Beyonce is not only nominated for an Oscar this year, but the Academy confirmed her name among the performers this Tuesday.

By Brooks Welch

Beyoncé is not only nominated for an Oscar this year, but the Academy confirmed her name among the performers this Tuesday.

According to the LA Times, Queen Bey will sing “Be Alive” from the Will Smith film “King Richard,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday in announcing the live performance. The song is also nominated for an Oscar this year.

“Beyoncé’s camp has been in deep talks with producers to mount a satellite performance of the song — one that would possibly open the show, and broadcast live from tennis courts in Compton, California,” reported Variety on Monday.

The performance being set on a tennis court would support the premise of ‘King Richard,’ a film that tells the story of Venus and Serena William’s journey to tennis domination.

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts about ‘Homecoming’ performer’s comeback via the Oscars stage. Many with humorous posts about only watching the Oscars for her performance. Other fans have shared their inability to handle the flawlessness that will ensue.

Among the Oscar performers is Billie Eilish and Phineas, Reba McEntire, and Sebastián Yatra.

The Oscars will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 27 at 8 p.m. ET.

Children, Trauma and the Long-Term Effects

Can we do anything about it?

Earlier this month, 42-year-old Sedrick Miller was shot to death in Northeast DC.  But he was not alone.  He was holding a car seat with one of his children in it.  He was also holding the hand of his five year old.  The children were not hurt.  Or were they? We take a look at how traumatic events witnessed by the very young impact them now and much later in life.  Can we do anything about it?

(Washington, DC) — Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is dead at the age of 84 from cancer. She was the first woman U.S. secretary of state, under former President Bill Clinton. Prior to that, she was the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Her family said she died surrounded by family and friends.

Albright immigrated with her family to the United States in 1948 from Czechoslovakia and she became a U.S. citizen in 1957. By 1976, she had received a Ph.D. from Columbia University and was working for former President Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser. Keke Palmer Partners With Amazon To Highlight Black Women-Owned Businesses

Keke Palmer recently worked with Amazon for a themed series to uplift woman business owners during Women’s History Month.

By Brooks Welch

The award-winning actress, entertainer, and entrepreneur Keke Palmer is spending Women’s History Month in like-minded company.

Palmer recently worked with Amazon for a themed series to uplift woman business owners during Women’s History Month. On March 8th, Palmer hosted a sit down conversation between Eunique Jones Gibson, the founder and CEO of #CultureTags, and Obia Ewah, the founder and CEO of OBIA Naturals, to discuss their experiences as self-made Black women and entrepreneurs, and how they are all championing more diverse leadership in business. (via About Amazon)

Entrepreneurship is a cause close to Palmer’s heart. “She became an entrepreneur herself in 2018, heading her own record label, Big Boss Entertainment,” reports Essence.

In a recent interview with Essence, Palmer mentioned Amazon’s new Black Business Accelerator, a program dedicated to helping build sustainable diversity and provide growth opportunities for Black-owned businesses. The financial support needed for mentoring, marketing, and strategic business guidance is not always afforded to Black businesses.

“It’s extremely important and generally stuff like that is expensive,” Palmer stated. “So the fact that Amazon wants to not only give a platform for sellers to sell, but also help them learn how to sell is necessary.”

The selected brands featured in Palmer’s Amazon series are Culture Tags, Obia Naturals, EPIC Everyday, Orijin Bees, Darlyng and Co., LIVE BY BEING, author Crystal Swain-Bates, Kanda Chocolates, and Bossy Cosmetics.

“My work to uplift other women who look like me is something I’m committed to every single day,” said Palmer. “As I evolve as a businesswoman and leader, I am inspired by the opportunity to connect with the women growing small businesses in Amazon’s store, and their work to represent themselves and their communities through their amazing ideas.”

Gabrielle Union Talks New Role In Disney Film ‘Cheaper By The Dozen’

Actress Gabrielle Union is the mom of blended family with 12 children in the reimagined, updated version of ‘Cheaper by the Dozen,’ originally a 1950s film starring Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy.

By Brooks Welch

Actress Gabrielle Union is the mom of blended family with 12 children in new reimagined, updated version of ‘Cheaper by the Dozen,’ originally a 1950s film starring Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy.

The Nebraska-born actress grew up watching the original ‘Cheaper By the Dozen’, and classic musicals ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ and ‘Meet Me in St. Louis.’ She recently told CinemaBlend about her observations concerning those films.

“The thing about all of those movies is they were all devoid of color,” Union stated. “No people of color, no different, you know, cultures, languages, there is zero diversity at all.”

The casting for this remake does not go unnoticed, as Union, a Black American actress is casted as the wife of Zach Braff, a white male actor.

“I wanted to make sure that we understood that she is a beautiful, amazing, accomplished black woman that wasn’t running away from blackness, she ran towards love, which is a big distinction in my eyes,” Union told Screen Rant. “I wanted her to be her full black self, which is why there are probably 87 hair changes, but I wanted to really showcase the textures, and how we as black women love our hair, and that it’s a daily part of our life and our identity.”

From director Gail Lerner and co-written by Kenya Barris & Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry, the family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen follows the Bakers, a blended family made up of one mom, one dad, nine kids, two dogs (cleverly named Bark Obama and Joe Biten), one cousin, and two exes, who are just trying to get it all done and hold it all together, albeit in a louder and more hectic way. (via Collider)

‘Cheaper by the Dozen is available to stream at Disney+.

Britney Spears Working On New Music, Last Album Released In 2016

For the first time in six years, since the release of ‘Glory,’ Britney Spears is set to ‘do it again’ and release new music.

By Brooks Welch

For the first time in six years, since the release of ‘Glory,’ Britney Spears is set to ‘do it again’ and release new music.

A source told The Sun, “It is very early days and Britney isn’t putting any pressure on herself to release an album right away or anything, but her team are putting feelers out about the prospect of new music.”

The legendary pop star’s return to music is a following her recent freedom from a 13-year-long conservatorship. In 2019, it was reported that Spears was against releasing any new music as a way to protest.

Before deactivating her Instagram account, Spears wrote in a caption: “I guess it seems odd to most now why I don’t even do my music any more . . .  that’s just the surface issues. People have no idea the awful things that were done to me personally . . .  and after what I’ve been through, I’m scared of people and the business. Not doing my music any more is my way of saying, [expletive], in a sense when it only actually benefits my family by ignoring my real work.”

After the outpour of love from fans and celebrities in support of her breaking free from her father, Jamie Spears, the ‘Baby One More Time’ singer is looking forward to this next chapter.

“She has been through an incredibly tough few years but deep down she does love making music and performing so to have some new music out there could really help her turn over a new leaf,” said the music insider.

Confirmation Hearings of Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson

We examine the first day of questioning for Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson.

It’s has been a day of tension and praise on capitol hill for historic supreme county nominee Ketanji Brown-Jackson.  The jurist who could be the first African-American woman to sit on the Supreme Court gave as good as she got today before the Senate Judiciary Committee. We examine all of the issues surrounding the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson.

Senators Question Brown-Jackson

Jackson pushes back at GOP critics, defends record

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing Republican senators’ pointed questions, Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson forcefully defended her record as a federal judge Tuesday and declared she will rule “from a position of neutrality” if confirmed as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson responded to Republicans who have questioned whether she is too liberal in her judicial philosophy, saying she tries to “understand what the people who created this law intended.” She said she relies on the words of statutes but also looks to history and practice when the meaning may not be clear.

She pushed back strongly against suggestions that she has given light sentences to child pornographers.

Could her rulings have endangered children? “As a mother and a judge,” she said, “nothing could be further from the truth.”

She described looking into the eyes of defendants and emphasizing the lifelong effects on victims. She said it is “important to me to represent that the children’s voices are represented.”

By Brooks Welch

There is talk of daytime television host Wendy Williams returning to the air.

Recently in an interview with Good Morning America via telephone, Wendy Williams addressed health concerns, lawsuit with Wells Fargo Bank, and her eventual return to television.

“I am very comfortable,” Williams told GMA’s T.J. Holmes when asked if she’s ready to get back on air. “Give me about 3 months. There are private things that I have to deal with and then I’ll be ready to come back.”

“[My] health is very well, and I’ve actually had a few appointments. I’m 57 now, and I have the mind and body of a 25-year-old,” says the media personality.

The legendary host even hinted at a surprise for fans. “This is what I would love to say to my Wendy watchers: Keep watching, because I’m going to be back on the Wendy show bigger and brighter than ever.”

The ongoing battle with Wells Fargo occurred after the bank froze Williams’ accounts for two months. According to Williams, the bank sees her as unfit to manage her personal finances. “They say that I need somebody to handle my account and I don’t want that. I want all my money,” says Williams.

In July of 2021, Williams made a last appearance on her show after complications with Graves disease, a thyroid condition, testing positive for COVID-19, and being psychologically evaluated (via Sun).

In a recent interview with the a popular New York radio station, ‘King Richard’ actress Aunjanue Ellis, who starred as Williams, the mother of Serena and Venus Williams, gave the full story of why Will Smith gave bonuses to the main actors in November.

“He did, but I think what’s important to say about that … and I think it’s important that I say this. As I said, after you get the job, the fight is not over. You know you have to fight for equal pay and that kind of thing. I did that job, and I’m thankful for it, but I could have gotten paid better. So I told him this, and he did something about it,” Ellis explained.

“As a result of his doing, his responding to the letter that I wrote to him, not only did he address that with increasing my pay, but the other actors in the movie also got their pay increased, which is the proof of when the Black women do well, everybody does well,” the actress stated.

According to Insider, Will Smith gave personal cash bonuses to the stars of ‘King Richard’ to compensate for the HBO Max release last November.

Ellis used her radio show appearance to highlight the issue of pay inequality for Black woman actors within the Entertainment industry.

“I think it’s important that first of all, people know who this man is and what he did, and also that Black women still have to fight to get paid equally,” Ellis stated.

You can stream ‘King Richard’ on HBO Max.

According to NPR, Kanye West is banned by The Academy from performing on this year’s Grammy’s stage after inappropriate online behavior toward this year’s Grammy host Trevor Noah, his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her partner Pete Davidson.

In a segment on ‘the Daily Show,’ Trevor Noah spoke up for Kardashian, saying, “You may not feel sorry for Kim because she’s rich and famous. But what she’s going through is terrifying to watch and shines a spotlight on what so many women go through when they choose to leave.”

Historic Supreme Court Nomination Hearings Begin

Ketanji Brown Jackson would be the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice if confirmed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson pledged on Monday to decide cases “without fear or favor” if the Senate confirms her historic nomination as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson, 51, thanked God and professed love for “our country and the Constitution” in a 12-minute statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee at the end of her first day of confirmation hearings, nearly four hours almost entirely consumed by remarks from the panel’s 22 members.

Republicans promised pointed questions over the coming two days, with a special focus on her record on criminal matters. Democrats were full of praise for President Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee.

With her family sitting behind her, her husband in socks bearing George Washington’s likeness, Jackson stressed that she has been independent, deciding cases “from a neutral posture” in her nine years as a judge, and that she is ever mindful of the importance of that role.

“I have dedicated my career to ensuring that the words engraved on the front of the Supreme Court building — equal justice under law — are a reality and not just an ideal,” she declared.

Barring a significant misstep, Democrats who control the Senate by the slimmest of margins intend to wrap up her confirmation before Easter. She would be the third Black justice, after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, as well as the first Black woman on the high court.

Jackson’s sternest Republican critics as well as her Democratic defenders all acknowledged the historic, barrier-breaking nature of her presence. There were frequent reminders that no Black woman had been nominated to the high court before her and repeated references to another unique aspect of her nomination: Jackson is the first former public defender nominated to be a justice.

“It’s not easy being the first. Often, you have to be the best, in some ways the bravest,” Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the committee chairman, said in support.

Democrats sought to preemptively rebut Republican criticism of her record on criminal matters as a judge and before that as a federal public defender and a member of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

Jackson “is not anti-law enforcement,” and is not “soft on crime,” Sen. Pat Leahy, D-Vt., said, noting that members of Jackson’s family have worked in law enforcement and that she has support from some national law enforcement organizations. ”Judge Jackson is no judicial activist.”

The committee’s senior Republican, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, promised Republicans would “ask tough questions about Jackson’s judicial philosophy,” without turning the hearings into a ”spectacle.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., noted that Democrats had opposed some past Republican judicial nominees who were Black or Hispanic, and he said that he and his GOP colleagues wouldn’t be deterred by Jackson’s race from asking probing questions.

He said of some criticism from the left: “It’s about, ‘We’re all racist if we ask hard questions.’ That’s not going to fly with us.”

Graham was one of three Republicans to support Jackson’s confirmation, 53-44, as an appellate judge last year. But he has indicated over the past several weeks that he is unlikely to vote for her again.

While few Republicans are likely to vote for her, most GOP senators did not aggressively criticize Jackson, whose confirmation would not change the court’s 6-3 conservative majority. Several Republicans used their time to denounce Senate Democrats instead of Jackson’s record.

The Republicans are trying to use her nomination to brand Democrats as soft on crime, an emerging theme in GOP midterm election campaigns. Biden has chosen several former public defenders for life-tenured judicial posts. In addition, Jackson served on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, an independent agency created by Congress to reduce disparity in federal prison sentences.

With Jackson silently taking notes, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said in his opening statement that his research showed that she had a pattern of issuing lower sentences in child pornography cases, repeating comments he wrote in a Twitter thread last week. The Republican National Committee echoed his claims, which Hawley did not raise when he questioned Jackson last year before voting against her appeals court confirmation.

The White House, along with several Democrats at the hearing, has rejected Hawley’s criticism as “toxic and weakly presented misinformation.”

Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones, who is guiding Jackson as she navigates the Senate process, told reporters afterward that “she will be the one to counter many of those questions” from Hawley and others on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hawley is one of several committee Republicans, along with Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who are potential 2024 presidential candidates, and their aspirations may collide with other Republicans who would prefer not to pursue a scorched-earth approach to Jackson’s nomination.

Her testimony will give most Americans, as well as the Senate, their most extensive look yet at the Harvard-trained lawyer with a broader resume than many nominees. She would be the first justice with significant criminal defense experience since Marshall.

Jackson appeared before the same committee last year, after Biden chose her to fill an opening on the federal appeals court in Washington, just down the hill from the Supreme Court.

The American Bar Association, which evaluates judicial nominees, has given her its highest rating, “well qualified.”

Biden chose Jackson in February, fulfilling a campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court for the first time in American history. She would take the seat of Justice Stephen Breyer, who announced in January that he would retire after 28 years on the court.

Jackson once worked as a law clerk to Breyer early in her legal career. She had special praise for her former boss, saying she could never fill his shoes. “But if confirmed, I would hope to carry on his spirit,” Jackson said.

She also expressed her thanks and love to her husband, Patrick Jackson, a surgeon in Washington who wiped away tears. Their two daughters, one in college and the other in high school, sat in the audience beside him. Her parents and in-laws also were in attendance.

Democrats are moving quickly to confirm Jackson, even though Breyer’s seat will not officially open until the summer. They have no votes to spare in a 50-50 Senate that they run by virtue of the tiebreaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.

While the focus was on the Senate hearings, the court was in session Monday, but one chair was was empty. The 73-year-old Thomas, the longest-serving justice, was in the hospital being treated for an infection, but he does not have COVID-19, the court said.

Kevin Durant Shares ‘Profound’ Kanye West Revelations From ‘Jeen-Yuhs’ Documentary

Kevin Durant talked about Kanye’s Jeen-Yuhs documentary on his ETC with Kevin Durant podcast.
He said two things stuck out to him while watching the documentary.
#1 how important Kanye is to his life. He said it was Kanye’s struggles of trying to get on and become a rapper and nobody taking him seriously.
The other thing that stuck out to him was the way Kanye predicted his life. He knew what he was about to do and he was calling everything out.
I get why Kanye is the way he is. We always talk about we want the old Kanye-he was just like this back then too-ranting, real confident.
What did you learn about Kanye while watching his documentary? What is the last documentary you watched?

Final Goodbye to Former WHUR PD Jesse Fax

Former WHUR Program Director Jesse Fax will be remembered tomorrow at a special memorial service in Clinton, Maryland.

Washington, D.C. (Friday, March 18, 2022) – Family, colleagues, and friends are set to gather Saturday, March 19th at 12:30 p.m. at Wiseman Funeral Home & Chapel in Clinton, Maryland to say a final farewell to former 96.3 WHUR Program Director and Radio Personality Jesse Fax.  Fax passed away Monday, February 21st at the age of 78 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

“We were very sad to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Jesse Fax.  At WHUR, we consider all who have worked here to be forever family members.  Mr. Fax was a major contributor to the rich history and legacy of WHUR.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all those who loved him,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

Fax was a mainstay at WHUR in the late 1970s and 1980s.  He could be heard weekday mornings from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. helping to keep listeners informed, entertained, and engaged about the latest happenings locally, nationally, and globally.   An avid reader and movie buff, Fax was a story teller and would have his listeners glued to the radio as he shared his views on music, politics, relationships, and the latest Hollywood movie.

A native Washingtonian and graduate of Howard University, Fax loved learning and teaching.  You would often find him “holding court” with a small crowd of people standing around him to simply absorb the wisdom he would impart on anyone listening.  His keen sense of business and radio eventually propelled Fax to the position of Program Director where he managed all of the on-air talent and placed WHUR on the pathway to broadcasting excellence.

Fax was known for his interviewing techniques too.  He would chat it up with all the stars like they were old friends, including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Parliament Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye, and many more.  He also had a way with the politicians too.  DC Mayor Marion Barry was a frequent guest.

Fax would later take his gifts and talents to the education system, which really didn’t surprise many because he was always teaching.  Fax became an English teacher at Suitland High School and went on to become the assistant principal at Bowie High School where he retired in 2017.

If you really wanted to get Fax talking non-stop, ask him about a Western.  “He knew every scene from every movie ever produced.  His wisdom was vast and legendary.  Plus he just had a commanding voice that made you want to pay attention,” said WHUR producer Bobby Adams.

Fax is survived by his wife Dr. Theresa Ann Moseley-Fax, daughter Allison Haynes, grandchildren Tre Moseley, Shawn Gates, Jaide Howard, Aliyah and Amaris Love, and a host of other family members and friends.

Jesse Fax gone.  But never forgotten.  Take your forever seat at the Mic our Radio Brother.

Protecting The Homeless

How can the homeless be better protected?

It has been an emotional week for homeless communities in DC and New York City… culminating with the arrest of a suspect in the shootings and murders of homeless men.  The homeless are some of a city’s most vulnerable.  The crimes highlight just how exposed they are to violence.  How can the homeless be better protected?

Kanye West Suspended from Instagram

After He Used A Racial Slur Against Trevor Noah Kanye Get’s Kicked Off Instagram

Noah criticized West about the amount of recent posts he posted on Instagram that involves his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. Noah’s criticism caused West to take his anger out on Noah and say a racial slur that was rewritten from the song Kumbaya, My Lord.  That saying, made West more out of control than harassing Kardashian or roasting her boyfriend, Pete Davidson. West has been suspended from Instagram for 24 hours, yet followers are still able to like and comment on his posts.

Race, Racism and Public School Education

Addressing race and racism after hate crime charges are filed against students in Frederick County, Maryland.

Last week… three eighth graders at Middletown Middle School in Frederick County were charged with hate crimes.  They posted video threats of deadly violence against black students on social media.  One of the three boys is also facing a gun charge.  This incident has frightened and galvanized students and parents.  But it raises a lot of questions about racism and how children view race in school.

NC School District Updating Policies After ‘Slave Auction’

Students said they witnessed a “slave auction” at a school.

PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina schools superintendent has apologized for a mock “slave auction” in which white middle-schoolers pretended to sell their Black classmates.

“Actions such as these, they just do not reflect who we are as a school system,” Chatham County Schools Superintendent Anthony Jackson said after parents raised an outcry. “And I say, unapologetically, will not be tolerated in the school system.”

The school board adopted some policy changes and will also review the student code of conduct and discipline policies involving acts of racism, Jackson said. Some parents complained that several students involved were given just a one-day suspension.

J.S. Waters School, Chatham, North Carolina

A coalition of local groups called on the board Monday to address the situation at the J.S. Waters School in Goldston and require the instigators to apologize, news outlets reported

The mock auction happened in the presence of staff and faculty and was recorded on video, according to a Chatham Organizing For Racial Equity press release. The K-8 school about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Raleigh has 195 students, and 68% are white.

Persons 65 and older may need to get a 2nd COVID booster shot

Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, March 15, 2022) – Millions of Americans may need to roll up their sleeves again to keep COVID at bay.  Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer reportedly plans to seek FDA approval for a second booster shot for persons 65 and older.

The move is designed to beef-up waning immunity against the coronavirus that apparently occurs several months after the first booster.

Meantime, reports indicate the Food and Drug Administration plans to convene outside advisors early next month to mull over whether or not there should be an October or November campaign to push for all adults to get additional boosters.

Gas Prices, Inflation and You

What can you do to blunt the impact of the economic crisis?

Have you checked out the price of gas lately?  I bet you have and nobody is happy about it.  The cost of a gallon of regular gas is creeping expensively and disrespectfully close to five dollars a gallon in the DMV. In other parts of the country prices are well over six dollars per gallon.  That’s not all.  Inflation is at a 40-year-high with no signs of slowing.  What’s going on and what can you do to blunt the sting of more money going out than you can afford?
