Taraji P. Henson Set To Star in ‘Annie Live’

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb
It’s a hard knock life for some people, but this winter that changes. DMV native Taraji P. Henson is set to star in NBC’s holiday production of Annie.

The Academy Award nominated actor will play Miss Hanigan, the orphanage owner who dislikes kids and seems to have it out for Annie. While the search for the star orphan is still going, you can expect Henson to give an amazing show.

“Carol Burnett, who brought Miss Hannigan to life in the classic 1982 movie, is someone I have studied and idolized as far back as I can remember,” Henson said. “So when the opportunity came to me to join NBC and this incredible group of producers, I jumped! Carol, I hope to make you proud!” the Variety Reported.

Henson is a Howard University alumni and an award winning actress. Some of her awards include a Golden Globe, SAG Award, Critic’s Choice Award, as well as being a best selling author and on TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People In the World.

After 7 Keeps It Old School In A New School Environment

If you like Bittersweet, you’re gonna Love our new album, Unfinished Business!”

https://youtu.be/6IXYU3QClTw

When I think about why I’m such a huge fan of After 7, there are so many reasons. They sound amazing, and they give their all. In short, those brothers can really sing.

We talked about their approach to performing. Kevon said they grew up studying the masters. Just singing wasn’t enough. Back in the day, artists had to sing, dance, and style was very important. It was so cool to hear the admiration and reverence they all still have for their craft. Triple threats… All of them. After 7 is the real deal, and they’re showing no signs of stopping any time soon.

They talked about their new single, Bittersweet and said to look out for their new album, “Unfinished Business!” I can hardly wait!

Critical Race Theory

Why is it so controversial?

The Florida Board of Education has banned the teaching of Critical Race Theory.  Governor Ron desantis opened the meeting saying we need to educate kids about historical facts, and he stresses slavery, civil rights and the holocaust are already taught in our schools.  CRT gained a lot of steam following the publication of the New York Times “1619 project.”  It argued the institution of slavery was the nation’s true founding and the American Revolution was fought in part to secure slavery.  This debate continues across the country including in Loudoun County, Virginia where some parents are also pushing back.

Florida Bans “Critical Race Theory” From Its Classrooms

A national debate is intensifying over how the role of race and racism should be examined in classroom history discussions.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida has become the latest state to ban “critical race theory” from its public schools. The state Board of Education adopted new rules Thursday to shield schoolchildren from curricula that it says could “distort historical events.” The action was widely expected since Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed many of the board’s members. A national debate is intensifying over how the role of race and racism should be examined in classroom history discussions. Critics say a national effort by conservatives to decide what can be taught in schools risks politicizing essential education.

Changes for R. Kelly Defense Strategy

R. Kelly seeks to shake up defense team ahead of NYC trial

NEW YORK (AP) — The jailed R&B singer R. Kelly wants to shake up his defense team just two months before he is set to go on trial in New York on federal racketeering charges. Attorneys Steve Greenberg and Michael Leonard of Chicago told a judge this week it would “impossible” for them to continue representing the Grammy Award-winning artist given the legal wrangling among Kelly’s defense team. The judge did not immediately grant the motion. Kelly, who is 54, is set to go on trial Aug. 9 in Brooklyn on federal racketeering charges. He has denied ever abusing anyone.

Cicadas Even Take On President Biden

So much for Secret Service agents when cicadas are targeting the President of the United States.

Washington, D.C. (Thursday, June 10, 2021) – Just about everyone has had to duck, dodge, swat, and even run in recent weeks from the pesky Cicadas.  President Joe Biden is no exception.  A Brood X Cicada landed on the president’s shirt collar Wednesday as he was preparing to board a flight to Europe from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

“Watch out for the cicadas.  I just got one, it got me,” Biden said to reporters on the tarmac.  Not even Biden’s team of secret service agents could guard him from one of the billions of cicadas.

On Tuesday, the insects caused the grounding of the airplane set to carry the White House press corps on their scheduled trip to Europe.

All across the DMV you will see people running, diving, dodging, and doing all kinds of moves to get beyond the bugs that invade above ground every 17 years.  Experts say they do not bite or sting and are essentially harmless.  But for some that knowledge is no help in quelling their fear of the beady eyed insects.

Haiti Seeing COVID Cases Rise While Waiting for 1st Vaccine Doses

Haiti has yet to administer any COVID vaccines. The Caribbean island nation has seen cases surge beyond 16k while officials await vaccine shipments.

(Thursday, June 10, 2021) – As many other countries were ravaged by COVID-19 last year, Haiti suffered only a mild outbreak of the virus.  That has apparently changed now for the Caribbean island nation.  Health officials say new cases are now surging in Haiti, the poorest country in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

The Pan American Health Organization says more virulent variants have taken hold in recent weeks, leading to sharply escalating cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Haiti is reporting more than 16,000 cases and 350 fatalities.

Haiti has yet to administer any COVID vaccines.  Haiti reportedly initially rejected shipments of vaccine doses through the United Nations-back Covax initiative because of possible side effects and worry about proper vaccine storage.  The island nation is now expected to get its first shipment of 130,000 doses next week.

But doctors reportedly say the challenge will be convincing Haitians to actually take the shot.

FDA Approves First Weight Loss Drug Since 2014

It’s an injectable drug called Wegovy and it’s manufactured by a Danish pharmaceutical company.

(Denmark) — There’s a new weapon in the war against obesity, the first since 2014. It’s an injectable drug called Wegovy [[ We-go-vee ]] and it’s manufactured by a Danish pharmaceutical company. The FDA has approved the drug for people who are overweight or obese and have at least one weight-related medical condition. Patients on Wegovy lost an average of 17-percent of their body weight in a 16-month study. Weight management experts are excited about the drug, saying it’s time to think about obesity, the same way we think about hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Senate Report Hits Massive Security Failures Around Capitol Attack

(Washington, DC) — A new report outlines massive security failures during the January 6th attack on the Capitol. The bipartisan report from two Senate committees notes a total failure of leadership by commanders of the Capitol Police, along with a lack of proper preparation. Federal intelligence officials are also criticized for failing to adequately warn Capitol Police about a potential for violence on January 6th. An angry mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol after easily breaching police security lines.

The Capitol attack followed a massive rally that now-former President Trump held near the White House. The assault occurred on the day the House and Senate were meeting to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election. That process was completed after hours of chaos at the Capitol. The Capitol Police chief and the sergeants-at-arms of the House and Senate were forced to resign after the assault.

McConnell Deems John Lewis Voting Rights Bill ‘Unnecessary’

The Kentucky Republican explained his opposition as he said using race to discriminate in voting is illegal already.

(Washington, DC) — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says a voting rights bill pushed by House Democrats isn’t needed. He told reporters the John Lewis voting rights bill is “unnecessary.” The Kentucky Republican explained his opposition as he said using race to discriminate in voting is illegal already. Lewis was a civil and voting rights advocate throughout his career.

McConnell’s comments came just hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote a letter to her colleagues about the measure. She said it was “essential” to get the proposal named after the former Georgia Congressman passed. However, the California Democrat admitted “it will not be ready until the fall.”

Tiffany Haddish Set To Star As Flo-Jo in New Biopic

Contributed by Scott Lipscomb

Whether it’s making us laugh, or playing a track super star, Tiffany Haddish can do it all. A Grammy Award winning actress, Haddish’s next role is in a biopic of the legendary track star Florence Joyner or better known as “Flo-Jo.”

Deadline first reported that Haddish will star as Flo-Jo as well as help produce the biopic and podcast with game1.

“Flo-Jo was an elite track and field athlete in the 1980s and was named the fastest woman in the world after setting sprint records in the 100m and 200m races at the 1988 Summer Olympics. After retiring from sports a year after her record-breaking wins, Flo-Jo died at 38 after suffering an epileptic seizure.” said BET in a statement about the upcoming biopic.

“I am looking forward to telling Flo-Jo’s story the way it should be told,” said Haddish. “My goal with this film is making sure that younger generations know my ‘she-ro’ Flo-Jo, the fastest woman in the world to this day, existed.” said Haddish when asked about the biopic.

While a release date is unknown, you can expect Haddish to do an amazing job as she has shown in the past of her award winning acting career.

Simone Biles Wins Record Setting 7th National Title

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb
“Black Girl Magic” is one of the many phrases used to describe Simone Biles. The gymnast just won a record setting 7th national title.

The 4 time Olympic gold medalist made it look easy at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships this past weekend. Biles had a score of 119.650 which was almost 5 points higher than runner-up Sunisa Lee. At 24 years old it is almost surreal to see how fast Biles is smashing records.

“I feel like I did try to enjoy it because it could be one of my last championships that I’ll attend,” Biles said after her latest brush with history. “But it’s also the road to Tokyo, and after this we have trials, so we just have to really embrace the moment.” reported the Root.

Wearing a goat emblem on her leotard that is for the acronym “Greatest of All Time”, Biles hasn’t lost an all around competition since 2013. She is one of if not the most dominant gymnast ever.

So Dominant that she even has created her own tricks and conquered existing “impossible” moves.

This competition was just another pit stoop for her as she prepares for the Olympics later this summer.

“I feel like every single championship stands out for a different reason, but this one stands out specifically because it’s the road to Tokyo,” Biles said. “We came out here, and we did what we were supposed to.”

Controversial Dementia Drug Gets FDA Nod

FDA approves much-debated Alzheimer’s drug panned by experts

WASHINGTON (AP) — Government health officials have approved the first drug that they say may help slow Alzheimer’s disease. The decision came after the agency’s independent advisers said the treatment hadn’t been shown to help treat the brain-destroying disease. The Food and Drug Administration is not required to follow the advisers’ advice and approved the infused drug from Biogen. It’s the first new Alzheimer’s treatment in nearly 20 years and the only one that FDA has backed to treat the underlying disease, rather than manage symptoms. One physician who voted against the drug says he is surprised and disappointed by the approval.

NFL Promises to Stop ‘Race Norming’ Black Players

NFL officials on Wednesday vowed to end the practice of “race norming” when settling concussion lawsuits with Black players.
The promise to end the tactic, which asserts Black players have lower cognitive functions than White players, came as the result of a civil rights lawsuit filed by a coalition of Black players.
“Race norming” refers to the practice of assuming Black players have worse cognitive functions than White players do. Because of this, Black players suffering from brain damage have been denied awards because their mental bars were initially set lower, attorneys say. “The replacement norms will be applied prospectively and retrospectively for those players who otherwise would have qualified for an award but for the application of race-based norms,” says NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.
Are you surprised this practice didn’t come to light much sooner than this? Will racism always exist in this world?

Serena Williams Shows Support For Naomi Osaka

Serena Williams is one of many stars coming forward to support Naomi Osaka after she withdrew from the French Open.
She said, “The only thing I feel is that I feel for Naomi. I feel like I wish I could give her a hug because I know what it’s like.”
She added, “Not everyone is the same. I’m thick. Other people are thin. Everyone is different, and everyone handles things differently. You just have to let her handle it the way she wants to and the best way she thinks she can. That’s the only thing I can say. I think she is doing the best she can.”
Do you agree with Serena? Do you think Naomi will make a comeback?

Prosecutors Seek 30-Year Sentence for Chauvin

Prosecutors are asking for a 30-year prison sentence for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd.
The prosecution said today that the sentence would “properly account for the profound impact” of Chauvin’s actions on Floyd’s family and the community.
An attorney for Chauvin says he should get probation and time served considering his age, lack of criminal history, cooperation in the investigation, and attitude in court.
He also described Chauvin’s actions as an error in his experience as an officer.
What do you think Derek Chauvin’s sentence should be?

Swizz Beatz Teases DMX Gospel Album

Swizz Beatz says there is enough music for the release of a DMX Gospel album. The Ruff Ryders producer and friend of the late Yonkers rapper announced that there was more to come from DMX during an Exodus listening event.

“That was like his dream dream dream. We gotta try to make that happen,” said Swizz. “That’s where he wanted to end up. He wanted to end up in the spiritual zone with his music.”

What do you think of a DMX Gospel album? Do you think DMX would’ve taken the Kanye route if he was still alive?

Black Twitter Reacts To Jay-Z Calling Kardashian ‘Queen Of Come Up’

Black Twitter took aim at JAY-Z’s latest verse on DMX’s “Bath Salts” song. The song also features Nas and is a track from DMX’s posthumous album, Exodus.

Referring to the line, “I’m the King of Zamunda, uh, King of the Summer/ Come be my Kardashian, Queen of the Come Up,” fans took offense to the line, especially members of the Beyhive.

“Jay Z on DMX’s Bath Salts track: come be my Kardashian queen of the come up…Solange is waiting in the elevator my guy (round 2 fight) #DMX,” tweeted one fan.

Many people felt the line was lackluster and Nas “ate Jay” on the song. Other fans said the line was “shade” toward the “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star as JAY-Z was calling the Kardashian clan opportunists with the verse.

What do you think of JAY-Z’s verse on Exodus?

‘I’m Unapologetic’: Mo’Nique Hits Back at Backlash Over Bonnet Comments

Mo’Nique set off a debate in the Black community after she called out women who wore bonnets, slippers, robes, scarves, and blankets wrapped around them in the Atlanta airport.

The “Queen of Comedy” asked that women “honor their beauty” by not dressing like they just woke up in public. She doubled down on her words three days after her initial video.

Mo’Nique says she is “okay with you being in your feelings” about her words and doesn’t understand why women would want to “block your beauty.”

“So I am unapologetic about what I said because I said it with nothing but love and I said it with no judgment,” said Mo’Nique. “For the sisters that got it, I’m glad. For the ones that didn’t, I’ll wait.”

Critics on social media called Mo’Nique’s comments a “generational thing” with the older generation thinking respect comes from looking a certain way, while Millenials believe respect should be had no matter what you’re wearing, which philosophy do you agree with?
