‘Obamacare’ survives: Supreme Court dismisses big challenge

The court ruled 7-to-2 that Texas, other Republican-led states and two individuals had no right to bring their lawsuit in federal court.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has dismissed a third major challenge to “Obamacare,” preserving health insurance coverage for millions of Americans. Though the court has become increasingly conservative with justices nominated by former President Donald Trump, it nonetheless left the entire law intact Thursday. The court ruled 7-to-2 that Texas, other Republican-led states and two individuals had no right to bring their lawsuit in federal court. The law’s major provisions include protections for people with preexisting health conditions, a range of no-cost preventive services and the expansion of the Medicaid program that insures lower-income people, including those who work in jobs that don’t pay much or provide health insurance.

Paris Jackson Opens Up To Willow Smith About Suicide Attempts, Coming Out To Family

Paris Jackson, Michael Jackson’s daughter, opened up to Willow Smith for her Red Table Podcast about past suicide attempts.

“A lot of people do feel regret when they try and attempt suicide, like a last-minute regret,” Jackson said. “There have been times where I did and times where I didn’t, where I was upset that it didn’t work.”

Jackson went on to say she’s glad her attempts at suicide never worked and she’s currently in a better place. Her past anxiety and paranoia were a result of her father’s super-stardom and the paparazzi who would intrude on their lives.

“I’ll hear a trash bag rustling and flinch in panic. I think it’s standard PTSD,” said Paris. She also says the lack of support from her family after coming out made her not feel “accepted.”

“My family is very religious and a lot of homosexuality is very taboo, so they don’t like to talk about it, it’s not really accepted.”

Do you struggle to feel accepted in your family?

Biden To Sign Bill Making Juneteenth A Federal Holiday

By KEVIN FREKING Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States will soon have a new federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery. President Joe Biden is scheduled to sign into law on Thursday a bill to make Juneteenth, or June 19th, the 12th federal holiday. The House approved the bill 415-14 on Wednesday. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas — two months after the Confederacy had surrendered. That was also about 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the Southern states. It’s the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created in 1983.

Lena Waithe Teams Up With Def Jam To Launch Hillman Grad Records

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb
Filmmaker Leana Waithe is showing her versatility by taking her talents to the music industry. Teaming up with Def Jam Records, she plans to launch Hillman Grad Records.

Waithe told Rollingstone ““As I got older and more into my career, I think people really started to pick up on the music choices in the film or TV that I was doing, and that really spoke to me.”

With musical inspirations of Prince, Erkyah Badu, and Brandy, she appears to have a love and respect for the 90s sound.

She plans on promoting artist storytelling and wants to promote the personality and growth of the artist over just releasing tons of albums as the Jasmine Brand reported.

“I don’t want to do the typical thing. We are not going to come out with 10 albums a year. It’s about finding really interesting artists who have a real drive and sense of wanting to figure out who they are over time. We really want artists that can grow. Yes, it includes albums and singles, but to me it’s about personality and moments.”

While no artists are signed yet, artist such as H.E.R., Miguel, Lil Nas X, Summer Walker, and Jazmine Sullivan.

She wants each album to show growth or a reflection of where the artist are in their life.

“I think there is this desire to have artists do the same thing again and again. I really miss watching an artist and their albums shift and change with each one. But I want to bring back some of that old vibe and nostalgia and rollout of actual singles.”

‘In The Heights’ Creator Apologizes For Film’s Lack Of Dark-Skinned Afro-Latinx Actors

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb
Lin-Manuel Miranda, following criticism of lack of African Latino representation, took to twitter to apologize.

“In The Heights,” written by Miranda, initially opened on Broadway in 2008. The highly anticipated film adaptation was released in theaters and on HBO Max last week reported BET.

The plot is about life in Washington Heights, Manhattan as an Afro-Latino. The film sheds light on daily problems, feeling like you don’t belong, and being the first in the family to accomplish certain goals. Music is used to help capture the emotions involved.

The Jon M. Chu-directed film faced criticism after the noticeable lack of dark-skinned Afro-Latinx actors. On Monday (June 14), Miranda issued a statement.

“I’m seeing the discussion around Afro-Latinx representation in our film this weekend and it is clear that many of our dark-skinned Afro-Latinx community don’t feel sufficiently represented in it,” Miranda said in a statement. “I can hear the hurt and frustration over colorism, of feeling unseen in the feedback.”

Critics feel none of the main characters are of darker complexion.

“I needed to be educated about that, about not fully understanding the existence of dark-skinned Latino folks like Afro-Panamanians, Black Cubans and Black Dominicans, for example, ” he mentioned in an interview with The Root.

This will hopefully be used as a learning experience for future castings.

Kevin Hart Claps Back At Bill Maher

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb
Not everyone believes “White Privilege” is a real thing, this past weekend Bill Maher chimed in on that ideology.

BET reported that “part of Maher’s rant specifically targeted Kevin Hart, who, during an interview with the New York Times, said in regards to police brutality, “You’re witnessing white power and privilege at an all-time high.””

“This is one of the big problems with wokeness, that what you say doesn’t have to make sense or chime with the facts or ever be challenged, lest the challenge itself be conflated with racism,” Maher said during the segment.

He added: “But saying white power and privilege is at an all-time high is just ridiculous. Higher than a century ago, the year of the Tulsa Race Massacre? Higher than the years when the KKK rode unchecked, and the KKK went unchallenged? Higher than the 1960s when the Supremes and The Willie Mays still couldn’t stay in the same hotel as the white people they were working with? Higher than during slavery?”

After these statements Kevin Hart did not take back his claims of white privilege being prevalent. In a series of post from Hart BET reported:

“The internet has put a magnifying glass on how dominant racism still is in our country….to ignore that @billmaher is ridiculous…To take my quote literally is also ridiculous…. u are witnessing the same craziness that I am…,” he wrote.

He added in another tweet: “When I speak of white privilege I’m speaking of moments that make no sense. For example ‘The storming of the capital’ ….if they were black they would have been killed on the spot….” In another post, he added, “I am speaking on Karen’s that now feel like they can say and do whatever they want without any consequences…. to act as if white privilege does not exist is just stupid when it is as clear as day.”

“So if you choose to highlight a quote of mine please try and understand the why behind it. Once again….I’m not a political figure and I have no desire to be one….When I’m asked a question I’m going to give an answer based on what I think and feel. Good day,” he continued. “Lastly….. message to all. An opinion is just that….it’s an “Opinion”….everyone is entitled to have one. If you disagree that’s fine….Now go have a great Sunday ….Live love & laugh,” he concluded.

While race and privilege is always a touchy subject, with the help of social media and the internet we are able to see in real time the unjust doings in our country.

Justices Rule Against Low-Level Crack Cocaine Offenders

Crack cocaine offenders convicted more than a decade ago can’t take advantage of a 2018 federal law to seek reduced prison time.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that low-level crack cocaine offenders convicted more than a decade ago can’t take advantage of a 2018 federal law to seek reduced prison time. The justices affirmed the nearly 16-year prison term handed out to Tarahrick Terry of Florida, who was arrested with 3.9 grams of crack on him in 2008. Terry’s case concerned the reach of the First Step Act, a bipartisan 2018 law signed by former President Donald Trump. It allows prisoners convicted of older crack crimes to seek reduced sentences. But the law specifically addresses crack possession only above 5 grams for one category of possession and above 50 grams for another category. It left convicts like Terry in a sort of legal limbo.

Black Woman Poised for 2nd Highest US Court

Senators on Monday are expected to elevate Ketanji Brown Jackson to the nation’s second most powerful court, the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. She has written nearly 600 opinions as a district judge in Washington and worked as a public defender. Democrats say her confirmation is just the start of their efforts to add more diversity to the courts. The nation’s first federal Muslim judge was confirmed last week.

Contributed by Scott Lipscomb

Pharell Williams does a little bit of everything. His latest endeavor, opening private schools for low income families in his home state of Virginia.

“If the system is fixed and unfair, then it needs to be broken,” Williams said in a news release. “We don’t want lockstep learning where so many kids fall behind; we want bespoke learning designed for each child, where the things that make a child different are the same things that will make a child rise up and take flight.”

The first school will be in the Norfolk area for grades 3 through 5.

The Virginian Pilot reported “Called Yellowhab, yellow after Williams’ nonprofit and “hab” after the name of the Mars habitat in the movie “The Martian,” the school will be tuition-free for at least the first year. The costs of attendance will be covered by philanthropic support.”

“Williams’ nonprofit has offered summer programs and other educational opportunities throughout Hampton Roads for years, but settled on Norfolk for the site of the first school because of its deeply entrenched housing segregation and the city’s plans to redevelop three public housing communities through its billion-dollar St. Paul’s redevelopment.”

These schools not only are meant to give these children a top notch education but also a safe space for them to explore their interests and discover a love for learning.

Joe Biden To Name Pulse Nightclub National Memorial

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb

June 2016 saw one of the deadliest shootings in the United States Of America. Killing 49 people, the highest amount by a single gunman, and the largest attack on the LBGTQ community, the Pulse Nightclub shooting was horrific.

President Joe Biden announced his plans to make the Pulse Nightclub a national memorial, which he says the bill was unanimously passed by the House and Senate.

In a statement he released he said “We must also acknowledge gun violence’s particular impact on LGBTQ+ communities across our nation. We must drive out hate and inequities that contribute to the epidemic of violence and murder against transgender women – especially transgender women of color. We must create a world in which our LGBTQ+ young people are loved, accepted, and feel safe in living their truth. And the Senate must swiftly pass the Equality Act, legislation that will ensure LGBTQ+ Americans finally have equal protection under law.

In the memory of all of those lost at the Pulse nightclub five years ago, let us continue the work to be a nation at our best – one that recognizes and protects the dignity and safety of every American.”

While making this a national memorial, he also hopes to make stricter gun laws so these domestic terrorism acts no longer happen.
