Work From Home, Work For Less?

Would you except less pay when you’re working from home because of the pandemic?

Would you accept a lower salary to work from home?
A recent Goodhire study found that 61% of workers surveyed said they would be willing to take a pay cut to continue working remotely.  Seventy percent said they would forfeit benefits like health insurance, paid time off and retirement accounts to work from home.  What do you think?

Because of that, the Justice Department has been consulted. Those revelations were detailed in a letter sent to the chairwoman of the House Oversight Committee. The highly sensitive material in question is being described by the National Archives as “classified national security information.”

Kim Potter Sentenced For Daunte Wright’s Death

Potter always maintained she shot Daunte Wright by accident when he resisted arrest, mistaking her service weapon for her Taser.

(Minneapolis, MN) — Former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter has been sentenced to 16 months in prison and eight months supervised release for killing an unarmed Black man during a traffic stop. Potter always maintained she shot Daunte Wright by accident when he resisted arrest, mistaking her service weapon for her Taser. Prosecutors wanted at least seven years. Potter was convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter in a trial in December.

The judge called this a tragic case, and noted the prosecutors did not prove aggravating factors in the case. Judge Regina Chu called this case “highly unusual” and added she believes Potter “made a tragic mistake,” but did not have animosity toward Wright.

Covid-19 Update: How to stay healthy and safe as mandates are being lifted?

Mask mandates are being lifted across the country. What does this mean for us all as we move forward during the pandemic?

Covid-19 cases across the globe are declining.  New cases have dropped nearly 20 percent from the week of February 7-13.

That news has no doubt helped spur the movement to remove or ease mask mandates.  We are seeing the results of that movement here in the DMV.

But is it safe to ease up on coronavirus restrictions now?

Tonight, as part of our weekly COVID-19 conversation, we discuss what we should do and know to stay healthy and safe as mandates are being lifted.

A new hospital will be coming to Southeast DC.
Today, Mayor Bowser and others put ceremonial shovels to the ground for the new Cedar Hill Medical Center to be located at the St. Elizabeth’s East campus grounds.  The 136-bed facility is scheduled to open in 2024. The hospital will be run by Universal Health Services, which runs George Washington University Hospital.  The naming of the new medical facility is in honor of the site of the final home of Frederick Douglass, named Cedar Hill, which sits in Anacostia.

Amir Locke Laid To Rest, Victim of Minneapolis Police Shooting

22-year-old Amir Locke laid to rest today. Locke was shot and killed by Minneapolis police during a no-knock warrant. He was not a named suspect.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Rev. Al Sharpton told the hundreds gathered Thursday for the funeral for Amir Locke that the 22-year-old Black man who was shot by Minneapolis police as they served a no-knock search warrant had done nothing wrong.

“Amir was not guilty of anything but being young and Black in America,” Sharpton said.

Other speakers at Locke’s funeral at Shiloh Temple International Ministries condemned police for the events that led to Locke’s killing, as they remembered Locke and other Black people who have died in encounters with police.

Sharpton said if Minneapolis had passed a ban on no-knock warrants “we wouldn’t be at a funeral this morning.”

Sharpton also referenced Black History Month and talked about slavery, detailing how slaves had their names taken away from them and were forced to take the names of their masters. He said Black people for too long have been seen as “nameless suspects.”

“Enough is enough. We are no longer going to be your nameless suspects,” Sharpton said, as the crowed applauded.

Before Sharpton spoke, congregants were prompted to “Say his name.” They responded: “Amir Locke.”

Locke’s aunt, Linda Tyler, denounced racism in policing and demanded that officers stop talking about the need for more training, and instead start using de-escalation techniques on white and Black people alike.

“If it is something you simply cannot do, we just ask that you resign today instead of resigning another brother or sister to her grave,” she said. She also said she doesn’t want to hear about how policing is a difficult job.

“If you think being a police officer is a difficult profession, try to be a Black man,” she said, as the crowd erupted in cheers.

A large portrait of Locke was displayed at the front of the church, with a white casket topped with roses and bouquets of flowers nearby. Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter were among those in attendance.

Locke’s death has provoked an outcry against no-knock warrants, with a push by his family and others to ban them in Minnesota and beyond.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who has come under scrutiny for the city’s use of such warrants, and Minneapolis Interim Police Chief Amelia Huffman did not attend. Shiloh Temple Bishop Richard Howell Jr. told the Star Tribune that Frey would not attend without an invitation from the family.

As the service began, hundreds of people sang the hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before Howell led the church in prayer. Members of the Grammy Award-winning group Sounds of Blackness also performed.

The service was held in the same church where Daunte Wright was remembered after he was killed by a suburban Minneapolis police officer in April. Sharpton, while presiding over Wright’s funeral, decried “the stench of police brutality.”

Locke was shot by a SWAT team member shortly before 7 a.m. on Feb. 2 as officers served a search warrant in a St. Paul homicide case. Body camera video shows at least four officers using a key to quietly enter the downtown apartment where he was staying, then shouting their presence. The video shows Locke, wrapped in a comforter, stirring and holding a handgun right before an officer shot him.

Locke wasn’t named in the warrant and did not live at the apartment. Family members called his killing an “execution,” noting the video shows an officer kicking the sofa, and suggested Locke was startled awake and disoriented. They have also pushed back against police saying Locke was shot after he pointed his gun at officers.

Frey has imposed a moratorium on such warrants while the city reexamines its policy. The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating Locke’s shooting.

Snoop Dogg Establishes Death Row As First NFT Label

As announced on Clubhouse, Death Row Records will become an NFT label. This will make Death Row Records the first major label to join the metaverse.

By Brooks Welch

Earlier this month, rapper and entrepreneur Snoop Dogg acquired Death Row Records – the label that gave him his start. As announced on Clubhouse, Death Row Records will become an NFT label. This will make Death Row Records the first major label to join the metaverse.

According to BET, Suge Knight’s son, Suge Jacob Knight, is thrilled with Snoop Dogg owning the label. He feels it’s a win for the West Coast. “Hopefully, now we can start winning. We lost Nipsey [Hussle], we lost Kobe [Bryant], we lost a lot of things,” Knight expressed.

Death Row Records was founded by Dr. Dre, producer and former member of NWA, and Marion “Suge” Knight in the 1990s. The label’s stars were Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. Dre and Snoop Dogg reunited for a performance at the recent 2022 Super Bowl.

According to Forbes, NFT stands for “non-fungible token.” They are digital assets that represent real-world objects like art, music, in-game items, and videos. NFTs have been in existence since 2014, however they’ve grown in popularity as a way to sell artwork. Working artists have found success in this industry of NFTs. NFTs create digital scarcity, which makes artwork more valuable. Cryptocurrency (digital currency) is often mentioned in the same conversation as NFTs.

The term “metaverse” refers to the network of 3D virtual worlds. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has brought this concept to the mainstream.

George Floyd Federal Trial Well-Underway

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Testifies In Floyd Civil Rights Case

(Minneapolis, MN) — A former Minneapolis police officer is taking the stand in the George Floyd civil rights trial. Tou Thao detailed his upbringing and his path to becoming a police officer. He testified he was taught to restrain suspects using his knee as leverage and was never told this was an improper method. Thao said he heard Floyd say “I can’t breath,” but that was something regularly said after the death of Eric Garner in New York in 2014. He added he assumed “they were taking care of him” and that he had “a different role to play” and wasn’t checking on Floyd. Thao is one of three former cops charged with not trying to save Floyd’s life as Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck, ultimately killing him.

Sandy Hook Families Settle $73M Suit with Gunmaker

(Tuesday, February 15, 2022) – Nine families of of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre have reportedely agreed to a $73 million settlement with gun manufacturer Remington.

The families filed suit against Remington, maker of the Bushmaster AR-15.   That was the weapon used in the 2012 killing spree that left  20 first graders and six educators dead.

The families and a survivor of the shooting sued Remington in 2015, arguing Remington should have never sold such a dangerous weapon to the  public.  The Connecticut civil court case focused on how the firearm was marketed, alleging it targeted younger at-risk males in marketing and product placement in violent video games.

After murdering his mother at their home, 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut before taking his own life.  It was one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ Reboot Premiere, Mixed Reactions

‘Bel Air’, the dramatic reboot of ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, premiered on Peacock with three episodes airing after the Super Bowl. The premiere was met with mixed feedback from audiences versus critics.

The language and risque themes take some adjusting for some audience members, however the Guardian’s critique was a stark contrast from the delight of fans.

The series has large shoes to fill and high expectations. As a cultural phenomenon for Black audiences, it’s understandable why there’s apprehension.

Reactions from original cast members were scarce, only Will Smith, producer of ‘Bel Air‘ and Joseph Marcell, who plays Geoffrey the Butler on the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, attended the premiere.

Audiences may feel more connected to the reboot if they knew the story behind its conception. As written in Will Smith’s YouTube caption, “3 years ago, my guy Morgan Cooper [Los Angeles based writer and director] uploaded his fan trailer to YouTube, showing how he envisioned the Fresh Prince as a drama. Now, here is the first full look at his retelling of the story that’s always been so close to my heart.”

‘Bel Air’ is streaming exclusively on Peacock. New episodes premiering every Thursday.

Carnegie to Host Two Month Afrofuturism Festival

It’s Black History Month, but some may argue it’s Black Future Month. Carnegie Hall is hosting a two-month Afrofuturism Festival from mid February to early April.

By Brooks Welch

It’s Black History Month, but some may argue it’s Black Future Month.

Carnegie Hall is hosting a two-month Afrofuturism Festival from mid February to early April. Afrofuturism is a concept simplified on Carnegie’s website as “an ever-expansive aesthetic and practice—where music, visual arts, science fiction, and technology intersect to imagine alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures.” Artists like Sun Ra Arkestra (performers at the festival), Parliament Funkadelic, Janelle Monae, and Solange Knowles have made contributions to the concept. Films like the 1982 feature ‘Brother from Another Planet’ and Marvel’s 2018 ‘Black Panther’ have also pushed Afrofuturism forward. The festival’s curational council is made of five Black Afrofuturism experts. The festival will consist of  over 80 events with over 70 partners to pull off the celebration of astro-Blackness.

The two-month citywide Afrofuturism Festival begins on February 15th, ending April 10th.

DC Mayor Lifts Mask Mandate

Masks will still be required in various places including schools and healthcare facilities.

(Washington, DC) — DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the indoor mask requirement for many public spaces including restaurants, bars, and gyms will go away March 1st. She joins multiple Democratic governors across the country who have announced mask mandates will go away as cases of the Omicron variant subside.

Passenger Tries To Enter Cockpit And Open Exit Door In Flight To DC

A flight from LA to DC made an emergency landing after a passenger attempted to break into the planes cockpit, as well as open a door to the aircraft while it was in the air.

An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., made a rapid emergency landing in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday afternoon after an unruly passenger tried to break into the cockpit and then attempted to open an exit door, witnesses said.

The passenger was subdued by crew members and other passengers. He was taken into custody after the flight landed.  In a statement, American Airlines said the flight, American Airlines Flight 1775, landed safely in Kansas City, where law enforcement officials met the plane. Charles A. Dayoub, an F.B.I. special agent in charge in Kansas City, said in a statement that the passenger was taken into custody after “interfering with the flight crew.”

Stacy Day, a spokeswoman for the airline, said that the passenger was “ultimately subdued by our crew and with the help of other passengers.”

The man at the center of the altercation, who appeared to be middle-aged, seemed distraught and paranoid, Mr. Rojas said. Earlier in the flight, he added, others saw the passenger pace the aisles.

“When I went up, it looked like the guy was trying to open the exterior door of the plane to the outside,” Mr. Rojas said. “So we were kind of keeping him from doing that and just trying to subdue him and make sure that he was taken down and everybody was OK.”

Mouaz Moustafa, a passenger from Washington, described a chaotic scene as the plane started descending into Kansas City without warning after the struggle with the passenger.

He said the man tried to get into the cockpit and then tried to exit via the main door before he was held down by several passengers.

“A flight attendant ran to the back of the plane and got the coffee pot and continues to bash the guy on the head,” Mr. Moustafa said in an interview as the plane was being held on the tarmac. The man was “bleeding profusely,” he added.  “I honestly thought today I might die,” he said.

Ultimately, it took three flight attendants and three passengers, including Mr. Rojas, to restrain the man, move him to the floor and then bind his hands and ankles with tape and zip ties provided by the flight attendants, Mr. Rojas said. The passenger remained on the floor for about 15 minutes until the plane landed and the authorities collected him, Mr. Rojas said.

As Mr. Moustafa, 37, was being interviewed by phone from his seat, the pilot came by and talked to the passengers about how the man had tried and failed to open the cockpit door.

Disturbances on flights have surged during the coronavirus pandemic, and many of the incidents have involved passengers who disagree with mask mandates.

Last year, the Federal Aviation Administration conducted more than 1,000 investigations of unruly passengers — more than in the previous seven years combined.

Karen Maria Alston, who lives in Washington, said she was sitting in the 17th row of the plane watching the movie “Dune” when she saw some men rush into the first-class section. She was not able to see what was happening, she said, but the commotion and the plane’s ensuing descent were frightening and “extremely stressful.”

“I need a drink and I am so thankful,” Ms. Alston said in a text message after the plane landed in Kansas City.

Then, told to disembark, the passengers waited for about three hours in the Kansas City airport, unwinding from their tense shared experience and celebrating the three passengers who intervened.

Mr. Rojas and other passengers huddled around a little television by a bar, unwinding and watching the Super Bowl, “just making the best out of the situation,” he said.

Three hours later, they were back on the plane headed to Washington.

Prosecutors Set To Rest Case In Trial Of Minneapolis Police Officers

Prosecutors in the trial of Minneapolis police officers accused of violating George Floyd’s civil rights will reportedly rest their case today.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — After nearly three weeks of testimony, federal prosecutors planned to rest their case Monday against three former Minneapolis police officers who are charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights.

Once the prosecution rests in the trial of J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, defense attorneys will start presenting their witnesses. The attorney for Lane has said his client will testify. Attorneys for Thao and Kueng haven’t said if they will.

The officers are charged with violating Floyd’s constitutional rights while acting under government authority. All three are accused of depriving Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, of medical care while he was handcuffed, facedown as Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee onto Floyd’s neck for 9 1/2 minutes. Kueng, who is Black, knelt on Floyd’s back; Lane, who is white, held down his legs; and Thao, who is Hmong American, kept bystanders back.

Kueng and Thao are also accused of failing to intervene to stop the May 25, 2020, killing, which triggered protests worldwide and a reexamination of racism and policing.

The charges allege that the officers’ actions resulted in Floyd’s death.

Prosecutors began presenting their case on Jan. 24. The trial has included testimony from bystanders, doctors, police officers, an FBI agent and others. Prosecutors also have played bystander and body camera videos that show Floyd being restrained and eventually becoming motionless before being put into an ambulance.

Testimony has included information about police training, and what the officers should have known about their duty to intervene and their responsibility to provide Floyd with medical care.

Despite efforts to keep the case on track, Judge Paul Magnuson ordered a three-day pause after one of the defendants tested positive for COVID-19.

One of the prosecution’s key arguments has been that the officers were trained to provide medical aid in emergencies, and that Floyd’s situation had become so serious that even bystanders, including children with no medical training, knew something was wrong.

On Friday, Alyssa Funari testified that when she saw three officers on top of a man in the street, she parked her car and started recording because she had a “gut feeling” something was wrong.

“I instantly knew that he was in distress. … He was moving, making facial expressions that he was in pain,” said Funari, who was 17 at the time and is now 19. “He was telling us that he was in pain.”

“I observed that over time he was slowly being less vocal and he was closing his eyes,” she added. “He wasn’t able to tell us that he was in pain anymore. He was just accepting it.”

Prosecutors also showed snippets of bystander and police video with timelines and transcripts as Matthew Vogel, an FBI special agent, described the materials. The timelines and transcripts were meant to help jurors sort out the sometimes confusing videos that show a chaotic scene from different angles and capture different pieces of the officers’ conversations amid a noisy environment.

Chauvin, who is white, was convicted of murder and manslaughter in state court last year and later pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights charge.

Lane, Kueng and Thao also face a separate state trial in June on charges alleging that they aided and abetted murder and manslaughter.

9 Ways For Singles To Celebrate Valentine’s Day

By Brooks Welch

What did Whitney say? “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.” If you’re happily, bitterly, or couldn’t-care-less-ly single this Valentine’s Day, here’s a few ways to spend the day.

9 Ways For Singles To Celebrate Valentine’s Day

1. Galentine’s Day

A fun go to that’s guaranteed to be a blast with your girlfriends. There’s something about sweet, sparkling drinks with cookies and therapeutic conversations that always refresh your soul.

2. Dive into Black History

Sure, February 14th is Valentine’s Day. But, it’s also the 14th day of Black History Month. Choose your area of passion (i.e. film, music, science, or sports) and learn more about it. Watch a documentary or a classic Black film. Listen to the obscure, deep cuts of a new Black artist. Spend the day feeling Black and proud.

3. Have a day of firsts

Have you ever tried Pho? What about pottery making? Did you see the new art exhibit at your local museum? If you answered no to all of these, it sounds like an opportunity for an adventurous day.

4. Have a day of favorites

Where do you like to be? What music do you love listening to? What food are you craving? What is your comfort movie? Knowing what you love and what you’re not a fan of solidifies your individuality. Do you know yourself well enough to spend the whole day smiling?

5. Be a hopeless romantic

This is for the singles who would rather be in a relationship – no judgment here. How does your dream partner dress? What movie scenes do you want to recreate with them? Church or outdoor venue for the wedding? Have a blast daydreaming and pinning white dresses to your Pinterest board.

6. Deep clean your space

Your space is often a reflection of your mental health. Where can you tidy up some clutter? Does the shirt you never wear really “spark joy?” Turn on Tidying Up With Marie Kondo or The Home Edit on Netflix and do some early spring cleaning. Taking care of what you have shows gratitude.

7. Work on a passion project

What do you wish existed in the world? Get started on making it a reality! Don’t let thoughts of self doubt keep you from seeing your dream come true. It’s absolutely possible. If you spend the day working on your passion, you’ll get lost in your zone of genius and get a boost of optimism for your future.

8. Get clear on your goals

If the idea of goal-setting sounds daunting to you ever since March 2020 (the shock of COVID-19’s impact), you’re not alone. However, if you walk without a sense of direction, you’ll end up in circles. If setting goals for the year or next 5 years is overwhelming, what would you like to achieve in March. You can do it.

9. Treat it like any other day

This is for the singles who couldn’t care less. You have your routine, you know what you do on any other Monday and you’re sticking to it… you might have one piece of chocolate, though.

Whether you plan to be a hopeless romantic, Black historian, or exactly who you are any day, we at WHUR wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Super Bowl 56

Are you really excited about the game?

Are you ready for some football? Super Bowl 56 is just two days away and there’s a lot of hype about… the halftime show and the commercials.  But what about the game?  Are you really excited about the Bengals and the Rams going head to head?

FDA Postponing Vaccine Meeting Due To “New Data”

. The trial for children between six months and four-years-old is ongoing.

(Silver Spring, MD) — The FDA is postponing a meeting that was supposed to go over data from trials of COVID vaccines in young kids. The agency said it needed more time to consider new data and to allow for transparent “public discussion” as they mull over approval for the vaccines. This comes after Pfizer and BioNTech delayed their request for the FDA to authorize the vaccine for children under five-years-old. The trial for children between six months and four-years-old is ongoing, with data being shared with the FDA as it progresses.

Docuseries Reveals New Information About Unsolved Death of Keith Warren

NEW YORK – discovery+, the definitive non-fiction, real life subscription streaming service, and NowThis, today announced a new original limited docuseries Uprooted, that tells the injustice of the 1986 unsolved hanging death of a 19-year-old Black man, Keith Warren, in Silver Spring, Maryland. All episodes will stream Friday, February 18 on discovery+.

Never thoroughly investigated, Keith Warren’s sister Sherri has spent 35 years seeking the truth about what happened to her brother. Fighting systemic corruption at every turn, her end goal is to change Keith’s death certificate to reflect the truth. Featuring interviews with Keith Warren’s friends and family as well as both active and retired law enforcement, forensic experts, eyewitnesses and private investigators, Uprooted includes never-before-reported support for the probability Keith Warren did not die by suicide.

Uprooted will be accompanied by a six-part podcast hosted by Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza. Listeners will hear from academics, activists, artists, and culture critics like actor and activist Kendrick Sampson, Color of Change President Rashad Robinson, activist Linda Sarsour, sociologist Nancy Wang-Yuen, Uprooted director Avril Z. Speaks and more, to dive deeper into inequitable systems that influenced the outcome of Keith’s case and the impact that remains today. The series will peel back the layers and shed light on the criminal investigations, police corruption, media accountability, the “perfect victim,” and generational trauma.

“This is a story that needs to be heard by everyone,” said Lisa Holme, Group SVP of Content and Commercial Strategy for Discovery. “Our partners at NowThis did an incredible job uncovering new information and gaining access to those most intimately involved in the case. It is a story about the fight against injustice and corruption that resonates as much today as when it first occurred.”

“This docuseries is the culmination of a years-long effort at NowThis to shed light on the true circumstances behind Keith Warren’s tragic death, and amplify the voice of his sister Sherri who has fought tirelessly for justice,” said Matt McDonough, Executive Producer of NowThis Originals. “We’re proud to partner with Discovery to tell this important story that has gone unseen and unheard, and to continue to illuminate vital issues like corruption and racial injustice – issues with which our audience is deeply engaged.”
