Del. Jay Walker Talks About His New Financial Literacy Bill for Students

Delegate Walker said it took him almost 8 years to get the bill through both the state House and Senate.

Delegate Jay Walker joined me this morning to talk the passage of his financial education bill for students in Prince George’s County. He said it’s a start and there are still a lot of additional things that he wants to add to the program. Right now it is not required throughout the county or states. The program that will deal with compound interest, CD’s, credit card and loan debt will be offered at a few schools in the county.

Delegate Walker said it took him almost 8 years to get the bill through both the state House and Senate. He said if you want your child’s school to offer it you need to contact your school board and Senator and let them know. Montgomery and Howard County School have it as a requirement for students to graduate. Prince George’s County does not but he is working on that changing. His long term goal is that all schools in the state make that a requirement.

The Synopsis of HB371 (Financial Literacy)
Requiring the State Board of Education to develop curriculum content for a half-semester-long course in financial literacy; requiring each county board of education to implement the financial literacy curriculum content developed by the State Board in certain high schools; and requiring students to complete a certain course in order to graduate from high school.

Supreme Court Allows Lawsuit Over iPhone Apps

Apple keeps 30% of the sales price, where it is set, Kavanaugh said in a summary he read from the bench. “In other words, Apple as retailer pockets a 30% commission on every app sale,” said Kavanaugh, one of President Donald Trump’s two high court appointees.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that consumers can pursue an antitrust lawsuit that claims Apple has unfairly monopolized the market for the sale of iPhone apps.

New Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the court’s four liberals in rejecting a plea from Cupertino, California-based Apple to end the lawsuit over the 30% commission the company charges software developers whose more than 2 million apps are sold through the App Store.

iPhone users who must purchase software for their smartphones exclusively through Apple’s App Store filed the suit.

Apple keeps 30% of the sales price, where it is set, Kavanaugh said in a summary he read from the bench. “In other words, Apple as retailer pockets a 30% commission on every app sale,” said Kavanaugh, one of President Donald Trump’s two high court appointees.

That was enough to persuade that at this early stage of the legal fight, the lawsuit can continue, he said.

Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s other pick, wrote a dissent for four conservative justices. The consumers’ complaint against Apple is the kind of case earlier high court rulings said was not allowed under federal laws that prohibit unfair control of a market, Gorsuch wrote.

Apple had argued it’s merely a pipeline between app developers and consumers, and that iPhone users have no claims against Apple under antitrust law.

The suit could force Apple to cut the commission it charges software developers. A judge could triple the compensation to consumers under antitrust law if Apple ultimately loses the suit.

There has been exponential growth in the availability of apps since Apple created the App Store in 2008 with 500 choices.

″‘There’s an app for that’ has become part of the 21st-century American lexicon,” Kavanaugh said.

The case is Apple Inc. v Pepper, 17-204.

Legendary Actress And Singer Doris Day Dead At 97

“Day had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death,” the foundation said in a statement. It said she requested “no funeral or memorial service and no grave marker.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Doris Day, the sunny blond actress and singer whose frothy comedic roles opposite the likes of Rock Hudson made her one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the 1950s and ’60s and a symbol of wholesome American womanhood, died Monday. She was 97.

In recent years, Day had been an animal rights advocate and her Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed her death at her Carmel Valley, California, home. The foundation said she was surrounded by close friends.

“Day had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death,” the foundation said in a statement. It said she requested “no funeral or memorial service and no grave marker.”

With her lilting contralto, wholesome beauty and glowing smile, Day was a top box-office draw and recording artist known for comedies such as “Pillow Talk” and “That Touch of Mink,” as well as songs like “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)” from the Alfred Hitchcock film “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”

Over time, she became more than a name above the title: Right down to her cheerful, alliterative stage name, she stood for a time of innocence and G-rated love, a parallel world to her contemporary Marilyn Monroe. The running joke, attributed to both Groucho Marx and actor-composer Oscar Levant, was that they had known Day “before she was a virgin.”

Day herself was no Doris Day, by choice and by hard luck.

In her Oscar-nominated role in 1959′s “Pillow Talk,” the first of three films with Hudson, she proudly caught up with what she called “the contemporary in me.” Her 1976 tell-all book, “Doris Day: Her Own Story,” chronicled her money troubles and three failed marriages.

“I have the unfortunate reputation of being Miss Goody Two-Shoes, America’s Virgin, and all that, so I’m afraid it’s going to shock some people for me to say this, but I staunchly believe no two people should get married until they have lived together,” she wrote.

Day was given a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, as George W. Bush declared it “a good day for America when Doris Marianne von Kappelhoff of Evanston, Ohio decided to become an entertainer.”

Although mostly retired from show business since the 1980s, she still had enough of a following that a 2011 collection of previously unreleased songs, “My Heart,” hit the top 10 in the United Kingdom. The same year, she received a lifetime achievement honor from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Designer Stella McCartney, an animal rights advocate, responded to Day’s death Monday by tweeting: “The one, the only, the woman who inspired so much of what I do… Doris Day I love you, my calamity Jane. An iconic woman who I was hugely honoured to meet and share precious moments with. Rest in peace.”

Playwright Paul Rudnick tweeted in part, “Doris Day was kind and decent, onscreen and off; she maintained her friendship with Rock Hudson after his AIDS diagnosis, in a climate of fear and abandonment — one of his last appearances was on a TV show with her.”

Born to a music teacher and a housewife in Cincinnati, Day dreamed of a dance career but at age 12 broke her leg badly when a car in which she was traveling was hit by a train. Listening to the radio while recuperating, she began singing along with Ella Fitzgerald, “trying to catch the subtle ways she shaded her voice, the casual yet clean way she sang the words.”

Day began singing at a Cincinnati radio station, then a nightclub, then in New York. A bandleader changed her name to Day after the song “Day after Day” to fit it on a marquee.

A marriage at 17 to trombonist Al Jorden ended when, she said, he beat her when she was eight months pregnant. She gave birth to her son, Terry, in early 1942. Her second marriage also was short-lived. She returned to Les Brown’s band after the first marriage broke up.

Her Hollywood career began after she sang at a Hollywood party in 1947. After early stardom as a band singer and a stint at Warner Bros., Day won the best notices of her career with 1955′s “Love Me or Leave Me,” the story of songstress Ruth Etting and her gangster husband-manager. She followed with Hitchcock’s “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” starring with James Stewart as an innocent couple ensnared in an international assassination plot. She sang “Que Sera, Sera” just as the story reached its climax. The 1958 comedy “Teacher’s Pet” paired her with an aging Clark Gable.

But she found her greatest success in slick, stylish sex comedies, beginning with “Pillow Talk.” She and Hudson played two New Yorkers who shared a telephone party line. She followed with “The Thrill of It All,” playing a housewife who gains fame as a TV pitchwoman to the chagrin of obstetrician husband James Garner.

The nation’s theater owners voted her the top moneymaking star in 1960, 1962, 1963 and 1964.

Her first singing hit was the 1945 smash “Sentimental Journey,” when she was barely in her 20s. Among the other songs she made famous were “Everybody Loves a Lover,” ″Secret Love,” and “It’s Magic,” a song from her first film, “Romance on the High Seas.”

Critic Gary Giddins called her “the coolest and sexiest female singer of slow-ballads in movie history.”

“Romance on the High Seas” had been designed for Judy Garland, then Betty Hutton. Both bowed out, and Day, recommended by songwriters Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne, won the role. Warner Bros. cashed in on its new star with a series of musicals, including “Calamity Jane,” ″My Dream Is Yours,” ″Tea for Two” and “Lullaby of Broadway.” Her dramas included “Young Man with a Horn,” with Kirk Douglas and Lauren Bacall, and “Storm Warning,” with Ronald Reagan and Ginger Rogers.

Her last film was “With Six You Get Eggroll,” a 1968 comedy about a widow and a widower who blend families.

“For those of us in my generation, Doris Day was synonymous with Hollywood icon,” actor George Takei said on Twitter Monday.

In the 1960s, Day discovered that failed investments by her third husband, Martin Melcher, left her deeply in debt. She eventually won a multimillion-dollar judgment against their lawyer.

With movies trending for more explicit sex, she turned to television to recoup her finances. “The Doris Day Show” was a moderate success in its 1966-1973 run on CBS.

Day had married Melcher, who worked in her agent’s office, in 1951. He became her manager, and her son took his name. In most of the films following “Pillow Talk,” Melcher was listed as co-producer. Melcher died in 1969.

In her autobiography, Day recalled her son telling her the $20 million she had earned had vanished and she owed around $450,000, mostly for taxes. Terry Melcher, who died in 2004, became a songwriter and record producer, working with such stars as the Beach Boys. He was also famous for an aspiring musician he turned down, Charles Manson. When Manson and his followers embarked on their murderous rampage in 1969, they headed for a house once owned by Melcher, and instead came upon actress Sharon Tate and some visitors, all of whom were killed.

Day married a fourth time at age 52, to businessman Barry Comden in 1976.

Her wholesome image was referenced in the song “I’m Sandra Dee” in the 1971 musical “Grease,” which included the lyrics: “Watch it, hey, I’m Doris Day/ I was not brought up that way/ Won’t come across/ Even Rock Hudson lost/ His heart to Doris Day.”

“The great Doris Day left us and took a piece of the sun with her,” actress Goldie Hawn tweeted Monday. “She brighten our lives and lived out her life with dignity. May she rest peacefully.”

‘Empire’ To Get 1 More Season

“We are turning the final season of ‘Empire’ into a large television event,” Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier told a teleconference Monday. “One of the great benefits of announcing a final season is that you actually allow the fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.”

NEW YORK (AP) — “Empire” will return for its final season this fall on Fox — with Jussie Smollett a question mark — and should count itself lucky.

Fox, the lowest-rated network among the big four broadcasters, is hitting the reset button for the 2019-20 season by cancelling eight shows and adding 10 new ones.

“Empire” companion drama “Star” is among the goners as the network makes room for an eclectic mix of wrestling, two new animated comedies and a “9-1-1” spinoff starring Rob Lowe.

“We are turning the final season of ‘Empire’ into a large television event,” Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier told a teleconference Monday. “One of the great benefits of announcing a final season is that you actually allow the fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.”

Collier dodged questions about Smollett’s future with the show after the actor was accused of staging an attack in which he said two masked men beat him, hurled racist and homophobic slurs at him, doused him with a chemical substance and put a rope around his neck. Criminal charges were dropped but the uproar has yet to subside, making Smollett a continued publicity liability for Fox.

When pressed, Collier said there is an option to include him in the series “but at this point we have no plans for that.”

As for “Star,” which had been paired on the schedule with “Empire,” it fell victim to Fox’s prime-time schedule, which is an hour shorter per night than the other networks, Collier said. The network also wanted to give “Empire” a strong send-off by pairing it with returning medical drama “The Resident,” he said.

US Measles Topping 800 For Year

A total of 839 cases were reported as of last week. That’s the most since 1994, when 963 were reported for the entire year.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials say this year’s count of measles cases has surpassed 800, a growing tally that is already the nation’s highest in 25 years.

A total of 839 cases were reported as of last week. That’s the most since 1994, when 963 were reported for the entire year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the latest numbers Monday.

In all, 23 states have reported cases this year. The vast majority of illnesses have been in New York — most of them among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities.

That pattern continued last week, with most of the 75 new cases coming from New York.

Amazon Offers To Help Employees Start Delivery Business

Amazon says it will cover up to $10,000 in startup costs for employees who are accepted into the program and leave their jobs. The company says it will also pay them three months’ worth of their salary.

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon, which is racing to deliver packages faster, is turning to its employees with a proposition: Quit your job and we’ll help you start a business delivering Amazon packages.

The offer, announced Monday, comes as Amazon seeks to speed up its shipping time from two days to one for its Prime members. The company sees the new incentive as a way to get more packages delivered to shoppers’ doorsteps faster.

Amazon says it will cover up to $10,000 in startup costs for employees who are accepted into the program and leave their jobs. The company says it will also pay them three months’ worth of their salary.

The offer is open to most part-time and full-time Amazon employees, including warehouse workers who pack and ship orders. Whole Foods employees are not eligible to receive the new incentives.

Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. declined to say how many employees it expects to take them up on the offer.

The new employee incentive is part of a program Amazon started a year ago that let anyone apply to launch an independent Amazon delivery business and provided $10,000 in reimbursements to military veterans.

The program’s expansion is part of the company’s plan to control more of its deliveries on its own, rather than rely on UPS, the post office and other carriers. Startup costs start at $10,000 and contractors that participate are able to lease blue vans with the Amazon smile logo stamped on the side.

Overall, more than 200 Amazon delivery businesses have been created since it launched the program last June, said John Felton, Amazon’s vice president of global delivery services.

One of them is run Milton Collier, a freight broker who started his business in Atlanta about eight months ago. Since then, it has grown to 120 employees with a fleet of 50 vans that can handle up to 200 delivery stops in a day. It has already been preparing for the one-day shipping switch by hiring more people.

“We’re ready,” says Collier.

HU Celebrates 151st Commencement Awarding Over 2,300 Degrees

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 11, 2019) – Today, Howard University marked its 151st Commencement Convocation awarding more than 2,000 degrees, including some 300 master’s degrees and over 100 Ph.Ds.  Additionally, more than 400 students received professional degrees in law, medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.

During the ceremony, Kasim Reed, former Atlanta mayor and noted Howard alumnus and trustee emeritus, lauded his alma mater as a “dream factory for our people.”

“Howard was built to be a dream factory for a people – a place where you can come and be a pastor, a nurse, a teacher, an engineer, a social worker, a physician, a scientist a lawyer, a place where if you had the grit and the toughness and the intellect then your lesson plan could become a dream plan, and that’s what’s happening today,” Reed told the assembled graduates and their families.

Reed served two terms as the 59th mayor of the city of Atlanta from 2010 to 2018. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees and an honorary Doctor of Laws from Howard University. He applauded the Class of 2019 for their decision to become a part of Howard’s rich legacy of leaders.

“We are the place where if you are an African American lawyer, there is a one-third chance you graduated from Howard.  If you are an African American physician, there is a one-fifth chance that you went to Howard.  We are a place that has a unique ability to take raw talent, energy, and grit and weave it into a beautiful mosaic. In fact, I am looking at it right now,” said Reed.

He encouraged the new graduates to get busy making their dreams a reality without delay.“Take full advantage of your physical capacity.  I know that as you sit there with your future ahead of you, you feel like you have all  the time in the world.  You don’t,” Reed stated emphatically. “Excellence, greatness, and passion are where the grind is.  Do not squander your physical capacity to work all day and work all night when needed.”

In total, Howard University awarded 2,293 degrees.  That number includes 309 master’s degrees, and 114 Ph.Ds. The 2019 graduates represent 42 states and 43 countries; 194 graduates are from the District of Columbia.  The youngest graduates are 20 years old (receiving bachelor’s degrees in political science, finance, and biology). The oldest graduate is 72 year and received a doctor of education degrees. Sixty-seven percent of the total 2019 graduates were women.

This year’s Commencement Convocation marks the commemoration of Howard University’s 151st graduating class. Howard University President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick said the ceremony was made possible because of “countless and fearless leaders” in the past who pursued justice, equality and education.  “Howard University continues to be a national treasure, not only because of our legacy, but also because of what is taking place in our country today right now,” Dr. Frederick said. “Our core values of excellence, leadership, truth and service are at the center of Howard’s faithfulness to our primary task – to develop scholars and professionals who drive change while engaging in scholarship that provides solutions to contemporary global problems.”

Dr. Frederick said this weekend marked 24 years since his own graduation from the Howard University College of Medicine. Howard University is America’s No. 1 institution for producing Black applicants to U.S. medical schools.  “Howard University was the only place in the world where I could fulfill my dreams,” he said. “No one at Howard ever questioned my capacity or my abilities, and this is the HBCU difference. I think this is why HBCUs are more critical today than ever before.”

Among the excited graduates stood Olumide Olulade, who graduated first in his class in the College of Medicine.  Olulade followed the path to Howard through the example of family members. His brother graduated with a Howard medical degree in 2008. His mother graduated from the Howard University College of Pharmacy in the class of 1977. On this Mother’s Day weekend, he was able to give his mother the gift of his graduation. He plans to pursue a career in interventional radiology.

“My mother is the reason I went to medical school. When I finished my Ph.D. and was working as a researcher, she got sick. I realized in that moment that I couldn’t help her at all,” said Olulade, who describes that moment as a turning point. “I decided that I wanted to be able to be at the bedside helping people who get sick. I think research is amazing, but I realized I wanted to be directly engaged in care.”

During the ceremony, Howard University bestowed honorary degrees upon distinguished leaders in the fields of finance, higher education and dentistry. The recipients include: First Data Chairman and CEO Frank Bisignano, honorary Doctor of Humane Letters; Xavier University of Louisiana President Emeritus Norman C. Francis, J.D., honorary Doctor of Humane Letters; Senior Scholar-in-Residence Emerita, Office of the President and CEO of the American Dental Education Association Jeanne C. Sinkford, D.D.S., Ph.D., honorary Doctor of Science; and Historian and former Howard University Provost Michael R. Winston, Ph.D., honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Reed was awarded the Presidential Medal of Achievement.

What Your Mother Doesn’t Know About You

What is it that your mother doesn’t know about you?

Mother’s Day weekend is upon us.  It can be poignant, exciting, emotional… even down right fun.  We’re asking a question that could help you define your relationship with your mother or give you pause when thinking back on what could have been.  What’s the one thing you’ve done… that you didn’t tell your mother about?  Would you tell her now?  Do you wish that you could?

House Won’t Hear From Mueller Next Week

Mueller won’t testify next week

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee says special counsel Robert Mueller won’t appear before his panel next week, despite the committee’s hope that Mueller would testify May 15.
New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler said Friday that negotiations continue with Mueller and the Justice Department about the testimony. He wouldn’t characterize those talks.
Nadler said he expects Mueller to appear, though the committee will subpoena him “if necessary.”
Democrats are clashing with the Justice Department over access to Mueller’s full report on the Trump-Russia investigation.
The Judiciary panel on Wednesday voted to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress after he defied the committee’s subpoena. The next step is a vote on the House floor.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Democrats could wait and combine several contempt resolutions into one package.

US Consumer Prices Rose 0.3% On Higher Gas, Housing Costs

Gas prices are moving higher, which will likely continue to lift inflation in the coming months. The average price of gas was $2.87 a gallon on Friday, according to AAA. That is 11 cents higher than a month earlier.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. consumer prices increased 0.3% in April, led by more expensive gasoline, rents and appliances.

The Labor Department said Friday that the consumer price index climbed 2% in the year ending in April. Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core prices increased 0.1% last month and 2.1% from a year ago.

The figures suggest inflation is mostly subdued, despite solid economic growth and rising wages, which typically push up prices. Federal Reserve policymakers took note of low inflation at their meeting last week but attributed it mostly to “transitory” factors.

A big increase in gasoline costs drove more than two-thirds of April’s price rise, while rents increased 0.4%. Food prices fell for the first time in nearly two years.

President Donald Trump has urged Powell to cut the Fed’s benchmark interest rate by up to a full percentage point because inflation remains low. Few economists agree that such a large cut is needed.

Still, most analysts say that with inflation so low, further rate hikes may not be necessary. The Fed has set an inflation target of 2% as a hedge against deflation. It monitors a different inflation gauge, which has shown an overall price increase of just 1.5% in the past year. The Fed’s preferred gauge has rarely hit 2% since the target was set more than six years ago.

Gas prices are moving higher, which will likely continue to lift inflation in the coming months. The average price of gas was $2.87 a gallon on Friday, according to AAA. That is 11 cents higher than a month earlier.

Americans are seeing the cost of other items decline, offsetting some of the price increase at the pump. Fruit and vegetable prices fell 0.9% in April, the government said, while meat, fish and egg prices slipped 0.2%.

Used car and truck prices dropped 1.3%, the third straight monthly decline, while clothing costs fell 0.8%.

Higher tariffs on Chinese imports, including fish, luggage, and handbags, may boost prices for many consumers in the coming weeks. The Trump administration on Friday lifted tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods to 25% from 10%.

Still, a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in February estimated that tariffs on China have so far had little overall impact on inflation.

The consumer price index has increased since last winter, which has eroded American’s inflation-adjusted wages a bit. Average hourly pay, adjusted for price changes, increased 1.2% in April from a year earlier. That’s down from a 1.9% annual gain in February.

Fairfax County Police say his real name is Steve Rossi. He was arrested last month and just posted bail on May 2nd. Rossi is charged with 10 counts of felony possession of child pornography.

The investigation began following a tip from an internet provider. A search of Rossi’s Reston home uncovered some 50 images.

Mr. Knick Knack has performed at such places at Reston Town Center, Market Common in Clerendon and Tysons Corner to name a few. Now officers say they have no evidence that he had any contact with the children in the video. Anyone with information should call police at 703-246-7800 or text a tip to “TIP187”

‘Power’ To Return In August For Its Final Season

50 inked an 8-figure deal with Starz back in 2017 to bring 3 more projects to life, and the contract runs through this September.

Say it ain’t so. “Power” is coming to an end. The hit show will premiere its sixth season this fall.

50 Cent took to Instagram to tell fans to relax because he has several projects in the works.

TMZ reports:

Sources close to production on the hit series tell TMZ … 50 wants the show to go out on top, because he’s seen too many other series run themselves into the ground. “Power” is still hugely successful as it enters its 6th season on Starz.

While there’s speculation that drama between Fiddy and Randall Emmett is behind the decision to pull the plug … we’re told that’s simply not the case, and there’s no lingering beef between the fellow executive producers.

You’ll recall … Fiddy’s character, Kanan Stark, died last season, and we’re told that’s no coincidence … because 50 wanted more time to get started working on other projects, including “Power” spin-offs, which are already being developed.

As we first told you … 50 inked an 8-figure deal with Starz back in 2017 to bring 3 more projects to life, and the contract runs through this September.

Bottom line … the final season of “Power” just got even more interesting.

Rosenstein Says Goodbye To DOJ

Justice Department Bids Farewell To Rosenstein

(Washington, DC) — The Justice Department is bidding farewell to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Rosenstein is moving on after overseeing most of the nearly two-year Russia investigation. Sixty-eight-percent of Republicans in Maryland would choose Trump, with eight-percent undecided. Hogan has been considering a run for the presidency in 2020, and even made a recent appearance in New Hampshire. His approval rating remains high at 76-percent.

R. Kelly Judgment Withdrawn After Lawyers Say He Can’t Read

“He’s not a deadbeat dad,” Kelly’s attorney Lisa Damico told reporters after Wednesday’s hearing, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. “All he wants to do is do right by his kids.”

CHICAGO (AP) — R. Kelly spent much of Wednesday in court, with his lawyer explaining to one judge that the singer didn’t respond to a lawsuit brought by one of his sexual abuse accusers because he is illiterate and with Kelly paying $62,000 in back child support during a second hearing.

At the first hearing, Judge Moira Johnson vacated a default judgment she made against Kelly after the singer failed to respond to a lawsuit brought by one of the four women he’s charged with sexually abusing. Johnson reinstated the lawsuit after one of Kelly’s attorneys explained that the singer was in jail when he was served with the lawsuit documents and that Kelly didn’t respond because he can’t read.

The second hearing, which pertained to child support, came weeks after the judge in that case ordered Kelly to jail after finding him in contempt of court for failing to pay $161,000 in back child support to his ex-wife, who is the mother of his three children. Kelly remained locked up for three days until he raised the back child support.

“He’s not a deadbeat dad,” Kelly’s attorney Lisa Damico told reporters after Wednesday’s hearing, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. “All he wants to do is do right by his kids.”

Kelly’s bookings for performances began drying up following the airing of a television documentary “Surviving R. Kelly.” That was weeks before his February arrest on charges accusing him of sexually abusing a woman and three girls over roughly a 10-year period starting in the late 1990s. But on Tuesday, one his attorneys told reporters that he was lining up performances for the Grammy award-winning R&B singer in Illinois and outside the state, and that he anticipated the judge approving requests to travel to make those appearances.

Kelly has pleaded not guilty to the sexual abuse charges and denied any wrongdoing.

Georgia Council member Looks At Resigning Following Racist Comment

Council Member Jim Cleveland he stated that he was against interracial marriage and that it was against his “Christian beliefs”

It’s a story of racism that for many is still unbelievable in this day and age. In a small Georgia town known as Hoschton. Pronounced (Hoosh-ton) one council member is considering stepping down following a racist comment he made.

Hoschton Council Member Jim Cleveland and the Mayor of Hoschton Theresa Kenerly are being pushed to resign. It all began when Mayor Kenerly the Atlanta Journal-Constitution uncovered that she had withheld the name of a candidate for office because he was black. Reportedly their documentation and witnesses that she told a fellow lawmaker that the town, which is predominately white (2,000 people) wasn’t ready for this.

Now fast forward while the Journal-Constitution was conducting an interview with City Council Member Jim Cleveland he stated that he was against interracial marriage and that it was against his “Christian beliefs” and then added that it made his “blood boil”. The comments that were printed sparked public outcry from lawmakers around the Atlanta area. Some residents who attended a city council meeting after the comment threatened to begin recall elections.

Council Member Cleveland said he has been told by some resident to stay and wait it out that he would be Ok. Cleveland says he is still looking at his options at this point.

UBER, LYFT Drivers Go On Strike

Rideshare drivers protest in DC and around the nation.

Some Uber and Lyft drivers in D.C. have gone on strike today. Stand De La Cruz, of the protest group Drive United, says there is an unfair balance between the drivers and the executives of rideshare companies.  The District is among several cities where drivers are protesting. The drivers are reportedly planning to turn off their apps at noon and keep them off until midnight. Drivers say the pay system has gone downhill from where the ride-sharing companies started. Some drivers are also considering an organized protest at National Airport.

George Clooney Hopes Media ‘Kinder’ To Meghan Markle

Clooney told The Associated Press Tuesday at the Hollywood premiere of his movie “Catch 22” that the media scrutiny will intensify now that she and Prince Harry are parents. The actor says the media coverage is part of being members of the royal family.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — George Clooney says the media should “be a little kinder” to Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, after she gave birth to a baby boy.

Clooney told The Associated Press Tuesday at the Hollywood premiere of his movie “Catch 22” that the media scrutiny will intensify now that she and Prince Harry are parents. The actor says the media coverage is part of being members of the royal family.

However, Clooney says the coverage steps “into a really dark place” when the media interviews people’s parents. He says “the press turned on them” and he thinks people should be kinder because “she’s a young woman who just had a baby.”

Clooney’s wife, Amal, attended the duchess’ baby shower and the Clooneys have vacationed with the royal couple.

Waters Teaches How To Be A ‘First’ And Succeed In Congress

“This is a new way and it’s a new day and it’s a new chair and I have the gavel at this point,” Waters said levelly.

WASHINGTON (AP) — She’s been called “Kerosene Maxine” and gaveled off the House floor for accusing Republican men of badgering women. She dismissed President Donald Trump and his allies as thugs and predicted his impeachment before he was sworn into office.

No one, Maxine Waters once observed, should be surprised by her. But after nearly three decades in Congress, the 80-year-old California lawmaker is in an eye-opening role as the highest-ranking African American woman in the country. She’s wielding the gavel of the bank-regulating Financial Services Committee with the power to investigate Trump where some say it counts most: his business dealings.

The role makes Waters a model for many, but notably for the outspoken freshmen Democrats who have drawn as much scrutiny — and as many threats — for what they’ve said as for the barriers they are breaking. Waters, known by some of them as “Auntie Maxine,” has been there. And her unique ascent offers lessons in how to balance activism with work and prudence.

″@RepMaxineWaters always tells it like it is like our favorite auntie,” tweeted Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, one of the first Muslim women in Congress. She, like Waters, called for Trump’s impeachment, though in more profane terms .

Waters has minced no words on her drive to see Trump formally charged by the House. She is leading one of six House committee investigations of Trump’s world, specifically into Deutsche Bank, the German asset management firm that has lent Trump’s real estate organization millions of dollars over the years. She said earlier this year that the bank is cooperating with requests for documents. But Trump last week launched a legal fight to block the banks from doing so, opening a new front in his battle against Congress.

Waters, the only woman and the only African American to hold that chairmanship, has offered instruction by example of how to survive as a “first” in the most diverse House in U.S. history.

“Her preparedness and her concentration on getting something done, and her ability to get along with us, allows her to get the policy done, too,” said House Oversight and Reform Committee Elijah Cummings, D-Md., whose panel is also investigating Trump. “She can fire folks up, but she also does her homework. She also has a game plan in the end.”

Tlaib and a dozen other Democratic freshmen on the panel had front row seats for what became a class in what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls “knowing your power.” When Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin complained about how long Waters was questioning him, she glared down from the dais.

“This is a new way and it’s a new day and it’s a new chair and I have the gavel at this point,” Waters said levelly.

Mnuchin suggested she drop the “gravel” and dismiss him. She did not. “Please do not instruct me as to how I’m to conduct this committee,” she said. Mnuchin departed when Waters was ready. He promised to come back if called.

That power moment happened, congressional veterans said, chiefly because Waters has earned clout up the leadership ladder and across the partisan aisle. So when Democrats took control of the House after the November 2018 elections, she had been in line for nearly five years for the top spot — and there was no quarrel over the promotion, Democrats said. That, despite Waters’ long feud with Trump, in which he branded her “low IQ” and she urged people to publicly shame members of his administration over its family detention policy at the U.S. border. He warned last July, ”’Be careful what you wish for Max!”

Chairmanship granted, Waters’ portfolio includes overseeing the government’s banking, housing and consumer protection agencies, as well as investigating Trump. On policy, she’s got the background, including helping write the Dodd-Frank Act, which imposed new oversight on the banking industry. Even on impeachment, she’s got experience, should the House ever proceed in that direction against Trump. Waters was one of President Bill Clinton’s staunchest supporters on the House Judiciary Committee when it anchored proceedings against him.

Waters also has been through the grinder of public scrutiny. In 2012, a House committee cleared her of wrongdoing following allegations she steered a $12 million federal bailout to a bank where her husband owned stock.

Throughout, Waters developed an approach that Republicans and Democrats describe as a balance between ferocious public advocacy for her constituencies and a down-to-business approach to deal making. And yes, compromise, including on a law she helped negotiate with House Republicans providing flood insurance to millions of Americans.

“People understand that she is fighting for them,” said Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, who served with Waters in the California State Assembly. Waters was in the State Assembly for 14 years before being elected to the House in 1990. “They feel confident that she has done everything in her power to get the best possible deal,” Roybal-Allard said.

A sense of humor inside Congress’ ivory tower helps, too.

“I have a picture of her hanging on my wall,” said Rep. Steve Chabot, a Republican from Ohio who sparred with Waters on the Clinton impeachment committee. It immortalizes a moment in which he told Waters that even though she’s not a lawyer, he’d call her to advocate for him if ever he got in trouble. “She laughed,” he recalled.

Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican and a member of Waters’ committee, said her calls for Trump’s impeachment make it unlikely she’ll get any Republican cooperation on that. But policy is something else.

“There’s different levels of Maxine. She really is a tough fighter,” King said, recalling a skirmish he had with her in 1994 in which she told him to “shut up” in a committee hearing and the fight spilled out onto the House floor. She was gaveled down for her “demeanor” and her words stricken from the record.

“On the other hand,” King added, “there’s the Maxine Waters who knows how to get things done, who knows how to make alliances, who can work with people in (banking) industry if she has to.”

No longer does anyone ask the leaders to answer for Waters’ words, as happens with some of the freshmen — Rep. Ilhan Omar, for example, for her remarks on Israel.

“She doesn’t care who she might offend,” said House Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., one of the other chairmen on the call who’s served alongside Waters in the House since she arrived. “She cares more about the policy and getting from A to B.”

Chappelle To Receive Mark Twain Prize For Humor

Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter called Chappelle “a hometown hero” and said his social commentary and body of work embody Twain’s statement that “against the assault of humor, nothing can stand.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Comedian Dave Chappelle has been chosen to receive this year’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

The 45-year-old Chappelle shot to international stardom through his Comedy Central program, “Chappelle’s Show,” which gleefully skewered racial stereotypes and hot-button societal issues. He later made headlines for walking away from a lucrative contract over creative differences.

Chappelle attended Washington’s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and his first hourlong comedy special was filmed in the nation’s capital.

Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter called Chappelle “a hometown hero” and said his social commentary and body of work embody Twain’s statement that “against the assault of humor, nothing can stand.”

Chappelle will be presented with the award in a star-studded ceremony on Oct. 29. The ceremony will be broadcast on television on Jan. 6, 2020.

Barack Obama’s Book Not Expected To Be Released In 2019

The former president and his wife, Michelle Obama, signed lucrative book deals in 2017. Mrs. Obama’s book was released last year and quickly became one of the most popular political memoirs in history, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Barack Obama’s post-White House memoir isn’t expected to be released this year, setting up the likelihood that the highly anticipated book will drop during the 2020 campaign.

Publisher Penguin Random House started alerting foreign partners and others about the status of Obama’s book on Tuesday. The former president has been writing the book himself, handwriting a first draft on legal pads, the same technique he used for numerous White House speeches and his first best-seller, “Dreams from My Father.”

The former president and his wife, Michelle Obama, signed lucrative book deals in 2017. Mrs. Obama’s book was released last year and quickly became one of the most popular political memoirs in history, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide.

The timing of the former president’s book release is trickier. A 2020 book launch could thrust Obama back into the spotlight just as Democratic voters are choosing a presidential nominee, prompting fresh discussion of his legacy and putting him on the spot about the candidates hoping to build on it.

That would be a particularly delicate dance given that Obama has made clear he has no plans to play a role in the Democratic presidential primary, including declining to endorse his vice president, Joe Biden, or any other candidate. But as the most popular Democrat in the country, even more than three years after leaving office, Obama’s every word about the campaign will be scrutinized for signs of which candidates he favors.

The publisher did not give its partners any updates on a launch date, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. The person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Obamas signed with Penguin Random House in 2017. While the financial terms of the agreement were not released, the former president’s book was expected to garner the largest advance for any ex-president. The previous record is believed to be $15 million for Bill Clinton’s “My Life.”

Meghan declared motherhood to be “magic.” She said the baby had “just been a dream.”

LONDON (AP) — Royal couple Meghan and Prince Harry revealed their newborn son to the public on Wednesday, with the proud new mother declaring him “a dream.”

The couple, known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, posed with their son for cameras at Windsor Castle — the first in a lifetime of photo calls for the two-day-old baby, who is seventh in line to the throne.

They did not reveal the name of the child, known for now as Baby Sussex.

Harry cradled the apparently sleeping baby, wrapped in a white blanket and wearing a matching cap, in his arms.

Meghan declared motherhood to be “magic.” She said the baby had “just been a dream.”

“He has the sweetest temperament. He’s really calm,” she said.

Harry quipped: “I wonder who he gets that from.”

Asked which parent the baby took after, Harry said it was too soon to tell.

“His looks are changing every single day, so who knows?”

The couple left the photo call to introduce the baby to his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. The infant is seventh in line to the British throne and is the eighth great-grandchild of 93-year-old Elizabeth, Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

Baby Sussex was born Monday at 5:26 a.m. (0426 GMT; 12:26 a.m. EDT) at an as-yet-undisclosed location.

Family members have welcomed the new arrival, with Prince William saying on Tuesday he was “absolutely thrilled.”

Uber And Lyft Drivers Plan To Strike Wednesday

An Uber spokesman declined to comment. A Lyft spokeswoman said Lyft drivers’ hourly earnings have increased over the last two years.

NEW YORK (AP) — An organization representing for-hire drivers in New York City says its members will go on a two-hour strike against Uber and Lyft ahead of Uber’s planned initial public stock offering.

The New York City Taxi Workers Alliance says its members voted not to drive for Uber or Lyft between 7 and 9 a.m. Wednesday.

San Francisco-based Uber is aiming to raise $9 billion in its initial public offering Thursday.

Drivers in other U.S. cities are planning a work stoppage Wednesday to demand a minimum wage.

App-based drivers in New York City are already legally entitled to a minimum wage of about $17 an hour after expenses. The Taxi Workers Alliance says its demands include greater job security.

An Uber spokesman declined to comment. A Lyft spokeswoman said Lyft drivers’ hourly earnings have increased over the last two years.

Unemployment Rate For A.A.’s 90% Higher Than National Average

Experts say the reasons are complex but widely acknowledge.

As the nation touts the lowest unemployment numbers in some 50 years comes a report showing those numbers do not apply to African Americans. In fact, the rate for the is close to 90% higher than that of other racial groups in the U.S.

In April the unemployment rate dropped to 3.6% the lowest since December of 1969. For African American’s however, the rate was 67%. That equates to 86% higher than the national average for the same time period.

Experts say the reasons are complex but widely acknowledge. One is the high number of black Americans in the penal system, making it tough for them to find work after serving time. To the education system, where black from poor communities lack the training or experience to fill positions in demand.

Amazon To Open First Go Store That Accepts Cash

“This is how we’re starting,” he says. “We’re going to learn from customers on what works and what doesn’t work and then iterate and improve it over time.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon launched its high-tech Go convenience store a year ago, where shoppers can pull items off the shelf and walk out.

Now it’s adding a decidedly low-tech feature: accepting cash.

Its new store opening in New York City Tuesday will be the first Amazon Go store to do so. At its other shops, customers can only enter with an app that links to a credit card or an Amazon account.

The company, facing backlash from critics who say cashless stores discriminate against the poor, confirmed last month that it was working on a way to accept paper bill and coins.

In the new store, employee will swipe those who want to pay by cash through the turnstile entrance. After shoppers grab what they want off the shelves, an employee will scan each item with a mobile device and check them out. There still won’t be cash registers in the store.

Cameron Janes, who oversees Amazon’s physical stores, says the way it accepts cash could change in the future, but declined to give details.

“This is how we’re starting,” he says. “We’re going to learn from customers on what works and what doesn’t work and then iterate and improve it over time.”

In recent years, a small but growing number of stores around the country have gone cash-free. But some activists and politicians say that discriminates against people who don’t have a bank account.

Philadelphia became the first city to ban cashless stores earlier this year. New Jersey passed a statewide ban soon after, and similar laws are being considered in New York City and San Francisco.

It’s not clear how many shoppers will skip the app and want to pay by cash at Amazon Go. The New York store, the first in the city, is in Brookfield Place, a high-end shopping mall and office complex that houses a Gucci store and office workers from banks and credit card companies. Inside The Met Gala: Feathers, Bling And Ideas About ‘Camp’

The sartorial theme of this year’s gala was “camp”— not summer camp, but the aesthetic of camp and its influence on fashion, as explored in the museum’s new exhibit, “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” It wasn’t an easy theme to grasp; the instructions for guests were to dress with “studied triviality.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The cocktail bar was shutting down, and guests were being encouraged to commence the elegant trek to dinner through the majestic halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

But Joan Collins had just swept in, channeling her famous “Dynasty” character, Alexis, in a tiered gown of fluffy white feathers and gobs of blinding diamonds. And Alexis wanted a glass of wine.

“I’m having a great time,” Collins said of her first Met Gala. “I’d be even better if I had a drink.”

But while the results varied hugely — from Katy Perry dressing as an elaborate candlelit chandelier (and later, a cheeseburger) to Kanye West wearing a simple black jacket that cost about $40 — there were indeed some slam-dunk “camp” moments, and one was Collins.

“I’m a Met Ball virgin,” she said, “so I thought I would come as my character, Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan, and embrace it,” she said. “Everybody ALWAYS said she was camp.”

But even Collins, in her glistening diamond tiara, could not out-camp perhaps the champion camp-er of all time, Lady Gaga. The pop star and actress, a co-chair of the gala, put on a virtual burlesque show on the red carpet, slowly shedding a series of three outfits until she was left vamping in black lingerie.

Celine Dion was a different kind of show girl, dressed in a supremely crafted creation by Oscar de la Renta’s Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, inspired by the 1941 movie “Ziegfeld Girl” starring Judy Garland (a camp heroine, of course.)

Inside, Dion explored the exhibit along with her designers, and confessed that “even now, I honestly don’t really understand what camp is.” No matter: Garcia and Kim had done their research, resulting in a Vegas showgirl ensemble made of countless strands of silver-gold glass beads that took many thousands of man hours to construct, paired with a spiky feathered headpiece.

“I’m just honored that they wanted me to be a part of this whole process,” Dion said.

After walking the red carpet — actually, a pink-carpeted staircase — guests entered the Met’s vast Great Hall, where they were greeted by a sky-high centerpiece of pink roses, topped by pink flamingoes.

Some toured the exhibit, while others headed straight to the museum’s airy Petrie Court to sip cocktails and munch on crispy sea bass hors d’oeuvres, bits of foie gras, or mini-BLT towers.

Model Ashley Graham, attending her third Met Gala, laughingly confessed that she heard this year’s theme and thought: “Girl Scouts!”

But she liked what she learned about camp. “It’s extra,” she said. “Exaggerated — happily and proudly.” That was the spirit, she said, of her outfit, a short blazer dress by Dapper Dan for Gucci, with bright green eyeliner, sparkly leggings, and a Judith Leiber purse in the shape of a huge, golden retro cellphone.

“It’s the exaggerated version of myself,” she said of the outfit. “Big, bold, but still you.”

Laverne Cox had no trouble understanding the camp theme; in college at Marymount Manhattan, she’d been “obsessed with Susan Sontag,” the author of the 58-point essay, “Notes on ‘Camp,’” on which the Met exhibit is built.

In fact, Cox, a star of “Orange is the New Black” and the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy, was able to reel off competing definitions of camp.

“It’s of course artificial, but also parody,” said Cox, wearing a striking sculptural gown by Christian Siriano, along with turquoise hair. “It’s a comment on culture. Also, there’s high camp vs. low camp. And there’s an invisible wink of camp.” She pondered whether Garland and daughter Liza Minnelli were the same type of campness.

Billy Porter, too, had done some thinking about camp. The “Pose” star solidified his growing reputation as a red-carpet star with a dramatic entrance as an Egyptian sun deity on a litter carried by six shirtless men. His golden ensemble — we’re talking gold on the head and the face, too, as well as huge golden wings — was designed by the Blonds.

“The kids today call it being ‘extra,’” Porter said inside, of the camp aesthetic. “It’s about taking a thing and exploding it to the biggest degree. It has in the past been used as a pejorative, but this evening reclaims it.”

Porter was also carrying a purse with a written message that demanded, using an expletive, to be paid fairly.

“It means,” he said with a grin, “that you can’t pay me scale no more! Get the prices right.”

Attending his first gala was Max Hollein, who took over as the museum’s director last year. Hollein said that since work on the exhibit began, he and museum colleagues have been finding “camp” in familiar works all over the museum.

“Camp is a lens, a way of seeing the world,” he said, adding that camp existed “long before we knew what it was.”

For Broadway actor Patrick Vaill, examining the fashions at the exhibit, the adjective that seemed most apt was “joyful.” Vaill was joined by his “Oklahoma!” co-star Damon Daunno, who’s nominated for a Tony for his role as Curly.

Daunno, dressed in a pink Prabal Gurung suit, praised Anna Wintour, co-chair of the gala for more than two decades, for welcoming members of the Broadway community to the party, along with better-known megastars of TV, movies, music and sports. “How generous and hip that she does that,” he said.

Other Broadway actors at the gala included the five lead actors from the Temptations musical “Ain’t Too Proud,” in black-and-white Thom Browne suits, and Santino Fontana, starring now in “Tootsie.”

Fontana and his wife, actress Jessica Fontana, attending their first Met Gala, professed — like many — to some lingering confusion over the meaning of camp, without much help from “studied triviality.” But they seemed to know it when they saw it.

“I mean, Joan Collins!” noted Fontana. “Now, THAT’S camp.”
