Amber Riley And DeSean Black Call Off Wedding

Singer and actress Amber Riley has reportedly called it quits with her former fiancé, DeSean Black.

By Brooks Welch

Singer and actress Amber Riley has reportedly called it quits with her former fiancé, DeSean Black.

As reported by BET News, the ‘Single Black Female’ star spoke with ‘Nice & Neat’ podcast hosts and was asked about her relationship status.

“I am a single Black female,” she revealed. “I am, but I’m not a crazy one like in the movie.”

“I’m recently single,” she added, noting that their breakup was amicable. “I wish him the best. I don’t have anything horrible or bad to say.”

Riley became engaged to Black in 2020. According to Essence, Riley posted a now deleted photo with the caption, “There was a time when I thought I didn’t want or deserve this kind of love,” she wrote. “I’m looking at a man who changed my mind. My time by myself, loving on myself, getting comfortable with myself, prepared me for you, and prepared me for this. I am so proud to say, I am the future Mrs. Black.”

Black felt similarly, he reposted and captioned the same photo by saying, “Fellas, when a woman looks at you like this, it’s a clear indication that you’re doing the right thing,” he wrote. “Now, when she delivers unconditional love that you’ve never experienced, it’s another clear indication that you’ve found the one. Only a fool would let someone as special as this slip away. So I did what any wise man would do and put a ring on it.”

Details about what happened or who initiated the breakup have not been given.

Philly To Enforce Indoor Mask Mandate

Philadelphia is reimposing their indoor mask mandates as COVID cases begin to rise.

By Brooks Welch

Philadelphia is reimposing their indoor mask mandates as COVID cases begin to rise.

The Philadelphia Department of Health said coronavirus cases increased by more than 50% in a ten-day span in the city where there’s now an average of 142 new cases per day.

Taking effect on April 18, Philadelphia will again require masks indoors at all restaurants, shops, offices, and other indoor public spaces next week, the city health department announced Monday. Businesses can opt to require proof of vaccination instead of requiring masks.

“I sincerely wish we didn’t have to do this again,” said city Health Commissioner Cheryl Bettigole. “I wish this pandemic was over just as much as any of you.”

She continues, “Our city remains open. By wearing masks consistently we can continue to go about our daily lives and continue to take part in the life of our city without contributing to increasing transmission of COVID-19,” Bettigole said.

Viola Davis Opens Up About Weight Struggles

She went on to jokingly blame her drinking habits for the extra pounds.

By Brooks Welch

Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday to promote her new Showtime series, ‘The First Lady.’ The actress used the sit-down with Kimmel to open up about her struggles with weight.

“I turn 56, and I don’t know what fits anymore,” Davis said. “That’s when it hit. Everything gets wider, bulgier and here’s the thing, I work out.”

Yahoo! reports that the ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ star eats well and exercises regularly to maintain what she believes is a healthy weight. That being said, she sometimes is shocked at what the scale reads when she steps on it.

“I get on the scale,” she said. “I look at it. I get back off. I get back on. I get off. And then I’ll even take a hair pin out of my hair. I’ll put it on the side. I get back on. And by that time I’m mad as hell.”

She went on to jokingly blame her drinking habits for the extra pounds.

“I think it has something to do with those large glasses of liquor I’ve been drinking during the pandemic,” she laughed. “I’ve been knocking that back.”

According to News Week, along with Davis’ role as Michelle Obama in the Showtime series ‘The First Lady,’ she is also set to appear in a Netflix special alongside Oprah Winfrey as herself later this month filmed at the host’s home in Maui.

‘Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event’ launches on April 22 and will feature a discussion about the celebrated actress’ life and illustrious career.

‘The First Lady’ debuts on April 17 at 9PM ET/PT, streaming exclusively on Showtime.

Drug-Laced Edibles, Your Children and School

What can parents do about this to keep their children safe?

There have been two separate incidents at Prince George’s County schools where children ate drug-laced snacks and candy and got sick.  A 17-year-old at Parkdale High School ate a brownie laced with Adderall, crystal meth and other drugs.  An 11-year-old girl from James Madison Middle School ate marijuana-laced candy.  In both cases the edibles were given to them by other students.  County school officials sent an email to parents asking them to speak with their children about accepting prohibited items.  They also warned students to not bring them to school.  This is not the only place this is happening.  There are incidents nationwide and hospitals reporting a rise in drug cases from children consuming edibles and getting sick. What can parents do about this to keep their children safe?

As a guest on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, which aired on Wednesday, Minaj opened up about life as a mother and her experiences with anxiety, People reported.

The rapper revealed that she was “more confident” when she was younger and first entered the music industry, revealing that now she struggles with anxiety.

“I think when you are a woman and you’re in the public eye all the time, if you’re not careful you can become less confident because you’re being constantly scrutinized,” she said, during a candid moment captured during their ride. “I just don’t think it’s natural. It’s not natural for a human being to just always feel like everyone’s critiquing them.”

“When I first came into the industry, I had this amazing sense of freedom because nobody gave a s— about what I was doing,” Minaj continued. “And then it goes from that to the complete, complete opposite. Where it’s like, if I blink my eye wrong, they’ll have a story made up about why I blinked my eye that way.”

Minaj goes on to share how staying off of social media helps her to cope.

“Whenever I am off of social media, and I take that s— off my phone, I have this enormous sense of peace. And then you realize what really matters,” the new mother said, “I don’t care what could be going on… when I look at my son, I’m just magically in love….He just makes me laugh, makes me smile, makes me happy. He’s just so cute and cuddly.”

Nicki and her husband Kenneth Petty welcomed their first child, nicknamed Papa Bear, in September 2020.

By Brooks Welch

Sad news for those rooting for billionaire Robert F. Smith’s bid for the Denver Broncos, the entrepreneur’s plans have been thwarted by Walmart Heir Rob Walton.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index reported that Walton, the former chairperson of Walmart Inc. and the oldest of Sam Walton, the founder of the Walmart chain stores, is ranked as the 17th wealthiest individual globally, with a net worth of $69.1 billion.

As reported by the NY Post, Walton is expected to submit a Broncos bid on Friday worth more than $4 billion — the highest price ever paid for a professional sports team, according to sources close to the situation.

The Broncos have set Friday as the deadline for opening bids and are only accepting offers that are for more than $4 billion, a source closely following the situation said.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, have earnestly been courting Smith, 59, owner of Vista Equity Partners, a private-equity firm, to become the first African-American to own an NFL team, the NY Post reports.

the New York Post also reported that if  Smith still decides to go forward with his bid. In that case, he will be tasked with raising a $20 billion acquisition, and even with his net worth of $6.7 billion, the league requires owners to pay $1 billion in debt and 33 percent of equity on a team.

Jussie Smollett Declares Innocence In New Song

Jussie Smollett has not quit the fight for his innocence and he made a song about it.

By Brooks Welch

Actor and singer Jussie Smollett has not quit the fight for his innocence and he made a song about it.

As reported by BET, On Friday (April 8), Smollett released a nearly six-minute-long gospel-influenced R&B track called “Thank You God…” Streaming on all platforms, the song features a choir singing “thank you God for showing me my enemies” before Smollett provides a spoken-word verse aimed at critics, namely law enforcement, which he claims falsely accused him in the 2019 incident.

As reported by NY Times, the actor Jussie Smollett reported that he had been the victim of a racist and homophobic attack, and the Chicago police determined that he had staged the attack himself.

The lyrics read, “It’s like they’re hell-bent on not solving the crime / Taking out the elements of race and trans and homophobia that’s straight taking lives / But turn around and act like I’m the one that killed the strides,” Smollett slowly raps over a beat. “I can’t be mad / Take my ego out / Some people searching for fame / Some people chasing that clout / Just remember this, this ain’t that situation / You think I’m stupid enough to kill my reputation?

“Just simply to look like a victim like it’s something fun,” he adds. “Y’all better look at someone else, you got the wrong one.”

According to a post on Jussie’s Instagram, all profits from the release will be donated to the Rainbow Push Coalition (the longtime civil rights organization headed by the Rev. Jesse Jackson), STB Safety (a BIPOC trans led organization), and the Illinois Innocence Project, which helps liberate the wrongfully convicted.

Re-Examining Sex Assault and Teen Survivors

Counseling and healing after sexual assault

Do we need to re-examine how we view the issue of sexual assault and teen survivors? Over the past year… The Fairfax County school system has been in a legal battle over how it has handled accusations of sexual assault brought by a high school student.  That’s just the latest, but the county has several questionable cases going back years. Duke Ellington school of the Arts in DC is under scrutiny because of allegations against a former teacher.  Those accusations also going back many years.  This is sexual assault awareness month and were looking into how this issue affects teenage survivors.

Biden Takes Aim At Rising Gun Violence

Biden promoted a new federal rule designed to curb so-called ghost guns.

(Washington, DC) — President Biden is taking aim at rampant gun violence in the U.S. During a White House event, Biden promoted a new federal rule designed to curb so-called ghost guns. Ghost guns are manufactured privately and do not have serial numbers. Biden said anyone can get their hands on ghost gun kits. He noted that ghost guns are easy to assemble and are essentially untraceable. Biden again criticized Congress for being inactive on rising gun violence. Biden said lawmakers should enhance background checks and ban assault weapons with high-capacity magazines. He called them weapons of war.

The President said he supports the 2nd Amendment but argued it does not say, “You can own any gun you want.” Vice President Harris opened the event and called gun violence an epidemic in the U.S. She said gunfire brings pain and fear to entire communities. Meantime, the President said he is nominating Steve Dettelbach to head the ATF. Dettelbach is a former U.S. attorney in Ohio. Biden said Dettlebach will be “ready on day-one” to confront rampant gun violence.

As outlined by People, Ashanti’s first self-titled album was released 20 years ago in 2002, and the record shot to the top of the Billboard Top 200 and R&B album charts, going on to charter for 55 weeks. She went on to release five more studio albums, winning the Grammy for best contemporary R&B album for Chapter II in 2004.

Taking her talents to both the small and the silver screens as an actress, she’s also starred in The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz, Disney’s animated series The Proud Family, Coach Carter and John Tucker Must Die, among others. The “Mesmerize” singer also served as executive producer for the films STUCK and Mothers and Daughters, and will begin filming The Plus One this month, which she’s also producing.

“It’s surreal,” Ashanti told Billboard at the ceremony. “I’m shocked, stunned and over the top grateful. This is a staple in my career and the fact that it will be here forever is a big deal.”

“I’m not a super emotional person, so the fact that I cried a little bit today is a little weird for me,” the R&B singer and actress continued. “I’m so humbled and overjoyed to have friends, family and genuine people here supporting me that I love.”

As reported by Cosmopolitan, a highlight of the ceremony was the sweet retelling of a moment between her and her mother, Tina Douglas.

“My mom’s first trip to LA she walked on this very block, and went into one of the souvenir stores back when I was actually mixing my album ‘Ashanti right here in LA,” Ashanti said. “It was her first time, and she went in and bought one of the little fake Hollywood stars from the souvenir place, and she got my name put on the star, and she came back and she was like, ‘You’re gonna get one of these one day. You’re gonna get one of these stars one day!’ So, she had this for over 20 years, from the first trip to LA when I was recording my album, and I’m like, ‘Ma, I don’t think we’re gonna get one of those!’”

Tina then joined Ashanti on stage and said, “I told her, ‘you are going to get one of these stars.’”

“Ashanti is an award-winning singer, author, actress and executive producer. She has proven her talent in many different Hollywood industries and is an   example for young girls who want to be in the ‘biz’ ” Hollywood Walk of Fame Producer Ana Martinez said in a recent press release.

‘Sister Act 3’ Soon To Begin Production

EGOT Actress Whoopi Goldberg will soon star again as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act 3 as talks about production begin to stir.

By Brooks Welch

Actress Whoopi Goldberg will soon star again as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act 3 as talks about production begin to stir.

As reported by Deadline, the third installment in the ‘Sister Act‘ franchise is gaining momentum at Disney as Tim Federle has been brought on to direct with Madhuri Shekar writing the script on the sequel starring Whoopi Goldberg. Goldberg will reprise her role as Deloris, the nightclub singer turned nun, and will also produce the pic along with Tyler Perry. Tom Leonardis is also producing.

The original film followed Deloris, a nightclub singer who is forced to go into a hiding as a nun at a a convent , and ends up turning the convent choir into a soulful chorus complete with a Motown repertoire, until the sudden popularity of the choir jeopardizes her identity. The original film went on to be a huge hit leading to a sequel in 1993. As Disney continues to try to build up its content on Disney+, the studio has been taking a look at old movies to reboot. After Goldberg showed interest in reprising the role, the sequel began taking form.

According to Looper, further casting and plot remains uncertain. However, Keke Palmer playfully asked to be casted for “any job” within the Sister Act franchise while on The View.

More Black Coaches Join Discrimination Lawsuit Against The NFL

Former coach of the Cardinals Steve Wilks and NFL assistant coach Ray Horton have joined Former Dolphins coach Brian Flores in lawsuit that accuses the league and its teams of discrimination.

By Brooks Welch

Former coach of the Cardinals Steve Wilks and NFL assistant coach Ray Horton have joined Former Dolphins coach Brian Flores in lawsuit that accuses the league and its teams of discrimination.

As reported by NBC Sports, the allegations made by Wilks included how the Cardinals hired him as a “bridge coach” without giving him a meaningful chance to succeed. Wilks points out that he had to operate without a General Manager “during a critical time of the preseason” and Wilks was “stuck with an unready rookie quarterback drafted by [Keim] contrary to Mr. Wilks’ suggestion,” among many others.

The Star Tribune reported that Horton was subjected to discriminatory treatment when he was given a fake interview for the Tennessee Titans head coach position in January 2016. Horton said he was “devastated and humiliated.”

In 2020, the NFL introduced the “Rooney Rule” to stipulate teams must interview at least two minority candidates not associated with their team for a head coaching vacancy and one minority candidate for coordinator positions and high-ranking front office positions, including general manager. However, much progress hasn’t been made.

“When Coach Flores filed this action, I knew I owed it to myself, and to all Black NFL coaches and aspiring coaches, to stand with him,” Wilks said. “This lawsuit has shed further important light on a problem that we all know exists, but that too few are willing to confront. Black coaches and candidates should have exactly the same ability to become employed, and remain employed, as white coaches and candidates.”

Serena Williams Admits She Didn’t Feel A Connection With Daughter While Pregnant

In a personal essay for Elle, tennis star Serena Williams penned an account of her near-death birthing experience and revealed that she initially didn’t form a connection with her daughter, now 4, until after she gave birth.

By Brooks Welch

In a personal essay for Elle, tennis star Serena Williams penned an account of her near-death birthing experience and revealed that she initially didn’t form a connection with her daughter, now 4, until after she gave birth.

“I was nervous about meeting my baby. Throughout my pregnancy, I’d never felt a connection with her,” Williams wrote. “While I loved being pregnant, I didn’t have that amazing ‘Oh my God,’ this is my baby moment, ever. It’s something people don’t usually talk about, because we’re supposed to be in love from the first second.”

“Yes, I was a lioness who would protect her baby at any cost, but I wasn’t gushing over her,” she continued. “I kept waiting to feel like I knew her during pregnancy, but the feeling never came. Some of my mom friends told me they didn’t feel the connection in the womb either, which made me feel better, but still, I longed for it.”

As reported by People, Williams’ birth experience wasn’t an easy one. The tennis champion was rushed into an emergency cesarean section, and after the delivery, a coughing fit made her wound reopen and led doctors to discover multiple, life-threatening blood clots in her body.

Williams said the connection finally came after giving birth to Olympia in September 2017.

“When I finally saw her — and I just knew it was going to be a girl, that was one thing I knew about her before we even had it confirmed — I loved her right away,” Williams wrote in her essay. “It wasn’t exactly instantaneous, but it was there, and from that seed, it grew. I couldn’t stop staring at her, my Olympia.”

“Despite my body’s wreckage—and the fact that I couldn’t get in much breastfeeding—connecting with Olympia at long last was amazing; it was both the reward and the validation for all I’d been through,” she told Elle. “I went from not being able to really imagine her in the womb to us being completely inseparable. I still feel like I have to be around her for every day of her life, as much as possible. I’m anxious when I’m not around her. Honestly, it’s a little much.”

“Don’t Mute DC” Three Years Later

Where is the “Don’t Mute DC” movement now?

It is the sound that is so DC.  TheGo-Go syncopated beat, born and raised in Chocolate City.  But it was also the rallying cry for a cultural protest three years ago named “Don’t Mute DC”, after new-comers to the quickly gentrifying U-Street corridor complained about local business playing it.  There is a new battle brew in the district now.  What is it and where is the “Don’t Mute DC” movement now?

Will Smith Banned From Academy For Ten Years

“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said in a statement.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The motion picture academy on Friday banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars or any other academy event for 10 years following his slap of Chris Rock at the Academy Awards.

The move comes after a meeting of the academy’s Board of Governors to discuss a response to Smith’s actions.

“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage,” the academy said in a statement.

Smith pre-preemptively resigned from the academy last week during the run-up to the meeting and said he would accept any punishment the academy handed down.

“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said in a statement.

The academy also apologized for its handling of the situation and allowing Smith to stay and accept his best actor award for “King Richard.”

“During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry,” the academy said. “This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented. ”

In a statement in the days following the Oscars, the academy said Smith was asked to leave the ceremony but refused.

But it’s not clear how the message was delivered to Smith or what form it took, and several media outlets reported that he was never formally told to leave the Dolby Theatre. The Los Angeles Times reported in a story Thursday that Oscars producer Will Packer told Smith: “Officially, we don’t want you to leave. We want you to stay.”

The ban means Smith will not be presenting one of the major awards at next year’s Oscars, as is tradition for the best actor winner.

The academy in its Friday statement also expressed “deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”

The academy’s statement did not address whether Smith could be nominated for Oscars during his 10-year ban. Nor did it take any action to revoke Smith’s Academy Award.

The academy has not revoked Oscars from expelled members Harvey Weinstein or Roman Polanski.

Jackson Confirmed As First Black Female High Court Justice

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court on Thursday, shattering a historic barrier by securing her place as the first Black female justice and giving President Joe Biden a bipartisan endorsement for his effort to diversify the court.

Jackson, a 51 year-old appeals court judge with nine years experience on the federal bench, was confirmed 53-47, mostly along party lines but with three Republican votes. Presiding was Vice President Kamala Harris, also the first Black woman to reach that high office.

Jackson will take her seat when Justice Stephen Breyerretires this summer, solidifying the liberal wing of the 6-3 conservative-dominated court. She joined Biden at the White House to watch the vote, embracing as it came in.

During the four days of Senate hearings last month, Jackson spoke of her parents’ struggles through racial segregation and said her “path was clearer” than theirs as a Black American after the enactment of civil rights laws. She attended Harvard University, served as a public defender, worked at a private law firm and was appointed as a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.
