It is a landmark decision that will immediately impact the racial make-up of predominately white institutions of higher learning.

Ten people were killed back in 2021, during a concert that was headlined by hip-hop artist Travis Scott.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that race cannot be a factor when deciding college admissions.
Experts say today’s decision will have long range implications not only for higher education. But also for the American workplace. The 6-3 and 6-2 decisions respectfully, were led by the conservative arm of the high court.
Chief Justice John Roberts said that for too long universities have “concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills, built, or lessons learned, but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice.”
Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in dissent that the decision actually “rolls back decades of precedent and momentous progress.” The court’s first Black female justice, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson called the decision “truly a tragedy for us all.”
Reaction to today’s decision has been widespread from many civil rights groups and others.
Howard University released the following statement on today’s high court ruling:
Today’s Supreme Court decision to overturn affirmative action is deeply concerning. As a University dedicated to racial equity and justice, and whose faculty, students and storied alumni have advocated on the front lines to achieve equitable access for people of color, we understand the incredible challenge this decision will create for far too many individuals and communities.
The decision will not only have a devastating impact on the diversity of colleges and universities across the country, but will also decrease access to higher education for students of color everywhere. Education is still a top driver of economic success for all Americans, and this decision will have far-reaching ramifications for those seeking equity in the college admissions process and beyond.
At our core, Howard University is committed to developing scholars and professionals who drive change. At a time when we need it most, it is disheartening to know that this ruling will hinder certain students from gaining admission to institutions of higher learning and receiving a quality education that can prepare them to be change agents and contributing members of our society.
We will continue to partner with those institutions and organizations that understand the critical role affirmative action has played in ensuring equitable access to education for students of color and will closely monitor how today’s decision will impact higher education trends in the short and long term. We will also encourage others to join us in advocating for policies and legislation that safeguard a stronger future by increasing, not decreasing, educational opportunities for all.

Swimming in the Anacostia River has been illegal since the 1970s due to pollution. For the first time in 50 years, July 8th for a one-time swim event.
The Anacostia Riverkeeper, Trey Sherard, says “We live in a city with two rivers.”He continued, “I really hope for a future where everybody can enjoy that and it’s not a source of fear or concern.”
Sherard shares, why the river has been out of commission, “The problem last year, was not water quality.” He added, “Water quality was pretty good most of the summer. The problem last summer was red tape.” For almost 20 years DC Water put to work the $2.7 billion project to cleanse the water.
“Eventually, as we document that it’s safe to swim and we show more people that it’s safe to swim, we want to see the District move towards pulling down the swim ban, at least for the sites that we know are regularly safe,” Sherard says.

Patti LaBelle talked about the autocue mishap during her Tina Turner tribute at the BET Awards on Sunday night (June 25).

Patti talked emotionally about Tina to Entertainment Tonight after the moment went viral. “It meant no matter what voice I’m in ― I’m hoarse, I have a cold ― but whatever, I had to, I was giving it up for Tina Turner, ’cause she’s simply the best,” she said.
“So you heard a little tweak every now and then out there, but I love her, and I did my best,” said LaBelle.
She further expressed, “Tina was a trailblazer and someone I have a tremendous amount of respect for.”

Blair Underwood and Josie Hart recently got married in a very intimate wedding that Blair had his hand in. Blair said about the planning, “I’ve been very involved. I’m a Virgo and a bit of a perfectionist so I like to make sure details are taken care of.”
The guest list was no more than 100 people, and the bride’s signature drink, Prosecco with a splash of grenadine, was served during the cocktail reception along with grilled bacon-wrapped plantains, coconut-breaded shrimp, and Dominican ceviche.
Underwood said, “The first time I saw her in the dress, she looked like a princess. She was so beautiful. The deep emotions that were displayed during the ceremony, the lightness and fun of the reception, it all felt humbling because it all just fell into place. It was amazing.”
Hart added, “It was surreal and magical. His vows, to hear him say the words he said to me for our forever was incredible. Between our children and all of them giving toasts, the fireworks right after our first dance, the entire day was just beyond my expectations.”

The Federal Trade Commission is taking Amazon to court accusing the e-commerce giant of deceiving consumers.

The FTC added that Amazon made it harder to cancel subscriptions after consumers enrolled. No comment as yet from Amazon.
The district includes parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties.

While a number of news outlets are reporting the Titanic tourist submarine that went missing over the weekend has 40 hours of oxygen left, at least one expert is saying that’s a very generous estimate.
“If a person is injured, or they’re stressed, or they’re panicking, their air consumption increases. So those numbers of available hours go down. So if people are injured on that vessel, if they’re panicked on that vessel, they’re going to use more oxygen or more air more quickly.”
The OceanGates sub, which takes tourists underwater to catch a glimpse of the world’s most famous shipwreck, went missing about one hour, 45 minutes after it launched on Sunday morning, authorities say. It had enough oxygen to last 96 hours when it left, officials say.
