families—and the war they waged to simply make lives with the people they loved. Written by one of today’s most exciting thinkers and writers, The Water Dancer is a propulsive, transcendent work that restores the humanity of those from whom everything was stolen.”

5 Inspiring Quotes From Women Making History Now

March is National Women’s History Month, here’s some facts about how it came to be.

By Brooks Welch

March is National Women’s History Month, here’s some facts about how it came to be. According to the official site for National Women’s History Month, the celebration began as a week organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. It was then declared a month-long holiday for March of 1987 only and the annual celebration of Women’s History Month officially began in 1995.

According to History.com, the National Women’s History Alliance selects an annual focus for Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” This theme is “both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.”

We celebrate Women’s History Month because it’s a “dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States history. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States.”

This month commemorates the strength, resilience, and determination of all women.

Here’s 5 inspiring quotes from women who are making history now:

Kamala Harris, the first African American and woman to be vice-president of the United States

“There will be people who say to you, ‘You are out of your lane.’ They are burdened by only having the capacity to see what has always been instead of what can be. But don’t you let that burden you.”

Michelle Obama, the first Black first lady of the United States.

“You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.

Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to be nominated on the highest court in the nation — the Supreme Court.

“I must begin these very brief remarks by thanking God for delivering me to this point in my professional journey. My life has been blessed beyond measure and I do know that one can only come this far by faith.”

Marsai Martin, 17-year-old actress on ‘Black-ish,’ founder of Genius Productions, and businesswoman

“You’re gonna get a lot of nos more than yeses, but you have to find the right people who trust in you and believe in you and will continue to work with you because you’ve got potential.”

Kizzmekia Corbetta senior research fellow who worked on the COVID-19 Vaccine.

“If you can unwind and be true to who you are, it helps to reckon with things. My team is responding to the world’s most devastating global pandemic in the last hundred years. And so, there’s something to be said about knowing who you are.”

Dame Dash Isn’t Opposed to A Roc-A-Fella Biopic, On His Terms

By Brooks Welch

Dame Dash, entrepreneur and record label executive for Roc-A-Fella alongside Jay-Z and Kareem Burke, is open to the idea of a Roc-A-Fella biopic.

After the release of Coodie & Chike’s docu-series ‘Jeen-Yuhs’ about the rise of rapper Kanye West’s career, Dame Dash is highly sought after for his reaction to the Netflix series. The first two episodes of the docu-series chronicle West’s hustle to be a signed rapper at Roc-A-Fella, Dash was the executive to do so eventually in 2002.

In a recent interview with theJasmineBRAND, Dash revealed that the biopic about the label would have to be done on his terms.

“There’s a time and a place for everything,” The executive said. “So, if the time and the place is a place I don’t own and a time that I don’t enjoy, then I’m not doing it. But on my terms, I’m gonna do everything. But it’s got to be on my terms or it doesn’t get done.” Dash says plainly. He also added that the actor who plays him must be “superiorly cool.”

In 2018, during an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Anderson explained the reason for his dropping out of college initially. “I was paying for college myself, and I ran out of money after my Junior year,” Anderson told Fallon.

On The Real talk show earlier this week, Anthony Anderson spoke to Loni Love and Garcelle Beauvais about how close he is to being an alumni of Howard University. Well, you’re 15 credits away from getting your degree. Are you going to finish or what?” To which Anderson replied, “I am going to finish this Spring.”

Helping Hands Radiothon Raises $92K

Washington, D.C. (Sunday, March 27, 2022) – Mission accomplished.  More than 400 Howard University students are preparing to make their way to 15 destinations across the country to render service to communities in need during their Alternative Spring Break (ASB).  Their mission has been secured thanks to the hundreds of donors who gave to the 17th Annual WHUR Helping Hand Radiothon.

This year’s  12-hour radiothon Sunday, February 27th took in over $92,000 from generous WHUR listeners who gave on line at www.whur.com and those who stopped by or near the radio station to drop off cash and checks with the Howard University student bucket brigade. “Time and time again we see our listeners respond to the call to give in such an unselfish way.  These donated dollars will go a long way to get the Howard students to the various locations so they can help communities in crisis,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.
