Meek Mill Launches New Record Label With Jay-Z’s Roc Nation

“Of course I had offers to do a lot of business with other people, but the relationship we’ve built from (Roc Nation) believing in me through my whole career, through my ups and downs and the morals they showed to me and my team when it wasn’t in their best interest to have showed it — I feel comfortable going through this right here at home,” Mill said. “We’re ready to work. We’re just starting the beginning of a new chapter, a new page.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Meek Mill is in a Jay-Z state of mind: The Philadelphia rapper-turned-entrepreneur is launching a new record label in a joint venture with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.

The two hip-hop players celebrated the launch of Dream Chasers Records on Tuesday at the Roc Nation headquarters in New York City, signing contracts at a small press conference and popping champagne to celebrate the partnership.

Mill, 32, will lead Dream Chasers as president, overseeing the label and its staff.

Mill built a strong fan base and buzz in Philadelphia with a string of mixtapes, and reached the mainstream when he topped the charts with his major-label debut in 2012. He’s released two platinum albums and two gold records and reached the Top 25 of the pop charts with songs like “Going Bad” and “All Eyes on You.” He even beat out Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre to win top rap album at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.

Jay-Z, hip-hop’s ultimate businessman, said he and Mill not only bonded musically, but in other areas.

“His integrity, his honesty, his sense of responsibility,” Jay-Z rattled on about Mill. “Everything that he’s done leading up to this point, it showed that he can carry that weight for the next generation of people. Everybody can sign some artists, make some money and brag about how hot they are for … (but) for us, we look at the big picture. For us, it’s way beyond signing hot artists and having a hot record.”

Jay-Z, Mill and others joined forces earlier this year to form a coalition that lobbies for changes to state probation and parole laws, called the Reform Alliance. Mill became a symbol for criminal justice reform activists after a judge in Pennsylvania sentenced him to two to four years in prison for minor violations of his probation conditions in a decade-old gun and drug possession case. He spent months in prison before a court ordered him released.

“We come from the same neighborhoods, been through the same things,” said Jay-Z, who grew up in the Marcy Projects complex in Brooklyn. “We’re some of the few that made it through … (and) that responsibility is not lost on us. We haven’t made it to this point just to be like, ‘Let’s just irresponsibly live our life.’ We had fun, don’t get me wrong. It’s fun too, but there’s a responsibility that we carry for the entire culture.”

Mill added: “Me coming out of prison this time, I signed up for a bigger responsibility. I always felt like I had a responsibility to lead the culture as much as I can. I always say Jay-Z and others that came before me was like a snowplow for people like myself. They made it easier to walk through the snowstorm. I want to continue to be a snowplow for the next generation coming behind me.”

For his new label, Mill said he hopes to sign hard-working artists looking to move the needle, “not a social media success for the weekend or for the month.”

The rapper will launch his Legendary Nights Tour on Aug. 28 with Future and will release a five-episode documentary series on Aug. 9 on Amazon Prime Video called “Free Meek,” which follows his fight for exoneration in his legal case and his work with the Reform Alliance.

Mill recently announced he’s now a co-owner of sports-apparel retailer Lids, and will lead the company’s creative strategy and release a limited-edition collection of hats.

Jay-Z said Mill will be a success in whatever he tries.

“I know he can make music. We’ve seen that. We’ve heard the music. I think he cannot only make music, he can make stars. Not only can he make stars, he can make film. He can do anything he wants,” he said.

“What we lacked for so long was opportunity,” Jay-Z continued. “We’ve never had this sort of power. We never had someone come before us and then come back and show us, ‘Yo, this is how it’s done. These are the mistakes that I made.’ We’ve never had it. It just hadn’t existed. Hip-hop is 40 years old (and) we’ve just now gotten to the point where we can really affect change and the music and the culture that we create. We’ve been giving it away for so long, which is understandable, we got to start somewhere. Got to clean the floors up before you own the building — but we don’t shine shoes anymore.”

Community Remembers Karon Brown and Calls for End to Violence

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, July 23, 2019) – Dozens of family members, friends, classmates, and persons who are sick and tired of the violence packed  the field of Stanton Elementary School in SE Tuesday to remember 11-year-old Karon Brown.  Karon is the youth shot and killed last Thursday just blocks away from his school.

His mother fought back tears as she thanked the crowd for coming out.  Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White called on the community to stop the gun violence.  “If they’re killing us and we’re killing us, soon there will be no us,” White told the crowd.

Classmates and members of the football team Karon played on spoke about his love for sports.  Coaches spoke of his entrepreneurial spirit.  “I would see him daily at the gas station and he would be asking people to pump their gas.  I would also give him a dollar or two and he would run straight to McDonald’s to eat.  That boy loved to eat,” said one coach.

Metropolitan Police have made an arrest in Karon’s killing,  which sources  say stemmed from sort of schoolyard fight.  Tony McClam is charged with first-degree murder.  McClam’s stepson reportedly knew Karon.  Reports say McClam thought Karon was part of a group that had been fighting with his stepson days before.

Karon was killed when McClam allegedly shot into a vehicle Karon had jumped into trying to flee the fight.

Michelle Obama Tells Students to Tough It Out

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, July 23, 2019) – Former First Lady Michelle Obama brought her campaign of  “Beating the Odds” to Howard University.  It’s an initiative she started back in 2014 while at the White House to inspire students to go to and complete higher education.

Mrs. Obama spoke to dozens of high school students inside of Howard’s School of Business, sharing her own story of being a first time college student and how she had to overcome many transitional fears.  “The people  in my life who were afraid of that insecurity during transition.  Those are the people who were stuck.  They were stuck where they are because they did not have the courage to stick through those first feelings and first emotions of being scared,” said Mrs. Obama.

Dozens of students sat in sheer quite as Mrs. Obama and a panel of recent college graduates explained how they were able to navigate through school.  From student loans to tackling issues like overeating and depression, the panel stressed the importance of having a network of friends, family, and advisors to reach out to during those tough times.

The Beating the Odds Summit, part of Reach Higher,  is a celebration of students’ hard work and determination to not only graduate from high school, but to make the commitment to complete college.

“I had to learn how to transition throughout my life because I didn’t quit when it got hard. That’s how you make it to the top.” added Obama.

Recent reports show as many as 20% of students who make a concrete commitment to go to college never make it.  Financial burdens, fear of leaving home, and enrollment requirements are often factors that keep students from carrying out that commitment.

The Beating the Odds Summit, a daylong event, is designed to address those issues often referred as the so-called Summer Melt.

First Generation College Students

What are the challenges faced by first generation college students?

We talking about the issues that may not occur to first generation college students or their parents.

Senate Considers Marijuana Banking Rules

Senate Takes on Issue of Legal Marijuana Sales and Banking

(Washington, DC) — The Senate is considering the issue of legal marijuana sales and banking. Senators discussed regulating banks’ ability to provide services to businesses that sell marijuana in states where it has been legalized. Since the drug is currently illegal at the federal level, banks are not allowed to provide those services. Senators Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Cory Gardner of Colorado aim to bring a version of the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act to the floor to address this issue. A version has already passed the House.

There’s A New Warning About Taking Aspirin To Prevent A Heart Attack

It is estimated that more than 29 million people take aspirin for the prevention and without a Doctor’s recommendation.

For year’s adults have been told by the medical professionals to take low doses of aspirin a day to avoid a heart attack or stroke. Well, today there is a new report out by Harvard and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center shows that doing so could do more harm than good for healthy people. This warning does not apply to anyone who has already suffered a heart attack.

It is estimated that more than 29 million people take aspirin for the prevention and without a Doctor’s recommendation.

Dr. Harmony Reynolds, Cardiologist at New York University says for people over 70 years old aspirin can cause bleeding. She says it raises the risk of bleeding from the stomach or any part of the body.

The study has even prompted the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology to change their guidelines. Now people over 70 who don’t have heart disease or are younger but at increased risk of bleeding should avoid daily aspirin for prevention.
Only certain 40 to 70-year-olds who don’t already have heart disease are at high enough risk to warrant 75 to 100 milligrams of aspirin daily, and that’s for a doctor to decide.

White Man Denies Saying ‘Go Back Where You Came From’

In a tearful Facebook video posted Friday, Thomas said she was in the express line because she is nine months pregnant and cannot stand for long. Thomas’ video went viral as the hashtag #IStandwithErica trended on Twitter.

MABLETON, Ga. (AP) — A white man has admitted cursing at a pregnant black Georgia lawmaker for taking too many items into a supermarket express lane but denies telling her, “go back where you came from.”

Eric Sparkes showed up during a WSB-TV interview with Rep. Erica Thomas of Austell on Saturday, outside the Atlanta-area Publix store where the incident occurred , the station reported .

He denied making any racially charged comment, adding, “I am Cuban.”

Thomas confronted Sparkes in front of reporters and said he had “degraded and berated” her. She has told The Associated Press she notified police and will seek store video.

In a tearful Facebook video posted Friday, Thomas said she was in the express line because she is nine months pregnant and cannot stand for long. Thomas’ video went viral as the hashtag #IStandwithErica trended on Twitter.

On Saturday, Sparkes told reporters he called her a vulgarity but did not say anything racial.

Thomas said Sparkes was just trying to make himself look better.

Sparkes said he’s a Democrat and was being unjustly attacked for political purposes.

Thomas said Friday that she never identified herself to Sparkes as a public official. She said she was so taken aback by his actions that she didn’t think to try to record them.

In a statement, Publix has said the company is “cooperating with local law enforcement as they look into the matter.”

The incident came days after President Donald Trump tweeted that four congresswomen of color, including U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, should go back to the “broken and crime infested” countries they came from.

In her video, Thomas alluded to those attacks and accused the president of inciting hate.

During the television interview, she said Sparkes “needs to be held accountable because people can’t just go out and berate pregnant women.”

Art Neville, Member Of Neville Brothers, Meters, Dies At 81

The cause of death was not immediately available but Neville had battled a number of health issues including complications from back surgery.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — , a member of a storied New Orleans musical family who performed with his siblings in The Neville Brothers band and founded the groundbreaking funk group The Meters, died Monday. The artist nicknamed “Poppa Funk” was 81.

Neville’s manager, Kent Sorrell, said Neville died at his home.

“Art ‘Poppa Funk’ Neville passed away peacefully this morning at home with his adoring wife, Lorraine, by his side,” Sorrell said in an email.

The cause of death was not immediately available but Neville had battled a number of health issues including complications from back surgery.

“Louisiana lost an icon today,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a news release.

The Neville Brothers spent some of their childhood in the now demolished Calliope housing project in New Orleans and some at a family home in uptown New Orleans.

In a 2003 interview with Offbeat magazine, Art Neville described going to a Methodist church as a child where he had his first encounter with a keyboard.

“My grandmother used to clean the pulpit. She was in there cleaning it one day and I guess she was babysitting me ’cause I was in there with her. She went to one side and all of a sudden I was on the side where the organ was,” he said. “Something told me to turn it on. I reached up and pressed a bass note and it scared the daylights out of me!”

That experience helped kick off a lifelong career as a keyboardist and vocalist.

The Neville Brothers — Art, Charles, Cyril and Aaron — started singing as kids but then went their separate ways in the 1950s and ’60s. In 1954 Art Neville was in high school when he sang the lead on the Hawketts’ remake of a country song called “Mardi Gras Mambo.”

He told the public radio show “American Routes” how he was recruited by the Hawketts. “I don’t know how they found out where I lived,” he said in the interview. “But they needed a piano player. And they came up to the house and they asked my mother and father could I go.”

More than 60 years later, the song remains a staple of the Carnival season, but that longevity never translated into financial success for Art Neville who received no money for it.

“It made me a big shot around school,” Art said with a laugh during a 1993 interview with The Associated Press.

In the late ’60s, Art Neville was a founding member of The Meters, a pioneering American funk band that also included Cyril Neville, Leo Nocentelli (guitar), George Porter Jr. (bass) and Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste (drums).

The Meters were the house band for Allen Toussaint’s New Orleans soul classics and opened for the Rolling Stones’ tour of the Americas in 1975 and of Europe in 1976.

They also became known for their session work with Paul McCartney, Robert Palmer and Patti LaBelle and recordings with Dr. John.

The Meters broke up in 1977, but members of the band have played together in groups such as the Funky Meters and the Meter Men. And in more recent years The Meters have reunited for various performances and have often been cited as an inspiration for other groups.

Flea, the bass player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, paid homage to The Meters when he invited members of the group onstage to perform with the Chili Peppers during a 2016 performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

“We are their students,” Flea said.

As The Meters were breaking up, The Neville Brothers were coming together. In 1978 they recorded their first Neville Brothers album.

Charles died in 2018.

For years, The Neville Brothers were the closing act at Jazz Fest. After 2005′s Hurricane Katrina, the four brothers — like many New Orleanians — were scattered across the country while the city struggled to recover. They returned to anchor the festival in 2007.

“This is how it should be,” Art Neville said during a news conference with festival organizers announcing their return to the annual event. “We’re a part of Jazz Fest.”

He shared in three Grammy awards: with The Neville Brothers for “Healing Chant,” in 1989; with a group of musicians on the Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute “SRV Shuffle in 1996; and with The Meters when they got a lifetime achievement in 2018.

“Art will be deeply missed by many, but remembered for imaginatively bringing New Orleans funk to life,” the Recording Academy, which awards the Grammys, said in a news release.

Neville announced his retirement in December.

Marvel’s Next Films Will Bring Diversity, Onscreen And Off

“It’s really interesting because when we were looking for a director, you start to see some of the systemic problems,” Johansson said. “Even looking for a female director who has had enough experience — who has had the opportunity to have the experience to sit at the helm of something huge like this, you know, choices are limited because of that. And it sucks.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marvel’s push for more women and people of color in its immensely popular film franchise is extending to behind the camera as it launches its next round of films after the massive success of “Avengers: Endgame.” Of the five films the superhero studio announced at Comic-Con on Saturday, only one is set to be directed by a white man.

“It’s about fresh voices and new voices and great filmmakers who can continue to steer the (Marvel Cinematic Universe) into new places,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in an interview after the studio’s explosive Hall H panel. “And I am as proud of that lineup of directors as you saw today as any.”

In addition to a slew of women and people of color at the helm of the upcoming Marvel films, the weekend’s announcements promised more diversity on screen.

First up for release is the long-awaited solo film starring Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, the lethal assassin she has played for nearly a decade. The film is set for release in May 2020.

Johansson said the search for “Black Widow” director Cate Shortland wasn’t easy.

The actress added that she was proud to see the diversity on stage during Marvel’s Hall H panel.

“Looking out on that stage tonight, it was incredible. It was really moving, also just to see how incredibly diverse the universe is — and reflects what we see all around us. It’s incredible,” she said.

In terms of more diversity, “Black Widow” is just the beginning.

“The Eternals” will feature a cast full of actors of color, including Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, and Salma Hayek. Simu Liu will become Marvel’s first big screen Asian American superhero when “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is released in February 2021. Natalie Portman will play a female Thor in the new “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which will also feature Tessa Thompson’s character, Valkyrie, as the MCU’s first LGBTQ superhero.

“First of all, as new King (of Asgard), she needs to find her queen, so that will be her first order of business. She has some ideas. Keep you posted,” Thompson said during the panel. Feige later confirmed the news in an interview with the website io9.

The studio is also reviving one of Marvel’s most iconic black characters, Blade (previously played by Wesley Snipes), with the help of Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali. Feige told The Associated Press that right after winning his second Academy Award for “Green Book” earlier this year, Ali set up a meeting.

“Within 10 minutes, he basically was like, ‘What’s happening with ‘Blade’? I want to do it.′ And we went, that’s what happening with ‘Blade.’ Let’s do it,” Feige said.

“Captain Marvel,” released in March, was the first of Marvel Studios film to be centered entirely on a female character. It earned $427 million domestically, and along with the DC Comics film “Wonder Woman” has created momentum for more films with female heroes leading the way.

“Marvel is really focused on having very strong female characters at the forefront of their stories,” said actress Rachel Weisz, who also stars in “Black Widow.” ″And I think that’s great. This film has got three. It’s Scarlett, Florence Pugh, myself. So I think yeah, they are doing wonderful work to represent women, people of color, and tell different kinds of stories.”

The sliver of Hollywood still on the outside of the Marvel’s cinematic empire was paying close attention to the news.

Actress, writer and director Lena Waithe tweeted Sunday: “Captain America is black. Thor is a woman. the new Blade got two Oscars. 007 is a black woman. And The Little Mermaid bout to have locs. (Expletive). Just. Got. Real.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama Returns To HU

10 to 20 percent of students who choose to go to college never make it. One of the top reason, fiances. The numbers jump to 40 percent in other communities.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama will be on Howard University Campus this morning. She is scheduled to speak to some high school students preparing to go onto college. It’s apart of Mrs. Obama’s Reach Higher initiative.

Today’s 2019 Beating the Odd Summit will celebrate and encourage students preparing for higher education to not only strive for a high school diploma but a college degree. The day-long event will be held at the School of Business.

In 2014 Mrs. Obama announced the creation of Reach Higher Initiative to encourage students to want and to achieve higher education. In 2015 came the Better Make Room campaign. This program allowed students to share their experiences to help others preparing for higher learning.

Here are some stats about kids and higher education. 10 to 20 percent of students who choose to go to college never make it. One of the top reason, fiances. The numbers jump to 40 percent in other communities. Students from low-income families have a 9% six-year college graduation rate.

The goal of Reach Higher is to help underserved students navigate the new and sometimes scary world of college. They meet students where they are and help them get to where they want to be. To learn more click here https://www.reachhigher.org/

The President And Congressional Leaders Reach Budget Deal

The President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said “This agreement is a total abdication of fiscal responsibility by Congress and the president.”

American’s are waking up this morning to some good news coming out of Capitol Hill. President Trump and congressional leaders have reached a budget deal.

The 2-year 1.37 trillion dollar deal would avert a government shutdown and provide critical funds to strengthen our nations security. In addition Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer addressed the media and said the plan calls for more investment in the middle class and it would allow the country to extend the debit ceiling until after the 2020 Presidential election.

The President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said “This agreement is a total abdication of fiscal responsibility by Congress and the president.” “It may end up being the worst budget agreement in our nation’s history, proposed at a time when our fiscal conditions are already precarious.”

Lawmakers still have to approve it. It will first move through the House followed by the Senate next week. The Senate is expected to easily support it. Congress goes on its annual August recess next week.

Spike In Violence Leaves Several Dead In DC

(Washington, DC) — A recent spike of violence in DC is leaving several people dead. At least eight people have been killed in the District since Wednesday, including the shooting death of 11-year-old Karon Brown. At least eleven others have been wounded in shootings, but have survived. The latest incident happened Sunday evening in the 13-hundred block of Congress Street, southeast. A man was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital where he died. DC has had 94 homicides so far this year, compared with 85 last year. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Police Chief Peter Newsham are calling on the public to help law enforcement take illegal guns off the streets.

‘Dear White People’ Season 3 Trailer Released

This season is going to give the viewers suspense, humor, and of course drama.

Contributed by Jewell Hill

Classes begin at Winchester College later this summer, as “Dear White People” returns for a third season on Friday, August 2. Along with the trailer release, Netflix also announced a handful of actors who will make guest star appearances on this season. Yvette Nicole Brown, Blair Underwood, Laverne Cox, Flavor Flav, and the show’s own creator Justin Simien will make appearances this upcoming season.

At the end of season 2, Winchester’s finest had just discovered a new mystery. IndieWire reports that after spending the second season searching for an intriguing secret society on campus called The Order of X, Samantha White (Logan Browning) and Lionel (DeRon Horton) follow clues that bring them one-on-one with the show’s narrator, Giancarlo Esposito. The season ends there leaving suspicion that Esposito is a part of a secret society, or if the secret society even exists. The trailer drops some hints of the narrator and adds suspense to the show as a whole.

Some strange but entertaining changes have been made to the show. Entertainment Weekly reports that Sam is “checked out”; former golden boy Troy (Brandon P. Bell) is working for Pastiche, the campus’ satirical and oft-problematic publication; Reggie (Marque Richardson) is dating Joelle; and no one is showing up to Black Caucus meetings.

This season is going to give the viewers suspense, humor, and of course drama.

“Old Town Road” logs its 16th week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart this week, matching the success that Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” achieved in 1995-1996. Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber’s “Despacito” accomplished the feat in 2017.

NEW YORK (AP) — Lil Nas X has taken his horse to the old town road and ridden it to the top of the Billboard charts for 16 weeks, tying a record set by Mariah Carey and Luis Fonsi.

No song has spent more than 16 weeks at No. 1 on the all-genre Hot 100 chart in the 61-year history of the Billboard charts.

The country-rap “Old Town Road” was originally a solo song, but 20-year-old Lil Nas X added Billy Ray Cyrus to the track and it topped the charts, achieving most of his success through audio streaming.

The song initially was in a bit of controversy in March when Billboard removed it from its country charts, deeming it not country enough (it peaked at No. 19 on the country charts). But the drama didn’t hurt the song; it only propelled it.

“Old Town Road” appears on Lil Nas X’s debut EP “7,” which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s 200 albums chart earlier this month. The EP also features the Top 40 hits “Panini” and “Rodeo” with Cardi B.

“Old Town Road” is also spending its 16th week on top of both the R&B/Hip-Hop and rap songs charts.

A number of songs have debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart, unable to push “Old Town Road” out of its top position, including two tunes from Taylor Swift (“You Need to Calm Down,” ″ME!”); Ed Sheeran and Bieber’s “I Don’t Care”; and two songs from Shawn Mendes (“If I Can’t Have You,” ″Senorita” with Camila Cabello).

Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” stopped “Despacito” from reaching a 17th week at No. 1 when the pop smash jumped from No. 77 to No. 1 in 2017. Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” ended Carey and Boyz II Men’s epic run in 1996.

Bill Cosby’s Mental Health Is Reportedly Declining, Asking for His Late Daughter

“It leads to an awkward silence, then his memory clears-and he reels over her death all over again,” says an insider to Radar Online.

Contributed by Ciana Moore

Bill Cosby is in a “mental fog” while serving time at Pennsylvania’s Phoenix State Correctional Facility. Radar Online broke the story, and according to their sources, Cosby is asking how his daughter Ensa, who passed away in February 2018 from renal failure, is doing. Those close to him believe he is suffering from severe dementia.

Bill Cosby is currently serving a three to ten year sentence after being convicted of drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand. Sources close to Cosby are reporting that he is so humiliated from being sentenced that that is the reason his mental state is getting worse. Cosby is refusing to see visitors because he allegedly promised his family he’d “never let [them] see him in a prison uniform.”

His family, however, believes Cosby is only hurting himself by refusing visitors and they believe personal contact will help his mental health and keep him in touch with the real world.

Things have gotten so bad for Cosby that he reportedly needs someone to walk him around constantly because he is legally blind, he has to be reminded what day it is and he often forgets to eat. Cosby will even call his wife, Camille, from the prison phone and ask how their deceased daughter Ensa is doing.

“It leads to an awkward silence, then his memory clears-and he reels over her death all over again,” says an insider to Radar Online.

‘RHOP’ Star Ashley Darby’s Reacts To Husband’s Sexual Assault Accusation

“I knew if I got sad and I broke down, Michael would feel bad or guilty, so I wanted to be strong for him. So when I saw everybody, I put on my smiling face,’ Ashley said in the episode. “I don’t want people to see me wallowing and see me sad or crying and think that I’m weak or don’t believe in my husband,” she continued.

After news broke of Ashley Darby’s husband, Michael Darby, being accused of sexual assault, she seemed unbothered and made sure it was known they were staying together. However, on Sunday’s episode of “The Real Housewives of Potomac”, Ashley admitted in a therapy session that she chose to hide her true feelings from the world, and from Michael.

She went on to say that the allegations are “not a big deal” and reassured that she believes Michael.

The claim against Michael made headlines once court documents were filed in September 2018. A Montgomery County court dismissed the charges shortly after on October 4. The charges would have been a felony assault and misdemeanor improper sexual conduct but were dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Although Ashley has put on a brave face, she said on Sunday’s episode of RHOP that when the news first broke, she had “a little breakdown.”

“When I got the news, I just froze. It was not real that something like this was happening to my husband and I. My heart was racing. I was getting light headed. Like, this just can’t be my reality,” she said recalling the events.

Cameraman Orville Palmer alleged the grope happened while filming a party in the basement of Ashley’s RHOP costar, Monique Samuel’s, house. Monique says she didn’t have cameras in the basement. There were also no witnesses able to confirm the grope happened, several people were in the basement at that time.

Another RHOP star, Candiace Dillard, had more to say about the allegations. “The number of people that were in Monique’s house at that party, somebody had that phone out taking a picture or selfie or something,” said Candiace. “So there must be some footage of Michael doing what he does, allegedly. It’s a matter of time before it comes out.”

Massive Protest Continues In Puerto Rico

Reportedly the chats show Rosello used obscene language when talking about women, other constituents and even victims of Hurricane Maria.

The unrest in Puerto Rico continues today for what may be the largest protest in history to support the resignation of Puerto Rican Governor, Ricardo Rossello.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take over the streets of Puerto Rico to expel Govt. Rosello a day after he announced he would not be resigning from office, but would not seek reelection or remain the head of the pro-statehood political party.

Gov. Rosello is under fire for conversations he had with 11 allies through an online chat. Reportedly the chats show Rosello used obscene language when talking about women, other constituents and even victims of Hurricane Maria.

After the leak of the 889-page chat, two government officials resigned. As Puerto Rico is trying to rebuild, the protests bring on great concern for its struggling government.

The protest has forced the U.S. territory to cancel cruise ships along with the closing of its biggest mall and other businesses.

Equifax Ordered To Pay Millions To DC For Massive Data Breach

The company must also create internal measures to ensure that this type of thing never happens again.

Many remember the massive data breach at Equifax in 2017. One of the nations top credit reporting agency had over $143-million Americans personal information, including Social Security numbers exposed.

Now the company has reached a deal that will require them to pay as much as $650-million dollars to settle state and federal investigations into the matter. Today the credit reporting company agreed to set up a $300 million dollar restitution fund. Some say it could go as high as $425 million for people affected by this huge breach of their personal information. The reason Equifax has agreed that they did not implement sufficient security measures to protect its network.

The money will be used for free credit monitoring services totaling $300 million, $175 million will go towards states, The District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. As a result of this breach it is now free to freeze your credit.

Equifax will also have to pay $175 million dollars in fine to states and $50 million dollars in fines to the Consumer Financial Protection Board. The company must also create internal measures to ensure that this type of thing never happens again.

Proposed Amazon Warehouse Clears Hurdle In Prince George’s County

A new Amazon warehouse got initial approval from the Prince George’s County Planning Board Thursday night. Some residents don’t want the facility because of increased traffic, among other issues.

A new Amazon warehouse to be located in Prince George’s County is moving closer to reality despite concerns from some residents.  At issue is whether an 800-thousand square foot merchandise logistics center should be built at the Westphalia Town Center in Upper Marlboro. Traffic from trucks making delivers throughout the day and night, as well as the quality of jobs at the proposed plant among the concerns brought forth last night during a hearing before the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
The planning commission approved the project last night with conditions. The measure now goes before the county council for final approval.

$3.2M Award, Cut Costs May Not Save Baltimore Symphony

The Baltimore Sun reports the SC&H Group audit released Tuesday says both methods would only temporarily help BSO unless additional revenues streams are established. It says it’s unclear if the orchestra will survive the year.

BALTIMORE (AP) — An audit says a possible infusion of $3.2 million in state funds and savings from a shortened season may not be enough to save the cash-strapped Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

The Baltimore Sun reports the SC&H Group audit released Tuesday says both methods would only temporarily help BSO unless additional revenues streams are established. It says it’s unclear if the orchestra will survive the year.

The audit considered the possible state emergency funding, which Gov. Larry Hogan refused to partially release this year. Hogan cited concerns that the state could soon face a $961 million deficit.

Hogan signaled in May that he might not release the first installment of the funds, leading the orchestra to abruptly cancel its summer series and lock out musicians amid ongoing contract negotiations.

AFT Offers $5K Reward For Morgan State Student Murder

Luis is from Prince George’s County. He was on his way home to see his parents in Hyattsville. The family has created a GoFuneMe page to help cover funeral expenses and to create a memorial fund.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is now getting involved in the cold case involving a Morgan State University Tuesday murdered last month. The agency is offering a 5,000 dollar reward for information on the two gunmen.

Baltimore City Police believe the male suspects are in their teens or early twenties. Officials say on July 11th, 19-year-old Manuel Luis was walking to his vehicle around 2:30 a.m. Reportedly two men yelled at him to stop. Luis continued and got into his vehicle. The suspects then walked up to him in his car and opened fire killing him. The two fled on foot.

Investigators say witnesses say that before the shooting of Luis the men were walking along Loch Raven Boulevard. Special Agent in charge Rob Cekada, say they need to catch the two suspects because of their apparent blatant disregard for life and their quick decision to shoot. He said they pose a clear danger to the city and its citizens.

Luis is from Prince George’s County. He was on his way home to see his parents in Hyattsville. The family has created a GoFuneMe page to help cover funeral expenses and to create a memorial fund. Anyone with information about this senseless killing is encouraged to call 888-ATF-TIPS.

R. Kelly Doesn’t Have Freedom, Money For Legal Battle

“You are almost better off asking what’s not different for him, the situation is like night and day,” said Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor in Chicago. “R. Kelly is now facing an array of challenges that he wasn’t facing years ago and the resources the federal government can bring to bear far exceed anything he faced in state court.”

CHICAGO (AP) — The difference between R. Kelly’s life in 2002 when he was last charged with child sex-related crimes and his arrest last week on even more serious charges was on full display when the R&B singer turned and slowly walked out of court.

Each step Tuesday was cut shorter than normal by the shackles around his ankles — a reminder of how small his world has become and how the advantages he once possessed have vanished. He was not posting bond and leaving by the front door to return to his life as an international recording artist as he did 17 years ago. He was heading back to a federal jail cell knowing there’s a good chance he will stay there for months or even years before his case comes to trial, after a judge said the charges against him are too serious to release him on bond.

In the space of an hour, a federal prosecutor and Kelly’s own lawyer outlined many of the ways the 52-year-old singer’s life has changed. When he eventually went to trial in on child pornography charges in 2008, his lawyers convinced a jury that Kelly was not guilty and prosecutors couldn’t prove that it was Kelly or a certain 14-year-old girl in a grainy sex video.

For starters, the federal prosecutors in New York and Chicago and the FBI agents who have been working on the case are among the most experienced law enforcement officials in the world.

“He’s facing a team of agents used to putting together complex, challenging cases against well-funded defendants,” he said. “They did the El Chapo case,” he said, referring to the federal probe that led to the conviction in New York of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, one of the wealthiest and most powerful drug lords in the world.

And unlike often financially strapped state prosecutors, the U.S. Attorney’s office and the FBI won’t be outspent, he said.

The federal indictments in New York and Chicago accuse Kelly of kidnapping and coercing women and girls into having sex, producing and receiving child pornography, inducing minors to engage in sexual activity, and taking part in a conspiracy worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover up sex crimes going back decades. Kelly, who has been in jail since Friday, was arrested on state sexual abuse and sexual assault charges involving three minors and one woman over roughly a 10-year period. As with his not guilty plea to the federal charges on Tuesday, he has pleaded not guilty to those charges as well.

Perhaps the biggest difference between the case in 2008 and now is the girl at the center of the charges. She didn’t testify then, perhaps as Assistant U.S. Attorney Angel Krull suggested to U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber, because Kelly paid her off. But in this case, she has already told her story.

“The victim has testified it was Kelly who did this,” Krull said. The young woman told a federal grand jury that she and Kelly appear in the three videos prosecutors say they have, in which he repeatedly made her call him “Daddy.” Prosecutors have five witnesses who will back up her account, Krull said. “There is no doubt it is him.”

It’s not just that the federal cases are potentially stronger this time. It’s that Kelly is weaker.

The two men who prosecutors say helped Kelly fix the first case have been charged with paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to recover child sex tapes to keep them away from prosecutors before Kelly’s 2008 trial. They’re no longer in a position to help him and could actually hurt his case.

Mariotti said he suspects that when prosecutors charged the two they did so thinking they might cooperate in exchange for reduced or dismissed charges. “I certainly think that was in the back of their minds when they charged them,” he said.

And while in 2002, Kelly walked out of court and into his recording studio to make a string of albums before his trial six years later, on Tuesday he did not return to the luxurious Trump Tower where he’s been living, but to jail.

Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, said his client is being held in isolation where he doesn’t even have access to television, and about the only technology he is afforded is a telephone for no more than a few minutes a week. That means Kelly, who has already been dropped by his record company and seen concert after concert canceled, has no way to make a living as long as he’s locked up.

All those millions and millions he made during his long career? Between child support payments, hundreds of thousands of dollars spent in a costly divorce settlement and, according to prosecutors, money he paid to find and keep young girls and prevent what he is doing with them from becoming public, Kelly is pretty much broke.

“He has no money,” Greenberg told the judge on Tuesday.

In fact, he is so short of funds that after he was arrested in February he sat in jail until a fan put up the $100,000 to bail him out.

New Report Finds More Than 5,000 DC Students Are Homeless

The District has trained liaison to assist students who meet the federal definition for homelessness.

It’s shocking to many. In the Nations Capitol, there are 5,593 students who attend the traditional public or charter school that are homeless. This number is from a report based on the 2018-2019 school year. It’s up from the 3,077 in 2014.

Now the District has seen a decrease in homelessness every year for the last three years. However, this study shows a trend of students being homeless has increased. These students are without a permanent place to time. Many of them going from one home to another or some living a short period in a shelter.

There is help for those who know or seek it. The District has trained liaison to assist students who meet the federal definition for homelessness. This allows the city to provide access to the Summer Bridge program as well as other support. The “Summer Bridge” program allows students to attend an educational program at American University. Participants get a laptop, bedding for their dorm bed, cleaning supplies and an alarm clock. This year the District has spent more than $100,000 sending homeless students to AU.

House Fights Over Impeachment Process

House set to block maverick Dem’s Trump impeachment effort.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House prepared Wednesday to easily derail a maverick Democrat’s drive to impeach President Donald Trump, an effort that party leaders consider a premature exercise that needlessly forces vulnerable swing-district lawmakers to cast a perilous and divisive vote.  The resolution by Texas Rep. Al Green, which cites Trump’s “racist” comments imploring Democratic congresswomen of color to go back to their native countries, had no chance of prevailing. A vote was expected as early as Wednesday.
But even facing certain defeat, the vote risked deepening the already raw rift between liberal Democrats itching to oust Trump and Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other leaders. Top Democrats prefer waiting to see if a stronger case for removal can be developed that would win broader public support, and they’re eagerly awaiting next week’s scheduled testimony to two House committees by special counsel Robert Mueller.
“I think we’ll get rid of all this right now,” Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters of Green’s proposal.
Recent polling has shown majorities oppose impeachment. Even if the House voted to impeach Trump, which would amount to filing formal charges, the Republican-run Senate would be unlikely to remove him from office.  Pelosi noted that six House committees are conducting investigations of Trump and said, “That is the serious path we’re on.”
The showdown over Green’s resolution also comes amid tensions between Pelosi and the same four progressive Democratic women who Trump targeted.
They’ve accused party leaders of not battling hard enough to curb Trump administration moves against migrants, and she in turn pointed out that the four have little support in Congress. The four have all been outspoken advocates of impeaching Trump.
