Grief During The Holidays

How do you manage the grief?

For so many people, the holiday season is filled with joy, cheer and high spirited celebration.  But it isn’t that way for everyone.  For some of us the season is filled with sorrow, mourning, even tears.  It is the time when we feel the absence of loved ones who are no longer with us.  Some of them are long passed, others passing this holiday season… making their absence particulary difficult to handle.  What about lost relationships, separations, divorce or heartbreak?  How do you manage the grief?

Death Toll Climbing from Weekend Twisters

President Biden set to tour tornado ravaged Kentucky Wednesday.

(Monday, December 13, 2021) – The devastation continues across parts of the Midwest and South as the full extent of the death and damage become more apparent.  In Kentucky alone, Governor Andy Beshear is confirming 64 deaths across his state.  The governor says that number is likely to go higher and adds it could be weeks before a total fatality count is clear.

As many as 105 people are unaccounted for as of Monday morning.  “We’re now on Day 3 of responding to the worst tornado event in the history of our commonwealth,” said Beshear as he briefed reporters Monday morning.  The victims range in age from 5 months to 86 years.

A majority of the deaths were reported in Graves County, which is where Mayfield is located and is the site of that candle factory where the roof was ripped off.

Meantime, more than 25k homes in Kentucky are without power and thousands more are without water or heat.  President Biden is promising immediate federal help and plans to tour impacted areas Wednesday.

DMV Shows Love for WHUR Toy Drive, Donating 2k Gifts

WHUR Toy Drive helps to keep the celebration going for 50th Anniversary of heritage radio station

Washington, D.C. – (Monday, December 13, 2021) – Nothing says the holidays like showing love and kindness for those in need.  The DMV did just that Saturday, December 11th for the 19th Annual WHUR Children’s Toy Drive at the Shops at Iverson.

The Toy Drive kicked off at 12 p,m. But even before the start of the event, a steady stream of people came in to share their good fortunes with others.  “I come every year because I remember as a little girl growing up in public housing and not really having a Christmas.  I don’t want any other children to experience that sadness,” said Denise Mitchell from SE.

The Toy Drive was broadcast live during the ever popular CokaLani Saturday show from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.  When the day was over, well over 2k toys and gifts were donated along with $2,000 in checks.  The day was made even more successful with the help of sponsors like FedEx and Giant Food.  Plus organizations like WOW, Corvette Clubs across the DMV, and members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

From bikes and scooters to dolls and trucks and lots of video games and board games too, it was truly a toy wonderland as WHUR listeners came by the dozens to drop off new unwrapped toys and gifts.  “It was truly overwhelming to see the level of non-stop generosity.  I know there will be lots of smiling faces this holiday season because of the giving spirit of WHUR listeners,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

All donations were turned over to the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, SE Tennis and Learning Center, Mission of Love Charities, Women’s Wings Organization, and United Communities Against Poverty.

Omicron Cases Reported In DC

DC is reporting its first cases of the newly omicron variant. Three women and one man. All are said to be fully vaccinated.

Washington, D. C. – (Monday, December 13, 2021) – New cases of the omicron variant are popping-up in the DMV.  The D.C. Health Department is reporting four cases.  Health officials say all of the adults were fully vaccinated.

  • The first case is in an adult female who traveled domestically to Florida and New York. She had been fully vaccinated and was eligible for the booster vaccine but had not received it yet. All close contacts have been contacted and have been provided guidance by the DC Health Contact Trace Force.

  • The second case is an adult female who traveled domestically during the Thanksgiving holiday to Maryland. She had been fully vaccinated and her booster vaccine status is unknown. All close contacts have been contacted.

  • The third case is an adult male with no known travel. He had been fully vaccinated and his booster vaccine status is unknown. There were no known exposures or close contacts.

  • The fourth case is an adult female who traveled domestically during the Thanksgiving holiday to Virginia. She had been fully vaccinated and her booster vaccine status is unknown. All close contacts have been contacted and have been provided guidance by the DC Health Contact Trace Force.

While Omicron is classified by the World Health Organization as a Variant of Concern, scientists are still working to determine how it compares with the predominant Delta variant in terms of transmissibility and disease severity.

The recent emergence of the Omicron variant further emphasizes the importance of vaccination, boosters, and prevention strategies (e.g. masking, washing your hands frequently, choosing activities wisely, and physically distancing from others) needed to protect against COVID-19.

DC Health wants to restate that everyone 5 and older should get vaccinated. Anyone 16 or older who has received their second dose of Pfizer or Moderna on or before June 12, 2021 or who has received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on or before October 12, 2021 is encouraged to get a booster dose as soon as possible. In addition, all District residents 6 months and older should get vaccinated with the flu vaccine to protect themselves and the health care system. Residents can get a COVID-19 vaccination in the District by doing the following:

  1. Go to a doctor
  2. Find a local pharmacy and schedule and an appointment (vaccines.gov)
  3. Visit a DC Government walk-up location listed on vaccinate.dc.gov
  4. Request a vaccination at-home by calling 1-855-363-0333

Getting Your Child to Talk to You

Bridging the communications gap between parent and child.

If you have children in the house, especially teenagers, you know they can be a little reserved when it comes to talking to you about what’s on their minds.  That’s not a new thing.  But how do you get them to talk to you when the silent treatment seems to be the order of the day, everyday?  Now, more than ever, bridging the communications gap between parent and child is critical.  So how do you do it?

Ari Lennox Says “I Am Not Okay” After Recent Arrest Due To Racial Injustice

Ari Lennox shares some messages on Twitter following her arrest in Amsterdam.

On November 29th, Ari Lennox was arrested by Amsterdam security for a “disturbance.” As previously reported by WHUR, Lennox accused the airline staff of racial discrimination and was then arrested.

Her manager, Justin LaMotte, released a statement on November 30th assuring that the singer was safe and appreciative of the support.

The singer opens up about her experience following the ordeal. On December 2nd she tweeted that she is safe and thankful for the prayers and love.

A couple of days later, she admits that her “only regret” would be her “reaction to the racism and discrimination,” that she experienced. She went on to express how KLM Royal Dutch Airlines “never cared to hear it from the jump” referring to her side of the story.

Lennox has not responded to the claims made by the police, being that she was held because she allegedly made threats before and during her arrest.

The R&B star appeared on Khalid’s latest mixtape on Dec. 3rd ‘Scenic Drive’.

Sandra Bullock Responds To Criticism Of Her Adopting Black Children

On a new episode of Red Table Talk, Sandra Bullock, opens up about adopting two black children.

Contributed by Lauren Taylor

The topic has always been controversial, white parents adopting Black children. Being in the eye of the public when notable white celebrities decide to adopt Black children, they immediately deal with backlash and questions from society.

It happens extremely often now as celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Madonna, and more have adopted Black children. Sandra Bullock adopted two Black kids, her son Louis in 2010 and her daughter Laila in 2015, and opens up about doing so.

Appearing as a guest on the new episode of Red Table Talk, Bullock discusses her experiences with Louis and Laila. Co-Host Jada Pinkett-Smith asked Bullock,  “Have people ever been like, well Sandy why would you adopt two black children?” In response, Bullock said, “No one would say that to my face.”

According to Essence, Bullock says “I love who they are,” when referring to her kids. “Every day I get to see who they are. I am one of the lucky individuals that gets to be around my children all the time and see who get to grow up to be.”

During the episode, she shared it would be easier for people when approaching her family if she and her children shared the same skin color, “To say that I wish our skins matched, sometimes I do. Because then it would be easier on how people approach us.”

In reference to racism, Bullock said, “Sure. Yeah. A lot of it. Guess what? Not my problem. Your sickness is not my problem.”

Howard Student Tamia Thompson Receives White House Presidential Service Award

Howard student, Tamia Thompson, receives award from The White House for her community service.

After contributing over 176 hours of community service, Tamia Thompson receives the 2021 White House Presidential Service Award.

She is a Howard University College of Arts and Sciences sophomore who puts in hours of work at several non-profit organizations like Whatsoever Is Good Inc., and the Zero Debt College Project. According to Howard Newsroom, Thompson also aides in one-on-one mentoring for 10-year-olds through college-aged students. This mentoring includes scholarship essay writing and scholarship strategy advice.

Monique Thompson, Ph.D., founder of Whatsoever is Good Inc., and the Zero Debt College Project says Tamia Thompson is their top leader and mentor.

“She helps others learn credible information about scholarships and dispel myths about needing to graduate top of their class or with perfect grades to avoid student loans.” The founder describes Tamia as a student who always does what is necessary.

Tamia Thompson is from Dallas, Texas and majors in political science, minors in philosophy. What’s after undergrad for Tamia? She plans on becoming a civil rights attorney after attending law school.

Thompson is also a published author. She released her book Thirteen in 2017 and is an executive director and co-founder of the Zero Debt College Project. She also managed two campaigns, one for the school board of trustees and the other being a mayoral campaign in Little Elm, Texas.

Former ‘Real’ Host Tamera Mowry Reveals How Talk Show “Wasn’t A Safe Place”

Tamera Mowry explains how being a talk show host wasn’t the best place for her.

Contributed by Lauren Taylor

Tamera Mowry has been in the entertainment industry for decades. She started off her career as a child gaining fame with her twin sister in the show, Sister Sister. She has learned a lot of lessons over the years and from her experiences as a co-host of The Real, she realized hosting a talk show is not for her.

In an interview with Lewis Howes, Mowry described her feelings on being a co-host of The Real. “They will take what you say, put it out of context of who they think you are and that is what happened for years on that show,” she told Howes. “I will tell you this, being on a talk show and you can take it or leave it, it’s not a safe space. It’s not. I wish someone would have told me that because then I would have been prepared. I was not. I learned. Think of going to battle but you don’t know you’re going to battle.”

The star felt her experiences, though tough, were good for her. They allowed her to become a stronger person who would not let negative comments feed into insecurities that she already had.

Rather than internalize comments she would remind herself that the people critiquing her did not know her personally and that she knows who she is. That it is ok not to be perfect, as reported by Essence.

“Don’t take anything personal if they don’t know me personally, that’s what I learned. And then, I had to do a lot of inner work,” she said. Although the talk show “wasn’t a safe space” for the actress, her time there made her who she is today.

The Writer of ‘Girls Trip’ Releases New Comedy Series ‘Harlem’ on Amazon

Tracy Oliver creates new hit series ‘Harlem’ and it’s out now on Amazon Prime.

Contributed by Lauren Taylor

Tracy Oliver, also known as the first Black woman to write a film that grossed over $100 million, is at it yet again. Written, directed, and produced by Oliver, the new Amazon series Harlem charms its audience.

The show follows four women in the big city balancing work, love, and life in their 30-something’s. Meagan Good stars as Camille, an adjunct anthropology professor, Jerrie Johnson, as Tye the tech-wiz who’s developing a queer dating app, Grace Byers playing Quinn a trust-fund fashion designer, and Shoniqua Shandai as Angie a sex-positive singer and actress.

Good, 40, praised the diversity and relatability of the characters, “They’re just not monolithic…you see yourself in every one of these characters,” as reported by Black Enterprise.

Ukonwa Ojo, the chief marketing officer at Prime Video and Amazon Studios, expresses her thoughts on the show. “In bringing this show to life through our marketing we thought, ‘What could be better than honoring many of the inspirational women entrepreneurs who built their businesses in Harlem, or are closely connected to the community?’ That’s how this exciting activation, featuring some amazing entrepreneurs and artists, as well as activities and conversations, came to be. And just like in the show, it’s not just all about business! We wanted to create a space that celebrates the heritage of the community and that lets residents, as well as those just a subway ride away, immerse themselves in a bit of culture and fun.”

The 10 episode season of Harlem now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Court documents show 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley’s parents are facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Crumbley’s father legally bought the weapon used in the shooting on Black Friday. The teen is facing charges as an adult for allegedly killing four students and injuring seven other individuals at Oxford High, north of Detroit.

Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald addresses the media in her office, Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, in Pontiac, Mich. McDonald filed involuntary manslaughter charges against Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, who is accused of killing four students at a Michigan high school. Hulu Releases New Documentary ‘Astroworld: Concert From Hell’

Hulu releases and quickly removes news special regarding Astroworld tragedy.

Contributed by Lauren Taylor

Hulu with a “post and delete.” On Wednesday, the streaming services released and subsequently removed a news special surrounding the tragic incidents that occurred only one month ago at the Astroworld Festival.

The series was titled Astroworld: Concert From Hell, it seemed to have only one episode and the description read, “Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival was supposed to be the concert of a lifetime. But it turned into a tragic nightmare. A minute-by-minute look at what happened in the crowd, the young victims who were killed, and what happens next.”

Many people believed that releasing this news special so soon, amidst people mourning and lawsuits are still in effect wasn’t the best idea. People reacted on social media voicing their opinions, one viral tweet from a user said, “Hulu making a documentary about Astroworld is in poor taste all around. People are still burying their loved ones. The legal cases haven’t even started. Great documentaries are done when all the facts are laid out. Not enough time has passed to fully discuss this.”

The Twitter user was under the impression the Hulu produced the special, which they in fact did not. According to Variety, a Hulu representative cleared the air on why the program was removed. “Astroworld: Concert From Hell” was removed from the service because it was not properly branded — the way it was presented and promoted made it look like the feature was a Hulu original, which it isn’t.” The representative did not mention the backlash from users as a reasoning for the removal.

Some people feel as though the program was necessary for some to gain closure over the incident.

The program was produced by KTRK, which is owned by ABC and operates locally in Houston. The original news special aired on November 20th and you can watch it here.

World’s First Living Robots Are Now Able to Reproduce

Xenobots are now able to reproduce, but not in the way that you think.

Contributed by Lauren Taylor

The robot life forms known as xenobots are now able to reproduce, but not in the way you think. These are not your typical ‘Wal E’ type of robots. They aren’t made out of metal but rather from the scraped living cells of frog embryos that were left to incubate.

Josh Bongard, robotics expert and computer science professor at the University of Vermont is the lead author of the study, says “Most people think of robots as made of metals and ceramics but it’s not so much what a robot is made from but what it does, which is act on its own on behalf of people,” CNN reported. The xenobots do just that.

How do these robots reproduce? The robots do not have sex in the way that animals do, nor do they reproduce in the way plants do. The parent xenobots are c-shaped robots that push loose stem cells together into piles which can mature into offspring resembling the parent. This is a new way to reproduce that scientist haven’t seen before, and is referred to as the kinetic reproduction process.

“Frogs have a way of reproducing that they normally use but when you … liberate (the cells) from the rest of the embryo and you give them a chance to figure out how to be in a new environment, not only do they figure out a new way to move, but they also figure out apparently a new way to reproduce,” says Michael Levin, a professor of biology and director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University who was co-lead author of the new research.

The xenobots were first shown off in 2020. They are only 0.04 inches wide but experiments show that these robots can work together in groups, self-heal and move around on their own.

As of right now these robots can really do much for people, but with the ever so advancing technology I’m sure they’ll be able to soon.

Atlanta Mayoral Candidate Calls Out TI For Spreading Misinformation

Felicia Moore is calling out T.I. saying he spread misinformation that she said caused her to lose a run-off election to City Councilmember Andre Dickens on November 30th.

T.I. had shared a news article that said Moore wanted to tighten restrictions on recording studios. “Excuse me Mrs @feliciamooreatl but… Our Culture Runs This Town Ma’am!!” wrote T.I. on IG. “These studios (and the creatives that work in em) have laid [the] foundation and paved ways to create opportunities for this city like nothing else could.”

“They lied then, saying I wanted to close all recording studios,” Felicia Moore told TMZ about T.I. and Issac Hayes III, who she also blamed for her defeat. “The legislation would have never closed anything. It would only be for new ones.”

Moore told TMZ that T.I. also put out information saying she wanted to close strip clubs and says she hadn’t discussed stripclubs since the general election. Prior to the election T.I. posted a news headline which read: “Woman Running For Atlanta Mayor Promises To CLOSE ALL STRIP CLUBS!!!” His caption for the Instagram post read, “Respectfully of course. Raekwon Reveals RZA Rejected A Leonardo DiCaprio Wu-Tang Biopic

In an excerpt from his memoir, “From Staircase To Stage: The Story Of Raekwon And Wu-Tang Clan,” Reakwon discussed a Wu-Tang biopic he wanted to make with Leonardo DiCaprio, who is a big Wu-Tang fan.

RZA had other plans for a scripted TV bio-series but Raekwon wasn’t feeling it, “I was against the deal because I didn’t like the terms, the money, any of it,” Raekwon said of RZA’s idea.

Inspired by the success of NWA’s Straight Outta Compton Raekwon said, “It made no sense to me to sell our story for a TV series where nobody would walk away with real money, everybody except RZA, that is, because he was getting more on the deal — as an executive producer, writer, creator, composer, and I’m sure a few other ways we’ll never know about.”

Raekwon and RZA took three meetings with Leo about the movie, however Raekwon says RZA had no intention of working with DiCaprio, leading them to argue. Raekwon says that he “didn’t spazz” to hard on RZA but knew his Hollywood relationships were more important than his relationships with Wu-Tang.

Do you think the Wu-Tang story would’ve been better as a movie?
