(New York, NY) — The Powerball jackpot for tonight’s drawing is at a level never seen before, one-point-nine billion dollars. This is after no one won the top prize in Saturday’s drawing. There were numerous smaller prize winning tickets sold in multiple states. The odds of winning the big jackpot are one in 292 million.
(Alexandria, VA) — The work week is starting off with six Metro stations reopen along Blue and Yellow lines. Service resumed yesterday after being closed for eight weeks. Crews are building tracks for the new Potomac Yard Station, and repairing the Yellow Line tunnel and bridge. The transit agency also plans to have more trains running before Thanksgiving and improve frequency for Red, Blue, Orange and Silver lines next month.
We are taking you to the theatre this morning on Taking It to the Streets. I have the details about a powerful performance underway at the Mosiac Theatre. It’s call the Till Trilogy and it details the tragic events surrounding the killing of Emmett Till and the ongoing fight for racial justice. As a fan of the movie Black Panther, it’s safe to say it hit us all hard when August 28, 2020 the news of Chadwick Boseman passing struck. When Boseman played the iconic character T’Challa in Black Panther, we immediately anticipated that Director Ryan Coogler would deliver us a sequel but unfortunately not the untimely death of the main character.
Coogler shared the importance of this screening and what it means to be in DC in regards to Boseman, “Chad identified with this place. His time here had a profound impact on him.” He continues, “I know what bookstore he worked at while he was here and the protest that he led and participated in while he was here. The stories about him here at Howard are legend.”
Sunday, Candice Adkins -Wilson was able to speak to Angela Bassett, Ryan Coogler, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’O , Tenoch Huerta, and Winston Duke as they attended the special screening of Black Panther: Wakanada Forever at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American and Culture.

Born Kirshnik Khari Ball in Lawrenceville, GA. , professionally known Takeoff as a member of the popular group Migos was shot during a party in Houston. According to CNN, two others victims were taken to the hospital, their status is currently unknown.

One in three women will become victims of some form of domestic violence in their lifetimes. One in four men will have a similar experience. Those statistics are sobering.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and with in mind, we hope to bring awareness to why some are abuses, how to recognize an abuser, and ways to move forward if you have been a victim of abuse. That and more is part of our conversation.

It’s the viral video that’s making headlines across the country. Kyla Thurston, attacked by at least three teenagers on a Metrobus in southeast DC after she asked them to stop using foul language. Metro’s general manager has personally apologized to her for the incident and metro is looking into the alleged actions or inaction by the bus driver. We’re looking into something else. How could, what appears to be a simple act of correction, escalate into this kind of violence?

(Washington, DC) — A warning for parents in the nation’s capital. More kids are getting sick from RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and the flu. In fact it’s so bad, Children’s National Hospital is nearly full. Officials say they’re dealing with a surge of patients and expect that to continue for a while. This means families wanting to be seen for non-emergencies will have to wait even longer. The hospital suggests in these cases, it might be easier to see a primary care doctor or visit an urgent care.
A powerful conference is underway in Prince George’s County this week for Black Men bringing together some of the best and brightest minds in the country. It’s called Prince George’s Goes Pink and highlights the county’s efforts to provide services and resources to those impacted by breast cancer. Can Roe v. Wade drive Black voters to the polls? The opening of the student loan forgiveness portal is now open. Hearing aides, marijuana, Georgia elections and yes, Kanye West. We’re at the political roundtable.
U.S. consular officers are speaking with Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan on the phone today. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the U.S. Embassy hadn’t had access to Griner, who is detained in Russia, since early August. On her 32nd birthday, she said she was grateful for support she had received and for those trying to bring her home. That’s according to a statement from a Russian law firm.
There’s an effort underway to increase the number of Black professionals in media and advertising. A conference is underway this week here in the DMV designed to make that effort a reality. My guest is Jack Myers – Advancing Diversity

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz has been sidelined by an injury to his throwing hand. (Washington, DC) — DC police have found the car used in the in the killing of a 15-year-old in Northeast D.C. Police believe the boy was targeted while sitting on the porch of a home yesterday near Aiton Elementary School. They are still looking for three people who got out of a car, opened fire on the teen and took off. Anyone who sees it or has information about the case is urged to call police.
(Washington, DC) — Students in the nation’s capital may have more time to get a COVID vaccine. The D.C. Council is expected to vote November 1st on temporary and emergency legislation. If approved, it would push back the deadline almost another year. As it stands now, kids must have their shots by January 3rd but at least 45-percent over the age of 12 still don’t. School leaders fear the mandate could lead to a high number of students missing class.
You see the messages, the commercials and the advertisements, targeting African-American consumers. Sometimes they miss the mark with messages that aren’t relatable to the consumer or they’re just down right offensive. Next week a virtual summit will be held to examine diversity in the media and advertising industry. This year the focus will be hiring HBCU graduates.
(Washington, DC) — The committee investigating last year’s Capitol attack is voting to issue a subpoena to former President Trump. During today’s hearing, the Democrat-controlled panel concluded Trump was the driving force behind the Capitol riot. Trump can refuse to comply with a subpoena or invoke his Fifth Amendment right to refuse to answer questions by committee members if he chooses. Congress can hold Trump in contempt if he refuses to comply.
Is this the year for Charles County, Maryland? Just today… the new Nice-Middleton bridge opened, connecting Maryland to Virginia. This summer Charles County surpassed Prince George’s as the wealthiest majority black county in the U.S.
The county is experiencing growth and growing pains. How is it all being managed? We’ll talk about the past, present and the future of the Charles County.

Christopher Geldart, DC’s Deputy Mayor for Public Safety is out of a job. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that she accepted the resignation of one of her top aides. Geldart was accused of assault after an incident in the parking lot of Gold’s Gym in Alexandria on October 1st. That incident also raised questions about his residency as a top DC official. Geldart rents an apartment in the District, but his family lives in Alexandria. The mayor said this incident has distracted from the business of the District.
