“The new law will give us an opportunity to take a photo and mail it to the resident—even if they drive off before we can give it to them—and, hopefully, change the behavior.”
Beginning February 28, the D.C. Department of Public Works will begin issuing tickets to any driver seen “improperly parking, stopping or leaving a bike lane.”
The bike lane enforcement program is a part of the “DC Vision Zero” law enforcement program to reduce the number of traffic-related deaths and serious injuries in The District to zero by 2024.
In November, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced she was increasing the number of Parking Enforcement Officials (PEOs) to enhance bike lane safety. Since then, 26 new PEOs were added to the existing 272. In each area, there is at least one person dedicated to monitoring the bike lanes.
“In building safer bike lanes we can keep our roads and sidewalks safe for all who use them, encourage residents and visitors to explore alternate modes of transportation, and work toward our Vision Zero goals,” she said in a statement.
The PEOs will photograph vehicles blocking bike lanes and mail citations to the vehicle owners if the ticket is not presented to the owner in person.
“The new law will give us an opportunity to take a photo and mail it to the resident—even if they drive off before we can give it to them—and, hopefully, change the behavior,” said DPW Director Chris Geldart in the same statement.

Vanessa Bryant Posts About Struggling To Cope

“When a Chinese billionaire re-opens a factory and hires two thousand blue-collar Americans, early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.”
Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama‘s production company, Higher Ground, won its first Academy Award.
Their Netflix documentary, “American Factory,” won the award for best documentary at the Oscars. Netflix’s description reads:
“When a Chinese billionaire re-opens a factory and hires two thousand blue-collar Americans, early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.”
The couple did not attend the ceremony but sent their congratulations to the filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, who accepted the award, via Twitter.
“So glad to see their heart and honesty recognized—because the best stories are rarely tidy or perfect. But that’s where the truth so often lies,” said Michelle Obama.
Congrats to Julia, Steven, and the whole crew on winning Best Documentary for #AmericanFactory, Higher Ground’s first release! So glad to see their heart and honesty recognized—because the best stories are rarely tidy or perfect. But that’s where the truth so often lies. https://t.co/qtdNEw9H3f

Deandre and his mom were the “official guests of the Oscar-nominated team” behind “Hair Love.”
One of the most touching wins of this year’s Oscars went to “Hair Love,” a short film about a the love between a father and daughter showcased through caring for her hair. The film took home the award for Best Animated Short Film.
The short film by Director Matthew A. Cherry, was released by Sony Pictures Animation in last December. Some of the producers include Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwayne Wade and Jordan Peele, and features Issa Rae.
Cherry was joined on the red carpet by Deandre Arnold, a high school student from Texas that was told he could not attend his graduation unless he cut off his dreadlocks. because they violated school dress codes.

Arnold’s story stirred national outrage and prompted action against hair discrimination. Celebrities rounded up support for the teenager. He appeared on an episode of “The Ellen Show” where host Ellen DeGeneres and musician Alicia Keys presented him with a $20,000 for his college tuition.
Gabrielle Union-Wade and Dwayne Wade two of the “Hair Love” producers invited Arnold and his mom to be “the official guests of the Oscar-nominated team” and walk the red carpet with the director on “CBS this Morning.”

#IStandWithGayle trends after many women of color stand up for King’s integrity as a journalist.
Gayle King has been receiving backlash ever since her interview with Lisa Leslie where she questioned the details surrounding the rape case that was brought against Kobe Bryant in 2003.
King’s longtime friend, Oprah Winfrey said King “is not doing well” and has received death threats following the interview going viral.
People have taken to social media to share their support for King with the hashtag, #IStandWithGayle.

Tensions rose between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Trump today.
From Snoop Dogg to Vivica Fox, people are outraged with how Gayle King spoke on the late Kobe Bryant.
CBS This Morning host, Gayle King, interviewed former WNBA star Lisa Leslie on the passing of Kobe Bryant. During the interview King brought up the subject of the rape case that was brought against Bryant in 2003.
.@WNBA legend @LisaLeslie told @GayleKing that Kobe Bryant's legacy is "not complicated" for her despite his 2003 rape accusation.

King asked question’s such as ” It’s been said that his legacy is complicated, because of a sexual assault charge that was dismissed in 2003, 2004. Is it complicated for you, as a woman, as a WNBA player?”
Leslie who was a close friend of Bryant’s denied any wrong doing on Bryant’s part, stating, “It’s not complicated for me at all … I just never see — have ever seen him being the kind of person that would be — do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That’s just not the person that I know.”
When the clip of the video was released online, supporters of the late Bryant were outraged with King for trying to “tarnish” the former NBA legend’s name. Snoop Dogg, Boosie BadAzz and Vivica Fox notably spoke out against the reporter.
King responded to the backlash this morning in a Twitter video. She stated she hadn’t even seen the clip until people started commenting on it. She also expressed her anger with CBS for taking the clip out of context.

“I’ve been up reading the comments about the interview I did with Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant,” said King. “And I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw, I’d be extremely angry with me too. I am mortified. I am embarrassed and I am very angry. Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview — totally taken out of context — and when you see it that way, it’s very jarring. It’s jarring to me. I didn’t even know anything about it.”
King says she too had a friendly relationship with Bryant and no disrespect was intended by the interview.
