Protecting Against Coronavirus

Masks that people are using to protect against the coronavirus are harder to come by in the DC area.

(Washington, DC) — As cases of coronavirus continue to grow, the number of face masks in the Washington area are dwindling. Fears over China’s coronavirus have found face masks selling out at numerous pharmacies and medical supply stores. With China reporting more than 31-thousand cases, U.S. officials say the virus’ risk to Americans is low, but that is not stopping people from running out to the store to purchase the masks. In Northeast Washington, the Reliance Pharmacy on Minnesota Avenue reports it ran out of masks last week while a CVS store on Bladensburg Road says it hasn’t had the item in stock for two weeks. Some doctors argue the face masks aren’t design to stop the transmission of respiratory illnesses adding that the best way to avoid infection is to wash your hands and not touch your face.

Anyone who faces discrimination because of their hairstyles can seek a civil penalty of up to five-thousand-dollars through the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights. The county said the aim of the new law was meant to limit prejudice felt by residents. Montgomery County becomes the first local jurisdiction to introduce such a law.

Pelosi And Trump Feud

Tensions rose between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Trump today.

(Washington, DC) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says President Trump treated the State of the Union address like a reality TV show. Talking to reporters at the Capitol, Pelosi said Trump’s speech was riddled with falsehoods and had no connection to reality. She argued that Trump’s claim of inheriting a mess was wrong. Pelosi insisted that Trump inherited a strong and growing economy from President Obama. Pelosi ripped up Trump’s speech when he was finished on Tuesday night. She said the address was “beneath the dignity of the White House.” Pelosi also slammed Republicans who chanted “Four more years!” She called it totally inappropriate and said it was a serious breach of congressional decorum.  At the National Prayer breakfast the President also criticized Mitt Romney, not by name, using faith to do something that was wrong.

Gayle King Responds To Backlash After Viral Video

From Snoop Dogg to Vivica Fox, people are outraged with how Gayle King spoke on the late Kobe Bryant.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

CBS This Morning host, Gayle King, interviewed former WNBA star Lisa Leslie on the passing of Kobe Bryant. During the interview King brought up the subject of the rape case that was brought against Bryant in 2003.

King asked question’s such as ” It’s been said that his legacy is complicated, because of a sexual assault charge that was dismissed in 2003, 2004. Is it complicated for you, as a woman, as a WNBA player?”

Leslie who was a close friend of Bryant’s denied any wrong doing on Bryant’s part, stating, “It’s not complicated for me at all … I just never see — have ever seen him being the kind of person that would be — do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That’s just not the person that I know.”

When the clip of the video was released online, supporters of the late Bryant were outraged with King for trying to “tarnish” the former NBA legend’s name.  Snoop Dogg, Boosie BadAzz and Vivica Fox notably spoke out against the reporter.

King responded to the backlash this morning in a Twitter video. She stated she hadn’t even seen the clip until people started commenting on it. She also expressed her anger with CBS for taking the clip out of context.

“I’ve been up reading the comments about the interview I did with Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant,” said King. “And I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw, I’d be extremely angry with me too. I am mortified. I am embarrassed and I am very angry. Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview — totally taken out of context — and when you see it that way, it’s very jarring. It’s jarring to me. I didn’t even know anything about it.”

King says she too had a friendly relationship with Bryant and no disrespect was intended by the interview.

***BREAKING NEWS*** PRESIDENT TRUMP ACQUITTED IN IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Not Guilty: Split Senate acquits Trump of impeachment

The U.S. Senate has acquitted President Donald Trump of impeachment, ending only the third presidential trial in American history with votes that split the country and tested civic norms. The proceedings also are feeding the tumultuous 2020 run for the White House. A majority of senators expressed unease with Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine that resulted in the two articles of impeachment. But there was nowhere near the two-thirds vote necessary in the Republican-held Senate to remove the president from office. He was found not guilty of both articles of impeachment. Trump is eager to use the tally as vindication, a political anthem in his reelection bid.

Mitt Romney to Vote for Trump Conviction

Romney: Trump Guilty Of Abuse Of Power

(Washington, DC) — Senator Mitt Romney says President Trump is guilty and should be convicted of abuse of power. Speaking on the Senate floor, the Utah Republican said Trump asked a foreign government to investigate a political rival and must be removed. He called it a flagrant assault on fundamental values and an appalling abuse of public trust. Prior to the final Senate votes on impeachment, Romney criticized fellow Republicans for blocking witness testimony in the Senate trial.

Romney added — “Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine.” He said the Trump case will be appealed to a higher court — the American voters — in November. Romney was the Republican presidential nominee in 2012 and is a former GOP governor of Massachusetts.

Among the works getting the update are Romeo and Juliet, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A number of people on Twitter responded by saying promoting a bunch of white authors who wrote about white characters is not honoring Black History Month. They suggested instead the bookseller should promote black authors and black stories.

Iowa Caucus Results To Be Released At 5PM Today

At least half Iowa results expected by day’s end, Dems say

Democratic Party officials in Iowa are planning to release a majority of their delayed caucus results by 5 p.m. EST. The party officials in Iowa told the presidential campaigns the news as chaos and confusion hung over Iowa and its first-in-the-nation presidential contest. Frustrated presidential candidates plowed ahead in their quest for nomination, most of them already in next-up New Hampshire. All claimed to be encouraged by Iowa voters  in Monday’s voting, especially Vermont Sen. Bernie Senators and Pete Buttigieg of Indiana. Republican President Donald Trump mocked them all and their party and said he was the only one who could claim a victory in Iowa.

Joaquin Phoenix Criticizes Film Industry For ‘Systemic Racism’

“This is not a self-righteous condemnation,” Phoenix explained, adding that he’s “ashamed to admit” that he’s a part of the problem. “I have not done everything in my power to ensure that the sets I work on are inclusive.”

“Joker” actor Joaquin Phoenix spoke out against “systemic racism” during an acceptance speech for Best Actor at the 2020 BAFTAS Sunday night. The organization failed to nominate a single non-white actor in its major categories.

“I think that it’s more than just having sets that are multicultural,” the actor said. “I think that we have to really do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism.”

The actor — who won the Golden Globe, SAG and is predicted to win the Oscar for “Joker” — began his speech by saying he felt “conflicted” accepting the award.

“I feel very honored and privileged to be here tonight and BAFTA has always been very supportive of my career, and I am deeply appreciative,” he began, adding, “But I have to say that I also feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege.”

“I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you are not welcome here,” Phoenix continued. “I think that is the message that we are sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry — and in ways that we benefit from.”

“I don’t think anybody wants a handout or a preferential treatment, although that is what we give ourselves every year,” he added. “I think that people just want to be acknowledged and appreciated and respected for their work.”

“This is not a self-righteous condemnation,” Phoenix explained, adding that he’s “ashamed to admit” that he’s a part of the problem. “I have not done everything in my power to ensure that the sets I work on are inclusive.”

“But I think that it’s more than just having sets that are multicultural I think that we have to really do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism,” he concluded. “I think that it is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the one to dismantle it. So that’s on us.”

There was visibly an uncomfortable silence that fell over the crowd until the crowd erupted into applause.

Thank you Joaquin!

DC Auto Thefts Increase

Technology increasing auto thefts in DC.

(Washington, DC) — There has been a spike in auto thefts in the District and the Office of the Attorney General believes it knows why. Attorney General Karl Racine believes 75 percent of auto thefts are connected to the car rental app Getaround. Racine says he believes car thieves search the app for available vehicles. Getaround allows drivers instant access to search, rent and unlock thousands of cars, trucks and vans available nearby. The Attorney General says once an available car is located, thieves know the keys are somewhere inside. D.C. Police report more than 200 cars have already been stolen in 2020 representing a 38 percent increase in car thefts in the District over the same period last year.
