Former Minneapolis Police Officer Testifies In Floyd Civil Rights Case

The families filed suit against Remington, maker of the Bushmaster AR-15. That was the weapon used in the 2012 killing spree that left 20 first graders and six educators dead.
The families and a survivor of the shooting sued Remington in 2015, arguing Remington should have never sold such a dangerous weapon to the public. The Connecticut civil court case focused on how the firearm was marketed, alleging it targeted younger at-risk males in marketing and product placement in violent video games.
After murdering his mother at their home, 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut before taking his own life. It was one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

#BelAir isn’t just a “remake”. It’s a retelling of a familiar story.
The show reflects on so many nuanced experiences within black families that we never would have seen on television years ago.

Bel-Air review – this confused, joyless Fresh Prince remake has no reason to exist https://t.co/1yoOCFEAmR
— The Guardian (@guardian) February 14, 2022
The series has large shoes to fill and high expectations. As a cultural phenomenon for Black audiences, it’s understandable why there’s apprehension.
Reactions from original cast members were scarce, only Will Smith, producer of ‘Bel Air‘ and Joseph Marcell, who plays Geoffrey the Butler on the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, attended the premiere.
Audiences may feel more connected to the reboot if they knew the story behind its conception. As written in Will Smith’s YouTube caption, “3 years ago, my guy Morgan Cooper [Los Angeles based writer and director] uploaded his fan trailer to YouTube, showing how he envisioned the Fresh Prince as a drama. Now, here is the first full look at his retelling of the story that’s always been so close to my heart.”
‘Bel Air’ is streaming exclusively on Peacock. New episodes premiering every Thursday.

It’s Black History Month, but some may argue it’s Black Future Month.
Carnegie Hall is hosting a two-month Afrofuturism Festival from mid February to early April. Afrofuturism is a concept simplified on Carnegie’s website as “an ever-expansive aesthetic and practice—where music, visual arts, science fiction, and technology intersect to imagine alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures.” Artists like Sun Ra Arkestra (performers at the festival), Parliament Funkadelic, Janelle Monae, and Solange Knowles have made contributions to the concept. Films like the 1982 feature ‘Brother from Another Planet’ and Marvel’s 2018 ‘Black Panther’ have also pushed Afrofuturism forward. The festival’s curational council is made of five Black Afrofuturism experts. The festival will consist of over 80 events with over 70 partners to pull off the celebration of astro-Blackness.
The two-month citywide Afrofuturism Festival begins on February 15th, ending April 10th.

Black love and the key to keeping it alive and vibrant.

Masks will still be required in various places including schools and healthcare facilities.

A flight from LA to DC made an emergency landing after a passenger attempted to break into the planes cockpit, as well as open a door to the aircraft while it was in the air.
The passenger was subdued by crew members and other passengers. He was taken into custody after the flight landed. In a statement, American Airlines said the flight, American Airlines Flight 1775, landed safely in Kansas City, where law enforcement officials met the plane. Charles A. Dayoub, an F.B.I. special agent in charge in Kansas City, said in a statement that the passenger was taken into custody after “interfering with the flight crew.”
Stacy Day, a spokeswoman for the airline, said that the passenger was “ultimately subdued by our crew and with the help of other passengers.”
The man at the center of the altercation, who appeared to be middle-aged, seemed distraught and paranoid, Mr. Rojas said. Earlier in the flight, he added, others saw the passenger pace the aisles.
“When I went up, it looked like the guy was trying to open the exterior door of the plane to the outside,” Mr. Rojas said. “So we were kind of keeping him from doing that and just trying to subdue him and make sure that he was taken down and everybody was OK.”
Mouaz Moustafa, a passenger from Washington, described a chaotic scene as the plane started descending into Kansas City without warning after the struggle with the passenger.
He said the man tried to get into the cockpit and then tried to exit via the main door before he was held down by several passengers.
“A flight attendant ran to the back of the plane and got the coffee pot and continues to bash the guy on the head,” Mr. Moustafa said in an interview as the plane was being held on the tarmac. The man was “bleeding profusely,” he added. “I honestly thought today I might die,” he said.
Ultimately, it took three flight attendants and three passengers, including Mr. Rojas, to restrain the man, move him to the floor and then bind his hands and ankles with tape and zip ties provided by the flight attendants, Mr. Rojas said. The passenger remained on the floor for about 15 minutes until the plane landed and the authorities collected him, Mr. Rojas said.
As Mr. Moustafa, 37, was being interviewed by phone from his seat, the pilot came by and talked to the passengers about how the man had tried and failed to open the cockpit door.
Disturbances on flights have surged during the coronavirus pandemic, and many of the incidents have involved passengers who disagree with mask mandates.
Last year, the Federal Aviation Administration conducted more than 1,000 investigations of unruly passengers — more than in the previous seven years combined.
Karen Maria Alston, who lives in Washington, said she was sitting in the 17th row of the plane watching the movie “Dune” when she saw some men rush into the first-class section. She was not able to see what was happening, she said, but the commotion and the plane’s ensuing descent were frightening and “extremely stressful.”
“I need a drink and I am so thankful,” Ms. Alston said in a text message after the plane landed in Kansas City.
Then, told to disembark, the passengers waited for about three hours in the Kansas City airport, unwinding from their tense shared experience and celebrating the three passengers who intervened.
Mr. Rojas and other passengers huddled around a little television by a bar, unwinding and watching the Super Bowl, “just making the best out of the situation,” he said.
Three hours later, they were back on the plane headed to Washington.

Prosecutors in the trial of Minneapolis police officers accused of violating George Floyd’s civil rights will reportedly rest their case today.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — After nearly three weeks of testimony, federal prosecutors planned to rest their case Monday against three former Minneapolis police officers who are charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights.
Once the prosecution rests in the trial of J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, defense attorneys will start presenting their witnesses. The attorney for Lane has said his client will testify. Attorneys for Thao and Kueng haven’t said if they will.
The officers are charged with violating Floyd’s constitutional rights while acting under government authority. All three are accused of depriving Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, of medical care while he was handcuffed, facedown as Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee onto Floyd’s neck for 9 1/2 minutes. Kueng, who is Black, knelt on Floyd’s back; Lane, who is white, held down his legs; and Thao, who is Hmong American, kept bystanders back.
Kueng and Thao are also accused of failing to intervene to stop the May 25, 2020, killing, which triggered protests worldwide and a reexamination of racism and policing.
The charges allege that the officers’ actions resulted in Floyd’s death.
Prosecutors began presenting their case on Jan. 24. The trial has included testimony from bystanders, doctors, police officers, an FBI agent and others. Prosecutors also have played bystander and body camera videos that show Floyd being restrained and eventually becoming motionless before being put into an ambulance.
Testimony has included information about police training, and what the officers should have known about their duty to intervene and their responsibility to provide Floyd with medical care.
Despite efforts to keep the case on track, Judge Paul Magnuson ordered a three-day pause after one of the defendants tested positive for COVID-19.
One of the prosecution’s key arguments has been that the officers were trained to provide medical aid in emergencies, and that Floyd’s situation had become so serious that even bystanders, including children with no medical training, knew something was wrong.
On Friday, Alyssa Funari testified that when she saw three officers on top of a man in the street, she parked her car and started recording because she had a “gut feeling” something was wrong.
“I instantly knew that he was in distress. … He was moving, making facial expressions that he was in pain,” said Funari, who was 17 at the time and is now 19. “He was telling us that he was in pain.”
“I observed that over time he was slowly being less vocal and he was closing his eyes,” she added. “He wasn’t able to tell us that he was in pain anymore. He was just accepting it.”
Prosecutors also showed snippets of bystander and police video with timelines and transcripts as Matthew Vogel, an FBI special agent, described the materials. The timelines and transcripts were meant to help jurors sort out the sometimes confusing videos that show a chaotic scene from different angles and capture different pieces of the officers’ conversations amid a noisy environment.
Chauvin, who is white, was convicted of murder and manslaughter in state court last year and later pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights charge.
Lane, Kueng and Thao also face a separate state trial in June on charges alleging that they aided and abetted murder and manslaughter.

This is for the singles who would rather be in a relationship – no judgment here. How does your dream partner dress? What movie scenes do you want to recreate with them? Church or outdoor venue for the wedding? Have a blast daydreaming and pinning white dresses to your Pinterest board.
Your space is often a reflection of your mental health. Where can you tidy up some clutter? Does the shirt you never wear really “spark joy?” Turn on Tidying Up With Marie Kondo or The Home Edit on Netflix and do some early spring cleaning. Taking care of what you have shows gratitude.
What do you wish existed in the world? Get started on making it a reality! Don’t let thoughts of self doubt keep you from seeing your dream come true. It’s absolutely possible. If you spend the day working on your passion, you’ll get lost in your zone of genius and get a boost of optimism for your future.
If the idea of goal-setting sounds daunting to you ever since March 2020 (the shock of COVID-19’s impact), you’re not alone. However, if you walk without a sense of direction, you’ll end up in circles. If setting goals for the year or next 5 years is overwhelming, what would you like to achieve in March. You can do it.
This is for the singles who couldn’t care less. You have your routine, you know what you do on any other Monday and you’re sticking to it… you might have one piece of chocolate, though.
Whether you plan to be a hopeless romantic, Black historian, or exactly who you are any day, we at WHUR wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Did you know February is also American Heart Health Month? Let’s take a moment to learn more about the organ that keeps you alive and how to keep it healthy.
We all know February as the month dedicated to love with heart shapes everywhere you look. But did you know February is also American Heart Health Month? Let’s take a moment to learn more about the organ that keeps you alive and how to keep it healthy.
According to the CDC, one person dies every 36 seconds in the US from a cardiovascular disease. Scary, right? According to WebMD, the issues that lead to a heart attack begin at a microscopic level. Once problems develop in the lining of your arteries, plaque may form which blocks blood flow to the heart. There are many actions you can take to prevent issues with your heart health.

1. Eat meals that taste good and are good for you
A good rule of thumb is to have one extra fruit or vegetable a day. Superfoods like salmon and avocado also have proven benefits for maintaining a healthy heart.
2. Move your body
Take a walk around your neighborhood or a scenic landscape, turn on WHUR and dance to your favorite songs, or get a good stretch in. Getting active is a wonderful way to stay healthy physically and mentally.
3. Count your blessings
Keeping track of the little things that make you smile will relieve stress which may lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. Being grateful doesn’t only improve your mood but can save your life!
