FDA Moves to Ban Menthol Cigarettes and Flavored Cigars

In an effort to improve the health of all Americans and tackle health disparities, the Biden Administration is moving to ban certain types of cigarettes and cigars.

Washington, D.C. – (Friday, April 30, 2021) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is looking at a ban on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.

In a statement released Thursday, Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock said such actions will help reduce youth smokers and address health disparities experienced in communities of color, low-income populations and the LGBTQ communities.

Health experts have said menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars are highly addicted and are often targeted in specific communities who are already struggling with health challenges.

The FDA says it has no plans to go after individual consumers of the products.  But says the ban would target manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, importers, and retailers.

The Talk Becomes The Lowest-Rated Daytime Show

It appears as if the Sharon Osbourne drama has affected The Talk.
According to ratings for the week of April 12-16, The Talk came in last place in both the Women 18-49 demographic (0.23 rating) and the Women 25-54 demographic (0.35 rating).
Right after Sharon left in March, the show’s ratings also dropped by 27 percent.
At the top of the ratings is The Price is Right, The Young and the Restless, The Today Show, and The View.
Do you think The Talks ratings will continue to plummet?

How To Travel Safely and Cheaply This Summer

By SAM KEMMIS of NerdWallet
As vaccinations roll out, questions remain about how and where people can travel safely and on a budget this summer. Experts recommend first and foremost to get vaccinated before traveling and continue to follow CDC guidance for COVID-19 safety even after being inoculated. To save money, take advantage of new airline policies that allow fee-free changes and cancellations, providing you the opportunity to book cheaper flights now, before prices increase as summer approaches, but retain the ability to change your mind later. If you want to get out of the country, target locations with open borders like Iceland or Belize.

DJ Khaled & Kanye West Connect For Albums & Eggs

DJ Khaled and Kanye West recently linked up for a listening session of Khaled’s latest album, Khaled Khaled.

Kanye popped up at Khaled’s home unannounced at 8 AM, but hey it’s Kanye, so the two enjoyed a breakfast of eggs and ketchup and some dance moves courtesy of Khaled.

Kanye also shared music he’s been working on with Khaled. Although Kanye doesn’t appear on Khaled’s project, the fact that Kanye is active and interacting with other artists is a good sign he may be working on new music of his own.

There’s even is a picture with Kanye’s hands raised high in the air as it seems he’s enjoying what he’s hearing.

Do you think Khaled and Kanye will come together for new music? Do you think Khaled can bring Kanye and JAY-Z back together again?

Redman Joins Method Man In 50 Cent’s Show “Power Book II: Ghost”

50 Cent’s “Power Book II: Ghost” is currently shooting season two and there is a new addition to the cast.

Theo Rollins is the older brother of the shady lawyer, Davis McLean, played by Method Man. Now his real-life wingman, Redman will join him on the set to portray Rollins, who has been in prison.

Redman is the newest artist to join the cast of “Power Book II: Ghost” alongside Mary J. Blige. There’s also talk of Kash Doll making an appearance in the new series.

What do you think of “Power Book II: Ghost?”

JAY-Z Confident ‘Cancel Culture’ Is Here To Stay

JAY-Z sat down for a video interview with The New York Times last weekend (April 25th) and along with talking about his new “Only See Great” campaign, parenting with Beyoncé, and “cancel culture.”

JAY-Z explained why he doesn’t participate in social media and how “cancel culture” won’t be going anywhere.

“You can’t give someone a microphone for 24 hours a day and [have them] not think they have to use it!” said Jay. “These kids, it’s unbelievable. Imagine having a microphone and you’re asked about social justice questions at 18 years old? It’s like, ‘What? I’m meant to know the answer, and if I don’t answer the correct way, if I don’t say everything right, even if my intentions are right, and I don’t say the same right thing, it’s going to be everywhere.’”

Hot 97 DJ, Funkmaster Flex, who is known for his outlandish comments, says there’s a bigger reason why JAY-Z doesn’t participate on social media claiming, “he’s the most sensitive muthafucka on the planet and he can’t take n-ggas in his comments telling him the truth.”

Flex also says JAY-Z watches social media through a “fake page.” Do you agree with JAY-Z’s comments on “cancel culture?”

Chadwick Boseman’s Family Defends Anthony Hopkins’ Oscar Win

Many fans were upset that Chadwick didn’t win the Oscar at the recent ceremony.
But his brother Derrick Boseman recently chatted with TMZ and was remained positive.
The outlet said, “He doesn’t view Chadwick not winning an Oscar for Best Actor as a snub because every nominated actor was excellent and deserving of the award.
They added, “He says the family isn’t upset or agitated whatsoever that Chadwick’s name wasn’t called at the end of the Oscars ceremony.”
Do you think Chadwick should have won?

Teyana Taylor Decided To Retire After Feeling “Underappreciated” By Her Label

Teyana Taylor has finally explained her “retirement” during a visit to Cam Newton’s “Sip ‘N Smoke” series.

After releasing her project “The Album,” Teyana says she felt “underappreciated” by her record label.

Taylor went on to say she feels “seen” by her husband and wants to feel that way by everyone she’s aligned with. If you’ve been a fan of Teyana for any length of time you know she’s a hard worker.

Taylor felt that her label wasn’t working hard for her saying, “For my mental health, my mental well-being, for my kids, let me just put this on ice for a little [bit]. It’s not that I retired permanently. It’s more like, I just don’t feel like I want to move another inch for a company.”

Can you relate to Teyana Taylor and her need to feel “seen?” Where do you feel “unseen” in your life?

Md Gov. Hogan Lifts Outdoor Mask Mandate and Some Restrictions

Marylanders can now go maskless outdoors as governor repeals outside mask mandate and lifts limits on outdoor dining and stand-up bar service.

(Wednesday, April 28, 2021) – Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is taking  more steps toward easing  COVID restrictions across the state.  He announced today that he’s repealing the state’s outdoor mask mandate and dropping social distancing and capacity requirements for outdoor dinning and outdoor stand-up bar service.  Those new rollback guidelines will take effect Saturday, May 1st.

Citing the latest guidance issued Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hogan said he’s repealing the state’s outdoor masking mandate with the exception of large venues like sporting events or concerts.

Hogan says Maryland has surpassed administering more than 4.5 million COVID shots with 60 percent of Marylanders 18 and older vaccinated.  “We expect to be able to take additional actions in the weeks ahead and to return to a sense of normalcy,” said Hogan.

It’s not yet clear how many local governments in the state will actually follow Hogan’s lead.

3 Charged With Hate Crime In Ahmaud Arbery Death

Grand jury indicts father and son along with another man on hate crime charges in the February 2020 killing of Ahmaud Arbery.

(Wednesday, April 28, 2021) – A federal grand jury has indicted three White men with hate crime and attempted kidnapping charges in the death of Ahmaud Arbery.  He’s the 25-year-old Black man who was gunned down while jogging in a Georgia neighborhood in February 2020.

The three charged are 35-year-old Travis McMichael, his father, 65-year-old Gregory McMichael, and 65-year-old William Bryan, a former police detective.  The three are already awaiting trial on murder charges, accused of confronting and killing Arbery as he jogged thru a neighborhood in Brunswick, Ga.

The case had drawn widespread criticism and protests after a video of the shooting went viral.  The attorney for the family of Arbery applauded the new charges.  “Yet another step in the right direction in a fight to hold people accountable for Arbery’s death,” said civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

No Release of Videos Showing Deputies Shooting Black Man

Family can see video in ten days.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — A judge has denied requests to release body camera video in the case of a Black man who killed by North Carolina deputies. The decision came Wednesday shortly after a North Carolina prosecutor said that Andrew Brown Jr. had hit law enforcement officers with his car before they opened fire. District Attorney Andrew Womble told a judge at a hearing that he viewed body camera video and disagreed with a characterization by attorneys for Brown’s family that his car was stationary when the shooting started. Womble said the video shows that Brown’s car made contact with law enforcement twice before shots could be heard on the video.

Feds Raid Rudy Giuliani’s NYC Home and Office

Giuliani accused federal authorities of a “corrupt double standard”.

NEW YORK (AP) — A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that federal investigators have executed search warrants at Rudy Giuliani’s Manhattan residence and office. The former New York City mayor has been under investigation for several years over his business dealings in Ukraine. Details of the reasons for Wednesday’s searches were not immediately available. The officials who confirmed the execution of the search warrants did not have approval to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. Giuliani accused federal authorities of a “corrupt double standard” in a statement released through his lawyer.

By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH Associated Press
R&B artist Trey Songz will not face charges in an alleged altercation with police officers at the AFC championship game in Kansas City. Jackson County prosecutor’s office spokesman Mike Mansur said Tuesday that there was “insufficient evidence.” He declined to comment further. Songz, whose real name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was arrested and jailed overnight in January. Police have said he had scuffled with officers during his arrest for allegedly not following coronavirus protocols and other rules at the game. Police subsequently shared video from a camera inside Arrowhead Stadium that showed a scuffle. Songz’s representative, Sydney Margetson, declined to comment.

Chauvin Juror Says Guilty Verdicts Could Have Come Quicker

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A juror who cast one of the unanimous votes to convict a white former Minneapolis police officer of killing George Floyd said deliberations were primarily spent trying to convince one person who was uncertain about part of the jury instructions. Brandon Mitchell is the first juror that deliberated in Derek Chauvin’s trial to talk publicly about his experience. He says he felt like deliberations “should have been 20 minutes.” The 31-year-old Mitchell, who is Black, says the one juror was “kind of hung up with a few words in the instructions,” but “wanted to make sure they got it right.” Chauvin was convicted April 20 on all counts: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

DC Police Dept. Hit by Extortion Attack

There is no indication that any police operations were affected.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington, D.C., police department says its computer network has been breached. The department says a Russian-speaking ransomware syndicate claims to have stolen sensitive data, including on informants, and is threatening to share it with local criminal gangs if the department does not pay an unspecified ransom. The cybercriminals posted screenshots on their website supporting their claim to have stolen more than 250 gigabytes of data. The District’s Metropolitan Police Department says it has asked the FBI to investigate the “unauthorized access.” There is no indication that any police operations were affected.

Independent Autopsy on Andrew Brown, Jr.

Pathologist: Black man killed by deputies was shot 5 times

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — An independent autopsy shows that a Black man killed by deputies in North Carolina was shot five times, including in the back of the head. That’s according to attorneys for Andrew Brown Jr.’s family. The death certificate lists a head wound as the cause of death. In other developments Tuesday, the FBI announced a federal civil rights investigation into last week’s shooting by deputies serving drug-related search and arrest warrants in the North Carolina town of Elizabeth City. A court hearing scheduled for Wednesday will consider making the the video public.

CDC: Americans Can Go Maskless Outdoors… Sometimes

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says wearing a mask outside can be eliminated in some cases for those who are fully vaccinated and for those who are not.

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, April 27, 2021) – As expected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is out with new guidance for mask wearing for fully vaccinated Americans and those who are not vaccinated.  Federal health officials say those who have received either the one shot J&J vaccine or the two shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines can now go without masks outdoors.  But there are some exceptions.

The guidance is the latest set of recommendations for persons who are at least two weeks past their final dose of the COVID-19 vaccinations.  Americans can go without masking up while outdoors when walking, jogging, biking, or dining with friends at outside venues.

Meantime, those new guidelines even apply to unvaccinated people.  But the CDC is cautioning both groups to still wear masks when attending large events outdoors like sporting, performances, protests, and parades.

The new guidelines come as more and more Americans are rolling up their sleeves to take their shots.  The latest figures show that 52 percent of Americans have now had at least one shot.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — A family attorney says a Black man killed by authorities in North Carolina had his hands on his car steering wheel when he was shot. Attorney Chantel Cherry-Lassiter watched a 20-second portion of body camera video with family of Andrew Brown Jr. on Monday. You Said Your Man Has to Have What?

“Nothing is off limits on Ladies Night!”

Ladies Night is always fun with the Ladies of WHUR… But, this is one for the books.

It all started when Angela suggested to Nina Brown that they were gonna “hook her up” with a dating profile.

She and Autumn Joi asked Nina what her preferences are in a guy… Okay… everything was going smoothly…

Nina said she’s 6 ft tall and doesn’t mind dating someone taller or shorter. As long as they have confidence.

But then, our very own “shock jock” Autumn took the reigns and said there were some other… very specific requirements the man should most definitely have. LOL

We all laughed so hard that we’re still posting and laughing about it today. I’m not gonna spoil it for you. Check it out for yourself… and be sure not to miss the next Ladies Night!

Hawaii To Begin Vaccine Passports For Travel Between Islands

Hawaii is ensuring that people traveling between islands are safe.
Governor David Ige announced Hawaii would begin accepting a vaccination exemption on May 11 for interisland travelers who received their vaccination in Hawaii. They will also have to have completed the required 14-day waiting period.
Also, the state’s vaccination exemption allows qualifying interisland travelers to bypass the state’s 10-day travel quarantine. And those travelers will not have to go through the Safe Travels Hawaii pre-testing program or post-arrival testing.
Should vaccine passports be a thing?
