Zebras Roaming Free In PG Co. Maryland

As many as 6 Zebras have escaped from a local farm in Prince George’s County. Sightings have been reported by several residents in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

(Wednesday, September 8, 2021) – Lions, tigers, bears.  Nope.  This time, Zebras.  They are apparently roaming free in Prince George’s County, Maryland and many residents are stunned to see them.

The zebras, as many as 6, escaped from a private farm last week at the corner of Bellefield and Duley Station Roads in Upper Marlboro.  According to numerous reports, the striped animals are legally owned.  Prince George’s County Animal Control is said to be setting up a feeding station in an attempt to corral the zebras safely.

Layla Curling and her mother Alexis Reed Curling told NBC4 they saw three of the zebras in their backyard in Upper Marlboro.  “I called 311 and she thought I was crazy.  Ma’am, I am not drinking.  I have Zebras in my backyard walking on the train tracks,” Reed Curling told NBC4.

Several additional sightings have been reported today in Upper Marlboro.  So far the animals appear to be just roaming around and enjoying their freedom in Prince George’s County.

Amazon To Open 2 Cashier-Less Whole Foods Stores Next Year

By JOSEPH PISANI AP Retail Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — There will be something missing at two Whole Foods stores opening next year: the rows of cashiers. Amazon, which owns the grocery chain, said Wednesday that it will bring its cashier-less technology to two Whole Foods stores for the first time, letting shoppers grab what they need and leave without having to open their wallets. Cameras and sensors track what’s taken off shelves. Items are charged to an Amazon account after customers leave the store with them. But there will be an option for those who want to shop the old-fashioned way: Self-checkout lanes will be available that take cash, gift cards and other types of payment. One of the new stores will be in Washington, D.C., the other in Sherman Oaks, California.

Study: Young Adult Weed Smokers are Twice as Likely to Suffer Heart Attacks

Stoners under the age of 45 are twice as likely to suffer heart attacks than people who don’t indulge.
That’s according to a new study conducted by the World Health Organization, which found adults under 45 who smoked weed in the past 30 days suffered twice as many heart attacks as those who didn’t. While researchers didn’t look into why cannabis increases the chances of a heart attack, a previous study found marijuana can increase a user’s heart rate, according to data published in Tuesday’s edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Robert Page, chairman of the American Heart Association, says he believes the problem stems from the fact that today’s marijuana is more potent than ever before. “This isn’t what your granddaddy used to smoke at Woodstock; this is highly potent,” Page says.
Have you started using cannabis products since several states legalized them?

More U.S. First Responders Are Dying Of COVID-19

By The Associated Press
The resurgence of COVID-19 this summer and the national debate over vaccine requirements have created a fraught situation for the United States’ first responders, who are dying in larger numbers but pushing back against mandates.
It’s a stark contrast from the beginning of the vaccine rollout when first responders were prioritized for shots.
The mandates affect tens of thousands of police officers, firefighters and others on the front lines across the country, many of whom are spurning the vaccine. That is happening despite mandates’ consequences that range from weekly testing to suspension to termination — even though the virus is now the leading cause of U.S. law enforcement line-of-duty deaths.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 132 members of law enforcement agencies are known to have died of COVID-19 in 2021. In Florida alone last month, six people affiliated with law enforcement died over a 10-day period.
Despite the deaths, police officers and other first responders are among those most hesitant to get the vaccine and their cases continue to grow. No national statistics show the vaccination rate for America’s entire population of first responders but individual police and fire departments across the country report figures far below the national rate of 74% of adults who have had at least one dose.

Richmond’s Robert E. Lee Statue to Come Down

VA Supreme Court Paves Way For Lee Monument Removal

(Richmond, VA) — The path is clear for the removal of the Robert E. Lee Monument in Richmond, Virginia. The state Supreme Court denied challenges to the monument’s removal in two opinions. The court found a group of neighbors had no viable reason to sue. Also, the 1890s deed restriction that would require the state maintenance of the monument was found to be unenforceable. Governor Ralph Northam first announced plans to take the statue down over a year ago. However, those lawsuits stood in the way until now.

As children head back to the classroom this fall, there are all kinds of concerns.  There are concerns about COVID, of course, and what children have lost because they were forced to learn from home instead of in the classroom.  Now there’s the new normal that will require them to do a lot of catching up.  Does that mean that children of color may need addition help or teaching focus from educators?  What about social-emotional learning?  What is that?  Could it be the special sauce to help them catch up and keep up?

White House Details Plans To Improve Housing Affordability

By JOSH BOAK Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — White House officials are outlining plans to build and restore more than 2 million homes. It’s a response to the volcanic rise in housing prices over the past year. Millions of Americans are getting priced out of ownership or stuck spending the bulk of their income on rent. The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller 20-city home price index climbed a record 19.1% in June from a year ago. Too few homes are available to buy, and low interest rates have enabled affluent buyers and real estate investors to pay more for homes. The White House Council of Economic Advisers said Wednesday housing supply has fallen short of population growth for four decades.

President Biden says Americans in Afghanistan were warned 19 times to leave since March. Speaking from the White House, Biden said the U.S. is committed to get out the couple hundred Americans who still wish to leave. The President said 90-percent of Americans who wanted to leave Afghanistan already left. He said the U.S. will work with the Taliban and other international partners to get them out.

Afghan Refugees To Live At Quantico

The base says it can support up to fifty-thousand evacuees.

(Triangle, VA) — Marines are preparing the Marine Corps Base Quantico to house Afghan refugees. Marines are cleaning the facility before welcoming the refugees upon their arrival at Dulles International Airport. The housing at Quantico is part of Operation Allies Refuge, a joint effort of the Department of Defense, the U.S. Northern Command, the Department of State and Homeland Security. The base says it can support up to fifty-thousand evacuees with transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support.

Biden Says Hardest-Hit States Are Resilient

Recovery effort is being led by FEMA.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has spoken with officials in states pounded by Hurricane Ida, detailing the federal effort to survey damage and ensure access to electricity, water and cell phone service.

The president said Monday that state officials should contact the White House if they need additional support — even though the effort is being led by FEMA.

“We’ll get you what you need if we can,” Biden said. “The people of Louisiana and Mississippi are resilient. But it’s in moments like these where we can certainly see the power of government to respond to the needs of the people, if government’s prepared and if they respond.”

Also Monday, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said it had activated its Hurricane Response Team as Hurricane Ida made its way through the Gulf.

Based on data from offshore operator reports submitted as of late morning Monday, personnel have been evacuated from a total of 288 production platforms, 51.43 percent of the 560 manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Personnel have been evacuated from 11 rigs, equivalent to 100% of the 11 rigs of this type currently operating in the Gulf. Rigs can include several types of offshore drilling facilities.

A total of seven dynamically positioned rigs have moved off location out of the storm’s projected path, as a precaution.

It is estimated that approximately 94.6% of the current oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has been shut in, according to operator reports.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement estimates that approximately 93.57% of the gas production in the Gulf has been shut in.

Production information included in these reports is based on the amount of oil and gas the operator expected to produce that day. The shut-in production figures therefore are estimates, which the agency compares to historical production.

The facilities will be inspected after the storm has passed.
