DC School Official Seeks Better Sexual Assault Reporting

The resolution calls for families to be notified faster and that students can report incidents anonymously to officials

(Washington, DC) — One member of the D.C. State Board of Education is calling for better reporting of sexual assault cases. Doctor Carlene Reid, who represents Ward 8 on the State Board of Education, says she has drafted a resolution in the wake of an attack inside Ballou High School in Southeast D.C. In that incident in mid-March, parents of school children were not notified of the incident until the day after the attack when a parent posted about the attack on social media. The recommendation is expected to be considered during the State Board’s Advocacy and Outreach Committee meeting tomorrow.

Abbott Elementary Creator Quinta Brunson Slams Calls for a School Shooting Episode

Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson shared with her social media followers a request that was asked of her. In light of the recent school shooting, she said people were asking her to write a school shooting episode into Abbott Elementary. She wrote, people are that deeply removed from demanding more from the politicians they’ve elected and are instead demanding entertainment. Please use that energy to ask your elected officials and nothing less. She then shared an actual screen shot from her DMs. Why do you think people are more comfortable making this request rather than voting or peacefully protesting?

Todd Tucker Sends Social Media Into a Frenzy After Declaring Kandi the Queen of ‘RHOA’

If your significant other doesn’t ‘ride out’ for you, do they really love you? Todd Tucker definitely rode out for his wife, Real Housewife of Atlanta OG, Kandi Burruss when he said she is the Queen of the franchise. This past Sunday’s episode took a few hard shots at Todd. Kandi had her husband on her YouTube series, Speak On It and asked him how he felt about the episode. When they talk about you I’m like–you’re the Queen. They have to go for the throne. Like, this is your show. I don’t care what nobody says, it’s yours, it’s been yours and you’ve been on it the longest. You’ve used the platform for what it’s for and people see that and they want that. Do you agree or disagree with Todd’s assessment?

Do Black People Need Sunscreen? These Are The Facts.

Summer is around the corner and temperatures in the DMV are already rising with last weekend hitting highs of 95 degrees.

With weather like that, it’s important to protect your skin and Friday May 27 is National Sunscreen Day, so WHUR’s Shawna Mizelle asked a dermatologist about the myth that Black people don’t need sunscreen.

Dr. Melanye Maclin broke down the facts and everything you need to know about sunscreen this summer.

Is it true that Black people don’t need sunscreen? Why or why not??

Dr. Maclin: FALSE! Black skin, although increased color from more pigment producing cells called melanocytes, must use daily sunscreen! All shades of black are just as susceptible to damage as any other race.

Black skin can still get sunburn, premature aging effects causing wrinkles and even skin cancer, especially melanoma.

Why do you think this myth is so widespread?

Dr. Maclin: From a historical basis, our traditional Black family mindset has always thought and shared for many generations that our darker skin color protected us from damage. Honestly, many still believe this to be the case hence why ongoing sunscreen information is needed.

Can Black people get sunburnt?

Dr. Maclin: ABSOLUTELY especially from Ultraviolet B (UVB) to skin during excess exposure while out in high sun times (10am-4pm). Think of the “B for Burnt”. Ultraviolet A(UVA) plays less of a role in burning as more damage causing early aging (fine lines and wrinkles..think “A for Aging”). Regardless, both can cause Black skin to burn.

What risks are posed when Black people do not wear sunscreen?

Dr. Maclin: The risks are same in all races and nationalities who do not use sunscreen. Black skin can still get a sunburn, develop early aging signs (fine lines and wrinkles), sun exacerbated skin rashes (Ex. Lupus, photodermatitis) and skin cancer, especially melanoma.

Melanoma is very serious and is found mostly on acral areas of our body (scalp, ears, nose, palms, soles, between toes). This can go unnoticed or think it is a common mole but can be very aggressive resulting in potential death from spread to organs. Critical to get a full skin check once a year by your doctor, preferably a dermatologist. You can also personally take pictures of any dark spots to keep track of colors and changes in size or irritations.

Sunscreens you recommend? How much SPF?

Dr. Maclin: I highly recommend daily use of any Broad Spectrum Sunscreen which contain essential ingredients that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Effective Sunscreens should contain at least 30 SPF (Sun Protectant Factor). Higher are better and up to 97% block UV rays but none are 100% . They should also be water-resistant although no sunscreens are fully waterproof. They must be reapplied every two hours if outdoors even on cloudy days and if sweating or in water.

If sensitive skin or allergic to any of the chemical ingredients, look for suncreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide which coat skin that physically block rays.

Not using any sunscreen is NOT an option and only wearing light weight long sleeve protective clothing and wide brim hats do not replace daily importance.

18 Kids Killed In Latest Mass Shooting In USA

Suspected gunman in the Texas school shooting is dead as authorities now search for a motive.

(Tuesday, May 24, 2022) – The death toll has risen to 18 children killed in the latest mass shooting to rock America.  It happened in a small area just outside of San Antonio, Texas as an 18-year-old gunman walked into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and opened fire.

Federal law enforcement officials say three adults were also among the dead.  It is not clear if that includes the gunman.  Governor Greg Abbott said the gunman has been identified as Salvador Ramos who was from the area.

Authorities say Ramos apparently killed his grandmother prior to coming to the school where he opened fire on several classrooms.  The children killed are in grades 2nd through 4th.

Officials did not immediately reveal a motive.  But Governor Abbott said the shooter was likely killed by police officers and that he acted alone.

President Biden is set to address the nation later tonight to discuss today’s tragedy.  In the meantime, flags at the White House and at federal buildings are flying at half-staff in honor of the victims.

Texas Elementary School Mass Shooting Part 1

We examine the circumstances around the latest shooting and ask why does this keep happening.

For the second time this month… gun violence has ended the lives of at least 21 people in one incident.  18 elementary school children and three adults were killed in Uvalde, Texas… 85 Miles west of San Antonio.  This comes just ten days after 13 people were shot in at grocery store in Buffalo, New York.  Ten people were killed during that murderous rampage. We examine the circumstances around the latest shooting and ask why does this keep happening.

Vice President Kamala Harris Discusses Mental Health

Vice President Kamala Harris is calling for more mental health services.  Harris spent this afternoon at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., paying tribute to the country’s health care workers and spotlighting mental health in the industry.   Harris explained, “I think for too long when we think about health care, we act as though the body just starts from the neck down instead of understanding we also need to address health care from the neck up — mental health. So, if you are struggling, please know you are not alone, that you are seen and that you deserve to receive the help you desire and the help you need.” The speech comes in the middle of Mental Health Awareness Month.   Do you think high-school students should have to take a class on mental health?

Baby Formula Shortage

How did we get here and what can parents do about it?

FEDEX  Express has secured a government contract to bring another international shipment of infant formula to the U.S. On Wednesday.  The first international shipment of baby formula will soon be hitting u.s. Store shelves after the first batch from operation fly formula landed in Indiana yesterday aboard an Air Force C-17 cargo plane from Germany.
The 39 tons of nestle infant formula is the equivalent of more than a million-and-a-half eight-ounce bottles.
According to The White house, that’s enough formula to fill about 15 percent of the need for formula nationwide.
But the ongoing formula shortage is being blamed for the hospitalization of four babies in South Carolina.
According to the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, the babies had bad reactions to new formulas.  The switch to new formulas the babies couldn’t tolerate was forced by the parents not being able to find their usual formula.

How did we get here and what can parents do about the shortage while they wait for baby formula production to return to full steam?

Pfizer Says COVID Child Vax 80% Omicron Effective

(New York, NY) — Pfizer says its COVID-19 vaccine for babies and preschoolers is 80-percent effective against Omicron. The New York pharmaceutical giant made that announcement this morning with its German partner BioNTech. Pfizer says three child-size doses of its COVID vax were “well-tolerated” and showed a strong immune response in children ages six-month to five-years-old. Its clinical trial involved more than 16-hundred younger children. Pfizer says it’ll submit its data to the FDA later this week.

ESPN reports the team bought land in Virginia for over 100-million dollars.

(Ashburn, VA) — The Washington Commanders may soon have a new home. Sources tell ESPN the NFL team bought land in Virginia for over 100-million dollars. The report says the deal for the 200 acres of land closed last week, but hasn’t been filed with Prince William County. It may not be the final choice, though, as the sources also told ESPN the team may also buy land just over 20 miles outside of Washington, DC. The team will reportedly wait until it knows how much the county and state are willing to commit before making a final decision.

Monkeypox Spreading In US: What You Should Know

The spread of ‘monkeypox’ is grabbing headlines and has people concerned about another major pandemic. But one health expert says the disease is nothing like COVID-19.

World Health Organization adviser Dr. David Heymann says it’s unlikely we’ll see a widespread transmission of monkeypox: “This is not COVID… it does not spread in the air and we have vaccines to protect against it”.

Monkeypox isn’t a new disease. The first confirmed human case was in 1970, when the virus was isolated from a child suspected of having smallpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Monkeypox is unlikely to cause another pandemic, but with COVID-19 top of mind, fear of another major outbreak is understandable.

Health officials are concerned that more cases will arise with increased travel.

Monkeypox appears to spread through sexual activity or very close contact.

Heymann says the current leading theory is that the disease was transmitted sexually, at two rave parties held in Spain and Belgium.

More than 90 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed so far, more than two-thirds of which are in Spain or Portugal.

Though rare and usually mild, monkeypox can still potentially cause severe illness. Monkeypox symptoms include fever and body aches as well as swollen lymph nodes and a rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Biden Administration Flies In Baby Formula

President Joe Biden and his administration are taking steps to address the baby formula shortage that has impacted mothers across the nation since one of the leading formula suppliers, Abbott Nutrition, enacted a voluntary recall of their products.

Operation Fly Formula is underway to address the issue and one plane filled with formula has already landed in Indiana on Sunday.

According to reports from ABC News, Sunday’s plane which arrived from Germany carried over 70,000 pounds of baby formula.

According to the White House, an additional plane is expected to arrive in Pennsylvania later this week with 114 pounds of Gerber instant formula.
A press release from the White House said, “The Biden-Harris Administration will continue to identify opportunities to invoke the Defense Production Act and further increase infant formula production to maximum capacity.”

It’s not a bad year to be Stephen Curry. In addition to leading the Golden State Warriors to the Western Conference Finals, the 34-year-old on Monday received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Davidson College. Curry, who began taking classes for the degree 13 years ago, says he promised his mother he’d complete the course of studies needed to earn the honor. Curry can now hang his degree alongside his other accolades, which include three NBA championships, two MVPs and two scoring titles. Would you consider returning to school to earn a degree later in life?

Remy Ma now has her own street in the Bronx. She is the latest artist to get their own street along the Bronx Walk of Fame. The ceremony was held this past Saturday (May 14). Remy’s husband, Papoose, friend Fat Joe and family members were in attendance. On Instagram, Remy pointed out that her street is across the street from where she had to go to court. The street is down the block from a shelter she once lived in and up the street from the high school she attended. She ended the post by saying, this is for all the girls from the hood that look like me, that talk like me, that been through sh– like me. Phaedra Parks Spotted In Real Housewives of Dubai Trailer

Real Housewives of Dubia may be a new show, but the trailer that was just released this week had one familiar face — Phaedra Parks.

Parks who previously held a peach on Real Housewives of Atlanta left the show after it was revealed that she started damaging rumours about Kandi Burrus and husband, Todd Tucker, as it related to Porsha Williams.

The revelation which happened during the season 9 reunion was groundbreaking after a tumultuous season trying to figure out, “Who said that?”

Since leaving the Atlanta housewives franchise, Phaedra has still managed to garner screen time. She starred on Marriage Bootcamp in 2020.
Parks is also slowly making her way back to Bravo. Her most recent role in Season 2 of Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip signified that her relationship with BRAVO TV is still alive.

Her cameo on Real Housewives of Dubia is another sign and has fans excited. Parks even trended on Twitter.

“Give me the tea honey, I’m very thirsty today,” Parks can be seen saying in the trailer.

The show which airs on Bravo is set to premiere on June 1st.
