Prince George’s County Police have arrested the man suspected of a deadly stabbing at a Popeyes restaurant in Oxon Hill.  30-year-old Ricoh McClain was tracked down at a home on Nova Avenue in Capitol Heights. Police believe McClain was the acquaintance of a person staying at that residence.

He is accused of killing 28-year-old Kevin Tyrell Davis in the restaurant parking lot on November 4th.  McClain is charged with first degree murder, 2nd degree murder, 1st degree assault, 2nd degree assault, and reckless endangerment. He’s being held on a no-bond status.

The preliminary investigation reveals McClain and the victim got into a brief verbal argument after the victim cut in front of several customers waiting to order food. They both then got out of the line, walked out of the front door together and McClain immediately stabbed Davis. McClain then fled from the area.

Analysis Of The First Public Impeachment Hearing

Political panel examines the first public hearing on the impeachment of President Trump

The first public hearing in the House impeachment inquiry is underway. The House Intelligence Committee has taken the lead in the ongoing impeachment investigation of President Trump. The key question involves whether the President and his administration pushed Ukraine to investigate Democrats in return for military aid and a coveted White House meeting between Trump and Ukraine’s president.  We examine the first day’s hearing, what it means, why it’s important and we ask if you care about the issue.

To Impeach or Not To Impeach

Donald Trump’s impeachment investigation, the extraordinary process to determine whether the 45th president of the United States should be removed from office.

The U.S. House launched the first public hearing Wednesday of Donald Trump’s impeachment investigation, the extraordinary process to determine whether the 45th president of the United States should be removed from office. Our favorite White House Correspondent April Ryan will breakdown everything we need to know about what’s going on in the White House Report.

Survey About Reproductive Rights On Birth Control Day

Poll Shows Most Americans Overwhelmingly Support Reproductive Health Options

(Washington, DC) — Despite recent legislative attacks on abortion, a new survey shows that 86-percent of Americans overwhelmingly support a wide range of reproductive services, including abortion. Ginny Ehrlich of the non-profit group Power To Decide says the poll shows that holds true across political lines. She also says the closing of abortion clinics, particularly in southern states, puts low-income women at a particular disadvantage with many having to decide whether to drive hundreds of miles to end an unwanted pregnancy. Ehrlich says since 1972, when the U.S. Supreme Court made birth control legal for all women, the number of women who’ve achieved at least a bachelor’s degree has quadrupled and there’s been a 30-percent wage increase for women. The survey is being released in conjunction with Thanks, Birth Control Day which is today.

GOP Defense In Impeachment: Nothing Bad Actually Happened

House Republicans go on the offense during impeachment hearings.

(Washington, DC) — Nothing bad actually happened. That’s a big part of the Republican argument against the impeachment of President Trump. In the first House impeachment hearing, Ohio Republican Jim Jordan said Ukraine did not investigate Democrats and noted that Ukraine eventually got nearly 400-million dollars in planned U.S. military aid. Democrats argue that the Trump administration pressured Ukraine to launch an investigation of Democrats while aid was being delayed. Utah Republican Chris Stewart said the case against Trump is weak and is propped up by “zero evidence.”

Stewart insisted that much of the apparent evidence against the President is based on hearsay. California Republican Devin Nunes accused Democrats of using witnesses to invent a narrative to support impeachment. He also said Dems are making things up. Nunes appeared to try to substantiate President Trump’s claim that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election, not Russia. In earlier remarks, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent said it’s clear to him that Russia interfered in the 2016 campaign.

Meantime, Kent and acting U.S.-Ukraine Ambassador Bill Taylor said they have no knowledge of Hunter Biden’s business activities in Ukraine. Biden is the son of former VP Joe Biden. Trump has called the Bidens corrupt, though no evidence of wrongdoing has emerged.

Colin Kaepernick Invited To Private Workout For NFL Teams

Kaepernick posted, “I’m just getting word from my representatives that the NFL league office reached out to them about a workout in Atlanta on Saturday. I’ve been in shape and ready for this for 3 years, can’t wait to see the head coaches and GMs on Saturday.”

Contributed by Amber Cooper

On Tuesday, Colin Kaepernick took to Twitter to announce that he would be attending a workout session hosted by the NFL.

Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, plans on attending the private training session after years of disagreement with the NFL. Kaepernick posted, “I’m just getting word from my representatives that the NFL league office reached out to them about a workout in Atlanta on Saturday. I’ve been in shape and ready for this for 3 years, can’t wait to see the head coaches and GMs on Saturday.”

After Kaepernick made a public display of him kneeling during the national anthem, which caused much controversy, he has not been signed by an NFL team since 2016. According to NBC News, “He was statistically ahead of several highly paid quarterbacks still in the league today — such as Philip Rivers, Eli Manning and Joe Flacco.”

Although Kaepernick hasn’t played professionally, he remains consistent with his 5 a.m. morning workouts everyday. He has also remained active in the community and vocal about his fight for social justice. Last September, he was the face of a marketing campaign by Nike that advertised, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

Kaepernick recently celebrated his 32nd birthday by feeding the homeless in Oakland.

John Legend Named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive

Legend is currently a coach on the hit-show, ‘The Voice,’ and just released the new deluxe edition of his holiday album A Legendary Christmas.

The magazine officially announced that John Legend will hold the title as the 2019 “Sexiest Man Alive.”

Last year, this honor was given to Idris Elba and Legend took to Twitter to share the news saying, “1995 John would be very perplexed to be following 2018 @IdrisElba as #sexiestman alive. Hell, 2019 John is about as equally perplexed but thank you @People for finding me sexy. I’ll take it.”

Legend is a well known decorated artist in the industry. He is one of only fifteen people in the world to have won an EGOT that includes an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony award. CNN also reports that he is “the first African-American man to win all four.”

In an article from PEOPLE.com, Legend admits that he used to be socially awkward. He goes on to say, “I think you grow into being comfortable in your own skin, most of your teenage years, into your 20s, you’re still figuring out who you are, how you present yourself to the world…eventually I think you get more at ease with yourself. I know who I am. Maturity helps with that.”

Dems, GOP Argue Over Whistleblower ID At Impeachment Hearing

It was a remarkable moment, even for a White House full of them. The hearing is the first chance for America, and the rest of the world, to see and hear for themselves about Trump’s actions toward Ukraine and consider whether they are, in fact, impeachable offenses.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans at the start of the first public hearing of Donald Trump’s impeachment investigation immediately pushed Democrats to hear from the anonymous whistleblower who sparked the inquiry.

GOP Rep. Michael Conaway of Texas asked that the panel issue a subpoena for the still-unknown whistleblower to appear in closed session.

But Rep. Adam Schiff, the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, denied the request Wednesday, saying it would be considered later.

“We will do everything necessary to protect the whistleblower’s identity,” Schiff said.

The panel opened the extraordinary process to determine whether the 45th president of the United States should be removed from office.

Schiff outlined the question at the core of the impeachment inquiry — whether the president used his office to pressure Ukraine officials for personal political gain.

“The matter is as simple and as terrible as that,” Schiff said. “Our answer to these questions will affect not only the future of this presidency but the future of the presidency itself, and what kind of conduct or misconduct the American people may come to expect from their commander in chief.”

It was a remarkable moment, even for a White House full of them. The hearing is the first chance for America, and the rest of the world, to see and hear for themselves about Trump’s actions toward Ukraine and consider whether they are, in fact, impeachable offenses.

The top Republican on the panel, Rep. Devin Nunes of California, accused the Democratic majority of conducting a “scorched earth” effort to take down the president after the special counsel’s Russia investigation into the 2016 election failed to spark impeachment proceedings.

“We’re supposed to take these people at face value when they trot out new allegations?” said Nunes, a top Trump ally. He derided what he called the “cult-like atmosphere in the basement of the Capitol” where investigators have been interviewing witnesses behind closed doors for weeks. Transcripts of those interviews have been released.

Nunes called the Ukraine matter a “low rent” sequel to the Russia probe. “Democrats are advancing their impeachment sham,” he said.

The proceedings were being broadcast live, and on social media, from a packed hearing room on Capitol Hill. The country has been here only three times before, and never against the 21st century backdrop of real-time commentary, including from the Republican president himself.

Testifying will be two seasoned diplomats, William Taylor, the graying former infantry officer now charge d’affaires in Ukraine, and George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary in Washington, telling the striking, if sometimes complicated story of a president allegedly using foreign policy for personal and political gain ahead of the 2020 election.

So far, the narrative is splitting Americans, mostly along the same lines as Trump’s unusual presidency. The Constitution sets a dramatic but vague bar for impeachment, and there’s no consensus yet that Trump’s actions at the heart of the inquiry meet the threshold of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Trump calls the whole thing a “witch hunt,” a retort that echoes Nixon’s own defense. “READ THE TRANSCRIPT,” he tweeted Wednesday.

At its core, the inquiry stems from Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukraine’s newly elected president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy when he asked the Zelenskiy for “a favor.”

Trump wanted the Ukraine government to investigate Democrats in the 2016 election and his potential 2020 rival, Joe Biden, all while holding as leverage military aid the young democracy relies on as it confronts an aggressive Russia.

The anonymous whistleblower first alerted officials to concerns about the phone call. The White House released a rough transcript of the conversation, with portions deleted.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was initially reluctant to launch a formal impeachment inquiry. But she pressed ahead in September after the whistleblower’s complaint.

The White House has instructed administration officials not to testify in the inquiry. But over the past month, witness after witness has appeared behind closed doors to tell the investigators what they know.

Most received subpoenas to appear, and both Taylor and Kent had fresh subpoenas Wednesday.

Trump lashed out at the witnesses, tweeting they were “NEVER TRUMPERS,” but the two are career diplomats working for both Republican and Democratic administrations. There’s no evidence they engaged in partisan activity opposing Trump.

Whether Wednesday’s proceedings begin to end a presidency or help secure Trump’s position, it was certain his chaotic term had finally arrived at a place he could not control and a force, the constitutional system of checks and balances, that he could not ignore.

Unlike the Watergate hearings and Richard Nixon, there is not yet a “cancer-on-the-presidency” moment galvanizing public opinion. Nor is there the national shrug, as happened when Bill Clinton’s impeachment ultimately didn’t result in his removal from office. It’s perhaps most like the partisanship-infused impeachment of Andrew Johnson after the Civil War.

Barbers Trained To Monitor Customers’ Blood Pressure

“Equipped with a blood pressure monitor and driven by purpose, our barbers can now empower, encourage, and enable their clients to better manage their health conditions and live a healthier life.”

Contributed by Rebecca Johnson

Barbershops are an established social hub for black men everywhere. Live Chair, an app that allows barbers to book and market their shops, equips barbers to screen their clients’ blood pressure and refer at-risk men to health professionals.

“Live Chair barbers are using their contact and influence to overcome healthcare inequities that have caused gaping health disparities for African American men. Equipped with a blood pressure monitor and driven by purpose, our barbers can now empower, encourage, and enable their clients to better manage their health conditions and live a healthier life,” their website says.

In June 2018, a study was done by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) where they paired black barbershops with pharmacists. Researchers enrolled 319 black men who had high blood pressure and regularly visited on of the participating barbershops. One group encouraged the men to meet with a pharmacist while the other group encouraged the men to make lifestyle changes.

“After six months, 63 percent of the men who worked with the pharmacists achieved a healthy blood pressure level, while only 12 percent of the men in the control group did so. The intervention group achieved an average blood-pressure level of less than 130/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). In the control group, the average blood pressure fell to 145 mm Hg.”

Nile Style, a barbershop in Northeast Baltimore has trained their barbers to use blood pressure monitors and screen their customers for hypertension, as reported by WBAL. Their customers consist of mostly black men, who are more likely to develop hypertension than their white counterparts.

“Black men consist of 47% hypertension in this country and are 60% more likely to die of a stroke than their white peers. So, meeting them where they are here at the barbershop, where they come, so this event is so, so helpful,” said the shop’s owner, Shanile Shakoor.

Trump and Black Voters

Trump campaign launching black outreach effort for 2020

ATLANTA (AP) — During the 2016 campaign, candidate Donald Trump stood in front of largely white crowds and asked black voters to consider, “What the hell do you have to lose?”
Four years later, the president has a new message for black voters: Look what I’ve delivered.
Trump and his campaign will be launching a new “Black Voices for Trump” outreach initiative in Atlanta on Friday dedicated to “recruiting and activating Black Americans in support of President Trump,” according to the campaign. Much of that effort will focus on highlighting ways that African Americans have benefited from the Trump economy, according to advisers.
“Black Americans have never had a better champion than President Trump,” said senior campaign adviser Katrina Pierson in a statement. She added, “Black Americans’ strong support for President Trump will ensure a second term for the President.”
That prediction is met with skepticism from critics, however, given Trump’s consistently dismal approval rating with black voters, who overwhelmingly disapprove of the job he’s doing.
Trump has spent much of the last four years engaged in racially charged attacks, going after minority members of Congress, claiming “no human being” would want to live in rat “infested,” majority-minority Baltimore and claiming that there were “very fine people on both sides” of the deadly Charlottesville protest against white supremacists.
Shortly after landing in Georgia on Friday, Trump retweeted a call from one black supporter for submissions for a “#MAGACHALLENGE” competition featuring Trump-friendly rap songs. Trump said he would be announcing the winners and inviting them to the White House to meet with him and perform.
“I think black Americans are not the audience for these outreach efforts,” said Theodore Johnson, a senior fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice who is an expert in race and politics. While Trump might be able to maintain the low level of black support he received in 2016, or perhaps expand it by one or two points, he sees little evidence the president can change many minds.
“I think this is not going to move the needle at all,” Johnson said.
Before launching the new effort, Trump met with supporters at a fundraiser that was closed to the media. Nearby, a small group of protesters chanted, “Lock him up!” Trump is expected to raise about $3.5 million for a joint fundraising committee benefiting the Republican National Committee, the Trump campaign and the campaign of Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga. About 325 people are expected to attend.
In 2016, 6% of black voters supported Trump, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of people who participated in its polls and were confirmed to have voted. There is no indication his support is growing. Polling shows that African Americans continue to be overwhelmingly negative in their assessments of the president’s performance, with his approval hovering around 1 in 10 over the course of his presidency, according to Gallup.
Yet Trump’s campaign dismissed the numbers, insisting the campaign has seen favorable movement and arguing the president can increase his margins with black voters by bringing new people into the fold.
“The polls have never been favorable for Trump, and the only poll that matters is on Election Day,” Pierson said.
The campaign has launched similar coalitions for women, Latinos and veterans.
Darrell Scott, a black Ohio pastor and a longtime supporter of the president who will be part of the new coalition and attend Friday’s event, said that in 2015 and 2016, supporters trying to sell Trump to black voters could only point forward to share things they anticipated from Trump.
“Now that it’s 2020, we’re able to point backwards and to some very definitive accomplishments that the president has done,” Scott said. “He delivered on promises he didn’t even make.”
The campaign and White House point to a list of achievements, including passage of bipartisan criminal justice reform legislation, which Trump signed into law last year, along with his ongoing support for opportunity zones in urban areas and new investments in historically black colleges.
“I don’t know anyone who’s done that kind of work outside of the president on attacking those big issues or trying to stop drugs from coming into the neighborhood and, at the same time, giving people second chances,” said Ja’Ron Smith, deputy assistant to the president and one of the White House’s few minority high-ranked officials.
Advisers also point to a series of economic gains, including the fact that black unemployment hit a record low last year, with fewer blacks living in poverty. But Trump and his campaign also have a tendency to exaggerate the gains, giving Trump credit for trends that were years in the making, seizing on momentary upticks, cherry-picking favorable statistics and ignoring more troubling ones, such as black home ownership and net worth.
Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Karen Bass, D-Calif., said Thursday that contrary to Trump’s claims, in the three years of his presidency, African Americans have lost a lot.
“He has never had support from African Americans, but what we know about the president is that he will lie and say that he has,” said Bass, who noted that Trump rarely appears before black audiences.
“He has to identify a handful of African Americans and take them with him wherever he goes,” she said.
If he were any other Republican incumbent who inherited declining unemployment numbers and was able to sustain them, Trump would have a legitimate case to make to black voters, said Republican strategist Shermichael Singleton. But “because of some of his racial pronouncements … I think a significant percentage of African Americans are completely turned off.”
A September AP-NORC poll found that only roughly 3 in 10 Americans say the things Trump has done as president have been good for African Americans. And just 4% of African Americans said they think Trump’s actions have had a positive impact on African Americans in general, while 81% said they think they’ve been bad.
Yet even if he can’t win over black voters, some suspect that’s not the point. As long as the campaign can keep on-the-fence voters from casting their ballots for the eventual Democratic nominee, the campaign will be helping Trump inch closer to a second victory.
Some analysts have pointed to a precipitous drop in black turnout in 2016 as one of the reasons Trump beat his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, who was far less popular — especially among black men —than former President Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 60% of non-Hispanic blacks voted in 2016, versus about 67% in 2012. And that drop was seen in cities with significant African American populations in critical swing states that helped Trump eke out a victory.
“I do think the main objective is to discourage turnout,” said Johnson. “I absolutely think this is about creating doubt in black voters’ minds about the Democratic nominee” so people feel like “there’s almost no one worth voting for.”
And he said that fears were growing it might work.
“There is a pretty tangible fear among black Americans that Trump is going to win again because black turnout won’t be enough to mute the white turnout,” he said. “There’s a sense that in 2020 he’s going to win again.”

The Lebron James Family Foundation has partnered with Graduated Hotels to provide transitional housing f0r the students and their families. According to the statement, the hotel will be renovated to include individual living units for students and their families.

The building is about five blocks away from the school. Some of the students and their families experience poverty, domestic violence and homelessness. “Initially, our work was focused on helping these kids earn an education,” LeBron James said in a statement. “But we’ve found that it is impossible to help them learn if they are struggling to survive – if they are hungry, if they have no heat in the freezing winter, if they live in fear for their safety. We want this place to be their home where they feel safe, supported and loved, knowing we are right there with them every step of the way as they get back on their feet.”

“Proud of this!!!!! There’s always more to be done when it comes to giving my kids an opportunity to be successful in life,” James said on Twitter. “Every barrier we remove can possibly change their family’s life and we’re never going to stop!!”

Last week, the NBA star and his family were forced to evacuate their home due to the California wildfires.
