Justices Rule Against Low-Level Crack Cocaine Offenders

Crack cocaine offenders convicted more than a decade ago can’t take advantage of a 2018 federal law to seek reduced prison time.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that low-level crack cocaine offenders convicted more than a decade ago can’t take advantage of a 2018 federal law to seek reduced prison time. The justices affirmed the nearly 16-year prison term handed out to Tarahrick Terry of Florida, who was arrested with 3.9 grams of crack on him in 2008. Terry’s case concerned the reach of the First Step Act, a bipartisan 2018 law signed by former President Donald Trump. It allows prisoners convicted of older crack crimes to seek reduced sentences. But the law specifically addresses crack possession only above 5 grams for one category of possession and above 50 grams for another category. It left convicts like Terry in a sort of legal limbo.

Black Woman Poised for 2nd Highest US Court

Senate set to elevate judge on Biden’s high court short list

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is poised to confirm the first appellate court judge of President Joe Biden’s tenure. Senators on Monday are expected to elevate Ketanji Brown Jackson to the nation’s second most powerful court, the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. Biden has promised to name a Black woman to the Supreme Court, and many view Jackson as a top contender should a vacancy arise. She has written nearly 600 opinions as a district judge in Washington and worked as a public defender. Democrats say her confirmation is just the start of their efforts to add more diversity to the courts. The nation’s first federal Muslim judge was confirmed last week.

In a video that has since gone viral from Saturday evening, police are seen kneeing and tasing a teenager for vaping.

Police say a group of teens was vaping outside of a non-designated area which is against boardwalk policy. The group left however one suspect began to vape again.

The police then asked for identification which the suspect did not oblige with. Then police are seen tasing then eventually kneeing the subject.

In a report by WTRF they said “During this encounter, a large crowd of people began to form around police as they attempted to arrest Brian Everett Anderson, 19, for failure to provide necessary identification for the violation of the local ordinance.
Police say Anderson began to resist arrest and was charged with disorderly conduct, resist/interfere with arrest, assault second degree, and failure to provide proof of identity.”

While the subject was seen talking back, many wondered was the force used excessive.

Gary Owens And Wendy Williams Spotted At Dinner

A divorce is always hard, especially when you’re a celebrity and everything is in the public eye. Comedian Gary Owens amid divorce with Kenya Duke was seen in NY with Wendy Williams.

After a recent appearance on William’s show, dating rumors began to spark after the two were spotted at Scotto’s. However the comedian’s ex wife Kenya Duke wasn’t too thrilled about it.

A post shared by Kenya Duke (@trulykenya)

“I was shocked you spent most of your time talking about me, the divorce, son and daughter. If the streets are that good then why waste that opportunity and not talk about upcoming projects?,” Duke said, adding, “Maybe finding out what the host likes to do? She was obviously interested.”

Her post also claimed Owens was not as active in their children’s life and that he is a “deadbeat.”

BET reported that “On March 19, Duke filed for divorce on March 19, in Los Angeles County Supreme Court, with no clarity on why the 46-year-old opted for divorce. Weeks prior to the divorce, Owen previewed The Gary Owens Show, with Kenya in the preview, as she set out to buy, flip and sell a property.”

Pharrell Williams To Open Virginia Schools For Low Income Families

Contributed by Scott Lipscomb

Pharell Williams does a little bit of everything. His latest endeavor, opening private schools for low income families in his home state of Virginia.

“If the system is fixed and unfair, then it needs to be broken,” Williams said in a news release. “We don’t want lockstep learning where so many kids fall behind; we want bespoke learning designed for each child, where the things that make a child different are the same things that will make a child rise up and take flight.”

The first school will be in the Norfolk area for grades 3 through 5.

The Virginian Pilot reported “Called Yellowhab, yellow after Williams’ nonprofit and “hab” after the name of the Mars habitat in the movie “The Martian,” the school will be tuition-free for at least the first year. The costs of attendance will be covered by philanthropic support.”

“Williams’ nonprofit has offered summer programs and other educational opportunities throughout Hampton Roads for years, but settled on Norfolk for the site of the first school because of its deeply entrenched housing segregation and the city’s plans to redevelop three public housing communities through its billion-dollar St. Paul’s redevelopment.”

These schools not only are meant to give these children a top notch education but also a safe space for them to explore their interests and discover a love for learning.

Joe Biden To Name Pulse Nightclub National Memorial

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb

June 2016 saw one of the deadliest shootings in the United States Of America. Killing 49 people, the highest amount by a single gunman, and the largest attack on the LBGTQ community, the Pulse Nightclub shooting was horrific.

President Joe Biden announced his plans to make the Pulse Nightclub a national memorial, which he says the bill was unanimously passed by the House and Senate.

In a statement he released he said “We must also acknowledge gun violence’s particular impact on LGBTQ+ communities across our nation. We must drive out hate and inequities that contribute to the epidemic of violence and murder against transgender women – especially transgender women of color. We must create a world in which our LGBTQ+ young people are loved, accepted, and feel safe in living their truth. And the Senate must swiftly pass the Equality Act, legislation that will ensure LGBTQ+ Americans finally have equal protection under law.

In the memory of all of those lost at the Pulse nightclub five years ago, let us continue the work to be a nation at our best – one that recognizes and protects the dignity and safety of every American.”

While making this a national memorial, he also hopes to make stricter gun laws so these domestic terrorism acts no longer happen.

After 7 Keeps It Old School In A New School Environment

If you like Bittersweet, you’re gonna Love our new album, Unfinished Business!”

https://youtu.be/6IXYU3QClTw

When I think about why I’m such a huge fan of After 7, there are so many reasons. They sound amazing, and they give their all. In short, those brothers can really sing.

We talked about their approach to performing. Kevon said they grew up studying the masters. Just singing wasn’t enough. Back in the day, artists had to sing, dance, and style was very important. It was so cool to hear the admiration and reverence they all still have for their craft. Triple threats… All of them. After 7 is the real deal, and they’re showing no signs of stopping any time soon.

They talked about their new single, Bittersweet and said to look out for their new album, “Unfinished Business!” I can hardly wait!

Critical Race Theory

Why is it so controversial?

The Florida Board of Education has banned the teaching of Critical Race Theory.  Governor Ron desantis opened the meeting saying we need to educate kids about historical facts, and he stresses slavery, civil rights and the holocaust are already taught in our schools.  CRT gained a lot of steam following the publication of the New York Times “1619 project.”  It argued the institution of slavery was the nation’s true founding and the American Revolution was fought in part to secure slavery.  This debate continues across the country including in Loudoun County, Virginia where some parents are also pushing back.

Florida Bans “Critical Race Theory” From Its Classrooms

A national debate is intensifying over how the role of race and racism should be examined in classroom history discussions.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida has become the latest state to ban “critical race theory” from its public schools. The state Board of Education adopted new rules Thursday to shield schoolchildren from curricula that it says could “distort historical events.” The action was widely expected since Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed many of the board’s members. A national debate is intensifying over how the role of race and racism should be examined in classroom history discussions. Critics say a national effort by conservatives to decide what can be taught in schools risks politicizing essential education.

Changes for R. Kelly Defense Strategy

R. Kelly seeks to shake up defense team ahead of NYC trial

NEW YORK (AP) — The jailed R&B singer R. Kelly wants to shake up his defense team just two months before he is set to go on trial in New York on federal racketeering charges. Attorneys Steve Greenberg and Michael Leonard of Chicago told a judge this week it would “impossible” for them to continue representing the Grammy Award-winning artist given the legal wrangling among Kelly’s defense team. The judge did not immediately grant the motion. Kelly, who is 54, is set to go on trial Aug. 9 in Brooklyn on federal racketeering charges. He has denied ever abusing anyone.

Cicadas Even Take On President Biden

So much for Secret Service agents when cicadas are targeting the President of the United States.

Washington, D.C. (Thursday, June 10, 2021) – Just about everyone has had to duck, dodge, swat, and even run in recent weeks from the pesky Cicadas.  President Joe Biden is no exception.  A Brood X Cicada landed on the president’s shirt collar Wednesday as he was preparing to board a flight to Europe from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

“Watch out for the cicadas.  I just got one, it got me,” Biden said to reporters on the tarmac.  Not even Biden’s team of secret service agents could guard him from one of the billions of cicadas.

On Tuesday, the insects caused the grounding of the airplane set to carry the White House press corps on their scheduled trip to Europe.

All across the DMV you will see people running, diving, dodging, and doing all kinds of moves to get beyond the bugs that invade above ground every 17 years.  Experts say they do not bite or sting and are essentially harmless.  But for some that knowledge is no help in quelling their fear of the beady eyed insects.

Haiti Seeing COVID Cases Rise While Waiting for 1st Vaccine Doses

Haiti has yet to administer any COVID vaccines. The Caribbean island nation has seen cases surge beyond 16k while officials await vaccine shipments.

(Thursday, June 10, 2021) – As many other countries were ravaged by COVID-19 last year, Haiti suffered only a mild outbreak of the virus.  That has apparently changed now for the Caribbean island nation.  Health officials say new cases are now surging in Haiti, the poorest country in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

The Pan American Health Organization says more virulent variants have taken hold in recent weeks, leading to sharply escalating cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Haiti is reporting more than 16,000 cases and 350 fatalities.

Haiti has yet to administer any COVID vaccines.  Haiti reportedly initially rejected shipments of vaccine doses through the United Nations-back Covax initiative because of possible side effects and worry about proper vaccine storage.  The island nation is now expected to get its first shipment of 130,000 doses next week.

But doctors reportedly say the challenge will be convincing Haitians to actually take the shot.

Senate Report Hits Massive Security Failures Around Capitol Attack

(Washington, DC) — A new report outlines massive security failures during the January 6th attack on the Capitol. The bipartisan report from two Senate committees notes a total failure of leadership by commanders of the Capitol Police, along with a lack of proper preparation. Federal intelligence officials are also criticized for failing to adequately warn Capitol Police about a potential for violence on January 6th. An angry mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol after easily breaching police security lines.

The Capitol attack followed a massive rally that now-former President Trump held near the White House. The assault occurred on the day the House and Senate were meeting to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election. That process was completed after hours of chaos at the Capitol. The Capitol Police chief and the sergeants-at-arms of the House and Senate were forced to resign after the assault.

McConnell Deems John Lewis Voting Rights Bill ‘Unnecessary’

The Kentucky Republican explained his opposition as he said using race to discriminate in voting is illegal already.

(Washington, DC) — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says a voting rights bill pushed by House Democrats isn’t needed. He told reporters the John Lewis voting rights bill is “unnecessary.” The Kentucky Republican explained his opposition as he said using race to discriminate in voting is illegal already. Lewis was a civil and voting rights advocate throughout his career.

McConnell’s comments came just hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote a letter to her colleagues about the measure. She said it was “essential” to get the proposal named after the former Georgia Congressman passed. However, the California Democrat admitted “it will not be ready until the fall.”

PG Returning to Full-Time In Person Learning In Fall

Prince George’s County School CEO announces plans for students for 2021-22 school year.

(Upper Marlboro, Maryland) – Virtual learning will come to an end for most Prince George’s County students this fall.  That announcement today from School CEO Dr. Monica Goldson.  In a statement released this morning, Goldson said the school system will welcome most students back to classrooms for full-time in-person learning this fall.  But there will be some limited virtual learning for youngsters in grades kindergarten through 6th.  COVID vaccines are not eligible as yet for youngsters under the age of 12.

“Our community has shown incredible resilience during these challenging times. Looking ahead to next school year, our goal is to have students back in our buildings full-time and in-person daily,” said Dr. Goldson.  The School CEO added that school staff has been vaccinated and she encouraged parents to get their kids to roll up their sleeves to take the shot.

Whether it’s making us laugh, or playing a track super star, Tiffany Haddish can do it all. A Grammy Award winning actress, Haddish’s next role is in a biopic of the legendary track star Florence Joyner or better known as “Flo-Jo.”

Deadline first reported that Haddish will star as Flo-Jo as well as help produce the biopic and podcast with game1.

“Flo-Jo was an elite track and field athlete in the 1980s and was named the fastest woman in the world after setting sprint records in the 100m and 200m races at the 1988 Summer Olympics. After retiring from sports a year after her record-breaking wins, Flo-Jo died at 38 after suffering an epileptic seizure.” said BET in a statement about the upcoming biopic.

“I am looking forward to telling Flo-Jo’s story the way it should be told,” said Haddish. “My goal with this film is making sure that younger generations know my ‘she-ro’ Flo-Jo, the fastest woman in the world to this day, existed.” said Haddish when asked about the biopic.

While a release date is unknown, you can expect Haddish to do an amazing job as she has shown in the past of her award winning acting career.

Simone Biles Wins Record Setting 7th National Title

Contributed By Scott Lipscomb
“Black Girl Magic” is one of the many phrases used to describe Simone Biles. The gymnast just won a record setting 7th national title.

The 4 time Olympic gold medalist made it look easy at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships this past weekend. Biles had a score of 119.650 which was almost 5 points higher than runner-up Sunisa Lee. At 24 years old it is almost surreal to see how fast Biles is smashing records.

“I feel like I did try to enjoy it because it could be one of my last championships that I’ll attend,” Biles said after her latest brush with history. “But it’s also the road to Tokyo, and after this we have trials, so we just have to really embrace the moment.” reported the Root.

Wearing a goat emblem on her leotard that is for the acronym “Greatest of All Time”, Biles hasn’t lost an all around competition since 2013. She is one of if not the most dominant gymnast ever.

So Dominant that she even has created her own tricks and conquered existing “impossible” moves.

This competition was just another pit stoop for her as she prepares for the Olympics later this summer.

“I feel like every single championship stands out for a different reason, but this one stands out specifically because it’s the road to Tokyo,” Biles said. “We came out here, and we did what we were supposed to.”

June is pride month. It’s a celebration and commemoration for the LGBTQcommunity.  It’s a commemoration because it honors the June 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City. What are the victories and the challenges for the LGBTQ community now?

Controversial Dementia Drug Gets FDA Nod

FDA approves much-debated Alzheimer’s drug panned by experts

WASHINGTON (AP) — Government health officials have approved the first drug that they say may help slow Alzheimer’s disease. The decision came after the agency’s independent advisers said the treatment hadn’t been shown to help treat the brain-destroying disease. The Food and Drug Administration is not required to follow the advisers’ advice and approved the infused drug from Biogen. It’s the first new Alzheimer’s treatment in nearly 20 years and the only one that FDA has backed to treat the underlying disease, rather than manage symptoms. One physician who voted against the drug says he is surprised and disappointed by the approval.

A spokesperson said Sunday that the couple welcomed their child Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor at 11:40 a.m. Friday at a California hospital. Her first name is a nod to a nickname for her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Her middle name honors her grandmother and Harry’s mother. The baby is eighth in line to the British throne. The birth comes after the Harry and Meghan’s explosive TV interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.
