Attorney Michael Avenatti Guilty In Nike Extortion Scheme

Jury Finds Attorney Micahel Avenatti Guilty

(New York, NY) — A jury is finding celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti guilty in his Nike extortion trial. Avenatti was found guilty in trying to extort 25-million-dollars from the sporting apparel and shoe company. Prosecutors said he threatened to expose the company for paying college basketball prospects if they didn’t pay him. In addition, prosecutors told jurors he was facing massive debt at the time of the alleged shakedown.

Free Tax Filing Has Confused Many Americans. Here’s Help.

Free File should be easier to use in 2020. But, with tax season getting into full gear, users should know the details of the service and the alternatives.

The majority of individual taxpayers in the U.S. are eligible to file their taxes online for free, yet many may be unaware or confused by how to do so.

The tax industry and the IRS have played a part in the problem. Together they run the IRS Free File system, which about 70% of taxpayers are eligible for but only a sliver use. It was designed to help low- and middle-income taxpayers find a reliable program to file at no cost and boost online filings. However, the IRS has long faced criticism for its failure to promote and support the program. And recent media reports uncovered efforts by the tax software preparation industry to misguide users of Free File and nudge them into paid products.

Subsequently, improvements have been made and Free File should be easier to use in 2020. But, with tax season getting into full gear, users should know the details of the service and the alternatives.

WHAT IS FREE FILE?

The IRS Free File program allows taxpayers whose adjusted gross income is $69,000 or less to file for free. Tax software prep companies administer Free File via a partnership with the IRS. This year, taxpayers have their choice of 10 providers, including well-known names such as TurboTax, H&R Block and TaxSlayer.

Free File has been available since 2003; but while roughly 70% of taxpayers are eligible, only about 2% use the program, according to the National Taxpayer Advocate’s Office.

WHY THE LIMITED APPEAL?

Critics say the program is confusing and difficult to use. The process taxpayers must follow is “obscure and complex,” according to a report released earlier this month by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

The program is also poorly promoted. The IRS has not allocated any money to advertise Free File since 2014, although the agency does promote it on its website, social media and in press releases. For their part, some companies say they promote the program. TurboTax said increased advertising and other efforts boosted Free File usage last year.

The Taxpayer Advocate, which represents the taxpayer’s voice within the IRS, has been critical of the IRS’ management of the program, saying it fails “to promote the best interest of taxpayers,” noting the low usage and confusion among taxpayers.

Additionally, critics say taxpayers may find themselves confused between the Free File system and the free or low-cost versions offered by the tax prep companies themselves.

Last year, the nonprofit news organization ProPublica found that some of the companies added code to their websites that hid their Free File programs from search engines and diverted users to paid products. Outside investigations confirmed that at least five companies did have coding that prevented users from getting to the proper page. The companies cited in the reports have denied any wrongdoing.

While the companies’ actions didn’t violate their agreement with the IRS, the agency has barred the companies from hiding their free products, among other changes to their agreement.

The IRS and the Free File Alliance, a coalition of tax prep companies that work in the partnership, say they are committed to making future improvements to the program.

The cost to file online with a tax software preparation company varies depending on the complexity of someone’s tax situation, if they are filing state returns as well, or if they need professional assistance. It can range from around $30 to well over $100.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

First and foremost, know this: The only way to access Free File is through the IRS website at IRS.gov/freefile.

Changes have been made to the internet search rules but for good reason. Last year, an estimated 14 million people who were eligible for Free File ended up paying to have their taxes prepared and filed, according to the Treasury Inspector General’s report.

By going to the IRS site, taxpayers can browse all the offers or use a tool to help them find the right product. Each program partner has different eligibility standards, but the IRS assures taxpayers that if their adjusted gross income was $69,000 or less, they will find at least one free product to use.

Taxpayers should not be charged any fees if they qualify, other than potential state tax preparation fees. Some programs offer free state filing as well.

Free File partner company websites are also prohibited from pitching and selling additional products to users, including offers of refund anticipation loans, checks or other such products.

However, not everyone qualifies for Free File. So, if you’ve input all your information and find you do not meet the criteria, you may be pointed toward a paid service to complete your taxes.

Not sure if you’ve got the real deal? The IRS also now requires that each company name their Free File service the same way. It should appear as IRS Free File Program delivered by (Company Name).

DO I HAVE TO USE IT?

There are plenty of other alternatives for filing at no cost.

Taxpayers whose income is over $69,000 can use the Free Fillable Forms, which is an electronic version of IRS paper forms. These forms do the math for the taxpayer, but there are limited directions so the user must be comfortable completing their taxes independently. Paper forms, while not a popular option, are completely free as well.

The tax software providers offer their own options and millions of people use these with success. However — unlike Free File — there may be offers for add-on services or upgrades throughout the process that come at a cost. The branded free file options are typically best suited for people with simple tax situations.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs also both offer free tax filing assistance through volunteer-run programs nationwide. VITA offers free tax help to moderate and low-income individuals, as well as people with disabilities or taxpayers with limited English skills. TCE focuses on helping taxpayers who are 60 years or older.

To find a VITA or TCE site, check the IRS website. The AARP Foundation runs many of the TCE sites and has information on its website as well.

Members of the military can use Military OneSource, a Department of Defense funded service that provides free online filing services through MilTax. MilTax includes access to tax prep software and support from tax consultants who can help with the unique conditions facing those in the military, including deployment, combat pay and multistate filings.

Jennifer Hudson Set For Kobe Bryant Tribute At All-Star Game

The NBA has released a list of entertainers headed to All-Star weekend, the group headlined by Hudson — the two-time Grammy winner and Oscar winner — who, just before Sunday night’s player introductions, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter Gianna and the seven other victims of the helicopter crash that took their lives in Southern California on Jan. 26.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jennifer Hudson is coming to the All-Star Game to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant with her voice.

Other additions the NBA revealed Thursday: DJ Khaled, Quavo and Lil Wayne will join the previously announced Grammy winner and Chicago native Chance the Rapper during Sunday night’s halftime show; Queen Latifah will be joined by Chicago youth to perform Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s in Need of Love Today” during Saturday’s events; and the Chicago Children’s Choir will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Rising Stars game on Friday night.

And Damian Lillard still may perform — even though injury will keep him from playing this weekend.

The Portland guard was to play in Sunday’s All-Star Game and participate in All-Star Saturday Night events as a competitor in the 3-point contest. But he injured his groin in the Trail Blazers’ final game before the break on Wednesday night, and that will keep him off the court.

Lillard, however, is going to be in Chicago and hasn’t ruled out taking the stage on Saturday night. The five-time All-Star is a popular rapper — he raps under the name Dame D.O.L.L.A. — and the NBA is hoping he performs.

His plan, if he can take the stage, is to be joined by Jeremih and Lil Wayne.

“We just kind of started going over what we could do to make it count, tried to figure out Chicago artists who could be part of it,” Lillard said. “Jeremih is going to be on stage with me and he’s from Chicago, he’s on one of my biggest songs on my current album. And then also, I’m going to be doing a song on my previous album and that’s one of my biggest songs with Lil Wayne, too, so it’s going to be a pretty good deal.”

Lillard’s rise in music did not come easily. Even though he had fame through being an All-Star player, he still had to pay his dues as a performer. He worked his way up through Instagram and Soundcloud, building a fan base and building respect within the rap community. And now he has three albums to his credit, plus enough credibility that big names want to work with him.

“I think the No. 1 thing that people see is the route that I’ve taken in my music,” Lillard said. “I didn’t just jump in and say ‘listen to my music because I’m an NBA player.’ I took the route that any other aspiring artist would take, and I think that shows that I took it seriously, that I have real passion for the music and for hip-hop.”

Several other All-Star weekend performers were previously announced: three-time Grammy winner and Chicago native Common, Chance’s brother Taylor Bennett, Chaka Khan (who will sing the U.S. national anthem Sunday before the All-Star Game) and country star Tenille Arts (who will sing the Canadian national anthem).

Common’s role will be to welcome fans to Chicago with a narrative about what basketball means to the city, that part to come before the teams are introduced Sunday.

Review: ‘The Photograph’ Develops Nicely Into A Fine Film

Written and directed by Stella Meghie, the film is a gentle and attentive inter-generational tale with a first-rate cast. To the always-charged romantic question “Do I love this stranger?” it adds another equally fraught query: “Am I becoming my mom?”

This Valentine’s Day, there’s certain to be the usual flood of candy and flowers. But at your local movie theater, there’s something increasingly rare: A soulful and adult romantic drama in “The Photograph.”

Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield star as tentative, would-be lovers in modern-day New York. He’s a magazine writer on an assignment and she’s a museum curator. They first connect over a photograph of her mother that unlocks mom’s backstory, set in 1980s Louisiana. That’s another plus for the film: Value — not one but two love stories.

Written and directed by Stella Meghie, the film is a gentle and attentive inter-generational tale with a first-rate cast. To the always-charged romantic question “Do I love this stranger?” it adds another equally fraught query: “Am I becoming my mom?”

Lakeith (FX’s “Atlanta”) plays Michael as a coiled, watchful and smoldering hunk who seems to be acting from deep within his guts. He’s just as likely to flee as he is of cuddling. Rae’s Mae is luminous and charismatic, with wide eyes that convey so many emotions. When Rae (HBO’s “Insecure”) bursts into a laugh, she seems to tap into that joyful, infectious place that Julia Roberts does.

Their initial mating dance is as cute as any rom-com — who’s making the first move? — before they finally get together and have a meal. And how refreshing it is to hear a debate over who’s the better rapper — Drake or Kendrick Lamar — as the first date conversation?

But Meghie (“The Weekend”) is not interested in a mere rom-com and “ The Photograph ” has miles more heft and depth. She’s interested in exploring how behavior can be inherited, how ambition can topple personal lives, how we establish patterns in our love life and how bravery in romance can be just about saying what your heart feels.

It turns out that Mae’s estranged mother — a wonderful, haunted Chanté Adams — was a driven photographer who wasn’t always able to convey her feelings. “I wish I was as good at love as I am at working,” she observes. In death, she leaves behind letters explaining her life, which lead her daughter and her new beau to investigate.

The film takes turns switching eras to tell each woman’s story — from New York’s trendy whiskey bars and the sleek leather couches of upscale apartments to the faded grandeur of New Orleans in the 1980s. The filmmakers change film techniques and styles for each venue, deepening an experience that’s also reflected in changing music, time-traveling from Anderson .Paak to Chaka Khan.

As Mae keeps digging, she unpacks more than just her mom’s secrets. “What if I’m just like her?” she asks at one point. Her dad, played by Courtney B. Vance, tries to help: “She wasn’t just your mother,” he tells her. “She was just a woman with flaws.”

Some of the best scenes are when the daughter unknowingly finds herself following in the same physical footsteps as her mom some 40 years later — the same kitchen, the same darkroom, and even to the same swanky but crumbling New Orleans lounge, up the same winding staircase to cuddle with her own love interest.

Smaller parts in the film are filled with real skill, especially by Lil Rel Howery, who plays Michael’s brother with what seems a comedian’s effortless lightness, and Y’Lan Noel and Rob Morgan, who each play the former lover of Mae’s mother in the different eras.

Meghie’s script is very human, respectful of hesitancy and thoughtful without being flashy. “Good things take time to develop,” Michael says at one point, which has a double meaning when it comes to photographs. The camera lovingly comes very close to the faces of our main lovers, allowing two people to quietly show their torn emotions.

This film won us over long before it is revealed that Michael’s longtime goal is to join The Associated Press. (It helped, but no.) We were on board during an early scene in which a powerful storm is battering New York and our new couple must flee to safety. They pack only the most crucial items — including an Al Green record, deemed “essential.” Wise decision. This Valentine’s Day, make “The Photograph” essential, too.

“The Photograph,” a Universal Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for sexuality and brief strong language. Running time: 106 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Gayle King Accepts Snoop Dogg’s Apology For Rant Over Kobe

“I accept the apology and understand the raw emotions caused by this tragic loss,” King said in a statement to The Associated Press.

NEW YORK (AP) — Gayle King says she accepts Snoop Dogg’s apology, and the CBS anchor says she’s sorry that her interview last week added to the pain of people grieving over Kobe Bryant’s death.

The rapper had posted a profane, threatening video directed toward King last week following her interview with WNBA star Lisa Leslie. He was mad King had asked Leslie, in the wake of Bryant’s death in a helicopter crash, whether a 2003 sexual abuse allegation damaged the former Los Angeles Laker’s legacy.

While others shared his anger, Snoop Dogg was criticized for the ugliness of his threat. He posted an apology on Instagram, saying “when you’re wrong, you gotta fix it.”

“I accept the apology and understand the raw emotions caused by this tragic loss,” King said in a statement to The Associated Press.

She said it was never her intention to add to the pain.

“As a journalist, it is sometimes challenging to balance doing my job with the emotions and feelings during difficult times,” King said. “I don’t always get it perfect but I’m constantly striving to do it with compassion and integrity.”

Meanwhile, another former Lakers star, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, wrote a column in the Hollywood Reporter on Thursday decrying the abusive language and threats directed toward King as a bad message to send to young black men.

“Kobe would not have appreciated the attacks against Gayle King because he knew they perpetuated a climate of disrespect that would be physically, mentally and socially harmful toward all women, including his wife and daughters,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote.

DC Drivers Could Face Fine For Blocking Bike Lanes

“The new law will give us an opportunity to take a photo and mail it to the resident—even if they drive off before we can give it to them—and, hopefully, change the behavior.”

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson

Beginning February 28, the D.C. Department of Public Works will begin issuing tickets to any driver seen “improperly parking, stopping or leaving a bike lane.”

The bike lane enforcement program is a part of the “DC Vision Zero” law enforcement program to reduce the number of traffic-related deaths and serious injuries in The District to zero by 2024.

In November, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced she was increasing the number of Parking Enforcement Officials (PEOs) to enhance bike lane safety. Since then, 26 new PEOs were added to the existing 272. In each area, there is at least one person dedicated to monitoring the bike lanes.

“In building safer bike lanes we can keep our roads and sidewalks safe for all who use them, encourage residents and visitors to explore alternate modes of transportation, and work toward our Vision Zero goals,” she said in a statement.

The PEOs will photograph vehicles blocking bike lanes and mail citations to the vehicle owners if the ticket is not presented to the owner in person.

“The new law will give us an opportunity to take a photo and mail it to the resident—even if they drive off before we can give it to them—and, hopefully, change the behavior,” said DPW Director Chris Geldart in the same statement.

House Committee Mulls DC Statehood

D.C. Statehood Up For Vote

(Washington, DC) — For the first time since 1993, the District of Columbia’s bid for statehood comes up for a vote by members of Congress. The House Oversight and Reform Committee has scheduled a vote on House Bill 51 which sets the wheels in motion for the District to become the 51st state of the United States. With 224 co-sponsors, the measure is expected to pass the committee and make it to the House floor for a vote. According to the D.C. Statehood Office, 86-percent of voters in the District support statehood. A recent Gallup poll however found most Americans are not in favor of statehood for Washington, D.C. If approved by Congress, a constitutional amendment is still needed to make D.C. a state.

‘Hair Love’ Snags An Oscar Win

Deandre and his mom were the “official guests of the Oscar-nominated team” behind “Hair Love.”

One of the most touching wins of this year’s Oscars went to “Hair Love,” a short film about a the love between a father and daughter showcased through caring for her hair. The film took home the award for Best Animated Short Film.

The short film by Director Matthew A. Cherry, was released by Sony Pictures Animation in last December.  Some of the producers include Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwayne Wade and Jordan Peele, and features Issa Rae.

Cherry was joined on the red carpet by Deandre Arnold, a high school student from Texas that was told he could not attend his graduation unless he cut off his dreadlocks. because they violated school dress codes.

Arnold’s story stirred national outrage and prompted action against hair discrimination. Celebrities rounded up support for the teenager. He appeared on an episode of “The Ellen Show” where host Ellen DeGeneres and musician Alicia Keys presented him with a $20,000 for his college tuition.

Gabrielle Union-Wade and Dwayne Wade two of the “Hair Love” producers invited Arnold and his mom to be “the official guests of the Oscar-nominated team” and walk the red carpet with the director on “CBS this Morning.”
