Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar has suspended her 2020 presidential campaign. Klobuchar plans to support former Vice-President Joe Biden.  An announcement will be made at a rally in Dallas, Texas.  Klobuchar is the third democratic hopeful to drop out the race for The White House since Biden’s commanding win in the South Carolina Primary on Saturday.  Billionaire Tom Steyer and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg ended their campaigns over the weekend. The announcement comes a day before 14 states hold primaries on Super Tuesday.

I gotta give it to Oprah! She can the story from almost anybody. At Oprah’s 2020 Vision event in Dallas recently, Jennifer Lopez revealed that her and Alex Rodriguez are not in a hurry to get married at all.

Jlo was married 3 other times and probably learned a little somethin along the way. Jlo says, “It was different than anything I had ever experienced in the sense of his consistency,” she also said. “Like what he says he does every time. And he also wants to build together, which I’ve never had. I’ve never had, you know, somebody who wants to see me shine and grow and be.”

Kanye West brought church to Paris Fashion Week when he held his Sunday Service in Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord at 8 AM.

Among the crowd were designers, stylists, writers, editors, West’s wife Kim and daughter North, as well as Kim’s sister Kourtney and her daughter Penelope. Unlike previous Sunday services, the venue held more than just West’s close family and friends and ticket buyers. The crowd surrounded the tight knit circle of West, his choir, and the pastor.

Although the obvious focus is religion, there was an emphasis on fashion as well. West dressed himself and his choir in matching beige outfits consisting of, according to Vogue, a “V-neck top, loose pants, turtleneck, gold necklace, and Yeezy sneakers.” Ironically, West delivered a sermon about materialism in front of the star-studded crowd. During the sermon, he says, “A lot of time we put our faith and trust in people, we put our faith and trust in material things.”

‘Inside the Actors Studio’ Host Dies at 93

Host of Inside the Actors Studio, James Lipton died today at the age of 93. His wife informed that his cause of death was bladder cancer.

Lipton spent 23 season, beginning in 1994, as the Inside the Actors Studio host. He left the show in 2019 when it changed networks. Lipton conceived the idea for the show in 1992 ads a master class for the Actors Studio Drama school which was a collaboration of the Actors  Studio and The New School.

During his time as host, nearly 300 people sat down with Lipton from Alec Baldwin to Julia Roberts. He would interview guest for over four hours and then cut the video down for television. Lipton was known for getting celebrities to open up about themselves. Lipton did all of his own research for the show and spent weeks preparing to meet with guests.

“If you had put a gun to my head and said, ‘I will pull the trigger unless you predict that in 23 years, Inside the Actors Studio will be viewed in 94 million homes in America on Bravo and in 125 countries around the world, that it will have received 16 Emmy nominations, making it the fifth most-nominated series in the history of television, that it will have received an Emmy Award for outstanding informational series and that you will have received the Critics’ Choice Award for best reality series host — predict it or die,’ I would have said, ‘Pull the trigger,'” said Lipton to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lipton won a Critics Choice Award for best reality series host and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Daytime Emmy’s in 2016. Inside the Actors Studio became one of the top rated shows on television.

We are excited to announce Howard University alumna, trustee and financial industry trailblazer Leslie D. Hale will serve as the 2020 Charter Day Convocation orator during the 153rd Charter Day Convocation on Friday, March 6.

Trustee Hale is the president and chief executive officer of RLJ Lodging Trust, a leading hotel real estate investment trust. Since joining the organization in 2005, she has played a pivotal role in setting and executing the strategic vision at the firm and has held progressively senior-level roles during her tenure. She was appointed in 2007 to serve as chief financial officer, in 2016 she was elevated to chief operating officer and in 2018 she was named president and chief executive officer. She helped lead the successful initial public offering of RLJ Lodging Trust in 2011 and is a member of RLJ Lodging Trust’s board of directors.

In addition to RLJ Lodging Trust, Trustee Hale serves on the board of directors for Macy’s Inc. and has served since 2013 as a Howard University trustee. Other organizational memberships include the Marriott International National Association Advisory Board, the Nareit Advisory Board, the American Hotel and Lodging Association Executive Board and the Industry Real Estate Financing Advisory Council. Before joining RLJ Lodging Trust, Trustee Hale held senior positions at GE, working in the Commercial Finance Mergers and Acquisitions Group and the Real Estate Strategic Capital Group. She was also an investment banker with Goldman Sachs, advising on mergers, acquisitions and corporate finance.

Trustee Hale earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in finance from Howard University in 1994, graduating summa cum laude (Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society) and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, where she was a Goldman Sachs and Robert F. Toigo Fellow.

The more often you exercise, the more calories you burn, right? Not quite, finds a new study. Working out too much can actually make you less active during your non-workout hours—walking the dog, running errands, playing with the kids—resulting in fewer calories burned by the end of the day.

You heard that right: If you work out too much, you’ll actually burn less calories overall.

According to a recent study, 72 women ages 60 to 74 were split into three groups: women who strength trained once a week and did aerobic activity once a week; women who strength trained twice a week and did aerobic activity twice a week; and women who strength trained three times a week and did aerobic activity three times a week. Each workout took about 40 minutes.

Hundreds of Howard University students are preparing to forgo their traditional Spring Break to roll up their sleeves to provide community service in neighborhoods around the globe. It’s called Alternative Spring Break and the need for help in these communities is greater than ever.

WHUR Sunday hosts Patrick Ellis, Jacquie Gales Webb and Stretch Garrett are asking you to give to 96.3 WHUR’s Helping Hands Radiothon. We need your assistance to make their mission possible. With your help, hundreds of Howard students will be able to tutor, mentor, address gun violence, tackle poverty, and so much more in U.S. communities and around the globe.

Students will be providing services to communities in Albany, GA; The Bahamas; Baltimore, MD; Birmingham, AL; Camden, NJ; Philadelphia, PA; Charleston, WV; Chicago, IL; Flint/Detroit, MI; Ghana; Little Rock/Pine Bluff, AR; Lumberton, NC; Memphis, TN; Milwaukee, WI; New Orleans, LA; Oakland, CA; Puerto Rico; Richmond, VA; Savannah, GA; St. Louis, MO; Washington, DC; and Williston, SC.

Today, Horace and Dickies closes its doors for the last time. Long time DC residents have frequented the “little fish spot” on 12th and H ST for 30 years! Even with lines flowing out of the door, Horace & Dickies was definitely a go to spot any given PAY DAY!

 

DCist reports —

“Horace and Dickies has been an institution on H Street NE for 30 years and there’s no way to sugarcoat  news of their closure – it’s a loss for the community today and a loss connecting the neighborhood to its past,” says Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen.

This afternoon I will brave the line and order my usual fried fish dinner with double fries and mambo sauce on everything! Anybody need me to pick them up something?

Thank you DMV for showing us so much LOVE last night at Sax Dinner Theater and Lounge! The energy was on ten. The entertainment was off the hook. The ambiance was incredible and the LOVE was real.

More importantly, THANK YOU for all the love and support over the past year. We were able to finally put faces to the names and voices over the phone. We enjoyed ourselves and we hope you did too. Shoutout to our Afternoon Show winners who received the full VIP treatment.

Deputies Questioned About Kobe Bryant Crash Photos

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities are investigating whether deputies shared graphic photos of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others. The Los Angeles Times reports Friday that a public safety source with knowledge of the events had seen one of the photos on the phone of another official in a setting that was not related to the investigation of the crash. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the allegations. Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Maria Lucero told The Associated Press “the matter is being looked into.”

New DC Bike Lane Fines Take Effect Tomorrow

(Washington, DC)  —  Tomorrow, Saturday, February 29th is Leap Day. It is also the day that new traffic fines take effect in the District for motorists who block, stop or park in a bike lane. Starting tomorrow, the Department of Public Works will begin issuing citations to violators to the tune of 150-dollar.  The new law marks a milestone for bike advocates who have fought for stricter protections to keep bicyclists and pedestrians safe while riding and walking in D.C. Nearly 300 DPW Parking Enforcement Officers will be able to issue fines. The officer will first snap a picture of the violator’s vehicle before issuing a ticket. If a driver pulls away before the ticket can be served, the DPW will mail the fine to the violators.

DC Prepares For A Drop In Tourism Due To The Coronavirus

Washington D.C. is expecting a sharp decline in tourism in the coming months due to the coronavirus.

“The fact that the number one market for Washington, D.C. is China and nobody in China can physically fly out of the country is a big concern,” Elliot Ferguson, president of Destination D.C., says in DCist, the city’s tourism-promotion arm.

China has been the top country for tourists coming to D.C. since 2013. Over 226,000 Chinese visitors came to The District in 2018, a 25% from 2017, but they stayed for longer periods of time, according to Desitination D.C.

“We’re watching this very carefully and realizing that until flights are allowed back in the U.S., we’re looking at a no-go in terms of the potential for visitation,” Ferguson said according to Bisnow. “But we’re cautiously optimistic that this is something we’ll be able to rebound from, and we’re looking at the opportunities for us in other international markets that continue to strengthen.”

This may also affect business travel as well. Ferguson says the International Association of Dental Research’s conference in the mid-March at the Washington Convention Center will most likely see a decline in attendance due to the 700 memebrs that live in China.

‘The Proud Family’ Set To Return This Year

Disney’s hit animated series “The Proud Family” is set to return in 2020 on Disney+ streaming service.

“The Proud Family”, shows us the animated tales of 14-year-old Penny Proud as she begins to assert her independence and experience the ups and downs of growing up, with guidance from her close-knit family. The old favorite, which initially aired in the early 2000’s, is coming back with an all new original-series titled, “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder”. The reboot of the show was announced by Disneyplus on Instagram this week.


According to People.com  , the show will keep it’s original cast, Kyla Pratt as Penny Proud,  Tommy Davidson as Oscar Proud, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy Proud, Jo Marie Payton as Suga Mama, Karen Malina White as Dijonay Jones, Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howzer, Alisa Reyes as LaCienega Boulevardez and Cedric the Entertainer will continue as Uncle Bobby Proud.

Kyla Pratt also shares her excitement on an Instagram post saying, “Official Official !!!!!! The Proud Family is coming back!!!!! #LouderandProuder !!! All new episodes are coming soon to @Disneyplus !!!! So grateful and excited and happy the news is finally officially out so y’all can stop harassing me 😂 #PennyProud 🙌🏽.” 

An exact date for the release has not been confirmed, but in the meantime, the original series is currently available to watch on Disney+.

(Washington, D.C.)  —  If everything goes according to schedule, residents who work and plan on voting on primary election day could receive a two-hour leave under legislation approved by D.C. Council committees. The measure, which still must be approved by the entire council and signed by the mayor, compels businesses to give workers two hours of paid leave on Primary Election Day.  The council committees also approved a measure that would require the Board of Elections to create a voter registration packet to be handed out to every new tenant and home buyer in the District.  Primary day in D.C. is on June 2nd.

For starters, I’m shocked at all that Beyonce would request that no photos be taken of her during her performance at the Kobe & Gianna Memorial on Monday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. She has made this request other events and for other reasons.

Sources are reporting that before her performance, Beyonce informed the venue and security that photographers would not be permitted to take photos of her out of respect for the family. She also said she did not want to take the focus off of the family at this emotional moment.

Beyonce added that Kobe and Vanessa were close friends of both her and Jay Z and that they had even spent New Years Eve’s together. Click here for more on this story

Former Baltimore Mayor Sentenced To Prison

Former Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh has been sentence to three years for her role in the Healthy Holly Book scandal. The prosecution asked for a sentence of close to five years, while the defense asked for one year and one day.  Pugh was also ordered to pay $400,000 to the University of Maryland Medical System and almost $12,000 to the Maryland Auto Insurance Fund.  Both organizations bought books from Pugh. Her sentence begins on April 13th. There is no immediate word on where Pugh could serve out her sentence.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in a lucrative, years long scheme that sold her self-published children’s books to nonprofits and foundations to promote her political career and fund her run for mayor.

Pugh, 69, pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and tax evasion charges in November. The veteran Democratic politician was elected mayor in 2016 and resigned in May after authorities began investigating bulk sales of “Healthy Holly” books that netted her hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Pugh’s attorneys have suggested a sentence of 366 days, while prosecutors have asked for nearly five years.

Prosecutors accused Pugh of double selling the books, keeping many for self-promotion purposes and failing to deliver them to institutions they were purchased for, including the Baltimore City Public Schools. Pugh used the proceeds to fund straw donations to her mayoral campaign and buy a new house, according to the sentencing memoradum filed by prosecutors.

Pugh, with the assistance of longtime aide Gary Brown Jr., carefully carried out the scheme over more than seven years, starting when she was a Maryland state senator and into her tenure as Baltimore’s mayor. Her clients included the University of Maryland Medical System, health insurers and other organizations.

Brown and another Pugh associate, Roslyn Wedington, await sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy and tax fraud.

One of my favorites, Octavia Spencer is set to star as the first african american female millionaire Madam C.J. Walker. You probably remember Octavia for her roles in Hidden Figures, The Help, Ma and many more.

On March 20th 2020 Netflix is releasing a 4 part special titled “Self Made, Inspired the Life of Madam CJ Walker that share the her inspirational story of how she became the first black female millionaire, the racism she faced and other challenges.

New Age Progressed Photo of Relisha Rudd Released

A new picture of missing DC youth Relisha Rudd has been released and officials are hoping this new enhanced photo of what the girl would look like today could help in the search. Rudd disappeared in March 2014 at the age of 8. She would now be 14-years-old.

(Thursday, February, 27 2020) – The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has released a new photo of missing 8-year-old Relisha Rudd.  The age progressed picture of the missing District of Columbia youth shows what Rudd would look like today.   The girl went missing in March 2014 after being seen on video with a janitor at the now closed DC General Shelter.  The worker, Kahlil Tatum later committed suicide.  Relisha Rudd has not been found.

Washington, DC. – (Thursday, February 27, 2020) – Vice President Mike Pence is the man now leading the charge in the U.S.  to tackle the coronavirus as officials prepare for what will likely become a global pandemic.  President Trump tapped Pence for the position yesterday at an evening press conference with health experts.  Meantime, Americans are being told to stay informed and connected by visiting the State Department and the Centers for Disease Control websites for the latest on the virus.

(Washington, DC)  —  President Trump is reportedly considering the appointment a coronavirus czar.  He as called for a new conference tonight at 6 p.m. to make the announcement. Politico says the appointee would coordinate the U.S. government response to the growing global threat.  President Obama appointed veteran political operative Ron Klain to oversee U.S. efforts to help stop the Ebola outbreak in 2014.  Meantime, President Trump is accusing the news media of stoking panic about the coronavirus.  U.S. health officials warned this week that an outbreak in America is inevitable.

Six-Year-Old Arrested For Throwing A Tantrum

Kaia Rolle, a six-year-old Florida school girl, was arrested and zip tied after police officials arrived at her school.

“Kaia was brought to the station, had her fingerprints recorded and even had a mugshot taken, State Attorney Aramis Ayala later confirmed. No charges were ultimately filed against her.”

In the video, the interaction and conversation between Rolle and the officer is difficult to watch. As the officer pulled out the zip ties, you can hear Rolle saying “what are those for?” She then went on to beg the officer to not take her as she broke down in tears. 

According to METRO news site “Turner was fired shortly after the arrest. Orlando police chief Orlando Rolon said at the time that Turner did not follow department policy of getting the approval of a watch commander to arrest someone younger than 12.”

Rolle’s grandmother expressed that the footage was difficult to watch. She said “Kaia’s temper was a side effect of sleep apnea, a medical condition that means breathing stops and starts while you sleep” as stated by METRO news. 

An internal investigation is underway.

Tyra Banks has officially launched a theme park that is bringing modeling back to life. Tickets to the ModelLand theme park officially went on sale this Monday with some pricey options. 

According to lovebscott.com, the theme park is “located at Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, California, the 21,000-square-foot destination will allow guests to experience ‘the ultimate modeling fantasy.’”

Banks’ mission, as stated on the official website, “is to bring modeling to the masses in ways beyond what I did with America’s Next Top Model. I want to redefine what a model and modeling means.” Banks began America’s Next Top Model, a modeling competition show, in 2003. 

General access, Fantascene Photoshoot and Fantascene Dream are the three available options for purchase. General access starts at $59 and includes “Your very own personalized digital lookbook – customized with phierce photos of you, access to shop the many ModelLand experiential closets” and more, according to the website. 

However, the most expensive ticket, Fantascene Dream, is listed at $1,495. This access includes “The Ultimate Concierge service, additional wardrobe changes, additional high-fashion photographs, model goodies gift bag, curated by Tyra and much more.”

Banks is currently promoting ModelLand across all social platforms and the attraction is set to officially open on May 1st.

A viral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 81,000 people globally. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

The latest figures reported by each government’s health authority as of Wednesday in Beijing:

— Mainland China: 2,715 deaths among 78,064 cases, mostly in the central province of Hubei

— Hong Kong: 81 cases, 2 deaths

— Macao: 10 cases

— South Korea: 1,261 cases, 11 deaths

— Japan: 885 cases, including 705 from a cruise ship docked in Yokohama, 7 deaths

— Italy: 323 cases, 11 deaths

— Iran: 139 cases, 19 deaths

— Singapore: 93

— United States: 57

— Thailand: 40

— Taiwan: 32 cases, 1 death

— Bahrain: 26

— Australia: 23

— Malaysia: 22

— Kuwait: 18

— France: 17 cases, 2 deaths

You’ve heard about the Central Park 5 but what about the Groveland Four? Folks get your popcorn, there will probably be another box office film on this one. In 1949, 4 African American men wrongly accused of an attack on a man and a raping a 17 year old girl in Groveland Florida.

Recently, Charles Greenlee, Walter Irvin, Samuel Shepherd and Earnest Thomas were all exonerated of the crime by the Florida Republican Governor Rick DeSantis . All of the men are deceased except one.

Several family members of the Groveland 4 were present at an event where a memorial was revealed exonerating them.

HU Hosts Special Screening and Panel Discussion of HBO Documentary ‘True Justice’

Howard University will join the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) on Friday, Feb. 28 for a condensed screening of the HBO documentary True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality beginning at 7 p.m. in the Howard University Law School’s Dunbarton Chapel located at 2900 Van Ness St. NW.

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, February 25, 2020) – Squire Patton Boggs is joining Howard University School of Law, WHUT, and 96.3 WHUR for a special documentary film screening and panel discussion of the HBO Documentary “True Justice:  Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality” Friday, February 28th at 7pm at the School of Law Dunbarton Chapel.

The abbreviated film screening and discussion is part of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), which works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality.  The documentary follows the life and career of public interest attorney Bryan Stevenson, who is the founder of EJI.  For more than three decades, Stevenson has advocated on behalf of the poor, the incarcerated, and the condemned.

Following the condensed film screening, a panel discussion will be moderated by Squire Patton Boggs law firm partner J.R. Clark.
