Google Launches ‘Multisearch’ Feature To Search By Text and Images

By Brooks Welch

Google has announced its “multisearch” feature that allows users to search using text and images at the same time via Google Lens, the company’s image recognition technology.

According to TechCrunch, Google first teased the functionality last September at its Search On event and said it would be launching the feature in the coming months after testing and evaluation. Starting today, the new multisearch functionality is available as a beta feature in English in the United States.

With this feature, you could search for a shirt similar to one in a photo but type that you want it with “polka dots,” or take a picture of your couch and type “chair” to find ones that look similar, CNN explains.

As detailed by Tom’s Guide, you can use Google’s multisearch feature in two simple steps.

1. From the Google app, tap the Google Lens button. From there you can either search for a screenshot on your camera roll or snap a photo.

2. The Google app will list search results. Swipe up and tap the “+ Add to your search button,” typing in your search query. You’ll get a page of results based on your search term and photo.

The outlet also shared the insight that, while Google is promoting multisearch as an e-commerce tool at the moment, multisearch can expand to other areas like cleaning tips, first-aid guidance and other how-to suggestions.

Uber Drops Masks Requirements

The move comes just a day after the Biden administration’s mask mandate for air and public transportation was struck down.

Uber has changed its policy for wearing masks on rides. The ride-share company has dropped its mask requirement for both drivers and customers. “The CDC order requiring masks while using rideshare platforms such as Uber is no longer in effect, and we’ve revised our COVID-19 mask and front-seat policies accordingly,” Uber sent to its customers on Tuesday. Uber also dropped the requirement for people to only sit in the back seat, though encouraged skipping the front by the driver unless a large party would be getting picked up. The move comes just a day after the Biden administration’s mask mandate for air and public transportation was struck down.

Will you still be wearing a mask when you take an Uber? How often do you take an Uber? Is this a safe move from the company?

Angela Simmons’ Ex-Fiancés Killer Sentenced To Life

The man responsible for the murder of Angela Simmon’s ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson, has been sentenced to life in prison.

By Brooks Welch

The man responsible for the murder of Angela Simmon’s ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson, has been sentenced to life in prison.

As Yahoo! reports, Tennyson was fatally shot outside of his garage in 2018. Williams turned himself in just days later, and surrendered to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and murder. Tennyson was 37.

“Justice served today!” she wrote on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself, Tennyson, and their son together. “We got you ! We got him.”

According to TMZ, on April 15, Michael Williams was officially sentenced to life for murder, as well as an additional 15 years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The outlet also reported that although the couple separated a year prior, Simmons testified during the trial, emotionally sharing how the couple’s now five-year-old child, SJ or Sutton Jr., would grow up without knowing his father.

Before trial, she has spoken openly about the traumatizing event. On an episode of her show, ‘Growing Up Hip Hop,’ Simmons said,“How do you explain to a 3-year-old that they’re never going to see them again?” she said.  “Other than my own way, which is like ‘He’s in heaven, he’s with God,’ all of the great things.”

Recalling the moment, she stated that her child “laid his head in my chest and told me he was sad.” “I never see him emotional,” she continued. “He’s a happy kid and that whole day he was just kind of mopey and sad.”

As reported by People, shortly after the murder, Simmons posted a series of touching tributes to the father of her son.

“Thank you for leaving behind my greatest gift,” Simmons captioned a series of family shots.

“I’m hurting. I’m numb. Thank you for the out pouring of love everyone,” she continued, adding that she couldn’t “believe I’m even saying Rest in Peace Sutton.”

Mo’ Nique, Andra Day To Star In New Lee Daniel’s Horror Movie

Multi-hyphenate and ‘Empire’ alum Tasha Smith recently joined Mo’Nique and Andra Day in Lee Daniel’s new horror film.

By Brooks Welch

Multi-hyphenate and ‘Empire’ alum Tasha Smith recently joined Mo’Nique and Andra Day in Lee Daniel’s new horror film.

The project marks Smith and Daniels’ reunion after “Empire”. She also directed two episodes of Fox drama series “Star”, co-created by Daniels, Outlook reports.

According to Deadline, Oscar nominee Andra Day plays Ebony, the mother of an Indiana family whose children purportedly became demonically possessed in a thriller inspired by an actual case. Smith will play Asia, who is Ebony’s best friend.

The film is based off a true story that first became public in 2014. As reported by Deadline, Latoya Ammons and her three children experienced strange incidents in their Gary, IN, home that grew progressively worse, with the children levitating, becoming violent with one another and speaking in growls and deep voices with no recollection afterward. Skeptics abounded, but the Gary Police Department, Department of Child Services and the local church and hospital all became involved, filing reports that took the supernatural occurrences seriously. Officers, doctors and social workers said they witnessed many of the incidents, including one in which her 9-year-old son walked backward up a wall. The Indianapolis Star covered it closely as the Department of Child Services investigated it.

The film will also feature Oscar nominee Glenn Close, Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin and recent ‘King Richard’ Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis.

Back in January, Deadline also reported that the package closed upward of $65 million, covering the film’s budget and buyouts. Daniels, Tucker Tooley and Pam Williams are producing. It will begin production by the middle of this year.

Legendary DJ Kay Slay Dead at 55 Following COVID-19 Battle

DJ KaySlay passed on Easter Sunday after a battle with COVID.

By Brooks Welch

The 55-year-old New York City “hip-hop influencer and graffiti artist” DJ Kay Slay passed on Easter Sunday after a battle with COVID, reports The New York Post.

His family confirmed his death through a statement released by New York hip-hop radio station HOT 97.

“Our hearts are broken by the passing of Keith Grayson, professionally known as DJ Kay Slay. A dominant figure in Hip Hop culture with millions of fans worldwide, DJ Kay Slay will be remembered for his passion and excellence with a legacy that will transcend generations,” read the family’s tribute. “In memory of DJ Kay Slay, our family wishes to thank all of his friends, fans, and supporters for their prayers and well wishes during this difficult time. We ask that you respect our privacy as we grieve this tragic loss.”

According to The Fader, Slay contracted the virus in December but was said to be in “a recovery state” the following month. Speaking at the time his brother Kwame Grayson told HipHopDX that he was “getting stronger” and was being moved to a private hospital to continue his recuperation.

As reported by Billboard, Grayson, who began his decades-long hip-hop career by making a name under his graffiti moniker “Dez,” released his debut album, ‘The Streetsweeper, Vol. 1′ in May 2003.

The “Drama King” collaborated with Fat Joe, Raekwon and Scarface, the Lox, 50 Cent, Mobb Deep, Black Rob, Craig Mack, The Diplomats, Eminem and 8Ball & MJG among others. The album hit No. 22 on the Billboard 200 album chart in June 2003 and No. 4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, with single “Too Much For Me” with Nas, Foxy Brown, Baby and Amerie peaking at No. 53 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart in May of that year.

For years, Kay Slay hosted “The Drama Hour” on HOT 97, on which he interviewed countless hip-hop stars and aired out (or inflamed) beef between rappers.

In a statement on its website, HOT 97 said it was “shocked and saddened by the loss of our beloved” Kay Slay.
“A cultural icon, The Streetsweeper Kay Slay was more than just a DJ, to us he was family and a vital part of what made HOT 97 the successful station it is today,” the station said.

COVID Cases Spiking, Virtual Classes for Howard

Howard University has returned to virtual learning for the rest of the semester.

By Brooks Welch

Howard University has returned to virtual learning for the rest of the semester.

In a letter to students, Provost Dr. Anthony K. Wutoh and University Dean Dr. Hugh Mighty reported an increase in COVID-19 positivity on campus due to the BA.2 omicron subvariant of the coronavirus.

“While recent studies show that BA.2 does not cause more severe illness than the initial omicron variant, data also show that BA.2 is even more transmissible. As we noted previously, given the increased number of cases, we also have a concurrent increase in the number of residential students assigned to quarantine. The current quarantine process and protocols will remain in effect,” WUSA 9 reports.

As reported by FOX 5, Howard says over the past week, the positivity rate at the university increased from 2 percent to approximately 5 percent.

The university is implementing the following measures effective Thursday:

– Undergraduate courses conducted during the final days of classes (April 14–22, 2022) will be held online, as will any final examinations for undergraduate students.

– Any social gatherings are encouraged to be conducted outdoors.

– Capacity at indoor social events will be limited.

Residence halls will remain open, but students have the option to check out early. The letter did not mention canceling graduation ceremonies, but it did say that the university is putting these safety measures in place to ensure commencement celebrations can happen. (via NBC Washington 4)

Lawyer Ben Crump, Family Of Man Killed By MI Police Speak

Lyoya was fatally shot in the back of the head after a police stop.

(Grand Rapids, MI) — The family of a Black man killed by a police officer in Michigan says they’re devastated after their son was “executed.” Family attorney Ben Crump said it was very difficult to watch the video of the struggle between Patrick Lyoya  and the officer that led to Lyoya being fatally shot in the back of the head. Crump said what’s seen in the video is the police officer escalating a “minor traffic stop” into an “execution.” He added Lyoya is never seen engaging in a violent act against the officer despite the officer continuing to escalate the situation. Crump said it can only be imagined what was going inside Patrick’s mind as he was trying to flee the situation.

Muni Long Not Invited To Her ‘Hrs & Hrs’ Plaque Party

‘Hrs & Hrs’ singer Muni Long was reportedly not invited to her own plaque party.

By Brooks Welch

‘Hrs & Hrs’ singer Muni Long was reportedly not invited to her own plaque party.

As reported by The Jasmine Brand, Muni Long detailed the situation in a series of Tik Tok videos, shared on April 12.

“Come on in here and get this tea while it’s hot,” she began. “So apparently it’s a party going on tomorrow where it’s being plaques given away for ‘Hrs & Hrs.’ And guess who’s not getting one? Me! Guess who wasn’t even invited? Me,” she continued.

She inserted the invite list that didn’t show her name. The singer claimed the party is being held by J.R. McKee, a music industry executive she worked with before falling out with him in January.

“You think you’re gonna go there for like a little celebration party, right? He’s gonna present you with a plaque that I’ve never seen, didn’t approve, has my logo on it next to his, which, I’m not cool with that. And here’s the kicker, he’s gonna turn around and use the moment [to promote] one of his artists. He’s gonna play music for you guys, using the moment like he wants to honor you, but really it’s a manipulation tactic. How awesome is that?”

Muni Long continued, detailing her falling out with J.R. McKee, who owns the streaming label MPR Global.

“I haven’t been in good graces with J.R. since January when I discovered I was being manipulated and I brought it up to him and his partner, Drew … and you know what he said? He said, ‘I’m not in the Muni Long business. I’m in the J.R. McKee business. I don’t care how it makes you feel. You signed [the contract]. I’m going to do what I gotta do for my family.’”

She said she was hurt by his response and felt he was exploiting her “creations.”

“You don’t care about the creator or how what you’re saying to me affects my creative process. You just care about the money. Cool,” she stated.

Muni Long shared some final words on Instagram, making it clear that she does not support J.R. McKee and his label.

“I also hate that there may be other artists who have fallen for the fallacy, believing that I co-sign what is going on and I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT,” she added.

Well, it’s been real. The three time Daytime Emmy and two time NAACP Image Award-winning talk show, ‘The Real‘ has been officially canceled after eight seasons.

Warner Bros. Unscripted Television/Telepictures canceled the beloved talk show, declining to extend it to a ninth season, according to Variety. The decision is unrelated to the launch of “The Jennifer Hudson Show.”

Co-host Loni Love tweeted, “In the end The Real cast & crew did everything we could to scale the show down..We shot 7-8 shows in 3 days, no audience, made a conference room into a studio, but in my opinion Covid costs killed this show,” Love said on Twitter. “It’s been a great ride and thanks to the viewers for 8 great seasons!”

“It [w]as a fun ride!! Got to work with an group of amazing women and crew,” Garcelle Beauvais tweeted.

Besides Love and Beauvais, the rest of the panel, Adrienne Bailon Houghton and Jeannie Mai Jenkins, has yet to publicly comment, reports LA Times.

The original hosts included actor Tamera Mowry-Housley, stylist Jeannie Mai, singer Tamar Braxton and singer an actress Loni Love.

Tamera Mowry-Housley and Tamar Braxton were both co-hosts when “The Real” premiered in 2013 but have since left the show. Amanda Seales also had a short stint on the talk show before Garcelle Beauvais joined as a permanent co-host.

“These are clips from the biopic based on my life that is currently being filmed. My life is being immortalized on film and will be shown on a major network soon. This is so humbling. I didn’t seek it. It sought and found me, and for this I’m grateful to Him,” he added.
As reported by BET News, Sapp’s biopic is named after his widely-successful 2007 hit single and will follow the 55-year-old’s childhood from struggling with alcohol abuse as a teenager to rising to global gospel artist. Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick Announces Retirement

Wayne A.I. Frederick is soon to be Howard University’s former president in 2024.

By Brooks Welch

Wayne A.I. Frederick is soon to be Howard University’s former president come June of 2024.

On Wednesday, the Board of Trustees announced Frederick’s June 2024 retirement by email to the Howard University community. Frederick has served as president for the past nine years.

“The next president of Howard will follow Dr. Frederick’s lead in exemplifying our motto of truth and service by strengthening our legacy, embracing and expanding our community, and building on our strategic plan to prioritize the success of our students, faculty and staff,” the letter reads.

As reported by the Hilltop, Frederick is an alumni and worked as a faculty member prior to his appointment as president of the University. He began as interim president in 2013 and took on a permanent position in 2014, making him the 17th president of the university. Aside from his role as president, he has also maintained the title of Charles R. Drew Endowed Chair of Surgery.

Trustee Chair Laurence Morse wrote, “I join my fellow trustees in expressing my profound gratitude to Dr. Frederick for his tireless, unwavering efforts to lead our University to greater academic excellence, fiscal strength, and service to our community and country.”

“Needless to say, given his outstanding performance, the board desired that he would have chosen to remain in office longer,” he continued. (via WTOP News)

Howard said under Frederick’s tenure, “the four-year graduation rate increased by 20 percentage points to 60 percent, and the six-year graduation rate increased 8 percentage points to 69 percent. Both percentages are the highest in our University’s history.”

VA Home Sells But Tenant Stays In Basement

Would you buy a home with a stranger living in the basement?

A Fairfax, Virginia home hit the market asking for $800,000 but there is a catch— tenants will remain in the basement.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, the listing stated that a buyer would have to agree to have someone living on the lower level — with no lease.

The Daily Mail also reported that the new buyer will have no access to see the lower level at all, and will presumably have no recourse in getting the downstairs ‘neighbor’ to ever leave.

The 5 bedroom, 3 and a half bath home was built in 1964 and listed as 2,548 square feet.

Fox5DC reported on Wednesday that the home sold for above it’s asking price and brought in a total of five offers. Which begs the question, would you buy a home with a stranger living in the basement?

NeNe Leakes Makes New Claims Of Blacklisting & Harassment

After launching a boycott against Bravo, the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ reality star Nene Leakes claims she is “blacklisted.”

By Brooks Welch

After launching a boycott against Bravo, the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ reality star Nene Leakes claims she is “blacklisted.”

According to Screen Rant, Leakes was once the highest paid housewife across all the franchises. After season 12 in 2020, NeNe announced her exit which she claimed was over failed contract negotiations at the time. However, shortly after making the big announcement, NeNe went on a tirade against Bravo accusing them of racism and discrimination, claims which other fellow Bravo personalities also backed up (via The Shade Room).

Leakes seemingly “stirred the pot” when she tweeted, “They always Blacklist you when you tell the truth.”

She later posted, “Stop harassing me, my business and my family! Stop having me followed, stop blacklisting black women for speaking the truth, stop paying off attorneys to not file discrimination claims!” A message assumed to be aimed at Bravo, her former network.

There are rumors about the tension between Nene Leakes and Kandi Burruss, reports Hot New Hip Hop.

“You can’t brag about being paid the most out of anybody and then say that they’re not treating you right,” Kandi said on a recent episode of her latest spin-off ‘Kandi & The Gang.’

Amber Riley And DeSean Black Call Off Wedding

Singer and actress Amber Riley has reportedly called it quits with her former fiancé, DeSean Black.

By Brooks Welch

Singer and actress Amber Riley has reportedly called it quits with her former fiancé, DeSean Black.

As reported by BET News, the ‘Single Black Female’ star spoke with ‘Nice & Neat’ podcast hosts and was asked about her relationship status.

“I am a single Black female,” she revealed. “I am, but I’m not a crazy one like in the movie.”

“I’m recently single,” she added, noting that their breakup was amicable. “I wish him the best. I don’t have anything horrible or bad to say.”

Riley became engaged to Black in 2020. According to Essence, Riley posted a now deleted photo with the caption, “There was a time when I thought I didn’t want or deserve this kind of love,” she wrote. “I’m looking at a man who changed my mind. My time by myself, loving on myself, getting comfortable with myself, prepared me for you, and prepared me for this. I am so proud to say, I am the future Mrs. Black.”

Black felt similarly, he reposted and captioned the same photo by saying, “Fellas, when a woman looks at you like this, it’s a clear indication that you’re doing the right thing,” he wrote. “Now, when she delivers unconditional love that you’ve never experienced, it’s another clear indication that you’ve found the one. Only a fool would let someone as special as this slip away. So I did what any wise man would do and put a ring on it.”

Details about what happened or who initiated the breakup have not been given.

U.S. Saw Highest Death Toll Ever In 2021

The biggest cause of the increase was COVID-19.

2021 was the deadliest year in U.S. history – for multiple reasons, according to a new report. 3.465 million deaths were reported in the U.S. last year, the highest single-year death toll in the nation’s history.

The biggest cause of the increase was COVID-19 – accounting for 65,000 more deaths than in 2020.

Drug overdose deaths also saw a significant spike – especially among young people age 14-18.

Deaths from cancer, diabetes, liver disease, and stroke also increased last year.

Other than COVID-19, why do you think so many other causes of death increased in 2021?  Will they go down in 2022?

Philly To Enforce Indoor Mask Mandate

Philadelphia is reimposing their indoor mask mandates as COVID cases begin to rise.

By Brooks Welch

Philadelphia is reimposing their indoor mask mandates as COVID cases begin to rise.

The Philadelphia Department of Health said coronavirus cases increased by more than 50% in a ten-day span in the city where there’s now an average of 142 new cases per day.

Taking effect on April 18, Philadelphia will again require masks indoors at all restaurants, shops, offices, and other indoor public spaces next week, the city health department announced Monday. Businesses can opt to require proof of vaccination instead of requiring masks.

“I sincerely wish we didn’t have to do this again,” said city Health Commissioner Cheryl Bettigole. “I wish this pandemic was over just as much as any of you.”

She continues, “Our city remains open. By wearing masks consistently we can continue to go about our daily lives and continue to take part in the life of our city without contributing to increasing transmission of COVID-19,” Bettigole said.

Viola Davis Opens Up About Weight Struggles

She went on to jokingly blame her drinking habits for the extra pounds.

By Brooks Welch

Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday to promote her new Showtime series, ‘The First Lady.’ The actress used the sit-down with Kimmel to open up about her struggles with weight.

“I turn 56, and I don’t know what fits anymore,” Davis said. “That’s when it hit. Everything gets wider, bulgier and here’s the thing, I work out.”

Yahoo! reports that the ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ star eats well and exercises regularly to maintain what she believes is a healthy weight. That being said, she sometimes is shocked at what the scale reads when she steps on it.

“I get on the scale,” she said. “I look at it. I get back off. I get back on. I get off. And then I’ll even take a hair pin out of my hair. I’ll put it on the side. I get back on. And by that time I’m mad as hell.”

She went on to jokingly blame her drinking habits for the extra pounds.

“I think it has something to do with those large glasses of liquor I’ve been drinking during the pandemic,” she laughed. “I’ve been knocking that back.”

According to News Week, along with Davis’ role as Michelle Obama in the Showtime series ‘The First Lady,’ she is also set to appear in a Netflix special alongside Oprah Winfrey as herself later this month filmed at the host’s home in Maui.

‘Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event’ launches on April 22 and will feature a discussion about the celebrated actress’ life and illustrious career.

‘The First Lady’ debuts on April 17 at 9PM ET/PT, streaming exclusively on Showtime.
