Haitian President Jovenel Moïse Assassinated

Haiti in upheaval

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Gunmen have assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moïse and wounded his wife in their home. The killing Wednesday is sure to bring more chaos to the unstable Caribbean country already beset by gang violence, soaring inflation and protests by opposition supporters who accused Moïse of increasing authoritarianism. Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said the police and military were in control of security. The poorest country in the Americas, Haiti has a history of dictatorship and political upheaval. The streets of Port-au-Prince were empty and quiet. In an interview with The Associated Press, Joseph called for an international investigation into the assassination, said elections set for later this year should be held, and pledged to work with Moïse’s allies and opponents.

Spike Lee, ‘Annette’ Kick Off 74th Cannes Film Festival

By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer
CANNES, France (AP) — The Cannes Film Festival rolled out the red carpet for the first time in more than two years on Tuesday, launching the French Riviera spectacular with the premiere of Leos Carax’s “Annette,” the introduction of Spike Lee’s jury, and with high hopes for shrugging off a punishing pandemic year for cinema. The 74th Cannes opened Tuesday with as much glitz as it could summon, led by “Annette,” a fantastical musical starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard and scored by the musical duo Sparks. The opening ceremony also returned last year’s Palme d’Or winner, Bong Joon Ho (for “Parasite”) and Jodie Foster, who first came to Cannes as a 13-year-old with Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver,” for an honorary Palme.

A Pandemic Clothing Purge Is On As Normal Life Resumes In US

By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — A wardrobe purge is on for some as vaccinations have taken hold, restrictions have lifted, and offices reopen or finalize plans to do so. The main beneficiaries are secondhand clothing marketplaces and brick-and-mortar donation spots. That continues a trend building for the last several years. At the resale site Poshmark, orders are up for handbags and work-worthy dresses when compared to last year. The same goes for blazers, suit jackets and heels. ThredUp’s co-founder and CEO, James Reinhart, says growth is fueled by an influx of new sellers putting high-quality clothing into the market.

As Employers Struggle To Fill Jobs, Teens Come To The Rescue

By PAUL WISEMAN and JOSEPH PISANI AP Business Writers
WASHINGTON (AP) — The owners of restaurants, amusement parks and retail shops, many of them desperate for workers, are sounding an unusual note of gratitude this summer: Thank goodness for teenagers. As the U.S. economy bounds back with unexpected speed from the pandemic recession and customer demand intensifies, high school-age kids are filling jobs that older workers can’t — or won’t. The result is that teens who are willing to bus restaurant tables or serve as water-park lifeguards are commanding $15, $17 or more an hour, plus bonuses in some instances or money to help pay for school classes.

Philanthropies Eagerly Back Journalist Hannah-Jones

By HALELUYA HADERO and GLENN GAMBOA AP Business Writers
NEW YORK (AP) — Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones is using major philanthropic donors to build her future as a tenured professor at Howard University, just as other major donors sought to stymie the Pulitzer Prize-winning Black investigative reporter at the University of North Carolina. Hannah-Jones announced Tuesday that she will establish the Center for Journalism and Democracy at Howard to increase diversity in journalism.

The $20 million in contributions point to a growing philanthropic effort to diversify news organizations and strengthen journalistic standards. The donations, including $5 million each from the MacArthur, Knight and Ford foundations and an anonymous donor, will also bring award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates to Howard, a historically black school that’s also his alma mater.

ESPN Takes Nichols Off NBA Finals Duty After Leaked Comments

By BRIAN MAHONEY AP Basketball Writer
PHOENIX (AP) — ESPN has replaced Rachel Nichols as its sideline reporter for the NBA Finals following a report detailing critical comments she made about Black colleague Maria Taylor. The network announced Tuesday that Malika Andrews would handle that role for the series between the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks. Nichols has been the sideline reporter for its top national games this season and for last year’s NBA Finals. But the switch was made after The New York Times reported Sunday on her comments last year, when she learned Taylor would lead the network’s studio show instead of her during the league’s restart at Walt Disney World.

Viral: Bride TikToker Receives Backlash for Asking Bridesmaids to Pay for Bachelorette Trip to Mexico

Lisa Torres didn’t have an idea what a troll was until she posted about her bachelorette party on TikTok. The bride-to-be, known as @lisalovesrandom, shared the letter of transparency she sent her bridesmaids about paying for their own trip to Mexico.

The video has received over 4.1 million views with people weighing in on whether or not it’s “tacky” to ask your bridesmaids to pay for their expenses for a bachelorette party.

Since posting the letter Torres says, “I learned the actual definition of a troll because I never knew what it meant.” She says she wanted to send the letter to give her bridesmaids an opportunity to “say no” if they didn’t want to participate.

The letter laid out her expectations for her wedding, how they should be dressed for the wedding, and the $500 fee for attending the bachelorette trip, which includes airfare, hotel, and drinks.

Do you think it’s fair to have bridesmaids pay for wedding expenses or is it the bride’s responsibility?

Nikole Hannah-Jones and Ta-Nehisi Coates Headed to HU

(Tuesday, July 6, 2021) – Big gains today for Howard University. Two heavy hitters are bringing their gifts and talents to the historically black university announcing today their plans to join the faculty.  Investigative journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones says she will not teach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill following an extended fight over tenure. Hannah-Jones announced her decision today on “CBS This Morning” saying instead she will take up tenure at Howard University as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism.

Also joining Howard is award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates. He will be a writer-in-residence in the university’s College of Arts and Sciences. Coates is well known for his work on topics including race and white supremacy.

One week ago, trustees at UNC-Chapel Hill approved tenure for Hannah-Jones, capping weeks of tension that began when a board member halted the process over questions about her teaching credentials.

The appointments are supported by nearly $20 million donated by Knight Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation, as well as by an anonymous donor, to support Howard’s continued education of and investment in Black journalists.

“It is my pleasure to welcome to Howard two of today’s most respected and influential journalists,” said Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA, president of Howard University. “At such a critical time for race relations in our country, it is vital that we understand the role of journalism in steering our national conversation and social progress. Not only must our newsrooms reflect the communities where they are reporting, but we need to infuse the profession with diverse talent. We are thrilled that they will bring their insights and research to what is already a world-class, highly accomplished team of professors.

“Further, we are grateful to the Knight, MacArthur and Ford foundations, as well as to an anonymous donor, for their support in our continued efforts to train the next generation of journalists and to provide a diverse pipeline of talent to America’s newsrooms,” said President Frederick.

Hannah-Jones, the creator of the 1619 Project, will be the inaugural Knight Chair in Race and Journalism and will begin her faculty role this Summer. Award-winning author Coates will hold the Sterling Brown Chair in the Department of English and will begin this position following completion of several current obligations.

“I am so incredibly honored to be joining one of the most important and storied educational institutions in our country and to work alongside the illustrious faculty of the Cathy Hughes School of Communications and the brilliant students it draws in,” Hannah-Jones said. “One of my few regrets is that I did not attend Howard as an undergraduate, and so coming here to teach fulfills a dream I have long carried. I hope that the decision that Ta-Nehisi and I made to bring our talents to an HBCU will lead others to make a similar choice.

“We are at a critical juncture in our democracy, and yet our press does not reflect the nation it serves and too often struggles to grasp the danger for our country as we see growing attacks on free speech and the fundamental right to vote,” Hannah-Jones continued. “In the storied tradition of the Black press, the Center for Journalism and Democracy will help produce journalists capable of accurately and urgently covering the challenges of our democracy with a clarity, skepticism, rigor and historical dexterity that is too often missing from today’s journalism. I am so grateful to the Ford, Knight and MacArthur foundations for the initial funding to launch the center and hope to very quickly meet the center’s $25 million fundraising goal.”

“I heard a wise man once say, ‘A man who hates home will never be happy.’ And it is in the pursuit of wisdom and happiness that I return to join the esteemed faculty of Howard University. This is the faculty that molded me. This is the faculty that strengthened me,” Coates said. “Personally, I know of no higher personal honor than this.”

Tamar Braxton Reveals Reality TV Almost Killed Her

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb

A year after her suicide attempt, Tamar Braxton is driven to surround herself with positivity.

The former reality star and host of the podcast Under Construction with Tamar is opening up about the July 16, 2020 incident and how she’s moving forward from it.

Braxton was home with her son and then boyfriend David Adefeso who found her unresponsive before being rushed to the hospital.

“That time of my life was so dark and so heavy,” she tells PEOPLE in one of this week’s cover stories. “I didn’t see how I was going to come out on the other side. I didn’t even know that there was another side. But I chose to change my life.”

“Most people think, ‘Oh, she went to a hotel, probably took a bunch of drugs, was on a binge.’ It didn’t happen like that. It was just everyday life, trying to figure out how to get through the day and then …” Braxton continues, stopping short of reliving exactly what happened.

“I thought I had successfully buried that part of me, but it was manifesting in different ways,” continues Braxton, who was often shown to be on edge and irritable on her shows. “It was coming out in how I dealt with things emotionally, how I looked at situations, how I conducted myself.”

Braxton shares that she started to feel boxed into an increasingly negative onscreen persona. Things came to a head during the filming of Get Ya Life!, which she says sensationalized her life as a single mom and her admittedly rocky relationship with Adefeso.

“After a scene, I’d watch it back, and it would be nothing like how it went down,” she says. “They started piecing words together and sentences. I just thought that wasn’t necessary.”

“I wanted to do positive television,” says Braxton, who felt even her family’s show had taken a tonal turn. In recent years Braxton has been at odds with her sisters and mother, both onscreen and off.

The break from these shows was most directly to be a better mother and better role model to Logan.

“I still love television,” she says, “but I’m definitely not ever doing another docuseries about my life.”
“I’m dedicated to being the best mom, the best person I can be,” Braxton adds. “I am moving forward.”

Travelers Expected on Freer Fourth of July

Well over 3 million people could pass through the nation’s airports.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Americans enjoying newfound liberty are expected to travel and gather for cookouts, fireworks and family reunions over the Fourth of July weekend in numbers not seen since pre-pandemic days. Well over 3 million people could pass through the nation’s airports. Yet lingering restrictions, worker shortages and still significant numbers of unvaccinated people mean some may not be as free as they’d like to be. And there are fears that the mixing of large numbers of vaccinated and unvaccinated Americans at a time when the highly contagious delta variant is spreading rapidly in the U.S. could undo some of the progress made against the scourge.

Firefighter’s Daughter Found in Florida Condo Rubble

The child was one of two victims found in the rubble of Champlain Towers South late Thursday

SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — Official say the body of a Miami firefighter’s 7-year-old daughter was recovered from the site of a South Florida condo collapse by the search and rescue team he had been assisting. The child was one of two victims found in the rubble of Champlain Towers South late Thursday, a week after the building partially collapsed. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced Friday that the death toll now stands at 20, with 128 people still considered missing in the wreckage. Officials said the firefighter voluntarily joined the search, hoping he could help find his daughter and others still missing in the wreckage.

Positive Marijuana Test May Put An End To Track Star’s Olympic Dream

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb

Sha’Carri Richardson, who went viral for crushing the 100m trial recently, could miss the Games after testing positive for marijuana.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency announced the positive test result Friday morning, and said Richardson had accepted a suspension of one month, starting on June 28. That could clear her in time to run in the 4×100 meter relay that takes place later in the Games — if she is named to the U.S. team, reported the New York Times.

Richardson’s biological mother had passed shortly before the trials which was a lot emotionally for her. In an interview with NBC this morning she cites her loss of her mother for her using marijuana to cope. Although raised by her grandmother primarily, she was informed of the death of her mother from a reporter while at the Olympic Trials, and called it triggering and “definitely nerve-shocking.”

“It sent me into a state of emotional panic,” she said, adding, “I didn’t know how to control my emotions or deal with my emotions during that time.”
She apologized to her fans, her family and her sponsors, saying, “I greatly apologize if I let you guys down, and I did.”

U.S.A. Track & Field has notified other women who competed in the 100-meter final at the trials about the failed drug test, according to one person with direct knowledge of the information, and several runners have been told that they have moved up a spot in the final standings reported the New York Times.
Jenna Prandini, who placed fourth at the trials, has been notified that she will now be one of the three American women running the 100 in Tokyo, and Gabby Thomas, who finished fifth at the trials, was named as an alternate for the race, the person said.

Although her suspension will be finished before the start of the Olympics, she will miss the qualifying rounds for the women’s 100m.

Early Thursday afternoon, Richardson cryptically tweeted, “I am human.” And on NBC on Friday, she expanded on that thought.

“I just say, don’t judge me and I am human — I’m you, I just happen to run a little faster,” she said, adding that she expects some people to criticize her marijuana use. “They don’t necessarily understand, and I wouldn’t even call them haters.”

In a statement, U.S.A. Track & Field said Richardson’s situation “is incredibly unfortunate and devastating for everyone involved,” but made no mention of whether or how she would compete at the Olympics.

“While we are heartbroken, the USOPC is steadfast in its commitment to clean competition and it supports the anti-doping code,” the organization said in a statement Friday morning. “A positive test for any banned substance comes with consequences and we are working with the USATF to determine the appropriate next steps. We are dedicated to providing Sha’Carri the support services she needs during this difficult time.”

Her 10.86 time at trials made her a heavy favorite to bring home the gold medal. While the situation is unfortunate, we hope Richardson continues to heal from the passing of her mother.

Tabitha Brown Gracefully Responds To Wendy Williams

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb
Tabitha Brown has become popular for her contagious smile and personality. The CHI actress kept this same smile as she politely responded to critics of her retiring her husband from the LAPD.

Among her critics were Wendy Williams who was not a fan of her retiring her husband.

Essence reported that she mentioned Tabitha’s accomplishment as part of her Hot Topics on Thursday’s (July 1) episode of The Wendy Williams Show. After playing part of Tabitha’s video, she immediately shook her head in disapproval, bringing up her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter. The couple was married in 1997 and Williams filed for divorce in 2019 after he carried on a relationship with another woman whom he welcomed a child with during the marriage.

“I was married to one of those. ‘I make the money!’ and so on and so forth. ‘Go live your dreams! Open a business! Go, go, go!’ See how that turned out,” she said. “I predict that this marriage is going to be on real rocky ground in a moment. ‘Live your dream’… They may invest in stuff and lose the money. They invest in something else then the money gets swindled or stolen. Then they invest again and he comes home and throws his bag down. She’s like ‘What? What?’ And he’s like, ‘I can’t do this and this is your fault. You’re over here making your money and stuff and had me quit my job.’”

“No, you work!” Williams added. “Being a cop was a big part of his identity, he liked it but she came to him and said that.”

Instead of using negativity back, Brown took to IG to spread a message of love and motivation.

A post shared by Tabitha Brown (@iamtabithabrown)

“Wendy the pain you must be in to feel this way, honey, I’m so sorry. But listen, let me tell you this. Twenty-three years I’ve been with my husband, broke for a very long time together. Struggled for a very long time together. Succeeded for the last couple of years together,” she said.

She went on to note that Chance took his job with the LAPD to help support her dream and provide for their family. As she mentioned in her initial video, they agreed that she would eventually take him out of the force when she made it so he could pursue his own dreams.

“I was his dog in the fight and he believed in me and we did it together for the last 15 years,” she said. “I did every year with him in the LAPD and he did every year with me with rejection and nos in this entertainment industry. However, God has blessed me…I’ve been praying on this for a very long time and it has now come to pass. That is the power of God. It’s also the power of allowing God to be first in your marriage. That’s how it remains successful, we keep Him first. He is first in our marriage. Not money, not business, not success, but God. He’s first.”

Honestly, I had no idea how kind and fun he is. This man has broken down all kinds of barriers. After bursting onto the rap scene, 50 was able to show many of his other dimensions. As a television and film producer, director, actor, entrepreneur, and mogul, he’s showing no signs of stopping.

We talked about his new season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan which I cannot wait to see. As you’ll see, I had so much fun getting to know this great guy! I especially admire how he uses what could easily have been setbacks, to power through. Hope you enjoy the conversation, too.

NFL fines Washington $10M after misconduct investigation

The NFL has fined the Washington Football Team $10 million and owner Dan Snyder is stepping away from day-to-day operations after an independent investigation into the organization’s workplace misconduct. The team was not stripped of any draft picks as part of the league’s discipline. Snyder says his wife Tanya will be in charge for the next “several months.” The investigation found ownership and senior officials paid little attention to sexual harassment and other workplace issues that made the environment “highly unprofessional.”

Condo Search & Rescue On Hold

Safety concerns halt rescue efforts at condo collapse site

SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — Rescue efforts at the site of a partially collapsed Florida condominium building have been halted out of concern about the stability of the remaining structure. Officials say crews noticed widening cracks and up to a foot of movement in a large column early Thursday. The stoppage that began shortly after 2 a.m. threatened to keep search teams off the rubble pile for an unknown period and dim hopes for finding anyone alive in the debris a week after the tower came down. The rescue operations were called off on the same day that President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden visited the devastated community.

Trump Org, CFO Plead Not Guilty to Tax Indictment

Weisselberg’s lawyers say he will fight the charges

NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for Donald Trump’s company pleaded not guilty to tax crime charges Thursday, along with the Trump Organization’s longtime finance chief. It is the first criminal case arising from a two-year investigation into the former president’s company. Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg was arraigned a day after a grand jury returned an indictment charging him and Trump’s company with tax crimes. Trump himself was not charged. The case against Weisselberg and the Trump Organization involves fringe benefits given to employees, like the use of apartments, cars and school tuition. Weisselberg’s lawyers say he will fight the charges, and there’s no indication he is willing to cooperate.

Gabby Thomas Wins Women’s 200 Meters at U.S. Olympic Trials

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb

Black Girl Magic. Meet Gabby Thomas, the Harvard alum who majored in neurobiology, is currently working in a master’s degree in epidemiology/health care management at Texas. S

The newly crowned American 200m champion, finished with a blazing fast 21.61 seconds.

She not only beat the meet record set by her idol, Allyson Felix, but also made her the second-fastest woman ever in the event, trailing only two times posted by the late Florence Griffith Joyner aka FloJo.

“I blacked out during that race,” the 24-year-old said with a laugh. “I know beforehand I wanted to focus on accelerating through the first 100 and keep the momentum — come off the turn feeling really good.” reported NBC Sports.

The former NCAA indoor champion had a health scare just before the trials and wondered if she would even run at all. She was dealing with a hamstring injury and had it checked out. Doctors ordered an MRI on her lower back, where they discovered what turned out to be a benign tumor in her liver.

“At first I wasn’t too worried about it, but the more I kept talking to doctors they kept saying cancer,” Thomas recounted. “Fortunately, they found out it was benign just a couple of days before I left. I remember telling God that if I am healthy, I am winning trials.”

Now, her road to a possible gold medal could also be combined with a quest for a record that has long been out of reach. Flo-Jo’s world record is 21.34. She also ran 21.56 on her way to gold 33 years ago, at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

“I am still in shock. I can’t believe I put up that time,” Thomas said. “Definitely has changed how I view myself as a runner.”

About chasing one of the most iconic records in the book: “I don’t want to say no,” Thomas said. “I don’t want to put a limit on myself. I’m not going to say it’s unattainable.”

For fueling her track passion, she can thank Felix, the five-time Olympian who was a lane over from her in the 200m final. (Felix finished fifth.)

In today’s society we have no room for racism or promoting hate. Emory University announced the Atlanta campus will be renaming some buildings due to who they honor.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that “the university’s Longstreet-Means residence hall will be renamed Eagle Hall. Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, president of Emory College from 1839 to 1848 and namesake of the building, was a strong advocate of slavery and secession.”

Emory University President Gregory Fenves said, “It is inappropriate for his name to continue to be memorialized in a place of honor on our campus.”

Other name changes are set to come on the Oxford Campus, where they will honor Superior Court Judge Horace J, Johnson Jr. Johnson was the first Black Superior Court judge to serve in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit in Newton and Walton counties. Johnson also helped break the color barrier in public school in the 1960s.

On June 17, Emory held a Juneteenth ceremony in which it apologized to a Black medical school applicant who was denied admission in 1959 because of his race. These actions came after a protest for the death of George Floyd.

Fenves also said, “By understanding our history and expanding the Emory story to include voices, perspectives, and contributions that were overlooked or silenced, we are creating a deeper understanding of who we are and all we can achieve as a university.”

Four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Serena Williams will not be participating in the Tokyo Olympics later this summer.

According to ESPN, during her pre-Wimbledon news conference on June 27, the tennis star icon said, “I’m actually not on the Olympic list, not that I’m aware of. If so, then I shouldn’t be on it.”

Williams did not go into much detail, “There’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision. I don’t really want to — I don’t feel like going into them today. Maybe another day.”

She also added, “I have not thought about it. In the past [the Olympics] has been a wonderful place for me. I really haven’t thought about it, so I’m going to keep not thinking about it.”

Naomi Osaka, who earlier this year withdrew from several tournaments, confirmed that she is excited to play at the Tokyo Olympics.

Princes William, Harry Unveil Princess Diana’s Statue

LONDON (AP) — Princes William and Harry have unveiled a statue of their mother, Princess Diana, on what would have been her 60th birthday in a small — and brief — ceremony at London’s Kensington Palace.. Diana’s family joined the two brothers for Thursday’s ceremony at the palace’s Sunken Garden, a place in which the princess once found solace. It was the first time the brothers have appeared in public together since the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip. The brothers later issued a joint statement in which they described their mother’s strength and character as “qualities that made her a force for good around the world.”

County Once Named For Slave Owner Now Named After Pioneering Black Professor

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb

We love to see change in our country. This past Thursday The Johnson County Board of Supervisors in Iowa City, Iowa, voted unanimously to change the county’s name to that of a Black professor, a pioneer in education.

The county is now named in honor of Lulu Merle Johnson. It was originally named for Richard Mentor Johnson, a long-time slave owner who took credit for the murder of Shawnee Chief Tecumseh at the Battle of Thames in 1805, according to CBS News.

“We recognize that place-names embody the identity and cultural values of a place. For that reason, it is important to establish an eponym of Johnson County who represents what is important to the people who live here,” Lisa Green-Douglass, Board of Supervisors member, tells the television news outlet. “It has been a privilege to chair the Johnson County Eponym Committee, and to be able to recognize, honor, and establish Dr. Lulu Merle Johnson as the County’s official eponym.”

Johnson was a part of the first HBCU Cheyney State University in Pennsylvania. She was considered a pioneer in both the state of Iowa, and in the development of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. She served as the dean of women as well as led history classes.
She became the first Black woman to earn a Ph. D. at the University of Iowa, despite facing racism and sexism from students and school administration, the report notes.

“Notwithstanding such discrimination, students of color like Ms. Johnson shared their brilliance with our institution and contributed to making the UI who we are today,” Iowa’s interim Chief Diversity Officer Lena M. Hill tells CBS News.

Lil Kim Wants Verzuz With Nicki Minaj

During a pre-show event for the 2021 BET Awards, Lil Kim said she wants a Verzuz with Nicki Minaj.

Arguably two of the best women rappers to ever do it, this is something fans have been dying to see.

Entertainment Weekly reported “Kim and Minaj have fired shots at each other over the years, with Kim releasing the 2011 song “Black Friday” as a nod to Minaj’s album Pink Friday. She’s called the rapper a “Lil’ Kim clone” and a “wannabe,” while Minaj’s “Stupid Hoe” and “Roman’s Revenge” are among the many songs thought to be diss tracks against Kim.”

As of 2018 Lil Kim had positive remarks about Minaj, so it seems there is a mutual respect from the two.

While some fans would prefer a Verzuz between Lil Kim and a rapper of her era such as Foxy Brown, many fans want this battle.

After the Recent Verzuz between Soulja Boy and Bow-Wow, it is safe to say Verzuz has been one of the most entertaining series of 2021.

LeVar Burton Will Be ‘Hurt’ If He Doesn’t Land Jeopardy!

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb

LeVar Burton has not been shy about his desire to host Jeopardy. As we reported earlier in the year after the passing of long time host Alex Trebeck.

Since Alex Trebek’s passing, LeVar Burton has been very vocal about being the next host, including reposting a petition that calls for him to get the job.
While he was selected as the guest host, no official announcement has been made on who the full time host will be.

He told The New York Times, “It will hurt. I’m not going to lie. But if that happens, I will get over it. I will be fine. Remember: Everything happens perfectly and for a reason. That is my default. It’s all going to be OK. Because it always is.”

He added, “I feel like this is what I’m supposed to do. I have been watching Jeopardy! more or less every night of my life since Art Fleming was host. Jeopardy! is a cultural touchstone, and for a Black man to occupy that podium is significant.”

While LeVar would make an amazing host, Jeopardy executive producer Mike James said ““What we’re going to look for is the best candidate for the show. We’ve been very clear, and how we have approached the guest hosts is that we are going to not limit it to anyone based on anything. We’re going to look for the best people. That would be the ‘Jeopardy!’ way.”

During an interview with The Jasmine Brand, Nene Leakes revealed her husband was in the hospital. Her husband Gregg is recovering from surgery after his cancer returned.

“I’m sure he’ll be home in about a week or so,” she said. “He had to have a surgery. So his cancer did return.”
Leakes said it’s been “difficult” dealing with his latest bout of cancer.

“He’s super small,” she said. “If you’ve ever been around somebody who’s had cancer before, he’s different. He’s different.”

Gregg Leakes initial stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis was a story line during the 11th season of “RHOA” which aired from November 2018 to May 2019 reported the Jasmine Brand Reported.

The couple considered counseling to help their marriage as NeNe Leakes tried to adjust to being her husband’s caregiver during the reunion show for season 11.

Gregg Leakes also gave a health update, saying he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
“I’m a couple treatments away from radiation, then I go through a full battery of testing again to see if the cancer has in fact incubated and started to spread — and we’re hoping it hasn’t,” he said at the time.

Olympian Gwen Berry Continues Her Social Justice Protests

Gwen Berry turns as national anthem is played.

(Tuesday, June 29, 2021) – Olympian Gwen Berry says she stands by her statements and position Saturday to turn away from the American flag as the national anthem was played.

Berry, who earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic hammer throwing team in Eugene, Ore. over the weekend, says she felt like she was set-up.  In a statement to the Associated Press, Berry said she was told the Star spangled Banner would play before the medalists walked out to the podium for the award ceremony.   But instead the anthem played as the athletes were in their podium positions.

That’s when Berry turned, placed her hand on her waist, and held up a T-shirt with the wording “Activist Athlete” and put the shirt over her head.  Berry later posted a picture of herself on Twitter with the caption, “Stop playing with me.”

For its part, a spokesperson for the USA Track and Field says the national anthem had been scheduled to play Saturday at 5:20pm.  However, the music actually started at 5:25pm. The spokesperson maintains “we didn’t wait until the athletes were on the podium, adding the anthem is played every day according to a previously published schedule.”
