There’s a National Egg Shortage—Here’s What You Need to Know

It’s clear that the high price of eggs is no secret. Now there is a looming shortage which may make it hard to get eggs at all.

The high price of eggs and the looming shortage is because an unprecedented epidemic of highly virulent avian influenza has killed millions of egg-laying chickens nationwide.

The biggest bird flu pandemic in US history killed approximately 60 million chickens by 2022. This extremely contagious avian flu virus kills 90 to 100 percent of hens within 48 hours. Health officials have preemptively killed millions of birds due to its ferocity.

Some states have taken a bigger hit than others, like California and Colorado have been hit due to production and California’s reliance on cage-free chickens to adhere to Prop. 12. Some people are paying up to $7.37 per dozen.

Although no word on how long this egg spike will continue, but according to Readers Digest, these things won’t be pricy in 2023:

  • New cars
  • Used cars
  • Medicare
  • Income Taxes
  • Bicycles
  • Convenience services
  • Nonessential Items
  • Televisions
  • Appliances
  • Apparel

This comes as Republicans are trying to nix the funding approved for the IRS in the law, which allocates about 80-billion for the agency over the next decade.

This comes after the 2021 data breach, that caused the company to pay $350 million to customers that filed a class action suit for the theft of their social security and driver’s license numbers. Almost 80 million customers were affected.

Wes Moore Sworn in as Maryland’s First Black Governor

Moore’s running mate, Aruna Miller, also made history as the first immigrant and first Asian American elected statewide in Maryland.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore was sworn in as the state’s first Black governor on Wednesday, pledging to work for greater inclusion and economic equity while also focusing on improving education, fighting crime and climate change.

Moore, after being introduced by Oprah Winfrey in front of the Maryland State House, noted that the state is one of the wealthiest in the nation, but he also described it as “asset-rich and strategy poor.”

“It is time for our policies to be as bold as our aspirations — and to confront the fact that we have been offered false choices,” Moore said. “We do not have to choose between a competitive economy and an equitable one.”

The 44-year-old Democrat, who won in a landslide in November, also committed to fighting violent crime. Many Maryland residents have grown weary in their faith in government’s ability to keep them safe, he said.

In Baltimore, Maryland’s largest city, homicides surpassed 300 for the eighth year running last year. Gun violence remains high, despite repeated promises from elected officials and new anti-violence initiatives.

Moore said the state can build a police force “that moves with appropriate intensity and absolute integrity and full accountability, and embrace the fact that we cannot and will not militarize ourselves to safety.”

“We do not have to choose between being a safe state and a just one,” Moore said. “Maryland can, and we will, be both.”

Moore, who has not held public office before now, won a crowded Democratic primary in July before going on to win the general election by more than 30 percentage points against Republican Dan Cox, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

Moore is a best-selling author and former CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, an anti-poverty nonprofit. He also is a Rhodes scholar and a combat veteran who served in Afghanistan.

“This might be his first day as an elected official, but Wes Moore has been a public servant his entire adult life,” Winfrey said. “And there’s so much more to come. He’s just getting started.”

Moore pledged to make the state a leader in addressing the “existential threat” of climate change, which said “is happening now in our communities.”

“Confronting climate change represents another chance for Maryland to lead,” Moore said. “We can and we will be a leader in wind technology, in grid electrification, and clean transit.”

Speaking not far from the nation’s largest estuary, Moore said the state will protect “our jewel,” the Chesapeake Bay, and put Maryland on track to generate “100% clean energy by 2035 and create thousands of jobs in the process.”

The new governor also emphasized his commitment to education, including a state initiative through which high school graduates can volunteer for a year of service.

Moore punctuated his inauguration with references to Black history, beginning with the enslaved people who once arrived by ship at the Annapolis City Dock, which was once a regional slave port and the site of a memorial to enslaved African Kunta Kinte, who arrived there in 1767 and was written about in Alex Haley’s book “Roots.”

Moore was joined by other Black leaders at the wreath-laying ceremony on a bright sunny morning, including Maryland Rep. Kweisi Mfume, Attorney General Anthony Brown, former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, and former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who was the nation’s second elected Black governor, in 2006. Virginia’s Douglas Wilder was the first, in 1989, and Moore is the third.

Moore’s running mate, Aruna Miller, also made history as the first immigrant and first Asian American elected statewide in Maryland.

The unveiling of the sculpture, named ‘The Embrace’ resembling the hug shared between Rev. Dr.Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King, what most would assume an unexpected response from Black Twitter. The opinions came in heavy and hot.

The tribute displayed in Boston sparked less of an embrace and more of an outrage at the display. Some subtle, saying,” MLK, looking down at this: “This is not the dream I had.”

One person said, “Given that I am not White, I am safe from ANY charges of racism for saying the MLK embrace statue is aesthetically unpleasant. The famous photo should have been a FULL statue of the couple and their embrace. What a huge swing and miss in honoring the Dr & Mrs King. SAD!

National Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

We’re examining this difficult but important topic.

A Montgomery County man is facing sex trafficking charges in Florida.  Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Rundle says rapper, 31-year-old Monriko Clements, also known as “King Swuice”, met a 23-year-old woman on the dating site Tinder last fall.  After dating for several weeks… he’s accused of taking her to south Florida and selling her sexual services for cash… which he kept.  He was arrested in Maryland and faced a Florida judge last month. As incredible as this story may seem, it’s just one of many being played out across the country and in your community.  January is National Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.  We’re examining this difficult but important topic.

First-grader’s Backpack Searched Before Teacher Shot

At least one school administrator was notified the boy may have a weapon before the 6-year-old shot the teacher.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Administrators at the Virginia school where a first-grader shot his teacher last week learned the child may have had a weapon in his possession before the shooting but did not find the 9mm handgun he brought despite searching his bag, the school system’s superintendent said.

Police said Friday they were not told about the tip before the shooting occurred. Kelly King, a spokesperson for the Newport News Police Department, told The Associated Press that some time after the shooting, police learned through their investigation that a school employee was notified of a possible gun at Richneck Elementary School before the Jan. 6 shooting.

“The Newport News Police Department was not notified of this information prior to the incident,” King wrote in an email.

Michelle Price, a spokesperson for the Newport News school district, declined to comment on the police statement. She said that typically, when school officials receive a tip about a potential weapon or other contraband in the schools, if the tip includes specific information about a particular student or a particular classroom, “that’s where the search starts.”

According to reports, On January 3, 2023, at around 3:38 p.m., a West Traffic Division motor officer was flagged for a traffic collision in the area of Venice Boulevard and Lincoln Boulevard in the Pacific Area.

At first, Anderson does not appear to comply, and two other officers arrive and move him to lie prone on his stomach on the street, telling Anderson to “relax” as officers struggle on top of him.

Anderson can be heard screaming, “Help, they’re trying to kill me” and “Please, don’t do this.”

“They’re trying to George Floyd me,” says Anderson, as officers attempt to roll him onto his stomach.

Then, an officer repeatedly deploys a taser on Anderson, who says, “I’m not resisting.”

The release states, “While at the hospital, Anderson went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced deceased.”

Los Angeles police Captain Kelly Muñiz says that Anderson died four-and-a-half hours after the use of force.

Dahmer’s Victim’s Mom Slams Evan Peters

The mother of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims is angry over Evan Peters’ Golden Globe win.

The mother of one of Jeffrey Dahmer‘s victims is angry over Evan PetersGolden Globe win.

According to TMZ, Shirley, the mother of Dahmer victim Tony Hughes, says “Evan should have used his acceptance speech to mention the families who are still suffering from Dahmer’s crimes or to say Hollywood should put an end to telling stories about killers and glorifying them.”

Peters won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his work playing Jeffrey Dahmer in the Netflix miniseries Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

In his acceptance speech, he told the audience he hoped something good would come from his win and the series.

Shirley says “nothing good will come from Evan’s award for the Netflix series.” She continues,” it just adds to the grief for the families of the people Dahmer killed, replaying the tragedy over and over.”

When disgusted that Peters took on the role, she explains, “There’s a lot of sick people around the world, and people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame.”
