IRS Warns of ‘Ghost’ Tax Return Preparers

Taxpayers are warned to review all documents before submitting taxes.

Contribute by Jordyn Fields

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is warning taxpayers to look out for ‘ghost’ tax return preparers. A ghost preparer is someone who print tax returns but refuse to sign the tax return they have prepared with electronically and physically.

Ghost tax preparers may promise a bigger return that seem tempting but taxpayers are warned to steer clear. “They may invent income so that you qualify for tax credits, they may claim fake deductions so that you qualify for a larger refund,”said IRS spokesperson Michael Devine.

According to the IRS this can move into tax fraud and cause real issues for those involved.

“Taxpayers should verify both their routing and bank account number on the completed tax return for any direct deposit refund. And taxpayers should watch out for ghost preparers inserting their bank account information onto the returns.,” says the IRS.

The deadline to file taxes is April 15.

Beyoncé, Jay-Z Sit During National Anthem At Super Bowl

Jay-Z’s response was that he still supports protesting, kneeling and Kaepernick, but he’s also interested in working with the league to make substantial changes.

Video of Beyoncé and Jay-Z sitting while Demi Lovato sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl has surfaced online.

TMZ posted the video Sunday of the celebrity couple sitting along with daughter Blue Ivy at Hard Rock Stadium, where the San Francisco 49ers were playing the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jay-Z, a co-producer of the halftime show featuring Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, announced his Roc Nation company had entered a partnership with the NFL for events and social activism last year. The rapper received immediate backlash since he had become one of the biggest supporters of Colin Kaepernick, who sparked a fissure in the NFL when he decided to kneel when the national anthem was played before games to protest the killings of blacks by police officers.

Jay-Z’s response was that he still supports protesting, kneeling and Kaepernick, but he’s also interested in working with the league to make substantial changes.

Representatives for Jay-Z and Beyoncé didn’t immediately reply to emails seeking comment.

Super Rally: Mahomes, Chiefs Win NFL Title With Late Surge

“We never lost faith,” Mahomes said. “That’s the biggest thing. Everybody on this team, no one had their head down. We believed in each other. That’s what we preached all year long.”

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes needed just the waning minutes of Super Bowl 54 to end a whole lot of frustration.

A championship 50 years in the making for the Kansas City Chiefs.

A two-decade wait for an NFL title for coach Andy Reid.

All it took was falling behind by double digits in the postseason, again. Then Mahomes found his mojo. The 24-year-old quarterback who was selected Super Bowl MVP, led the Chiefs to 21 straight points in the final 6:13 for a 31-20 victory Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers.

“We never lost faith,” Mahomes said. “That’s the biggest thing. Everybody on this team, no one had their head down. We believed in each other. That’s what we preached all year long.”

The Chiefs (15-4) trailed 24-0 and 17-7 in their previous playoff games, both in the first half. In the big game, they nearly didn’t have time for a comeback.

Kansas City’s fans in the crowd of 62,417 at Hard Rock Stadium got little opportunity to chant and do the tomahawk chop as KC fell behind 20-10 in the third quarter. Mahomes even threw his second interception of the night after they fell behind.

But the vaunted 49ers defense wilted late and Mahomes brought the magic that makes him so special.

He completed passes of 44 yards to Tyreek Hill and 38 to Sammy Watkins. The touchdowns came on short throws to Travis Kelce to cut the deficit to three and to Damien Williams for the lead. The first NFL title in Reid’s two-decade career was clinched by Williams’ 38-yard TD run, sending red-clad Chiefs fans into chants of “Andy!” Andy!”

Reid, 61, won a Super Bowl ring with the 1996 Packers while in charge of tight ends. He’s been seeking one as a head coach since being hired by Philadelphia in 1999. The Eagles lost in their only trip to the big game under Reid after the 2004 season.

“This is what it’s all about,” Reid said as confetti fell and the Chiefs celebrated the climax of the NFL’s 100th season. “What a great team, great coaches. Appreciate every bit of it.”

Mahomes found Hill, whose bobble led to the second San Francisco pick, for 44 yards on a third-and-15 — the first long pass completed by Kansas City. A 20-yard pass interference call on Tarvarius Moore, who had that earlier pick, put the ball at the 1 and Kelce was wide open for the score.

The Chiefs defense, confounded by the Niners’ misdirection much of the game, got stingy and forced a three-and-out. Mahomes soon hit Watkins down the right sideline behind Richard Sherman for a 38-yard gain, leading to Williams’ first score.

San Francisco (15-4) had nothing left in the fourth quarter, and its coach, Kyle Shanahan saw yet another late-game meltdown by his team. Three years ago, as offensive coordinator in Atlanta, he was part of the Falcons’ Super Bowl collapse and loss in overtime to New England.

“We’ll lick our wounds and we’ll get over this,” Shanahan said.

Kansas City, an original AFL franchise, won the final Super Bowl before the full merger, beating Minnesota in 1970. Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt even coined the phrase Super Bowl.

Now the Hunt family can add a Vince Lombardi Trophy to the Lamar Hunt Trophy earned with the AFC crown.

“It’s a beautiful trophy,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said. “I’m so happy for our players, coaches and fans. And especially Andy Reid. Nobody deserves this trophy more than Andy Reid.”

San Francisco went 4-12 in 2018 and Shanahan was on something of a hot seat this season. He came close to a ring once again, but down the stretch the Niners couldn’t slow the no-huddle attack at which Mahomes, Hill, Kelce, Williams and all the other Chiefs excel.

“We have heart,” Mahomes said. “We never give up and those guys around us, the leaders on the team , have that mindset that we never give up.”

The fourth quarter fireworks by the Chiefs were along the lines of the expected offensive explosion. Earlier, there were some strong drives but not a lot of huge plays.

After a tribute during the pregame ceremony to basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, who died a week ago in a helicpoter crash along with eight others, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Chris Doleman, who died Tuesday night of brain cancer, the 49ers used up nearly six minutes on their opening drive, yet got only Robbie Gould’s 38-yard field goal. Kansas City took up 7:26 for its next march, including a fourth-and-1 run by Williams on a direct snap to the 49ers 1. All four Chiefs in the backfield spun around before the snap.

Mahomes took it in to end the 15-play series on a run option.

The 7-3 deficit was the first for San Francisco since Game 15. It soon became 10-3 after Jimmy Garoppolo’s ill-advised lob under pressure was intercepted by Bashaud Breeland. Another fourth-down gamble paid off for KC, with Williams gaining 3 on a pitchout. But the Chiefs stalled and Harrison Butker kicked a 31-yard field goal.

San Francisco needed a spark and, as it often has this season, the running game provided it. Gouging the Chiefs in the trenches, the 49ers gained 53 yards on five straight rushes before Garoppolo hit on a pair of passes. The second completion, over the middle to Kyle Juszczyk, saw the fullback look like anything but with a nifty open-field move past safety Daniel Sorensen — perhaps Kansas City’s best tackle. J uszczyk surged into the end zone for a 15-yard TD to tie it at 10.

Once more, Garoppolo was brilliant on a drive after being picked off. He improved 39 for 42 for 461 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions with a 136.2 rating on such series after the TD.

Gould’s 42-yarder gave the Niners their first lead, capping the opening drive of the second half. Again, their misdirection plays kept the Chiefs off-balance on defense.

As Garoppolo did in the first half, Mahomes then threw into heavy coverage trying to hit Hill and was picked by Fred Warner. It was the first interception of Mahomes in five postseason games.

And it paid off with another efficient series for the Niners, keyed by a 26-yard completion to Kendrick Bourne on third down. Raheem Mostert, the star of the NFC title game, surged in from the 1 for a 20-10 edge.

Hardly unfamiliar territory for Kansas City.

“We have an ability as a team not just on offense, as team, to figure out what the other team is doing and put our foot in the ground and say enough is enough,” Kelce said. “It’s special.”

New Bolton Revelation Ties Trump To Ukraine Scandal

Report: Bolton Book Claims Trump Directed Him To Call Zelensky

(Washington, DC) — Former National Security Advisor John Bolton’s upcoming book claims President Trump asked him to call Ukraine’s president-elect and encourage him to meet with Rudy Giuliani. The New York Times reports that the President made the request in the Oval Office with Giuliani, acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, and White House Counsel Pat Cipollone present. Cipollone is leading the president’s defense in the impeachment trial. The claim would be direct evidence that President Trump was directly involved in the pressure campaign House managers claim was underway to use Ukraine to smear a political opponent.

Sentencing For Coast Guard Lieutenant

The man accused of drawing up a hit list against prominent politicians and journalists to be sentenced today.

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A Coast Guard lieutenant accused of stockpiling guns and drafting a hit list of prominent Democrats and TV journalists is scheduled to be sentenced today for his guilty plea to firearms and drug offenses.

Christopher Hasson, 50, faces a maximum of 31 years in prison at sentencing by U.S. District Judge George Hazel. He pleaded guilty in October to possessing unregistered and unserialized silencers, being a drug addict in possession of firearms and illegal possession of tramadol, an opioid painkiller.

Federal prosecutors recommended a 25-year prison sentence for Hasson. They have called him a domestic terrorist and self-described white nationalist who was intent on carrying out mass killings. But they didn’t file any terrorism-related charges against him.

Defense attorneys urged Hazel to spare Hasson from a prison term and sentence him to jail time served since his February 2019 arrest. Hasson’s lawyers accused Justice Department prosecutors of fabricating a bogus narrative that the married father of two grown children was planning a terrorist attack.

After Hasson’s arrest, prosecutors filed a memo in which they said the Coast Guard officer “intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.” They also said Hasson drafted and tried to delete a June 2017 email in which he wrote that he was “dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth.”

Prosecutors claim Hasson drew up what appeared to be a computer spreadsheet hit list naming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic presidential hopefuls, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren. He also mentioned several network TV journalists, including MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and Joe Scarborough and CNN’s Chris Cuomo and Van Jones.

Hasson’s attorneys urged the judge to “strip away all of the speculation and rhetoric” and sentence Hasson “proportionately” for the crimes to which he pleaded guilty.

“The government’s unproven claims about his private thoughts and beliefs and its conjecture about his plans and motives have no place in the sentencing courtroom and should have no bearing on the outcome,” they wrote.

Hasson ordered at least 4,650 tramadol pills from internet distributors and had them shipped to his homes in Maryland and Currituck, North Carolina, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Windom. The prosecutor said Hasson consumed most of the pills, often at work.

D.C. Mayor Bowser Endorses Bloomberg

Presidential hopeful Michael Bloomberg gets a nod from DC’s mayor

(Washington, DC) — Michael Bloomberg has picked up another big endorsement in his bid to be the next president of the United States. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser this morning has announced that she is endorsing the former New York City mayor for president in 2020. In a tweet today Bowser said Bloomberg was “the right leader to turn innovative ideas into reality.”

Bowser added that Bloomberg is a problem-solver with a proven track record of getting things done. Bloomberg, who was elected mayor of New York as a Republican, announced in November that he would seek the Democratic presidential nomination.

Mayor Bowser Plans To Enroll Her Daughter In DC Public Schools

“I want her to have friends in the neighborhood; I want her to be close to home, and if that school is right for her, that is probably where she is going.”

Mayor Muriel Bowser attended a D.C. Public Charter School meeting where she announced she will be sending her daughter, Miranda, to their local elementary school, according to the Washington Post.

Their assigned school is Shepherd Elementary School in Ward 4 D.C.

Mayor Bowser adopted Miranda in September 2018 and she is almost the preschoole age for D.C, three-years-old.

Bowser would be the first elected mayor to send their child to their neighborhood school. Although most of the elected officials did not have school-aged children, she would be on of the few to attend the assigned school.

“I would rather not spend an hour commuting,” Bowser said. “I want her to have friends in the neighborhood; I want her to be close to home, and if that school is right for her, that is probably where she is going.”

MD Bill Makes Free Menstrual Hygiene Products Available In Schools

“When we make students go to the nurse to get menstrual hygiene products, potentially waiting in line behind students with actual medical needs, we cause them to miss more class time.”

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson

Maryland lawmakers have created a bill so free menstrual products are available in schools.

“…requiring a public school to install menstrual hygiene product dispensers in at least two restrooms on or before October 1, 2020, and in all restrooms on or before August 1, 2024; and defining ‘menstrual hygiene products’ as size-appropriate tampons or sanitary napkins for use in connection with the menstrual cycle,” reads the synopsis.

Delegate Kirill Reznik sponsored the bill and said the providing the products in disensers would alleviate the stigma around menstruation.

“When we make students go to the nurse to get menstrual hygiene products, potentially waiting in line behind students with actual medical needs, we cause them to miss more class time,” he wrote to NBC Washington.

He took to Twitter to congradulate Virginia’s Senate for recently passing a similar bill.

“Way to go #Virginia Senate. Hopefully, Maryland is not far behind. #periodequity

According to the State of the Period study, more than 84 percent of students in the United States have missed class time or know someone who has because they did not have access to menstrual products.

New York, California, and Illinois have made similar initiatives to provide mentrual products to students.

Family Of The Man Allegedly Killed By Police Officer Speak Out

Family of man allegedly killed by a Prince George’s County police officer speaks out.

The family of the man allegedly shot by a police officer while handcuffed in the officer’s police cruiser wants a full investigation into their loves ones death. Officer Michael Owen has been charged with murdering William Green Monday night while Green sat handcuffed behind his back and seat-belted.  Green’s daughter spoke today of the impact of her father’s death, saying her father will never walk her down the aisle or see his future grandchildren.  Green had been arrested Monday night for allegedly running into parked cars with his vehicle near Saint Barnabas Road in Temple Hills. The president of the Prince George’s chapter of the NAACP called the County’s District 4 police unit one of the worst in the county for police brutality. The Green family is represented by William “Billy” Murphy. Murphy represented the family of Freddie Gray, the Baltimore man who died in April 2015 after being injured while in police custody.

Shaq Breaks His Silence On The Passing of Kobe Bryant

“I’m not doing well, I’m sick,” Shaq reveals.

Shaquille O’Neal has finally spoken out on the passing of former Los Angeles Laker and NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others.

During his January 26 episode of ‘The Big Podcast with Shaq,’ O’Neal begins by saying “I’m not doing well, I’m sick.” He continued stating that he was just getting over the death of his sister and hadn’t been sleeping or eating. O’Neal says hearing about Bryant’s passing gave him the same effect and he’s been thinking on all the things he could have done differently.

“We still are the best duo ever created. That’s never going to change,” O’Neal said during the podcast. “I have a little brother, but I really lost a brother yesterday.”

O’Neal also said he knows people will bring up past disagreements he had with Bryant but that he was still his brother.

“All this stuff that is documented between us, it was never a dislike. This is what brothers do. … I am the first to say, ‘Hey, I got four rings and I know I couldn’t get three without him.'”

O’Neal’s full interview is available online.

Mayor Muriel Bowser Endorses Mike Bloomberg for President

Bowser says Bloomberg has a plan to improve the quality of life for all Americans.

Contributed by Jordyn Fields

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has announced she is giving her support to presidential candidate and former New York Mayor, Mike Bloomberg.

In a tweet announcing her endorsement, Bowser calls Bloomberg a mentor and friend as well as “the only candidate who will unify the country and defeat Donald Trump…”

Bloomberg who ran as a republican during his campaign for mayor of New York, is currently polling at 8%-10% with voters, which puts him fourth amongst democratic nominees.

During the U.S conference of Mayors Winter Meeting, Bloomberg praised Bowser saying, “She is doing a terrific job, and I hope that someday soon we’ll be calling her ‘Governor Bowser,” A note to his support for D.C statehood.

Bowser’s endorsement of Bloomberg for president isn’t random, the two have interacted before and earlier this year she called him an important voice in the race for president.

According to WAMU, Bowser is set to formally endorse Bloomberg this afternoon at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street NE.

D.C. will hold its primary election on June 2.

PG Corporal Charged With Murder Of Handcuffed Man

WHUR’s News Director Renee Nash is at the Police Headquarters.

Landover, Maryland (Tuesday, January 28th, 2020) – Prince George’s County Police have charged one of their own with murder in the death of a handcuffed man inside a police cruiser.  Chief Hank Stawinski, calling it one of the most difficult days of his career, announced that Corporal Michael Owen is in custody facing second degree murder, manslaughter, and a host of other charges.  Owen is accused of shooting 43-year-old William Green Monday around 7:20pm after he pulled Green over for allegedly striking several vehicles while driving on St. Barnabas Road in Temple Hills.

Chief Stawinski was joined by Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy in making the announcement at police headquarters in Landover.  Stawinki says Green was shot seven times while handcuffed and there was no justifiable reason for the shooting. Corporal Owen has been with the police department for 10 years.  Police records show he was involved in another officer-involved shooting in December 2011.  Owen is in police custody awaiting a bond hearing.

Alsobrooks has ordered Stawinski to direct an independent review of the department’s training practices to make sure an incident like this never happens again.

What To Know For Year Two Of The Trump Tax Plan

Last year’s filing season was an adjustment for taxpayers and industry professionals alike as it was the first under a massive overhaul of federal tax law. While this year’s season is expected to be more sedate, there are a few tweaks to be aware of.

It’s that time again.

The IRS began accepting and processing tax returns for individuals on Monday.

Last year’s filing season was an adjustment for taxpayers and industry professionals alike as it was the first under a massive overhaul of federal tax law. While this year’s season is expected to be more sedate, there are a few tweaks to be aware of.

STANDARD DEDUCTION

The standard deduction doubled under the new tax law that took effect in 2018. In turn, the number of taxpayers who took that instead of itemizing on their taxes jumped sharply. An estimated 90% of taxpayers are expected to take the deduction this year.

While the standard deduction usually increases each year for inflation, it’s worth keeping the figure in mind as taxpayers adjust to the new system. Some people may still want to run through the exercise of deciding whether to itemize or not. The decision comes down to whether your deductible expenses are greater than the standard deduction. Tax preparation software or a tax professional can walk you through this with ease.

Single individuals now get a standard deduction of $12,200 and married individuals filing jointly qualify for a standard deduction of $24,400. Head of household individuals get a standard deduction of $18,350.

HEALTH INSURANCE

New this year: There is no longer a penalty on federal taxes for not having health insurance, something that was put in place by the Affordable Care Act. However, some states may still penalize you for not having health insurance, warns Lisa Greene-Lewis, a CPA and tax expert at TurboTax.

DIVORCE

Anyone who got divorced after 2018 and pays alimony can no longer deduct alimony payments. And ex-spouses who receive alimony are no longer required to claim it as income. Got divorced before 2018? The old rules still apply unless you update your decree to state specifically that the new rules are reflected.

EXTENDERS

Congress recently passed a bill that include a few tax extenders, which renew tax provisions that had expired or were going to expire soon. Here are a handful that you may want to take note of:

— People who are required to pay private mortgage insurance along with their mortgage can once again deduct it. Kathy Pickering, chief tax officer at H&R Block said that this represents a substantial expense for some — in the $2,500 to $4,500 range.

— Another home-related extender: a $500 lifetime credit for making certain energy efficient improvements to your home, such as the purchase of a high efficiency furnace. While many people have already taken advantage of this in years past, Pickering said newer homeowners may want to consider if they can benefit.

— People who suffered a foreclosure and had their debt canceled just got some relief.

The IRS considers that canceled debt as income and therefore subject to taxes. However, there had long been a provision that would waive this if the foreclosure was on a primary residence. Last year, that was not the case.

The waiver has now been reinstated and is extended retroactively, so people who had to pay tax on a canceled debt of this sort can file an amendment. Pickering says this is a provision that impacts few people but “has an extraordinary financial impact.”

— To claim medical expenses on your taxes, the total must exceed a certain percentage of your adjusted gross income. That threshold was set to go up to 10% this year, making it harder for as many people to qualify. But the law extended the prior threshold of 7.5%.

CRYPTOCURRENCY

The IRS has been trying to keep up with the popularity of cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin. Tax experts say it’s a grey area that is slowly being clarified. But for now, cryptocurrency is generally seen as property not currency. So, anyone who trades in it faces the same tax implications as if they were trading stock.

The IRS said it is aware many taxpayers have improperly reported or failed to report transactions in the past. As such, it is increasing its educational efforts and criminal investigations. Additionally, all taxpayers will have to answer a question about their involvement in any virtual currency transactions. If they have received, sold, sent, exchanged or otherwise acquired any virtual currency, they must fill out a new form.

Tax experts say there may still be some confusion but suggest anyone who does trade cryptocurrency should keep close track of all their own activity to make sure they are not stepping on the wrong side of the law.

FREE FILE

The IRS has long offered options for many taxpayers to file online for free, but it may be a bit easier to navigate this year.

Taxpayers can use the IRS Free File system, which is provided by a number of tax preparation companies, if they make less than $69,000 a year.

However, reporting by non-profit news organization ProPublica found that some tax preparation companies had added code to their Free File pages that hid them from search engines and diverted many users to paid products. The IRS has since updated its agreement with the tax prep industry and the companies are barred from hiding their free products.

Additionally, the IRS has tried to help avoid consumer confusion between the IRS Free File system and free or low-cost versions offered by the companies themselves. To make sure you are using the IRS Free File system, go to IRS.gov/freefile to review your choices.

Other options to file for free remain intact. These include those provided by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program or Tax Counseling for the Elderly, offered by AARP, as well as the IRS Free File Fillable forms, which are electronic versions of its paper forms.

Remembering Kobe Bryant

The life and legacy of Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant leaves a legacy of excellence and purpose.  He was a 5 time NBA champion, league MVP and 18-time all-star.  Bryant is 4th all-time on the NBA scoring list.  He is the only Los Angeles Laker to have both of his numbers, 8 & 24, retired by the team.  He entered the league at age 18 and played 20 seasons in the NBA.  Bryant’s legacy does not end there–he was also an Academy Award winner, entrepreneur and youth basketball coach (leading his daughter’s team).  We discuss that and more as we focus on the life and legacy of Kobe Bryant.

Pilot Of Bryant Helicopter Tried To Avoid Heavy Fog

Randy Waldman, a helicopter flight instructor who lives in Los Angeles, said the radar tracking data he’s seen leads him to believe the pilot got confused in the fog and went into a fatal dive.

CALABASAS, Calif. (AP) — A veteran pilot who plunged into a Los Angeles-area hillside, killing Kobe Bryant and eight others, had tried to avoid fog so heavy that it had grounded police choppers, authorities said.

But even experienced pilots may have only seconds to act when they are blinded by weather, an expert said as investigators began scouring the wreckage for clues to Sunday morning’s crash.

The NBA postponed the Los Angeles Lakers’ next game against the Clippers on Tuesday night after the deaths of the retired superstar and the other victims.

Bryant’s death at age 41 was mourned around the world in an outpouring of shocked grief. And while the official investigation into the cause of the crash was just beginning and crews were still working to recover the bodies, experts and armchair pilots alike already were flooding social media and the airwaves with speculation.

One popular theme was the weather. Dense fog had settled along part of the flight path.

The chartered Sikorsky S-76B was a luxury twin-engine aircraft often used by Bryant in traffic-jumping hops around the LA area’s notoriously congested sprawl. It was heading from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Camarillo Airport in Ventura County when it crashed in Calabasas.

Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and the other passengers were heading to Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy, a youth sports center in Thousand Oaks. Bryant was to coach a basketball tournament there in which his daughter was supposed to play.

Also killed were John Altobelli, 56, longtime head coach of Southern California’s Orange Coast College baseball team; his wife, Keri; and daughter, Alyssa, who played on the same basketball team as Bryant’s daughter; and Christina Mauser, a girls’ basketball coach at a Southern California elementary school.

The pilot, Ara Zobayan, was chief pilot for the craft’s owner, Island Express Helicopters. He also was a flight instructor, had more than 8,000 hours of flight time and had flown Bryant and other celebrities several times before, including Kylie Jenner.

“He was such a nice man,” Jenner wrote on Instagram.

Randy Waldman, a helicopter flight instructor who lives in Los Angeles, said the radar tracking data he’s seen leads him to believe the pilot got confused in the fog and went into a fatal dive.

The aircraft’s speed “means he was completely out of control and in a dive,” Waldman said.

“Once you get disoriented your body senses completely tell you the wrong thing. You have no idea which way is up or down,” he said.

“If you’re flying visually, if you get caught in a situation where you can’t see out the windshield, the life expectancy of the pilot and the aircraft is maybe 10, 15 seconds,” Waldman said.

Some experts raised questions of whether the helicopter should have even been flying. The weather was so foggy that the Los Angeles Police Department and the county sheriff’s department had grounded their own choppers.

“He could have turned around and gone back to a safer place with better visibility,” Waldman said.

However, “a lot of times somebody who’s doing it for a living is pressured to get their client to where they have to go,” Waldman said. “They take chances that maybe they shouldn’t take.”

The helicopter was flying around Burbank, just north of Los Angeles, when the pilot received air traffic control permission to use special visual flight rules, allowing the helicopter to fly in less-than-optimal visibility and weather conditions.

Zobayan was told to follow a freeway and stay at or below 2,500 feet (762 meters), according to radio traffic. The pilot didn’t seem overly concerned although at one point, he asks air traffic controllers to provide “flight following” guidance but is told the helicopter is too low for that radar assistance.

About four minutes later, “the pilot advised they were climbing to avoid a cloud layer,” Jennifer Homendy of the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday.

It was his last message to air traffic controllers.

“When ATC asked what the pilot planned to do, there was no reply,” Homendy said. “Radar data indicates the helicopter climbed to 2,300 feet (701 meters) and then began a left descending turn.”

Two minutes later, someone on the ground called 911 to report the crash. The helicopter had slammed into a hillside and burst into flames.

Details of what followed are still under investigation but there are indications that the helicopter plunged some 1,000 feet (305 meters). It was flying at about 184 mph (296 kph) and descending at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute when it struck the ground, according to data from Flightradar24.

The helicopter’s rapid climb and fast descent suggest the pilot was disoriented, said Jerry Kidrick, a retired Army colonel who flew helicopters in Iraq and now teaches at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona.

Disoriented pilots must instantly switch from visual cues to flying the aircraft using only the machine’s instruments, he said.

“It’s one of the most dangerous conditions you can be in,” Kidrick said. “Oftentimes, your body is telling you something different than what the instruments are telling you.”

On Monday, NTSB investigators scoured the area to collect evidence and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies on horseback patrolled the brushy Calabasas hillside. Homendy said the NTSB expected to be on the scene for five days.

“It was a pretty devastating accident scene,” she said of the widespread wreckage. “A piece of the tail is down the hill. The fuselage is on the other side of that hill. And then the main rotor is about 100 yards (91 meters) beyond that.”

Homendy urged people with photographs of weather in the area at the time of the crash to send them to the NTSB. However, she said investigating teams would look at everything, from the pilot’s history and actions to the state of the helicopter and its engines.

“We look at man, machine and the environment,” she said. “And weather is just a small portion of that.”

DC Police To No Longer Handcuff Pre-Teens

Youth 12 and under will no longer be handcuffed when being detained by DC police.

DC police officers will no longer handcuff children under 12 years of age, except in situations deemed dangerous to the child or the public.  District police faced heavy criticism after video showed them last April chasing and handcuffing a 9-year-old boy who was later determined to have committed no crime. Weeks earlier police cuffed a 10-year-old boy who DC attorney general Karl Racine called “totally innocent.”   The police department worked with DC’s Office of the Attorney General on the new policy, which was announced today.
